Virgil R. Baumfalk Jr.

screen-shot-2017-03-20-at-8-30-28-amVirgil Ray Baumfalk Jr. was born April 7, 1961 at the Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood, Kansas, the sixth child of Virgil and Nanette Baumfalk.

He graduated from Atwood High School in 1979 after attending public schools in Herndon, KS, College Station, TX and Cumberland, IA. He was a BIG fun-loving Teddy Bear.

He lived with long time friend Tina Tesmer, who had a son Justin, and they had one son together Christopher Ray Baumfalk.

He married Jackie Notz who had three children of her own, Clifford (Butch), Joey and Katie, from a previous marriage.

Virgil passed away at his home in Colby, KS on March 13, 2017 at the age of 55 years old. He lived in Goodland, KS most of his life and was the owner of McB’s Motor for many years. After the sale of McB Motors he held various different positions in several different states operating many different kinds of heavy equipment.

Virgil was preceded in death by stillborn brother James Thomas, Father Virgil Ray Baumfalk Sr., Grandparents Clarence and Selma Baumfalk, Robert and Mabelle French and niece Dusty Dawn McKenzie. He is survived by his son Christopher and wife Tarra, Grandson Benson, Mother Nanette Baumfalk, Brother Gary(Yvonne) Baumfalk Colby, KS, Sisters Nancy (Jack) McKenzie, McCook, NE, Sherry McDonald, Colby, KS, Terrea(Andrew) Wakefield, Las Vegas, NV. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday March 21, 2017 ,11:00 am at Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel Colby, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting Memorials to his Grandson Benson Baumfalk’s Medical Expenses.

Eric Joseph Schroeder

screen-shot-2017-03-20-at-8-28-49-amEric Joseph Schroeder passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Logan County Manor in Logan, Kansas at the age of 43. He was born on September 2, 1973 in Plainville, Kansas to Gary Joseph and Judy (McLaughlin) Schroeder. He attended school in Stockton graduating with the class of 1992. He attended Butler County Community College in El Dorado, studying Fire Science.

Eric loved his home and family. He enjoyed watching basketball and never missed March Madness. He also enjoyed football and always a good western. He looked forward to fishing and hunting, especially the time spent fishing with his friends and the last year with his mom. Animals were always a part of his life as he could often be found playing with his dog and riding his horse. Eric was a past member of the Plainville Saddle Club.

Eric is survived by his mother Judy Schroeder and friend Ray of Stockton; god-mother Linda McLaughlin and husband Don of Stockton; and many other friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his father Gary J. Schroeder and grandparents Cleo and Vernon McLaughlin.

Although Eric was taken far too soon, his loving smile and gentle face will never be forgotten. The loss is hard to bear but we can smile because he gave us many cherished memories which will forever remain in the hearts of family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday March 22, 2017 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton with burial following in Bow Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Kenneth Eugene Breitkreutz

He was born February 28, 1949, in Garden City, KS, to Walter and Winona Breitkreutz.

He grew up on a farm south of Leoti, and attended a small rural school in the community of Lydia. He graduated from Wichita County High School and then went on to Emporia University, graduating with a degree in Speech and Theater. It was there he met Betsy Ann Janke and later married her on November 9, 1974 in Stafford, KS. Ken and Betsy then moved back to Leoti where Ken joined his father, Walter, in a construction business.

Ken was an avid volunteer in the Leoti community. He coached minor league baseball, was a

4-H project leader, and was president of the Wichita County Amusement Association.

Ken was a life long learner, and was alway experimenting with a range of hobbies, from constructing a home made catapult, building water bottle rockets with his kids, to identifying all the native grasses, weeds, birds and animals in this diverse landscape.

Ken was preceded in death by is father and mother, of Leoti.

Survivors include his wife Betsy, of Leoti; four children, Will of Kansas City, MO, Judi of Junction City, KS, Jon of Leoti, and Michael of Colorado Springs, CO; a brother David, of Leoti; and five grand children.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 21, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Rev. Doug Olson presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Wichita County Amusement Association or Leoti’s EMT’s in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.

Harry E. Dechant

Harry E. Dechant, 89, Hays, died Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

Darrel Dean Lamb

screen-shot-2017-03-19-at-3-38-49-pmDarrel Dean Lamb, 86, of Colby, died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Prairie Senior Living Complex, in Colby. He was born July 9, 1930, in Downs, KS, to C.O. and Ethel (Nauman) Lamb.

Darrell grew up near Beaver City, NE, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He went on to attend McCook Community College, were he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Arts and Sciences. Darrel and his parents moved to Atwood in 1951 and built the Snack Shack on Highway 36.

Darrel enlisted in the marines and served in the Korean War, in Japan, from January 1952 – December 1953. He was a Sergeant in the U.S.M.C. Marine Air Group 16 and was honorably discharged in 1960. Darrel was a patriot who was very proud of his service and his country.

Darrel married Sylvia J. Urban in July 1958, in Loveland, CO. To this union five children were born; Charles Craig, in 1959, Ethel Margaret, in 1960, Kimberly Jean, in 1961, Jennifer Ann, in 1963 and Darrel Dean II, in 1968.

Darrel had many careers in his lifetime. He was everything from a barber in his own shop, in Beaver City, NE, to a bus driver for the local school in Atwood. Darrel also worked as manager of the Atwood Grain Company for several years. He spent most of his adult life working for the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 2004.

Darrel was an avid reader of the news. He loved to talk politics and visit with anyone who would lend an ear. Darrel enjoyed spending time with his family and following his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. He loved family gatherings and anytime he could share a meal with friends. Darrel always enjoyed the companionship of his dogs and you would often see him running them in the country or around the lake.

Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, C.O. and Ethel Lamb; brother, Bill Lamb; daughters, Ethel and Jennifer Lamb and grandson Gabriel Franklin.

He is survived by his son Craig (Robbyn) Lamb, of Atwood; daughter Kim (Dennis) Franklin, of Atwood; son Darrel Lamb, of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Visitation is 4-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017 also at the Mortuary, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery. Ivan LaVoral Henman

screen-shot-2017-03-18-at-11-36-44-amIvan LaVoral Henman’s family mourns his passing on Monday evening, March 13, 2017, at the Hays Medical Center. His family is grateful for his long and full life, and he will be missed by many for his love and thoughtfulness.

Ivan was born at home in Augusta, Kansas on December 15, 1933. He grew up in Augusta and graduated from the Augusta High School in 1951. During his middle and high school years, Ivan delivered newspapers and was active in school sports. He also worked as a mechanic and parts man for the Allis Chalmers farm implement dealer in El Dorado, Kansas. Ivan was selected as an Augusta representative at the Kansas Boys State during his high school junior year. He attended the El Dorado Junior College for one year before earning an academic scholarship to the University of Kansas. In 1956, Ivan graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Tau Honorary Engineering Associations and active in the Theta Tau Engineering Fraternity. He was also President of the Student Chapter of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

Ivan enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1951. He was subsequently chosen to participate in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp at the University of Kansas. He received a commission in the Navy and served two years as a Petroleum Inspector in South America determining quantity and quality of petroleum products at various refineries before purchase by the United States Government. He was honorably discharged as a Lt. J.G. in 1958.

Ivan began his career in the Petroleum Industry in earnest with the Atlantic Refining Company in 1958, as a roustabout and roughneck in the oil fields of southeast Texas. Numerous assignments took Ivan and his family from Silsbee to Houston, Longview, and Dallas, Texas. In 1965, Ivan accepted a job with the Standard Oil Company of Ohio in Russell, Kansas. This assignment led to moves to Oklahoma City; Troy, Ohio; Ephrata, Pennsylvania; Longview, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; and ultimately to Alaska in 1979, to work with the Trans Alaska Pipeline. He served in various capacities with the Pipeline from Superintendent of the Valdez Marine Terminal to Vice President of Engineering and Projects. He and his wife, Marva, retired in 1991, and moved to Plainwell, Michigan to live close to their daughter, Cheryl Craven.

During his life, Ivan actively supported a number of civic organizations including Junior Achievement, YMCA, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served as the President and on the Board of Directors of the Anchorage Community YMCA for several years. He was a member of the School of Engineering Advisory Council for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Ivan was a faithful Kansas Jayhawk fan. During his retirement years, Ivan enjoyed Kansas football and basketball games, gardening, golfing, swimming, and spending time with his family and friends. He organized a traveling golf group to play different courses on Thursdays during golfing season in Michigan. They called themselves the “Lake Doster Doddering Doits.”

Preceding him in death were his parents, Perry Wyning and Dorothy Rosalee (McBee) Henman; first wife Janet Sue (Nicholson) Henman, formerly of Ellis; and second wife Marva Beth (Berry) Henman, formerly of Russell; brother Perry A. (Pert) Henman of Wichita; and step-son Monte Woelk. Surviving are his two children, Perry Steven (spouse Robin) and Jacqueline Marie of Ellis, Kansas; two step-children, Cheryl (Woelk) Craven (spouse Richard) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Rocke D. Woelk (spouse Lesley) of Greenwood, Indiana. Ivan has six grand-children, Isaac Pert and Sarah Rosalee of Ellis, Kansas; Romy (Craven) Patterson of Macomb, Michigan; Morgan Craven of Ponder, Texas; Dari (Craven) Bargy of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Tiffany Saxon of Fallbrook, California. Ivan also has nine great grand-children, and a surviving sister, Iris (Henman) Lawrence of El Dorado, Kansas; and a brother Irvin Henman of Towanda, Kansas; and a dear friend and companion, Donna Groninger of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

A memorial service will be held at the Ellis United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., and a Celebration of Life service will be held this summer in Plainwell, Michigan.

William D. ‘Bill’ Farthing

William D. “Bill” Farthing, 66, Hays, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born August 5, 1950 in Carmi, Illinois the son of Dale Monroe and Rita (Spencer) Farthing. For 20 plus years he ran the printing press at the Great Bend Tribune and later he was an inspector for the Department of Weights and Measures. On June 16, 2000 he was united in marriage to Deloris I. Evans in Canton, Kansas. Bill enjoyed motorcycles, four wheeling, camping, nature, outdoor sports, and working in his garage.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, three sons; Chris Farthing and wife Shamarie of Ellsworth, Dustin Farthing and wife Leann of Savannah, Georgia, and Bret Farthing of Hays, two daughters; Sherry Langrehr and husband Jeff of Gardner, and Jennifer Brinck and husband Mark of McPherson, two brothers; Gary Farthing and wife Fe of San Leandro, CA, and James Farthing and wife Linda of Goddard, KS, a sister; Susan Brown and husband John of Woodward, OK, a brother-in-law; Joe Saenz of Great Bend, nineteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren plus one on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother; David Farthing, and a sister; Linda Saenz.

Lula Rebecca ‘Becky’ (Ainsworth) Stukesbary

Lula Rebecca “Becky” (Ainsworth) Stukesbary passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the Ness County Hospital, at the age of 92. Born in Nevada Missouri, January 1, 1925 to Joel and Lula (Hartman) Ainsworth, the second of two girls.

Becky attended Nevada High School, Nevada Missouri, graduating with the class of 1942. She worked for S. S. Kresge Drug Store in Nevada while in High School. She married Gomer Q. Stukesbary November 27, 1947 at the home of Dewey and Hazel Stukesbary, by the Rev. John Noyes, Gomer’s grandfather.

Living in Lawrence, Kansas, Becky worked for J.C. Penney in retail while Gomer “Stukes” attended pharmacy school at KU.

Before moving to Ness City, Becky & Gomer lived in Ft. Scott Kansas, where Robert Duane was born; and then on to Hutchinson. In 1952 Becky and Gomer moved to Ness City to purchase the Raker-Hammond Rexall Drug Store.

Leta Jo was born in Ness City in 1954 and Debra Kay was born in Ness City in 1956.

In 1967 Gomer and Becky rented the Beardsley building, formerly Ben Franklin, where Becky opened the B & G Variety Store.

Becky managed the variety store until combining B & G Varity and Hammond Rexall Drug Store into B & G HealthMart Pharmacy in 1985.

In her spare time Becky enjoyed spending time at Cedar Bluff, Den Mother for Cub Scouts; league bowling; golf; PTA; Church; UMW or WSCS Vashti Circle; BPW; Am Red Cross Blood Drive Chairperson; sacking candy for Santa; community arts program; and was an avid KU fan.

Becky & Gomer enjoyed travelling and after retirement spending as much time as possible with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death, Husband, Gomer died May 21, 2014; Sister Luella Rutledge died December 27, 2012,

Surviving Becky include son, Duane and wife Jana Stukesbary of Topeka; grandson Mark and wife Julie; great-grandsons Drew and Sam Stukesbary of Coffeville, KS. Daughter Leta Stukesbary of Hays; Daughter Deb Harvey and husband Steve of WaKeeney/Smith Center; granddaughter Becky and husband Jeremy Capps and great-granddaughter Kaytlin Capps of Kirwin KS; granddaughter Dona Lowry and husband Cody, and great-grandson Westyn, Kayden and Dawson Lowry of Almena KS. Special friend Wanda Gabel and family of Ness City. Extended surviving family includes one brother-in-law and family of Nevada Mo and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral service will be on Saturday, March 18, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Ness City with burial in the Ness City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Memorial contributions may be given to Ness City Boy Scout Troop 131 and the Ness County Hospital Foundation.

Arrell Dean Martindale

screen-shot-2017-03-15-at-12-29-08-pmArrell Dean Martindale, son of Alonzo Purl & Inez (Simon) Martindale, was born August 15, 1924 in Phillipsburg, Kansas and passed away March 9, 2017 at Logan Manor in Logan, Kansas at the age of 92.

He attended schools in Phillipsburg, graduating with the class of 1942. He was inducted into the United States Navy in 1943 and served until 1946.

On his 21st birthday, August 15, 1945, Dean was united in marriage to Betty Fern Wilkerson in Martinez, California. This union was blessed with six children: Denzel Joseph, Arrell Dean, Jr., Warren Patrick, Roy, Angela Christine and Nicki Lynne.

Dean worked in the shipyards in Richmond, California until February, 1948, when he enlisted in the United States Army. He served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War before his honorable discharge and retirement from military service on October 31, 1967.

The couple decided to move back to Kansas, to the family farm south of Speed, and Dean went to work for the Kansas State Highway Department, working his way up to Driver’s License Examiner and serving in that capacity until his retirement in November, 1993.

Some of Dean’s favorite pastimes were pheasant hunting, fishing and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Angela Christine; four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Logan, KS; four sons: Joe Martindale of Salina, KS; Dean Martindale, Jr. & wife, Pam, and Patrick Martindale & wife, Jean, all of Oklahoma City, OK; and Roy Martindale & wife, Sandra, of Fort Worth, TX; his daughter, Nicki Price of Glade, KS; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Tony Keesee officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church Of Christ or Phillips County Youth Hunter’s Safety.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday & Friday at the funeral home.

Arleta J. Power

screen-shot-2017-03-15-at-12-27-59-pmPhillipsburg resident Arleta J. Power died Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Morristown Hamblen Hospital in Morristown, TN at the age of 87.

She was born March 20, 1929 in Glade, KS the daughter of Milton & Mary E. (Taylor) Keeten.

Arleta was united in marriage to William D. Power on Sept. 24, 1950 in Phillipsburg, KS. He preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kirk.

Survivors include her son Mark W. Power of New Port, TN; daughter, BuJean Jenkins of Dandridge, TN; sister, Bettie Bach of Hugoton, KS; 2 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; & 3 step great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017 in the United Methodist Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Power will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends Thursday evening for visitation from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Women’s Society or Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
