Clara Louise Dubbs, age 92, passed away on January 14, 2017 at the Rhode Island Suites, Ransom, Kansas.

Carroll Cheney

screen-shot-2017-01-18-at-10-10-22-amCarroll Cheney, age 91, of Utica KS, youngest son of Joe and Vera (Johnson) Cheney, born September 11th, 1925 on the Cheney Homestead in Gove County KS departed his life in the early morning hours of Sunday January 15th 2017 at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter KS.

Raised on the farm, Carroll attended Alanthus Elementary School which was located east of the farmstead. He rode a horse to school recalling how he would often stop along the way at Grandma Johnson’s house for cookies and sweets. After grade school he attended and later graduated from Utica High School in 1943. In the fall of 1944 Carroll enlisted in the United States Air Force and served 4 years before being discharged and then was recalled and served another year. In 1954 he was united in marriage to Rosalie Luther. They moved to the homestead with two small sons Bill and Bob. Several years later Carroll was blessed with a daughter Carrie.

Carroll was a member of the United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Utica. He was a farmer and stockman until his eldest son Bill took over the family farm upon his retirement. Upon retirement Carroll looked for any opportunity to help others, spend time with his family, and stay busy. One of his fondest memories was sitting on the Larabee township election board in which he did until his health no longer allowed him to do so. Carroll enjoyed reading and watching western movies. He enjoyed time with friends, playing cards, and was always quick with a joke or a smile.

Carroll is preceded in death by both parents Joe and Vera, his sister Opal, his brother Darrell, and his son Bill. He is survived by soulmate and wife of 62 years Rosalie, son Bob (Paula) Cheney of Newton KS, daughter Carrie (Darien) Fritts of WaKeeney KS, and daughter-in-law Sherry of Colby KS. Carroll was blessed with eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Carroll will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

Grave Side Services will be held at the Utica Cemetery January 20th 2017 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that all Memorials be made to Gove County Medical Center or Trego County Lempke Memorial Hospital in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, KS.

Viewing will be Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.

David W. ‘Gus’ Sheley

He was born on January 11, 1959 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Blaine & Nancy Edmundson Sheley. A resident of Scott City, Kansas until 2011 when he moved to Buhler, Kansas, he worked for Moridge Manufacturing in Moundridge, Kansas.

On September 24, 2010 he married Patricia Elliott in Georgetown, Colorado. She survives.

Survivors Include his Wife – Patricia Sheley of Buhler, Kansas, Five Daughters – Stephanie Stewart of Dodge City, Kansas, Wendy & John Neill of Buhler, Kansas, Carrie & Angelo Head of Lakewood, Colorado, Amanda & Elijah Hansen of Killeen, Texas, Amber Martin of Wichita, Kansas, Two Brothers – Howard Sheley of Hastings, Nebraska, Dan Sheley of Dighton, Kansas, Two Sisters – Debby Flory of Russellville, Arkansas, Delaine Barnett of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Grandchildren – Bradley Neill, Jeffrey Neill, Chaya Head and Emma Hansen and Numerous Nieces & Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Brother In Law and One Grandson.

Funeral Services will be held at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 with Rev. Robert Nuckolls presiding.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Memorials In Lieu Of Flower may be given to the David Sheley Memorial Fund in car of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday.

Daniel Ray Pakkebier

Lenora resident Daniel Ray Pakkebier passed away Jan. 15, 2017 at the Norton County Hospital in Norton at the age of 56. He was born May 26, 1960 in Phillipsburg, the son of Henry & Marie (VanDerVeen) Pakkebier. He was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife Jeanette of the home; his mother, Marie of Densmore; 3 brothers: Larry, Kenneth & Harvey of Densmore; his sister, Sandra VanKooten of Phillipsburg; his mother-in-law, Sandra Portenier of Phillipsburg and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Larry Kaufman

Larry Kaufman, 82, of Wilson, Kansas, died on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at his home in Wilson, Kansas.

Larry was born on July 15, 1934, in Russell County, Kansas, the son of Frank and Mollie (Schultz) Kaufman. He grew up in the Dorrance and Bunker Hill areas and graduated from Dorrance High School. He attended Brown Mackie College before going into the United States Army Infantry, where he served in Germany. After serving his country, he attended Emporia State College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. For the majority of his career, he taught business at Belleville High School where he also sponsored the junior classes. He loved being a teacher. After retirement, he spent many years taking care of his mother, gardening at his farm and visiting with family.

Surviving family include his sister in-law Alice Kaufman of Wilson, Kansas; nephews Russell Kaufman of Wichita, Kansas and Roger Kaufman (Patty) of New Braunfels, Texas; niece Teresa Hart (Barry) of Bonner Springs, Kansas; great nephews and nieces Trent, Tim, Alice and John Kaufman, Wendy Allen and Tracy Anderson. Larry’s family also included 10 great-great nieces and nephews which he greatly enjoyed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Francis and Gene Kaufman and an infant sister.

A private family burial will take place at the Wilson Cemetery in Wilson, Kansas. A public memorial service will take place at a later date and time. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Virginia Berry

WAKEENEY, KS — Virginia Berry, 79, of WaKeeney, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017.

Patricia Ann Schandler

Logan resident Patricia Ann Schandler passed away January 14 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS at the age of 81. She was born Jan. 26, 1935 in Kansas City, MO.  She was the daughter of Frank & Marie (Glennemeier) Riemann.

Survivors include her husband Eugene of the home; her son Tom of Logan and 2 grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Church, Logan, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Visitation will be from noon to 9:00 Friday at the funeral home.

A Rosary will be held Friday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Logan Funeral Home.

Dennis N. Paulsen

Phillipsburg resident Dennis N. Paulsen passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at his home at the age of 70.

He was born August 27, 1946 in Phillipsburg, Kansas the son of John & Alice (Austin) Paulsen.

He was united in marriage to Marcia Francis on May 5, 1968 in Phillipsburg, KS, she preceded him in death August 21, 2013.

Survivors include two daughters, Tiffany VanDerVeen & husband Curtis of Prairie View, KS & Courtney Martin & husband, Tyler of Boston, MA; two sisters, Miriam Sansom of Edmond, KS & June Aubushon & husband, Milt of Phillipsburg, KS; and two grandchildren, Michael & Chloe VanDerVeen.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2017 in the United Methodist Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Burial will follow in the Iowa Union Cemetery, Phillips County, KS.

Dennis will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family receiving friends Wednesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for visitation at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661.

Rena Mae Rathsack

screen-shot-2017-01-16-at-8-25-23-amRena Mae Rathsack, age 85 of hays, passed away June 7, 2015 at Hays medical Center in Hays. She was born April 7, 1930 to William and Beatrice Rathsack.

Rena was a retired Seargent in the US Army. She served in Germany, Okinawa right after Pearl Harbor and Hawaii.

She is survived by her special friends and caregivers, Kim and Terry Weigel and children of Hays, Craig and Jolene Hamel and children of Jacksonville, FL, Russ and Dawn Sharp and children of Edmond, OK, Scott and Christina Hamel and children of Stockton, Kyle and Teri Hamel and children of Gilbert, AZ, Shayne and Tiffany Hamel of Plant City, FL, her senior companion, Arlene Schlyer of Hays and first cousins, Joey and Mae Sazama of WI. and Jimmy and Sylvia Sazama of TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Robert and James Rathsack.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, June 13, 2015 at St. Nicholas of Myra Church in Hays. Burial with full military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Damar, KS.

Visitation will be Thursday 6 PM – 8 PM at and Friday 9 AM – 9:30 all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

There will be a combined rosary and vigil service at 7 PM Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Hearing Impaired or the Disabled Veterans’ Association.

Mabel Blanche Hoss

screen-shot-2017-01-16-at-8-23-36-amMabel Blanche Hoss, 101, died Friday, January 13, 2017, at Cedar Village Long Term Care in Ness City where she had lived since 2001.  She was born on January 11, 1916, to Lea and Maude (Gibson) Maranville on the family farm southeast of Ness City.

Mabel was schooled at home until fourth grade, then attended rural schools and graduated from Ness City High School in 1935.  She married her classmate, George Hoss, on July 31, 1941.  He died January 20, 1979.  Although they did not have children, Mabel and George were enthusiastic supporters of the activities of their 30 nieces and nephews.  They helped raise their niece, Donna Roof Skinner, who lived with them for many years and always considered their house her home.

Throughout her working years, Mabel was an actively involved  farm wife.  She also enjoyed other careers.  She taught school for a combined nine years at one-room rural schools in Ness County, including Harold, Rosedale, Plum Creek, Manteno, and Nonchalanta.  From 1959-1961 she served as Probate Judge and County Judge for Ness County.  From 1961 till her retirement in 1978 she was Postmaster in the Ness City Post Office.  Her husband died shortly after her retirement.  From 1979-1998 Mabel spent the greater part of each year as a “snowbird” in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas.

During her early years Mabel was very active, along with her whole family, in the Oddfellows and Rebekah lodges.  When she married she joined the Catholic Church.  She was professionally active in the Postmasters Association, Business and Professional Women’s Organization, and was an avid supporter of the Ness County Historical Society.  Hobbies included quilting and travel to both U.S. and foreign destinations.

Survivors include niece Donna Skinner of Davis CA; and many other nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister Marie Harrel and her brother Rex Maranville.

Rite of Christian Burial Service was held Saturday, January 14, 2017, 9:30 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas.

Geneva A. Gingles

Logan, KS resident Geneva A. Gingles passed away, Friday, January 13, 2017 at the Logan Manor in Logan at the age of 85.

She was born October 5, 1931 the daughter of Gerrit & Anna (Van Zuuk) Van Loenen.

She was married to Gailard Book on April 22, 1950 in Beloit, KS.  He passed away on August 15, 1989.  She then married Armand D. Gingles on November 29, 1991 in Logan, KS.  He also preceded her in death on April 9, 2012.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Marjorie Nonhof & Edna Van Loenen; and a daughter, Elaine Book in 1979.

Survivors include 3 sons, Gerrit Book & wife, Nita of Chandler, AZ, Larry Book & wife, Sharlene of Oxford, KS & Dale Book & wife, Connie of Salina, KS; 2 daughters, Shirley McClendon & husband, Mack of Topeka, KS and Nancy Cook & husband, Kelly of Hays, KS; 16 grandchildren; & 21 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Logan, KS, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery, Prairie View, KS.

A Scriptural Wake & Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Logan Funeral Home, 102 E. Church Street, Logan, KS  67646.  Following the Rosary, the family will receive friends for visitation from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral  home.

Geneva will lie in state Wednesday, January 18th from Noon until 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS, then from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home, 102 E. Church Street, on Thursday, January 19th.

Lois Jean Lowe

Lois Jean Lowe, 91, of Colby, died Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Kearney Regional Medical Center, in Kearney, NE. She was born November 10, 1925, in Russell Springs, KS, to Charles and Mabel (Ricketts) Lamb. Jean graduated from Winona High School in 1943 and then attended Colorado State Teacher’s College. She taught elementary school in both Russell Springs and Winona during World War II. On August 13, 1944, she married Edwin Jack Lowe, in Winona, KS. They owned and operated Lamb Mercantile in Winona for over forty years and ran Lowe Firestone in WaKeeney from 1960-1962. She also farmed, winning the Logan County Soil Conservation Award in 1989.

Jean loved her family, church and serving her community. She was a lifetime member of the Winona United Methodist Church, serving as church choir director, youth leader and was a longtime member of United Methodist Women. She also served on the Western Plains Art Association Board and wrote a popular community news column for the Oakley Graphic.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, and brother Jack Lamb.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Vickie) and Cynthia (Steve) Seideman; sister Donna Christensen; 5 grandchildren: Michelle Kirk, Christopher Lowe, Jenaya Van Horn, Brie Meschke and Mariah Van Horn Trujillo and 12 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2017, at the Colby United Methodist Church with burial in the Winona Cemetery.
