Ronald E. Berland

Ronald E. Berland, age 61, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at his home in Scott County, Kansas. He was born on March 10, 1955 in Minot, North Dakota, the son of Donald J. and L. Jean Berg Berland. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1971 he was a welder, oiler, and operator at the helium plant for KN Energy and a locator for Tallgrass Energy gas company.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include his Life Partner – Valarie Katich of Denver, Colorado, Mother – Jean Berland of Velva, North Dakota, Two Brothers – Dick Berland of Jamestown, North Dakota, Larry Berland of Hazen, North Dakota, One Sister – Linda Klein of Velva, North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his Father.

Memorials Services will be held at a later date.

Veda Cleo Blauer

Veda Cleo Blauer, 105, Hays, died Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

Charles D. ‘Charlie’ Farr

Charles D. “Charlie” Farr, 89, Hays, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at his home.

He was born March 9, 1927 on the family farm seven miles west of Stockton, the middle child of Roy and Ellen (Look) Farr. He was a graduate of Stockton High School and joined the U.S. Navy his senior year and went on to serve with the U.S. Navy during the end of World War II. On August 28, 1949 he married Darlene B. Buss at the Methodist Church in Stockton. He worked for the State of Kansas and in 1951 he started working for Lane Wells, where he would remain employed for the next 23 years. He worked for Great Guns for three years, and then went on to work at Liberty Enterprises for the next 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, was a life member of the Stockton VFW, and was a founding member of the Thursday morning coffee club that met at Daylight Donuts. Charlie loved to hunt and fish, collect barb wire, and take drives to check his wells and the family farm.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Darlene, of the home, two daughters; Karol Chaffee and Jerry Wilson of WaKeeney, and Cindy Farr of Ogallah, a brother; Donald Farr and wife Georgia of Stockton, a step-brother; Gordon McCauley of Hays, two grandsons; Brent Chaffee and Neal Chaffee, and nieces and nephews; Linda Ballard, Sharon Gutierrez, Kenneth Burge, and Steven Farr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Charles Alan Farr, and a sister and her husband; Margaret and Charlie Burge.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th Street. Inurnment with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard and the Hays American Legion Riders will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time on Tuesday at the church.

Ronald E. ‘Ron’ and Alfreda J. ‘Freda’ Broetzmann

Hays, Kansas – Ronald E. “Ron” Broetzmann, age 79, died Saturday, December 3, 2016, at his home. He was born February 22, 1937, in Pierre, South Dakota to Elmer and Lavina (Reed) Broetzmann.

Alfreda J. “Freda” Broetzmann died Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at her home. She was born September 25, 1938, in Schaffer, Kansas to Phillip and Esther (Tittel) Foos.

Ronald and Alfreda were married on May 27, 1956, in Holyrood, Kansas. They attended the Presbyterian church and moved to Hays in 2011.

Ron was a police officer for over 25 years working in Liberal, Great Bend, as a detective at Garden City and a Chief of Police at Goodland. After his police work, he was an insurance adjustor

at Farm Bureau in Pratt for ten years and retired in 1995. He received Policeman of the Year in Garden City and an accommodation from the FBI. Ron grew up in Holyrood and was a graduate of Holyrood High School. He was a veteran of the US Navy and served from 1956 to 1959. He enjoyed woodworking and his coffee group.

Freda was a bookkeeper at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department in Pratt, for ten years. She grew up in Great Bend, a graduate of Great Bend High School. She enjoyed reading and cooking. They both enjoyed spending time with their family and grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Pam Blau-Erickson and husband, Ken, Russell, KS; Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; three grandchildren, Joshua Blau and wife, Stacy; Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Danny and Daniel Hertel; two great grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman; Ron has two sisters, Betty Perrin, Bull Shoals, AK; and Marilyn Wormeringer, Shawnee, OK; and Alfreda has one sister, Jean Smith, Hays, KS.

They are preceded in death by their parents; one son, Ronald Craig Broetzmann; one grandson, Steven Lee Hertel; one granddaughter, Ana Hertel and Alfreda’s brother, Bud Foos.

Services are at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. Burial at Mount Allen Cemetery Hays, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 7690.

Visitation is from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Barbara Jane Karlin

screen-shot-2016-12-05-at-7-52-32-amBarbara Jane Karlin, 78, Hays, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, in Hays. She was born June 7, 1938, in Utica, N.Y., to Charles and Beatrice (Girvin) Peters. She married Delmar Keil on Sept. 27, 1957. He preceded her in death Dec. 27, 1975. She married Omar Karlin on May 16, 1981.

She had worked at the Quick Pantry convenience store in Russell, Hays Sale barn and the ARC thrift shop in Hays. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays. She enjoyed crafts, puzzles and spending holidays especially Christmas with her family.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, Curtis Keil and wife, Debra, Garden City, and Dale Kiel, Russell; a daughter, Sheila Keil, Russell; two brothers, Tom Peters, Arizona, and Gary Peters, Wichita; and three grandchildren, David Keil and Drew Keil, both of Kansas City and Owen Keil, Hays.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays; inurnment will be at a later date.

Walker, Kansas – Francis J. “Frank” Riedel, age 86, died Sunday, December 4, 2016, at his home.

Donald Lee Norden

Donald Lee Norden, rural Kensington, died Thursday, December 1, 2016 at his home at the age of 84.

Don was born August 12, 1932 in Phillips County, KS the son of Henry D. & Ida Marie (Dettmer) Norden.  He was a farmer.

He was united in marriage to Loretta Ann Farris on April 15, 1956 in Kensington, KS.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his 4 daughters, Jeri Hunter of Kirwin, Sue Roush of Lebanon, Connie Ortgies of Hastings, NE, and Jackie Swatzell of Phillipsburg; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and a sister, Lelia Grauerholz of Kensington.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m.  Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kensington, with Pastor’s Lorna Paulus & Joel Hiesterman officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Kensington.

Don will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday & 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS  67661.  The casket will remain closed.

Clara Colleen (Koppes) Burroughs

screen-shot-2016-12-05-at-10-56-50-amClara Colleen (Koppes) Burroughs passed away Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas at the age of 68. She was born on September 4, 1948 in San Mateo, California to Nicholas “Nick” and Veda (Bane) Koppes. After graduating from Miami Coral Park High School in Miami, Florida, she went on to graduate from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas in 1984 with a degree in nursing. In 1967 she was united in marriage to William E. Burroughs in Miami. They later divorced. They were blessed with a son, Bryan.

Colleen had a huge heart that was evident in everything she did. She enjoyed helping people, and her career as a nurse gave her the opportunity to touch countless lives; always encouraging her patients and bringing smiles to their faces, even in difficult times. As an animal lover, time with her German shepherds, Major and Dirk, was just as uplifting for her heart as it was for theirs. But the time she cherished the most was when she had opportunity to love on, and spoil her granddaughters.

Colleen is survived by her son Bryan Burroughs of Salina; daughter-in-law Cindy Burroughs of Topeka; and granddaughters Lexus and Jade Burroughs.
She was preceded in death by her parents Nick and Veda Koppes.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 5, 2016 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. Burial will follow at the Stockton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Colleen showed us by her daily example how to live uncomplicated in life, and unconditionally in love. Her heart and spirit were a continual source of strength and encouragement for those she loved and cared for. Although she will be greatly missed, she will forever be in our daily thoughts, words, and deeds.

John Alfred (Jack) Larson

John Alfred (Jack) Larson passed away Monday, November 28, 2016, in Cheyenne, Wyoming at age 92.  He was born October 28, 1924, the son of John Ephraim Larson and Florence Isabel Gibbs. 

As a young man, he enjoyed working with horses, and earned pocket money breaking them to ride.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on December 31, 1942, and served three years, two months, and four days, discharged as a Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class on February 13, 1946. His main duty station while in the service was in Waimanalo, Hawaii, as a member of Standard Landing Craft Unit (SLCU) 12.  Waimanalo was designated an Amphibious Training Base, and John spent much of his time training U.S. Navy personnel to operate LCMs (Landing Craft Mechanized).

He married Mary Lou Mather on June 27, 1947, and they spent the early part of their marriage in Newcastle, Wyoming, where his mother’s family lived.  After a short time, they moved back to Wallace County, where he worked as a dairy farmer.  During his lifetime, some of his activities involved participating in the 7th Cavalry Drill team, serving on the ASCS Committee, Fair Board, Mountain Empire Dairyman’s Association, and he enjoyed bowling on Tuesday nights.  He and Mary Lou retired from dairy farming and moved back to Newcastle in 1987.  While retired, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, woodworking, and leathercraft, as well as playing cards with relatives.

He is survived by son Larry Larson (Sherry Larson) of Oak Grove, Missouri, and daughter Mary Anne Larson (Chris Roger) of Arvada, Colorado; sisters Ellen Larson Huffman (Jack Huffman, deceased) of Thornton, Colorado, Lois Larson Fischer Wiles (Earl Wiles) of Leoti, Kansas, Elizabeth (Betty) Larson (Kenneth Schreiber) of Laguna Hills, California, brothers:  Joseph Larson of Manhattan, Kansas, and Richard Larson of Thornton, Colorado.  He was preceded in death by Father John Ephraim Larson and Mother Florence Isabel Gibbs, Stepmother Ella DeBeer Larson, sister Margaret Larson Cheney; Brother Floyd Larson; and Brother Paul Larson.

Funeral services for Jack will be held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 10:30 AM MT at the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs with Pastor Duncan Ibuuri and Reverend Paul McNall officiating.  Burial with Military Honors will take place in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.

Frank Windholz

Frank Windholz, Arvada, CO, 72, passed from this life on November 29, 2016 in the loving presence of his family who loved him deeply and unconditionally just as he had always loved them. It is with a heavy heart that Frank’s earth family will say farewell.

Frank was born on February 5, 1944 in Hays, KS, to Alfred and Alice (Walters) Windholz. He attended Jefferson West Grade School in Hays and was a 1962 graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy. He was the school’s Battalion Commander in his senior year, and a Kansas High School All-State and High School All American football player. Frank attended the University of Wyoming where he played football for four years and received his BA in Speech and English.

Frank was a high school English teacher and athletic and debate coach for nearly 40 years. He coached football at Mullen High School, Bishop Machebeuf High School and was football and baseball coach at Lakewood High School, all in the Denver metro area. He coached his team to a Colorado state baseball championship at Lakewood High School in 1970. He most recently taught at and retired from Pomona High School where he loved, respected and believed in his students. In turn, his students held him in the highest esteem throughout his teaching career.

Frank married Judy Schneider in 1966 and from this marriage he had two children, Jeff and Kim. He later married Victoria Mason in 1974. Two children, Paxton and Brianna, blessed this marriage. His children were his source of deep and enduring love, pride and joy.

Frank was a gourmet chef and was well known for his famous German and Italian fare. It was always a great event when Frank was manning the stove. His passion for football continued throughout his life as did his love for great literature. Frank was best known and loved for his generosity, his dedication to the teaching profession, his wisdom and his devotion to his family and his children.

Survivors include his son Paxton and wife Strawberry, Arvada, CO; daughter Brianna Windholz, Arvada, CO; daughter-in-law Debbie Windholz, Dacono, CO; his granddaughter Danielle Windholz and great-granddaughter Aden Windholz, Boulder, CO and his brother Ken Windholz and wife, Jolene, Hays, KS.

Frank was preceded in death by his son Jeff and daughter Kim, his sister Mary Beth (Windholz) Lind, brother James Windholz, and his parents Alfred and Alice Windholz.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Advantage Runyan Stevenson Chapel, 6425 West Alameda Avenue, Lakewood, CO 80226.
