Laura ‘Jean’ Rowton

screen-shot-2016-12-01-at-7-54-13-amLaura “Jean” Rowton, age 87, died on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on December 2, 1928 in Horace, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Richardson and Nellie Rebecca Davis Farmer.

She lived in Scott City since 1950 having moved from Tribune, Kansas.

She was the Preceptor of Beta Tau Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a member of the American Legion Auxillary #183, and UMW.

On March 25, 1950 she married Bud Rowton in Syracuse, Kansas. He passed away on July 13, 2009 in Scott City, Kansas.

William W. Artz

Former Phillipsburg resident William W. Artz passed away November 22, 2016 at the West Anaheim Medical Center in Anaheim, CA at the age of 39. He was born August 10, 1977, the son of Kenneth & Linda (Groom) Artz. He was an addiction counselor at Hope By The Sea.

Survivors include his parents, Ken & Linda of Phillipsburg, aunts & uncles and several cousins.

Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating.

Calvin Gill

Calvin Gill, son of Vernon and Alberta (Bauguess) Gill, was born on December 21, 1934, on a farm in rural Graham County, Kansas, and passed away at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas on November 28, 2016, at the age of 81.

Calvin and Anise Grunert were united in marriage in Norton, Kansas on May 13, 1956.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Anise, Norton; two children, Cynthia, and husband, Don Davis; Timothy, and wife, Kelley Gill; one sister, Viola, and husband, Wayne Belden; one brother-in-law, Dean Shearer; four grandchildren, Sarah and Madeline Davis, Tyson and Kailey Gill; several other relatives and friends.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Gill, Veryl and Alberta McCall; in-laws, Viola Grunert, Charles and Estella Grunert; one brother, Bonnell Gill; one sister, Nellie Shearer.

She was born September 25, 1938, in Schaffer, Kansas to Phillip and Easter (Tittel) Foos. She married Ronald E. Broetzmann on May 27, 1956, at Holyrood, Kansas.

She was a bookkeeper at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department in Pratt, Kansas for ten years. She grew up in Great Bend, a graduate of Great Bend High School and a member of the Presbyterian at Great Bend. She moved to Hays in 2011, she enjoyed reading, cooking, her family and spending time her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Ron Broetzmann, of the home, two daughters, Pam Blau-Erickson and husband, Ken, Russell, KS; Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays, KS; three grandchildren, Joshua Blau and wife, Stacy; Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Danny and Daniel Hertel; two great grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman; and one sister, Jean Smith, Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bud Foos; one son, Ronald Craig Broetzmann; one grandson, Steven Lee Hertel and one granddaughter, Ana Hertel.

Josita Pfannenstiel, 83, Hays, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center.

James Peteete

James Peteete, age 96, of Hays, passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 in Hays. He was born October 20, 1920 in Singleton, Texas to John Henry and Ollie (Blount) Peteete. He married Clarice Elaine Kelly on October 19, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corp where he attained the rank of Tech SGT. During his distinguished military career he was stationed in England. He was with the 8th Air Force 458th Heavy Bomb Group. During his service he was part of the first daylight bombing run over Berlin. His plane was shot down over Holland on March 6, 1944 and he was a POW for fifteen months. He received a Purple Heart and the Golden Caterpillar for his service.

James was a retired Iron worker and welder. He helped to build Silo Bases throughout Kansas and also worked on Gross Memorial Coliseum. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hays and the Hays VFW Post 9076. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting deer and raccoons, and woodworking building tables, chairs and rebuilding antique furniture. He also ran the Hays Farmers Market for over thirty years.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Clarice of Hays; five sons, James Kelly Peteete of Mankato, KS, Terry Lynn Peteete (Rama) of Kansas City, MO, John Michael Peteete (Connie) of Independence, MO, Matthew Wayne Peteete of Moundridge, KS, Sean Timothy Peteete of Hays; two daughters, Linda Elaine Maxey of Kansas City, MO and Rebecca Sue Herrman (Curt) of Manhattan, KS, 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Patrick Leroy Peteete and a sister, Evelyn.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday, December 2, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Hays. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

John ‘Jack’ Leroy Bedker

John “Jack” Leroy Bedker, 90, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Swedish Medical Center in Denver.

He resided at the Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, Kansas following the death of his wife, “Snooks.” After their marriage, he was a longtime resident of Colorado where he worked as a teacher and a coach. Construction work then took him across the United States including Oregon, Washington, Florida, and California before retiring in Surprise, Arizona.

Jack was born on March 7, 1926 in North Platte, Nebraska to Guy Leroy and Sarah (Howes) Bedker. He was one of three children.

Jack grew up in Nebraska and Arizona and he graduated from Seligman High School in 1944. He went on to further his education at the Colorado State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and then went on to Arizona State University where he received his Master’s Degree. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II.

On January 26, 1946, Jack married Wilma “Snooks” Burnett in Sharon Springs. To this union four children; Anne, John, Thom and Tim were born.

An award winning high school basketball coach in Colorado, he was an avid sports fan. He loved hunting and deep sea fishing. He enjoyed listening to country music, especially Willie Nelson, and loved reading western novels. Jack had a special fondness for strawberry ice cream and cookies, all cookies.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Wilma “Snooks” Bedker, one grandson Bentley John Bedker and one granddaughter Molly Erin Bedker Bryant.

He is survived by his daughter Anne Hutcheson and her husband Lynn of Port Matilda, PA, son John L. Bedker II and his wife Linda of Breckinridge, CO, son Thom Bedker of Arizona, and a son Tim Bedker of Kansas, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; Phyllis Yoder of Wauneta, NE, and Barbara Perry of Wichita, KS.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Jack will be held on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 10:30 AM MT at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Sharon Springs with Father Norbert Dlabal officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Memorials may be designated to the Wallace County High School football program and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Goodland, KS 67735.

Jack Everett Pancake

pancake-picLifelong Sharon Springs, Kansas, resident Jack Everett Pancake, 93, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at his home in Sharon Springs with his family by his side.

Jack was born on September 17, 1923 in Sharon Springs, Kansas, the son Jessie and Lulu (Brewster) Pancake. He was one of three children. He was baptized in the Christian Church in Sharon Springs.

Growing up in Sharon Springs, Jack attended school there up through the 11th grade, at which time he went into military service. Jack served our country in the United States Army from April of 1943 until December of 1945 as a Technician 5th Grade in the 679 Fort Company. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

When he returned from the Service, he helped his father farm. Along with farming he worked on the Railroad, helped build the Stover Elevator, helped build the new Highway 40 through Wallace County and worked nights for seven years at the Power Plant.

On February 23, 1963, Jack married Georgia Lock in Sharon Springs. To this union, one son Gary was born. Jack worked most of his life as a farmer.

He was very active serving his community. He was involved with the Sharon Springs Police Department, the Wallace County Sherriff’s Department and the Volunteer Fire Department.

Preceding Jack in death was his parents, one sister Esther, one brother Bill and a daughter-in-law Amy Pancake.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Georgia of the home, his son Gary Pancake and his wife Candace and their son Cody, all of Sharon Springs, Kansas. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Ellen Pancake of Sharon Springs, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services for Jack were Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 10:30 AM MT at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Duncan Ibuuri and Reverend Paul McNall officiating. Burial followed with Military Honors in the Sharon Springs Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, November 29, 2016 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM MT at the Church in Sharon Springs.

Harold O. Parker

Former Long Island, KS, resident Harold O. Parker passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Sherman County Good Samaritan Society, Goodland, KS at the age of 96.

He was born in Phillips County, KS on May 11, 1920 the son of Henry Joy & Mary Oda (Hoy) Parker.  He was a farmer and helped run the grocery store in Long Island for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella; an infant son, Leland; son, Robert ; daughter-in-law, Rosanna Parker; and a brother, Wilbur Parker.

Survivors include his son, Lauren Parker & wife, Geralyn of Goodland, KS; 4 grandchildren, Brad Parker of Goodland, Tony Parker & wife, Amy of Manhattan, KS, Fr. Nicholas Parker of Chicago, IL, and Jillian Korte & husband, Andrew of Sharon Springs, KS; and 1 great grandson, Cole Parker.

Cremation was planned.  Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 in the Long Island United Methodist Church, Long Island, with Pastor Ted Stapleton & Fr. Nicholas Parker officiating.

Neal A. Petrie

Neal A. Petrie, age 87, of Oakley, died Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Colby Health and Rehab Center, Colby.

He was born on September 1, 1929 in Pratt, KS to Samuel David Petrie and Clara Francis (Gessley) Petrie. Neal married Retha Loree Roberts on November 12, 1949 in Oakley. He was a Soil Conservation Service Technician and farmer. Neal enjoyed hunting and fishing, farming, and was an arborist.

Preceded in death by his parents, brother Stanley, and two sisters, Bernice Dickinson and Marian Machtan.

Survivors include his wife Retha of the home, son Gary Petrie and wife Cindy of Everett, PA, daughter, Janis Petrie of Bandon, OR, and granddaughter, Katelyn Dibert and husband Derek of Bedford, PA.

Helen L. Balthazor

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-10-47-27-amHelen L. Balthazor, age 86 of Concordia, passed away on Sun., Nov. 27, 2016 at the Smoky Hill Health & Rehab Center, Salina, KS. Helen was born on Nov. 9, 1930 in Concordia, KS to Grant Palmer & Sophronia Helen (Buoy) Appleby.

Helen attended schools in the Ames area. She married Armand J. Balthazor on Sept. 14, 1948 in Clyde, KS. During the 50’s, Helen and Armand operated several local restaurants in the Clyde and Clifton area, including the Clyde Cafe. They also operated a restaurant in Eugene, OR until returning to Concordia to operate the Frontier Cafe. Helen also worked at Nicholson Drug Store for many years and later returned to school and was an LPN at St. Joseph Hospital in Concordia. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia. For the past two years, Helen was a resident of the Smoky Hill Rehab Center in Salina where she enjoyed a renewed quality of life.

As the last of her generation, Helen is survived by her husband, Armand, Concordia; sons: James Balthazor (Cindy), Russell, Fred Balthazor, Overland Park, Greg Balthazor, Shawnee, Patrick Balthazor (Jamie), Concordia; daughters, Cynthia Cleveland (Michael), Salina & Christine Sevigny, Topeka; several grandchildren & great grandchildren & numerous nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Martha Jane Partch (Leo) & Bonnie Caron (Joe); a brother, Wilbur Appleby (Josephine); grandson, Kirk Balthazor & infant great grandson, Benjamin Cleveland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Thurs., Dec. 1, 2016 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia with Fr. David Metz & Fr. Larry Letourneau officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Clyde. Visitation will be Wed., Nov. 30, 2016 from 10 am to 9 pm with a Vigil service and Altar Society Rosary at 6 pm, with the family greeting friends after the Rosary, all at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.

Elsie Runnion

Former Phillipsburg resident Elsie Runnion passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS at the age of 96.

She was born in Fort Morgan, CO on Sept. 14, 1920, the daughter of George & Molly (Reiber) Wagner.  Her husband, Francis Runnion, preceded her in death on July 4, 1991.

Survivors include her four sons:  Niles and Randy, both of Phillipsburg, KS; Richard of Ottumwa, IA; and Stanley, of Prairie View, KS; one daughter, Carol Shove, of Noonan, GA;       numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Gregg Runnion officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Runnion will lie in-state on Wed., Nov. 30, from 5-9 p.m. and again Thursday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends Thursday evening from       6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Lowell Gene McKanna

screen-shot-2016-11-29-at-7-51-43-amLowell Gene McKanna, 85, of Newton, Kansas, and formerly of Luray, Kansas, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016, at Asbury Park Campus in Newton.

Lowell was born on January 22, 1931, in Luray, Kansas, the son of Charles Lester and Pricilla Waive (Glasgow) McKanna. He grew up in Luray and graduated from Luray High School.

Lowell served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Two of those years he was stationed in Germany before returning to Luray.

Lowell met and fell in love with Ursula while he was stationed in Germany. She followed him to America where they were united in marriage on March 8, 1955, in Russell, Kansas. This union was blessed with four daughters; Christine, Debra, Stephany and Andrea. They made their home in Luray.

Lowell was owner and operator of McKanna Oil Co. from 1955 to 1994. He delivered fuel and propane to the farmers and families in the Luray area. He was a member of the Luray United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. During his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, playing golf, traveling, and riding motorcycles. His latter years were often spent watching sporting events and reading car magazines. His passion for vehicles began at a very young age.

Surviving family include his wife of 61 years, Ursula of the home; four daughters, Christine Cederberg (Kyle) of Hillsboro, Kansas, Debra Scott (Greg) of Salina, Kansas, Stephany Seirer (Jeff) of Andover, Kansas and Andrea McKanna of Beloit, Kansas; sister, Signa Heffel of Hays, Kansas; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sondra Cherry and grandson, Drew Cederberg.

Celebration of Lowell’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 1, 2016, at the Luray United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Luray City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Visitation will be held the day of the service from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the church where the family will be present to greet friends. A memorial has been established with the Luray United Methodist Church and/or Russell V.F.W. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
