John Ray Bushnell, age 79, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at Harlan County Health System in Alma, NE.
He was born to John Wellington Bushnell and Sarah Frances (Eller) Bushnell on August 11, 1937, in Speed, KS. Ray graduated from Agra High School in 1956, and attended Kansas Wesleyan University on a football scholarship.
He was united in marriage to Janet Ann Freed, April 15, 1958, in Belleville, KS. Ray and Ann moved to Phillipsburg in October, 1958. Ray worked for Farmland Industries, Coop Refinery, and USD 325. He retired in 1999, after serving as a custodian for 17 years at Phillipsburg Middle School. Ray enjoyed working with people and made many life-long friends. Many times, he has said “Strangers are just friends that I haven’t met yet.”
Ray had many hobbies, including coon hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards & snooker, and watching any sporting event or activity involving his grandkids.
To say that he loved animals would be an understatement. The family had pets ranging from raccoons & pigeons, to dogs & cats. It comforts his family to know that he is now able to enjoy his time with his beloved dog “Alex,” and the many other furry friends that touched his heart throughout his life.
Ray and Ann married young and grew up with their children. Family was always a high priority all through their lives. Ray was quite an all-around sportsman. He relived his own football playing days through his grandsons. He delighted in fishing and hunting with family and friends. He included his wife and children in his love of coon hunting. He would load up his dogs first, then Ann and the kids, driving in the darkness to the country creeks. He would tell the kids to be very quiet so he could hear his dogs baying on the scent of a coon and then he would take off on foot with his flashlight and gun after the dogs. He told Ann to watch for his blinking flashlight signal and drive to pick him up. Have you ever been in the dark of night looking for one blinking light—–but you see a million of them and wonder which one is Ray!!!!
When traveling with his family, whether it be short or long trips, someone would begin singing and all would join in. Ray enjoyed music but always said “I wish I could sing.” Many of the songs that were sung together have been passed down by Ray’s kids to their own children and grandchildren.
Ray spent many hours in the local pool hall with friends playing cards and snooker. He was on a traveling snooker team for several years. Due to a freak accident, he lost his left eye in 1981 which caused him to give up the game. After a good deal of encouragement from family and friends, he played again and seemed to be better than ever before.
Ray was very fond of Ann’s father who was called “Pop” by all his grandchildren. So when the time came for Ray to have grandchildren, he also, wanted to be called Pop to continue the legacy. Ray was “Pop” to his grandkids and many of their friends over the years, as well as most of Jan’s daycare kids.
Ray loved a good home-cooked meal and always told others that he had married the best cook in the world. He looked forward to the meals that Ann would bring him while he was in the hospital.
Ray is survived by his wife, Ann, of Phillipsburg; son, Rick Bushnell, of Chanute, KS; 3 daughters, Jill Johnson & husband, Blane, of Wray, CO., Jaque Wickham & husband, Galen, & Janet Means & husband, Patrick, all of Phillipsburg; 2 sisters, Ellen Adee, & Gloria Babcock & husband, Don, of Phillipsburg; 2 brothers, Gary Eller, of Florissant, CO, & Warren Bushnell, of Wilson, KS; 8 Grandchildren; Allison Bohall & husband, Treece, of Wray, CO., Arika Luedke & husband, Eric, of Holyoke, CO., Garrett Wickham & wife, Jenny, of North Platte, NE., Gabriel Wickham, & Grant Wickham, of Phillipsburg, KS., Karsen James & husband, Robert, of Phillipsburg, Dylan Means and Kylah Ellis of Wray, CO., & Brock Means of Phillipsburg; 7 Great Grandchildren, Hannah, Lane, & Britt Bohall, Link, Lakyn, & Lindyn Luedke, and Kynslee Means, and many other relatives and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Bushnell & Sarah Bushnell; step mother, Lucy Bushnell; 2 brothers, Will J. Schalansky, & Earl F. Bushnell; and grandson, Weston Lane Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.
Ray will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday & again 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Never Flinch, The Foundation, which was established in memory of Ray’s Grandson, Weston, who lost his battle with cancer.
Marilyn (Hawkins) Hall passed away at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas on September 13, 2016 not too far from Dodge City, the place of her birth on August 18, 1930. Her parents were Clyde and Frances Hawkins. When she was a child the family moved to Merriam, Kansas and later to Fairway when her father began teaching chemistry and physics at Shawnee Mission Rural High School. Following in his footsteps, she earned her teaching degree in 1952 at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Marilyn then married Robert Clark and taught high school science in Beverly, Kansas. Together they had three children who survive her. When her children became older Marilyn continued her education and received a master’s degree from the University of Kansas in the Department of Special Education. She taught special education classes and became a “consulting teacher” helping other teachers in the Shawnee Mission School District.
Marilyn was soon recognized as an exceptional teacher and was sought out to teach high school dropout students at the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project (JGCP) in Kansas City, KS. Beyond her success in the classroom, she became a researcher at JGCP and earned her Doctoral Degree in Special Education at KU in 1975. Marilyn then received a federal grant to implement a program she designed called Responsive Parenting, which taught over 3,000 parents positive behavior management skills. Following that she went into private practice and specialized in counseling parents of children with behavioral problems. After finding that many of those parents had marital problems, which were negatively affecting their children’s behavior, she became a marital counselor and went on to help countless couples and families.
Having divorced, she married Dr. R. Vance Hall in 1977. Over the course of their careers they carried out research and gave seminars and presentations across the country. They authored and were editors of a series of manuals, which are still in print, designed to teach both parents and professionals behavior management skills (The ‘How to Teach’ Series). Their educational materials have been used widely and translated into Spanish, German, Hebrew, French, Portuguese, Swedish and Chinese. Beyond their professional lives they loved to travel the world together, and wherever she was, Marilyn especially loved time spent with family and friends.
Much to our sadness, Marilyn became ill while on the way across Kansas on a trip to once again visit some of our National Parks. She succumbed to the effects of influenza and viral pneumonia. Marilyn is survived by her husband, Vance Hall, her sister, Fran Nelson (Richard), her three children Douglas Clark (Catherine Thompson), Debra Goodman (Karl Bricker) and Julie Adams (Clyde); and three daughters who came into her life when she married Vance, Alison Dildine (Jamie), Darien Smith, and Laurel Stitzhal (David). She is also survived by eighteen loving grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and a host of others. She was an intelligent, caring and effective teacher, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many. We will miss her incredible zest for life and the color of her eyes. They were “that” blue!
A memorial service will be held at a future time at JGCP in Kansas City, Kansas. Memorial gifts may be sent to The R. Vance & Marilyn Hall Graduate Student Award Fund through the Kansas University Endowment Office, or to a charity of your choice. Gifts to the named fund may be made online at www.kuendowment.org/makeagift or by calling 1-800-444-4201 ext. 576.

Lyle Dilley, 91, of Hays, died Friday, September 23, 2016 at Hays Medical Center. He was born August 20, 1925 in Mount Hope, Kansas to Everett and Elizabeth Dilley. Lyle was married to Bonnie Brown in June of 1949. They were married in Leon, Kansas at the First Christian Church.
Lyle and Bonnie were both music majors at Wichita State University when they met. Following Lyle’s graduation with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music education, they moved to Belle Plain to begin their work together in music education. Lyle and Bonnie also began their family giving birth to their first son Allen. After two years at Belle Plain, Lyle and Bonnie moved on to Wellington where Lyle began a ten-year position in the Wellington School system. Lyle had responsibility for the marching band and junior high band. As a tribute to his accomplishments, the band received ten consecutive first-division ratings, and the senior band received two second-division ratings followed by eight consecutive first-divisions. Lyle also played for eleven seasons with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra as a bass trombonist. During their time in Wellington, the Dilley family expanded to include Barbara, Steven and David.
In 1961, Lyle accepted the position of Director of Bands and instructor of Low Brass at Fort Hays State University. Membership throughout the Tiger Marching Band grew from approximately 50 members in 1961 to our largest enrollment of 150 members in 1970. In addition to serving as Director of Bands, Lyle conducted the Hays Symphony; taught all low brass, brass methods, conducting, and supervised student teaching. In 1975, Lyle became the Director of the High Plains Band Camp (now High Plains Music Camp).
Throughout his distinguished career, Lyle organized a range of programs. Such programs include: the second Kansas High School Marching Band Competition in 1962, the first Kansas High School Invitational Concert Band Workshop in 1963, the first Kansas Inter-Collegiate Concert Band in 1975, and the Hays Symphony Guild in 1985. Lyle served as president of the KMEA (Kansas Music Educators Association) and in 1990 was admitted into the KMEA Hall of Fame. He retired as Professor at Fort Hays State and remained active in music education. He regularly served as a judge for area competitions, attended most musical performances here on FHSU’s campus, and supported the High Plains Music Camp by offering a low brass award. Lyle retired as Professor of Music from FHSU in 1989. Over his career in music education, Lyle’s mentoring encouragement and supportive words influenced many students and musicians to pursue excellence in music performance and education. In October 2015, Lyle received the FHSU Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment to advancing music education across the nation and recognizing his exemplary character and personal attributes. Lyle was a member Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity and a member of the Hays Lions Club
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents and brother Jerald. Carrying his banner forward are his wife Bonnie and 4 children, spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Dr. Allen Dilley of Winfield, Kansas, Mrs. Barbara (Dilley) Stecklein and her husband Gary of Burrton, Kansas, daughter Jennifer (Stecklein) Taylor and husband Jay of Kingwood, Texas with 2 children Brenden, Katelyn; Dr. Steven Dilley and his wife Chris of Windsor, Colorado, son Brett Dilley and his wife Shannon of Erie, Colorado with 1 child Paige and son Kendall Dilley of Chicago, Illinois; Mr. David Dilley and his wife Theresa with 7 children Rebekah (Dilley) Willman and her husband Eric of Omaha, Nebraska, Ben Dilley of Boulder, Colorado, Anna (Dilley) Hazard and her husband Justin of Lincoln, Nebraska, Caleb Dilley, Joshua Dilley, Andrew Dilley and Sarah Dilley all of Lincoln, Nebraska.
When Lyle wasn’t on a podium leading a musical ensemble or teaching a course in conducting, he enjoyed playing golf in his foursome which included, Arris Johnson, Jim Stansbury, and Don Bloss. He also managed the family farm near Wichita with his brother Jerald. Maintaining a well-manicured yard and making sure the birds were well fed all four seasons was very important. From his life, it was clear Lyle understood the value of investing in people. It was his passion to teach and mentor others – a passing of the baton to future generations. Those who came under his mentorship continue to express gratitude for the many ways Lyle impacted their lives. In the end, these testimonies serve as a reflection of his legacy.
A Celebration Service of Lyle’s life will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th Street, Hays.
