Patricia Vonfeldt

Patricia Vonfeldt, 83, loving mother and grandmother passed away in her home on August 16, 2019 with her sons and daughters by her side.

She is predeceased by her husband, Fritz, of 55 years. Survivors include 2nd husband, Rosemond Ervin; sister, Marilyn Zimmerman (Leon); sons, Ken (Kyle) Vonfeldt and Ron Vonfeldt; daughters, Becky (Les) Langley and Elaine (Trent) Sauder; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Viewing and visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday, August 20th at Broadway Mortuary. A rosary will be 7pm, Wednesday August 21st and Funeral Mass 10am, Thursday, August 22nd, both at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 861 N. Socora, Wichita.

Keith Allen Stoppel

Keith Allen Stoppel

Keith Allen Stoppel, 51, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, August 16, 2019, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Keith was born on June 22, 1968, in Russell, Kansas, the son of Janice and Melvin Stoppel. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1987. After high school he worked as a truck driver and worked for Praytor Construction, Groendyke, Love’s and Cerv’s. He was united in marriage to Nancy M. (Dole) Poche’ on September 01, 2012 in Russell, Kansas. When Nancy became ill, he devoted his attention full time to taking care of her needs. Nancy preceded him in death on March 02, 2019, in Russell. He enjoyed collecting guns, making custom knives, tinkering and restoring tractors and heavy machines and working with his hands. Keith was a wonderful cook and enjoyed working in his garden . He canned salsa, pickles , green beans and beets. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and being with and taking care of his wife up until her death.

Surviving family include his parents Melvin and Janice Stoppel of Russell; sisters Brenda Roberts and Melissa Dreher and husband Val all of Russell and step sons Dustin and Shane Poche’ both of Russell; he is also survived by nephew Dustin Dreher, nieces, Julie Dreher, Emily Dreher, Amanda Seirer, and Abby Dreher; grandchildren, Hannah Poche’ and Chandler Poche’.

A celebration of the funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, August 22, 2019, at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell, Kansas with Father Daniel Scheetz officiating. Cremation has been selected by the family and inurnment of the cremains will take place immediately following the mass at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the mortuary, with family greeting guests from 6 PM to 8 PM Wednesday evening at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to the Keith Stoppel Memorial and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Lynn Craig

Phillipsburg resident Lynn Craig passed away at his residence on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the age of 69.

He was born May 30, 1950 in Stockton, Kansas the son of Olen and Jessie (Anglin) Craig.

Survivors include his three sons, Shawn of Smith Center, KS, Justin of Hays, KS and Chad of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Stacy Hines of Carl Junction, MO and Chelsea Craig of Phillipsburg; two brothers, Richie Craig of Wichita, KS and Dannie Craig of Phillipsburg; two sisters, Tamara Craig of Wichita, KS and Marlene Holloway of Twin Valls, Idaho; and 10 Grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Lynn will lie in state Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel, with cremation to follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lynn Craig Memorial Fund.

Phillip James Harry

Phillip James Harry, 67, of Colby, died Friday, August 16, 2019, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS. He was born May 19, 1952, in Atwood, KS, to Everett and Adella (Vrbas) Harry. On September 15, 1979, he married Dorothy Havel, in Atwood. Phillip worked at the Colby Super Market, ran the projectors at the Colby Theater, and then went on to work maintenance at Sacred Heart Church and Grade School, Colby, Oakley High School and Colby Community College, before retiring. Phillip enjoyed watching football, especially college football, the Chiefs and the Colby Eagles, where he often worked the “Chain Gang” during games. He enjoyed fishing and bowling and he especially loved spending time with his family and his dog, Buddy James. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Colby.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Calvin Harry; sister, Glinda Guard; in-laws, Ralph and Ruth Havel; brothers-in-law, Richard Pabst, Leonard Havel, Raymond Havel and Edward Havel.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of the home; daughters, Paula (Terry) Wilt, Hays, KS, Kayla (Luke) Sawyer, Inman, KS and Brandi (Brian) Emmot, Levant, KS; grandchildren, Tyler Harry, Rylie Sawyer, Avery Sawyer and Melissa Emmot; sisters Gloria Pabst, Oakley, KS, Cheryl (Michael) Maggard, Wichita, KS and Regina Depperschmidt, Loveland, CO; brother-in-law, Gary Guard, Hays, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with a vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby, with burial in the church cemetery. Doris LaFern (Keil) Maier

Doris LaFern (Keil) Maier, 92, of Natoma, Kansas and formerly of Gove County and Russell County Kansas, passed away on Saturday Aug 17th, 2019 at the Ness City Hospital.

Doris was born on April 12, 1927 in rural Russell County as the first child to John and Anna (Krug) Keil. She grew up in the Bender Hill area in a Volga German community, and attended a one room school house at Holly through 8th grade. She grew up during the depression and Dustbowl days. Being the oldest child, much of her younger years were spent helping her mother with the household and raising her younger brothers.

Doris was united in marriage to Ruben Jacob Maier on November 10th, 1946 at the Bender Hill Lutheran Church. They first made their home in Russell County in a stone house that was the childhood home of Ruben’s mother, Katie Dumler. It was here that their first son Tom was.

They moved to Gove County where they raised a family of 6 children and operated a farm and ranch from 1951-1972. She was an active member of the Oakley Lutheran Church frequently teaching in Sunday school and vacation bible school. She was an active member of the Extension Home Makers Unit.

In 1972, the family moved to Natoma, Kansas where the family continued with farming and ranching of Angus cattle. She was active in the Natoma Lutheran Church where she was in the women’s guild and sang in the choir. She was the director for the Natoma Housing Authority and the Natoma Thrifty Market. She was active in the Natoma Heritage Seekers and the Volga Germans Historical Society.

Her great joy in life was always family life. Her face always lit up to see a family member. She was a passionate gardener with a very green thumb and operated a home greenhouse. She enjoyed playing the organ, singing, and traveling. A highlight of the year was often a family summer vacation to the western mountains of the United states, picnicking, fishing and exploring. It was a great joy in her life when she and Ruben traveled to Europe and visited Germany where she was able to converse with the locals in her childhood language.

Doris’s surviving family include: her brother Dean (Ruth) Keil of Russell, her sister-in-law Elsa (Marvin) Keil of Colby Kansas, Carolyn (Larry) Keil, Lincoln Nebraska, sons Martin (Iva) Maier of Natoma, Steve (Cindy) Maier, Brownell, daughter Janna (Peter) Belau, Pagosa Springs, CO and Savannah, GA, daughter-in-law Donna (Tom) Maier Russell and many grand, great grand and great great grandchildren.

Doris was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Ruben, 3 sons Tom, John and Mikey, brothers Marvin, Larry and infant brother Melvin.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Natoma Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. on Wednesday the day of the service. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or Cedar Village Long Term Care and sent in care of the mortuary. Benjamin ‘Ben’ Jacob Arnhold

Benjamin “Ben” Jacob Arnhold, 76, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 at Russell Regional Hospital.

Ben was born January 7, 1943 in Hays, Kansas to Alexander and Marie (Schlageck) Arnhold. After birth they moved to Herington until Ben was 10 years old at which time the family moved to Russell, Kansas. He graduated from Russell High School and then attended Ft. Hays State University.

Ben was united in marriage to Shirley Krug on August 14, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell. This union was blessed with four children; Anthony, Angela, Lorraine and Alexander.

Ben served his country in the U.S. National Guard for 6 years and was activated from 1968 to 1969 at Ft. Hood Texas.  After serving in the Army they returned to the Russell area.

Ben was an auto body technician and mechanic for the Arnhold Chevrolet Dealership in Russell for many years.  Later in life he worked in the oil field for a few years and become a home painter. Afterword’s he become head of maintenance at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Ben retired from working early to care for his aging parents.  He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Russell American Legion.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles, drag racing, hunting, fishing, gardening, reading, taking care of animals and researching the stock market.

Ben’s surviving family includes his wife of 54 years, Shirley of the home; daughter, Lorraine Kasten (Shawn) of White City, Kansas; sons, Anthony Arnhold (Lorri) of Trinidad, Colorado and Alexander Arnhold (Kendra) of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Roselyn Heckman (Jay) of Phoenix, Arizona; six grandchildren, Tonya Mincic (Matt), Todd Arnhold (Cheyenne), Jacob Kasten, Gavin Arnhold, Madison Arnhold and Ethan Arnhold; and four great grandchildren.

Ben was preceded in death by his infant daughter Angela Lynn Arnhold, his parents and his sister Charlotte Caywood.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, August 19, 2019 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  Memorials have been established with Knights of Columbus or St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Charles Gregory ‘Greg’ Rousey

Charles Gregory “Greg” Rousey, 34, passed away August 13, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born August 3, 1985, the son of Charles “Chuck” Rousey and Cathy Whiting.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Charles was a member of the Rosewood Action Club and the Mormon Church in Independence. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, horseback riding and especially loved his dogs.

Survivors include, his father, Chuck Rousey and stepmother Debbie of Muskogee, OK; his mother, Cathy Whiting of Hoisington; his significant other, David Hester, Jr. of the home; two half-sisters, Maria Montgomery of Independence and Bobbie Richie of Oklahoma City, OK; one half-brother, Jake Rousey of Muskogee, OK; one stepsister, Carla Serrano of Muskogee, OK; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, maternal grandparents, one paternal aunt and one paternal uncle.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 23, 2019, at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding. Memorials are suggested in Memory of Charles Gregory Rousey, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Raymond Lee Bethel

Raymond Lee Bethel, 55, passed away August 15, 2019 at his home in Great Bend. He was born July 17, 1964 at Great Bend to Wylie Lee and Rita Marie (Debes) Bethel.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Raymond loved cars, animals, bowling, and semi trucks. He enjoyed being a part of the Special Olympics every year. He was a people person and always friendly.

Survivors include, two brothers, Ronald Bethel and wife Alicia of Newaygo, MI and Randy Bethel and wife Michelle of Pawnee Rock; two sisters, Ruby Alloway and husband Mark and Robin Bethel, all of Great Bend; six nieces, Brandi Ellis and husband Dustin of Great Bend, Kayley Bruinsma and husband John of Newaygo, MI, Leah Bethel of Newaygo, MI, Rochelle Bethel of Great Bend, Cheyenne Bethel and Kiara Bethel both of Pawnee Rock; and three nephews, Dustin Alloway and wife Lynee of Otis, Trenton Alloway and fiancé Ashley Mallow of Great Bend and Cody Bethel of Newaygo, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Luther and Opal Bethel and Lawrence and Mary Debes.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 19, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Paden presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice and Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Roy Lynn Jensen

Roy Lynn Jensen, age 66, of McCracken, Kansas, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 in Hays, Kansas surrounded by his family.  He was born January 16, 1953 in Hays, KS to Arthur Hans Jensen, Sr., and Rita Mae (Hauser) Jensen.

He is survived by his children:  Lucas Hans (Andrea) Jensen, of Hays; Jesse Roy Jensen (Laura Lemmons), of Munger; a daughter: Catherine Jensen, of Hays; 2 brothers: Arthur Hans Jensen, II, of Arvada, CO; Chris Jensen, of Salina; two sisters: Maren Kay Moody, of Hays; and Nancy Louise Parmer, of Hays.  Two grandchildren: Hailey RaeAnne Jensen, and Jensen Lewis Glendening.  Roy was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Memorial visitation will be Friday, August 23, 2019 from 5 PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and parish vigil service at 7 PM.  Saturday visitation will be 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Cremation entrusted to Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cancer Council of Ellis County or to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church
