Jerry J. Crenshaw

Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 12.35.40 PMJerry J. Crenshaw, 80, of Russell, Kansas died Sunday June 26, 2016 at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas.

Jerry was born June 13, 1936, in Arkansas City, Kansas, the son of Willis Alexander and Tilly Elizabeth (Leatherman) Crenshaw. He grew up in Alva, Oklahoma and graduated from Alva High School in 1954. He received his Bachelors’ Degree in Education from Northwestern State University at Alva and attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his Masters Degree in speech and did graduate work toward his PhD.

He was united in marriage to Terry Sue Brand on August 07, 1959, in Woodward, Oklahoma. To this union one child was born, their daughter, Sally. Jerry taught at Helena, Oklahoma, Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and at Fairfield Unified School District in Langdon, Kansas. In 1967 the family moved to Russell, Kansas where Jerry taught speech, debate, English and directed plays and musicals at Russell High School until his retirement in 1996. He was most proud of his debate teams’ accomplishments and their numerous winning seasons. He also took great pride in the musicals Oklahoma, Cinderella and the Sound of Music he directed. He pursued many hobbies, but was best known locally for his cheesecakes. He was a devoted Royals fan and enjoyed watching and attending Royals games with his family.

Surviving family include his wife Terry of the home, daughter Sally O’Dell and husband Mike of Topeka, Kansas, brothers Neil Crenshaw and wife Nancy of McIntosh, Florida and Jeff Crenshaw of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; sister Panhachet Joachims and husband Greg of Enid, Oklahoma and grandchildren Jeremiah O’Dell and Kelsey Reed and husband Corbin all of Topeka, Kansas and his dog Winthorpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at 3 PM on Friday, July 15, 2016, at the Deines Cultural Center in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Cremation has preceded the service. Memorials may be given to the High Plains Humane Society of Hays, Kansas or Rebecca A. Morrison House of Salina, Kansas, and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Marvin Richard Strecker

Marvin was born on May 5, 1927 on the family farm south of Russell in the Smoky Hill River area. He was the son of George David and Elizabeth (Stettinger) Strecker. He grew up in the Russell County area.

Marvin served his country in the U.S. Army in the Occupational Forces in Germany after WWII. He was a radio operator. After his tour of duty he returned to Lucas, Kansas.

Marvin was united in marriage to Naomi Gerdes on October 18, 1953 in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children; Laurel, Jim and Mary. They made their home on the farm near Lucas.

Besides farming, Marvin was a Television and Electronics Technician. He worked for Johnson’s Hardware in Mentor, Kansas before moving to Emporia, Kansas where he worked for Montgomery Ward. Then they moved to Gorham, Kansas and he worked for Music Manor. Then they moved to Russell where he worked at Gamble’s before starting his own business. He was the owner and operator of Strecker TV and Appliance in Russell. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting; doing cross word puzzles, watching his Royals play ball and traveling the country with Naomi.

Surviving family include his wife of 62 years, Naomi of the home; daughters, Laurel Strecker of Russell, Kansas and Mary Strecker of Grandview, Missouri; son, Jim Strecker (Juanita Piedimonte) of Harrisonville, Missouri; sister, Thelma Blasé of Sylvan Grove, Kansas; granddaughter, Valiha Strecker (Mark Dedovesh) of Irvine, California; and great grandson, Grayson Dedovesh. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother and four sisters.

Celebration of Marvin’s Life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the St. John Lutheran Church. Cremation has preceded the services. Memorials have been established with the Russell Regional Hospital or the Russell County Food Pantry. Josie Mae Sellens

Josie Mae Sellens, 94, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, July 11, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas.

A celebration of Josie’s life will be held at 1 P.M. on Monday, July 18, 2016, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Monday, July 18, 2016 at the mortuary.

Dakota Lynn Frost

Frost,DakotaDakota Lynn Frost, 23, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016 at his home.

Dakota was born September 16, 1992 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Gerald and Vickie (Pence) Frost. He grew up and attended schools in Natoma, Salina and Russell.

Dakota started working in the oil patch when he was 17 years old. He was a roughneck and driller. He enjoyed the oil field life very much. He also worked a short time for APCO Wire.

Dakota attended the Trinity United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt, fish,and work on cars with his dad and brothers. He also enjoyed video games. He loved spending time with family and greatly enjoyed playing with his nieces and nephews.

Dakota’s surviving family include his father, Gerald Frost and mother, Vickie Frost both of Russell, Kansas; twin brother, Dalton Frost, brother Ethan Frost (Mercadies Cosgrove) of Russell, Kansas; brother, Shane Michaelis of Colorado; sisters, Amanda Fabian Valadez (Cruz Enoe) of Russell, Kansas and Amber Frost of Lawrence, Kansas; grandmother, Marjoane Frost of Russell, Kansas; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell. Friends may greet the family the morning of the service from 9:00 AM to service time at the church. Cremation has preceded the services. Lorene ‘Renie’ Mae Kuhn

She was born July 24, 1933 in Munjor, Kansas to Fidelis and Adeline (Befort) Engel. She graduated from Girl’s Catholic High in 1951 and attended college. She married Louis Kuhn of Victoria, Kansas in Munjor, Kansas at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on December 29, 1951.

Renie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Daughters of Isabella, a Guardian Angel of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, a life member of the St. Joseph’s Christian Mothers, and Epsilon Epsilon Sorority which raised charitable funds. She was a CCD teacher for 25 years and was a faithful and devout servant to our Lord. She enjoyed many activities including the theatre, movies, playing cards, bunco, slot machines, walking and exercise and especially traveling with Louie.

She is survived by her husband, Louis of Hays; a son, Louis Kuhn Jr. (Patty) of Omaha, Nebraska; three daughters, Jackie Sue Kuhn of Topeka, Kansas, Kelly Lynn Kuhn (Gary) of London, England and Tasha Renee Kuhn Aubey (Kelly) of Phoenix, Arizona; four grandchildren, Chuck Dinkel, Jeff Dinkel, Michelle (Josh) Davis and Jade Renee Aubey and two great granddaughters, Breanna Dinkel and Alyssa Dinkel; four sisters, Benita Rohr of Hays, Rosie Pfeifer of Ellis, Therese Haas and Sandy Wilson both of Hays; a brother, Fidelis Engel Jr. of Munjor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Renee Mae Kuhn in 1967 and two sisters, Dorothy Mermis and Ruby Remy.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church 1805 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM with an Adoration Chapel Adorers rosary at 5:30 followed by a combined Daughters of Isabella rosary and parish vigil service at 6:00 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.  Visitation on Thursday will be 10:00 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church until the service begins.

Jacklyn Jean ‘Jackie’ Gabel

Jacklyn Gabel 001Jacklyn Jean “Jackie” Gabel, 57, Hays, went to be with Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior on July 11, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center.

She was born January 5, 1959, in Oberlin, Kansas, the daughter of Melvin and Darlene (Stephens) Petrasek.

She graduated from Hoxie High School and attended college at Fort Hays State University. She married Arlen Gabel in 1984. She worked as a ward secretary for thirteen years at Hadley Hospital, for four and a half years in the Urology office of Werth/McDonald, for three and a half years at the Ellis County Clerks office, and for thirteen years at the DeBakey Center at Hays Medical Center as a Health Coordinator. She was then diagnosed with liver cancer and after treatment was blessed with a liver transplant. For the next five years she took care of her five wonderful grandchildren.

She was a member of High Plains Baptist Church of Hays, deeply enjoyed decorating for every holiday and season, and loved sending her family and friends greeting cards for every occasion. She saw the best in everyone she met and anyone who knew her was blessed by her love and kindness.

She is survived by her husband, Arlen, of the home in Hays, her daughter Lindsay Leiker of Hays, her son Clayton Gabel of Hays, five grandchildren; Kali, Danika, Emersyn, Brantlee, and Ryder, three sisters; Conni Baker and husband Gary of Richmond, MO, Pam Bedore and husband Chris of Wamego, KS, and Beckie Best and husband Todd of Hoxie, KS, her father in law Wayne G. Gabel of Hays, brother in law Alan Gabel and wife Dawn of Shawnee, KS, sister in law Aggie McDonald and husband Don of Wentworth, MO, and many loved nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother in law Marie Gabel, grandparents William and Anna Petrasek, Levi and Blanche Stephens, Nick and Katie Gabel, and Celestine and Philomena Pfannenstiel.

A celebration of Jackie’s life will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the North Oak Community Church, 3000 Oak Street, Hays. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 10:00 am until service time on Thursday at the church.

Mary Lynn Hopper

Mrs. Hopper was born February 10, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Sylvester George and Muriel Fern (Murphy) Conrad. She was a resident of Pretty Prairie, Kansas, since 1977, moving from Hutchinson, Kansas. A 1963 graduate of McCracken High School, McCracken, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Kingman County Humane Society, Kingman, Kansas; the National Humane Society; the ASPCA; the Rush County Historical Society; and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

She married her first husband, Charles Hopper, they divorced. She then married her second husband, Johnnie Sharp. He preceded her in death September 28, 1998.

Survivors include: one son, Michael Hopper, and his significant other, Barbara Disney, Goodland, Kansas; one daughter, Diana Wheat, and her husband, Allen Mullen, Eugene, Oregon; one granddaughter, Iuliana Wheat, Eugene, Oregon; four brothers, Roy Conrad, and his wife, Phyllis Conrad, McCracken, Kansas, Wendell “Butch” Conrad, Goldthwaite, Texas, James “Jim” Conrad, and his wife, Martha Conrad, Holcomb, Missouri, and Paul “Richard” Conrad, and his wife, Linda Conrad, St. Louis, Missouri; nine nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be Friday, July 15, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas, with Pastor Bryan Parker officiating. Interment will be in the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas.

Kathaleen Kyle (Heskett) Kichty

Kathaleen Kyle (Heskett) Kichty of Hoxie, Kansas, was born 12 October 1944 on the Scott Homestead, Bow Creek Township, Sheridan County, Kansas and died July 11, 2017, at her home . She was the second daughter and fourth child of Rolland Matthew and Minnie LeNore (Miller) Heskett. She was one of the many babies delivered by E.F. Steichen of Lenora. She graduated from Bow Creek Rural Grade School and from Sheridan Community High School with the class of 1962.

After graduation, Kathaleen attended Brown-Mackie School of Business, Salina, KS; Vernon Regional College, Vernon, Texas; and the University of Hawaii. On 26 January 1963, at Schilling AFB Chapel, Salina, Kansas, she was united in marriage to Joseph William Kichty and to this union was born two sons, Craig Scott and Eric Joseph. Joseph and she were divorced 22 February 2007.

Kathaleen worked for Getz IGA; Atlantic Ice; Eberhardt’s News Agency; Miller’s Grocery; Boeing Corporation; State Farm Insurance; Computer Sciences Corporation; Evans Temporary Service; and Texas DOT. Most of her career she worked as an Executive Assistant.

She enjoyed history, writing, quilting, flower beading, and genealogy. Most of all she enjoyed traveling and living around the world in Salina, Kansas; Albany, Georgia; East Grand Forks, Minnesota; Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota; Wheeler AFB, Hawaii; Lockbourne AFB, Ohio; Yokota AFB, Japan; Sheppard AFB, Texas; Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Austin, Texas; Aurora, Colorado; Denver-Downham Market, Norfolk, England; and again in Aurora, Colorado. She “came home” to Sheridan County in December 2006, and since then has especially enjoyed traveling the back roads of America.

Kathaleen was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Rolland Elwyn Heskett, and her former husband, Joseph W. Kichty (CMSgt., Ret.).

Besides a very dear and special friend and companion, Charles A. Schwarz, she is survived by her two sons and their families: Craig and wife Amanda, and their children, Kendall Joseph, and Kaylee Sara-Elizabeth Kichtyof Houston, Texas; Eric Kichty of Austin, Texas, and his children , Evan Z. Kichty (Brittney) of Aurora , Colorado, Jordan K. Kichty of Puyallup, Washington and Holland E. Kichty of Logo Vista, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Lucinda Clark of Logo Vista, Texas; a sister, LeAnn (Edwin) Simon of rural Studley, Kansas; two brothers, Howard Heskett (Mary Lou) of Studley, Kansas, Darryl Heskett (Linda) of Morland, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Mary A. Kichty of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Diane Kichty of Washington.

Cremation has taken place. Private family services will take place at a later date.

Marilyn J. Speer

Marilyn J. Speer, age 81, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on September 7, 1934 in Saline County, Nebraska, the daughter of George Kenneth & Florence Marie Ridpath Butt. A resident of Scott City, Kansas until 1965 moving to Modoc, Kansas, she was a homemaker and a Registered Nurse.

Memberships include the First Christian Church, CWF and Eastern Star all of Scott City, Kansas.

On June 10, 1954 she married Charles A. Speer in Dighton, Kansas. He passed away on November 23, 2015 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Three Sons – Gaylon Speer of Overbrook, Kansas, Gary Speer of Scott City, Kansas, Gordon Speer of Jetmore, Kansas, One Daughter – Jeanne Spradling of Baldwin City, Kansas, One Brother – Kenneth Butts of Minneola, Kansas, Two Sisters – Karen Lynn Huskamp of Wichita, Kansas, Kaye L. Gruver of Wichita, Kansas, Thirteen Grandchildren, Twenty Great Grandchildren, One Great Great Grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Son In Law and One Grandson.

Albert Dean

He was born on October 9, 1917 in Rush County, Kansas, the son of William W. And Bessie Naomi Brewer Dean. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1932 moving from Rush County, Kansas, he was a Farmer.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church Scott City, Kansas. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII.

On September 20, 1941 he married Mary Alice Graham in Sharon Springs, Kansas. She passed away on November 1, 2008 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include his One Son – Lynn A. & Jeannie Dean of Idaho Falls, Idaho, One Daughter – Carol R. & Jerry Davey of Amarillo, Texas, One Brother – William G. Dean of Colorado Springs, Colorado, One Sister – Doris Whinery of Norman, Oklahoma, Five Grandsons, Ten Great Grandchildren and Seven Great Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife – Mary Alice, Two Brothers and Two Sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016 with the Rev. Kyle Evans presiding.

She was born on December 7, 1961 in Tribune, Kansas, the daughter of Francis and Violet Schenck Graham. She was a lifetime resident of Horace, Kansas and was the City Clerk of Horace in Horace, Kansas and worked for the Greeley County Republican in Tribune, Kansas for over 30 years as a printer.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary both in Tribune, Kansas.

Survivors Include her Significant Other – Jeff Slattery of Tribune, Kansas, One Son – Keith Slattery of Tribune, Kansas, Father – Francis Graham of Tribune, Kansas, Three Brothers – Lonnie Graham of Hays, Kansas, Larry Graham of Topeka, Kansas, Jerry Graham of Hays, Kansas, One Sister – Lesa Klozenbucher of LaCrosse, Kansas, Numerous Nieces & Nephews and Numerous Great Nieces & Great Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her Mother – Violet Graham, Three Brothers – Kenny Graham, Billy Graham, Terry Graham, and One Nephew – Marc Graham.
