Bruce B. ‘Buck’ Dannar

Bruce DannarBruce B. “Buck” Dannar, 51, Hays, died Monday, July 4, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born August 11, 1964 in Chadron, Nebraska the son of Bruce LeRoy and Sharon Rose (Alfred) Dannar.  On August 15, 2001 he married Lynette Watkinson in Chadron.

He was a Certified Welding Instructor and Educator teaching at Pine Ridge Job Corps, Montana State University, and Williston State College before becoming the welding instructor at North Central Kansas Technical College on the Hays Campus. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hays, the American Welding Society, loved blacksmithing and fireworks, and was an avid muzzleloader.

Survivors include his wife Lynette, of the home in Hays, his parents Bruce and Sharon Dannar of Chadron, Nebraska, a son Walker of Hays, two daughters Hanna and Harlee of Hays, five brothers; Seth Dannar and wife Andi of Basin, WY, Robert Dannar of Riverton, WY, Mark Dannar and wife Jodi of Chadron, NE, Zeb Dannar and wife Amanda of Clear Lake City, TX, and Josh Dannar and wife Suzie of Lovell, WY, two sisters; Tammy Kuykendall and husband Shawn of Casper, WY, and Heather Pittman and husband Chris of Casper, WY, father and mother in law; Charles and Sandy Watkinson of Eddyville, NE, and sister and brother in law; Loretta and Keith Anderson of Overton, NE, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Dannar.

Funeral services will be at 7:00 pm on Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2901 Canal Blvd.  Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Lexington, Nebraska on Saturday. Visitation will be from 5:30 pm until service time on Friday at the church.

Linda Rose Hrabe

image-225x300Linda Rose Hrabe, 68, Walker, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family July 2, 2016 in Wichita, KS after a long illness.

Linda was born on November 18, 1947 in Hays, KS the daughter of Clarence and Polly Hrabe.

She worked many years for Safeway grocery stores in Denver becoming the first female regional advertising and sales manager for the company. She then spent many years in Kansas City in sales and marketing for JC Nichols and residential management companies.

Linda enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her son, Padrick Caughlin, sister, Nena Tipton, and significant other, Mike Schauvliege, Walker, KS; granddaughter, Heather Caughlin and significant other, Ryan Nichols, Wilson, KS; niece, Leslie Nelson and husband, Allen and great nephew, Connor Nelson, Overland Park, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, new born son, Patrick and sister, Nancy Hrabe.

In lieu of flowers and a memorial service, contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Linda spent her life helping others and continues to do so by having her body donated to United Tissue Network.

Mary Margaret Purviance

Hays, Kansas – Mary Margaret Purviance, age 91, died Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born December 4, 1924, in Grass Valley, California to William Davey and Emma Clyde (Manwell) Hutchison. 

She married Warren Dorsey Purviance on August 5, 1945 in Marysville, California.  He died in 1996.
Mary was a elementary school teacher in California and retired in 1986. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and moved to Hays in 2009.

Survivors include one son, Rod Purviance and wife, Debra, Hays, KS; two granddaughters, Tara Nye and husband, Shane, North Carolina; Shannon Conroy and husband, Sean, Hays, KS; five great grandchildren, Andrew Purviance (Kelly); Brandon Wheeler; Camden Nye; Finley Conroy; Colin Conroy; and one great great granddaughter, Macie Chretien.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Family services will be next week in Yuba City, California and burial in Sierra View Memorial Park
Cemetery in Olivehurst, California.  Keithley Funeral Service, Inc./Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 is in charge of arrangements.

James W. Hoover

Phillipsburg resident James W. Hoover passed away Monday, July 4 at the Phillips County Hospital, Phillipsburg, at the age of 69.

He was born Feb. 7, 1947 in Manhattan, KS, the son of Kenneth & F. Elizabeth (Iles) Hoover.

Survivors include his daughter, Kelly Hoover of Phillipsburg; 2 sons, James II of Hutchinson & Michael of Greenville, SC; 3 brothers, Bob of Topeka, Tom of Manhattan & Mark of Minneapolis, KS; his sister, Penny Cochran of Manhattan; 4 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 8 at 2:30 p.m. in the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Wed & 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Frank Ervin Morgan

3759701_fbsFrank Ervin Morgan, age 68, passed away at Via Christi St. Frances Hospital, Wichita, Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

He was born November 20, 1947 in Hoxie, KS, the son of Ervin Albert and Lora Ellen Wooton Morgan.

He married Melody Ellis on August 8, 1970. They had three sons, Scott, Phillip, and Walter, all of Ness City.

Frank served in the United States Air Force from July 1966 to May 1970. He was a mechanic servicing C130 cargo planes. He served a year in Vietnam in The Ranch Hands.

He worked in the oil fields for over 40 years. He was a pulling unit operator for years, then went to water truck driving the rest of his years until he retired.

He is survived by his wife; sons; a very special niece that was like a daughter to him, Patty Barfield, Alton, KS; grandchildren, Craig, Mia, and Colten Morgan; three very special great nieces that called him grandpa; sister, Alta Ann (Larry) West, Longmont, CO; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan, Topeka, and Mary Morgan, OK; and lots of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Ed and Max Morgan.

Cremation has taken place as per the family wishes.

Graveside memorial service will be Thursday, July 7, 10:00 A.M. at the WaKeeney Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, KS.

Memorials contributions may be given to Heartland Cancer Center, Great Bend.

There will be a potluck lunch at the family house in Ness City after the graveside service.

Dale Lee Schwindt

Dale Lee Schwindt, age 73 died at his home in Alexander, Kansas on Sunday, July 3, 2016. He was born on June 18, 1943 in Ness City, Kansas the son of Harry and Dorothea Pratt Schwindt.

He is survived by his wife Gloria (Stremel) Schwindt of the home; two sons, Devin Schwindt and Michael Cairns; one daughter, Kerie Schwindt; one sister, Connie Rumold and her husband Bill; 7 grandchildern and 1 great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Amy Russell; two brothers, Herbert and Keith Schwindt; and a great grandson, Landon Stine.

Dale’s cremated remains will be inurned in the LaCrosse cemetery beside his father-in-law, Clifford J. Stremel.

Dale felt privileged the last months of his life to receive daily cards, phone calls and visits from many friends and family members. He was humbled greatly by their respect, love, and affection and considered these gifts to be his true memorial. Therefore, no additional service will be scheduled.

Irene Virginia Roth

3787541_fbsIrene Virginia Roth passed away June 30, 2016, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 94.

Irene was born in La Crosse, Kansas, November 12, 1921 to Henry John Wagner and Juliana Sabersch. She was the fourth of eight siblings Hilda, Esther, Oliver, Eldon, Johnny, La Donna and Richard.

The family moved from Lacrosse to Garden City, Kansas in 1924. There, Irene attended school, graduating from Garden City High school in 1939.

During WWII, an Army Air Force base was built in Garden City to teach basic flight training. There Irene found employment. Her job was to inspect and do maintenance on the propellers of the aircraft.
Following the war, Irene met Eugene Roth, a marine veteran. The two hit it off and drove to Kansas City where they were married on September 2, 1947. They settled on a farm north of Bazine, where they lived for many years prior to moving into town. In 1948, their daughter Cheryl was born, followed by Ron in 1952, Janice in 1954 and Ken in 1964.

Irene cooked for 10 years for the Bazine Public Schools. She enjoyed being a part of young people’s lives.

She was a lifelong member of the Bazine Seventh-day Adventist church, where she was the church pianist for nearly 50 years.

In 1997, Irene and Eugene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, son Ronald Roth, and daughter Cheryl Smith. Survivors include her brother, Richard (Billie) Wagner, Tulsa, OK, children, Janice (Jeff) Davis, Tulsa, OK, and Ken (Donna) Roth, Denver, CO, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, July 9, at the LaCrosse, Kansas Seventh-day Adventist church at 3 PM. Burial will follow at the Bazine Cemetery.

Viewing will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 6-8 P.M.

Rose Ann Rome

Rose Ann Rome, age 94, of Hays, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Hays Medical Center. She was born June 5, 1922 in Hoisington, Kansas to George and Margaret (McGovern) Elliott. She married Edwin “Eddie” Rome on September 20, 1948 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

She went to Sweeny Aircraft to learn a trade and became known as “Rosie the Riveter” at Walker Air Base and met her husband while working there. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Hays. Later in life she worked as a cashier at Weisner Grocery Store and as a custodian at Fort Hays State University and was the steward for the union while there.

She is survived by a son, John Rome; three daughters,Patricia Schindler, Margaret Durr and Mary Goodrow and husband Monty all of Hays; as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie; a son, Davis; two brothers, Pat and William Elliott; two sisters, Sarah and Susan Elliott and a newborn sister Margaret.

Growing up the children felt fortunate to have Mom at home. She always had special treats for them when they got home. When they played and made messes she never got mad. She was always a very happy person and the children feel blessed to have had two wonderful parents.

Funeral services will be 10 AM on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the St Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria.

Visitation will be Tuesday 5 PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and vigil service at 7 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS.

Memorial contributions are suggested to be used according to the wishes of the family to be designated at a later date.

Clarence Victor Schafer

Screen Shot 2016-07-02 at 3.06.59 PMClarence Victor Schafer, 84, of Ellis, Kansas went to be with our Lord on June 30, 2016. He passed away peacefully at his home. Clarence was born November 23, 1931 in Ellis to Edgar and Barbara (Weber) Schafer. Clarence graduated from Ellis High School in 1949.

Clarence joined the US Army in 1952 and was a prison guard at Fort Leavenworth. In 1960 he was granted honorable discharge. During this period of time he met and married the love of his life, Donna J Kunzweiler. They were married November 5, 1955 and celebrated 60 years of happiness and love. After his discharge from the US Army, he worked with his father in construction as a brick mason. In 1961, Clarence was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company of America, and retired in 1994 after 33 years of service.

Clarence was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis, and served in many capacities including head usher, president of church council, and church council member. He filled in for the pastor as needed to give Sunday sermons, and truly enjoyed this honor. He had always said his lifetime dream was to become a minister.

Clarence was truly a family man. A caring and loving husband, a wonderful “hero” of a father, and “fun” grandfather. Even though he put in long hours, he always took time to enjoy family moments. He enjoyed playing cards, Frisbee, badminton, bowling, golfing, fishing, gardening, dancing and playing the guitar and piano. His favorite hobby was wood working, his talent and creativity showed in the perfection of his projects. With pride, he attended all of the activities of his daughters and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, of the home, 3 daughters, Karen Bowen and husband David, Garden City, Kansas, Gayle Pfannenstiel and husband Mark, WaKeeney, Kansas, and Marian Lindberg and husband Glyn, Elllis, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis with burial to follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with Military Honors by the Ellis VFW Honor Guard.

Patricia Mai

Mai, Patty PicPatricia Mai was born December 2, 1926 to Frank J. and Blanche (Lindsay) DeJarnette, in Miami, Oklahoma.  She passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital.

As a young girl, Patty was baptized in the Christian Church faith.  She spent most of her young life in Baxter Springs, Kansas, and with her grandparents, George and Mattie DeJarnette in WaKeeney.  Patty was united in marriage to Emil Mai on June 20, 1946, in WaKeeney, and became a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in WaKeeney.  Emil passed away on November 23, 2003, after 56 years of marriage together.

She worked as a telephone operator, nurse’s aide, and physical therapist at Trego Lemke Hospital, and at WaKeeney Manor.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Daughters, Em Kro Knit, American Legion Auxiliary, Locust Club, and PEO Chapter CT.

Patty is survived by two grandsons, Bryce of Littleton, Colorado, and Darin of Greensborough, North Carolina; and six great-grandchildren, Elyssa, Jordyn, Madeline, Avry, Tristin, and Ryker Mai.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Sammy; and two sisters, Dolly and Polly.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney.  Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

There will be a visitation, with family present, for one hour prior to services at the church.

Marcia Lynne Van Conet

She was born February 2, 1954, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt Guliford, Jr. and Josephine D. Guliford.

Marcia was a longtime resident of South Hoisington. In 1972, she wed Booker T. Cartwright in Hoisington, Kansas. They lived in Russell for three years before returning to South Hoisington.

In 1990 she then wed George Anthony Van Conet. They lived in Alma, Nebraska for a short time, until moving back to Olmitz and later LaCrosse, Kansas. He died in 2003. Marcia has been a resident of Great Bend, Kansas, for the last sixteen years.

Marcia was a homemaker and a professional cosmetologist since 1981.

Marcia grew up in First Baptist Church of South Hoisington where she was the choir director and then in 2010 she became a member of the Myers Chapel, A.M.E., in Great Bend.

Survivors include; a sister, Karen Jo Guliford of Olathe, KS; sisters/aunts, Marilyn Overton and Theodora Singleton both of Kansas City, MO; her children, Dradeana K. Cartwright of Great Bend, KS, Brandon T. Cartwight and wife Mistee of Sterling, CO, Braylan T. Cartwright of Russell, KS, Barrian T. Cartwright of Oklahoma; and nine grandchildren, Kordyante Leum San-Teall , Remahliel Deanalon – Sakai, Adaighzion Pearl Junae, Jossie Arlene, Trennary Shai, Jalan Jsaiha Keysean, Kyona Lynne, Braxton, and Braddy Tre-Teagg; two nieces, Kya M.Gibbs and Homega K. Guliford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Sheryl June Guliford, Toi-San Guliford, Gayle F. Guliford–Locke.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 1, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Akiiki Daisy Kabagarama presiding.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery.

Marietta Ann Lichter

She was born November 30, 1937, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Leo P. and Anna (Schreiber) Ohnmacht. Marietta graduated from Otis Rural High School in 1955.

On August 31, 1955, she married Alvin E. Lichter at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, Kansas.

A lifetime Barton County resident, she worked for Fuller Brush, retiring after 36 years. Marietta was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church where she was active in the Altar Society. She was also a member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary of Great Bend.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Alvin E. Lichter; three children, Terry L. Lichter of Great Bend, Brenda A. Dreiling and husband Jerry of Pfeifer, KS, Lynn A. Lichter of Topeka, KS; a sister, Loretta Southard and husband Joe of Great Bend; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Linn and husband Harvey of Albert, KS, Mary Evelyn Linenberger of Great Bend; and six grandchildren, Andrew Lichter of Corpus Christi, TX, Erin Lichter of Lake Charles, LA, Brett Lichter of Topeka, KS, and Isaac, Noah, and Wyatt Dreiling all of Pfeifer, KS; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law, Kyle A. Lichter, a brother, Marion Ohnmacht and his wife Lillian, and brothers-in-law, John Raymond Lichter and his wife Christine, Joseph Marvin Lichter and his wife Irene, Henry Lichter, and Sylvester Linenberger.

Vigil with Altar Society Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2016, with Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m., Saturday, all at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz, celebrated by Fathers Anselm Eke and Ultan Murphy. Violet Louise Jamison Riffe

Violet Louise Jamison Riffe passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Wellington Health and Rehab in Wellington, Kansas at the age of 92.

She was born on July 7, 1923 in Los Angeles, California to the late Ruth (Betts) Ellis. Violet graduated from Webster High School with the Class of 1941 and went on to receive her teaching certificate at Fort Hays State College. She taught in rural schools in Rooks County, Kansas all the while continuing her education and receiving her BA. After that, she taught third grade for many years at Stockton Grade School in Stockton, Kansas.

On September 12, 1979 Violet was united in marriage to Elton Riffe in Golden, Colorado. They enjoyed many bus trips together before Elton passed away in 1997. Having a heart for serving others, she not only spent a lot of time volunteering, she even helped her mother milk cows on the farm after her step-father passed away. She worked many years at the Methodist Thrift Shop and Museum, and made sandwiches for the blood drives. She was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary, Red Hat Society, Eastern Star, Odd Fellows, Century Club, and Business Professional Women. In her younger years, she was very active in 4-H.

Violet is survived by her brother Richard Ellis and wife Carolyn of Mayfield; step-son Kenneth Riffe of Stockton; step-daughter Georgia Larson of Winfield; brother-in-law, Darrel Buss and wife Pat of Littleton, CO; nephews Travis Ellis and wife Desty of Springdale, AR, Bradley Buss of Lakewood, CO, and Jason Ellis and wife Carrie of Manhattan; and great-nieces and nephews, Kailyn Ellis, MaKensie Ellis, Rylie Ellis, Will Addair, and Andrew Kent.

She is preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Ruth Ellis; husband Elton Riffe; and sister Barbara Buss.

A funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton with Pastor Nick Talbott officiating. Burial will follow in the Stockton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00pm on Friday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6:00-8:00pm.
