Albertina Clara ‘Tina’ Rome

Albertina Clara “Tina” Rome, 82, Hays, died Friday, June 3, 2016 at her daughter’s house in Wichita.

She was born June 8, 1933 in Victoria, Kansas, the daughter of John and Catherine (Schmidtberger) Rupp. She worked in Housekeeping at Fort Hays State University until her retirement. 

She loved dogs, played harmonica by ear, and enjoyed playing solitaire. She was an excellent cook, preparing delicious German food for family and friends, and loved family time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her son; Lawrence Rome and wife Kathy of Hays, three daughters; MaryAnn Frank and Diane Janssen, both of Wichita, and Marie Davis and husband Eugene of Baltimore, MD, a sister Alice Wasinger of Hutchinson, five grandchildren; Joshua Rome of New York City, Nicole Rome of Columbus, OH, James Murrow and wife Kristin of Georgetown, KY, Lisa Murrow and Danny Cates of Wichita, and Abigail Davis of Baltimore, MD, four great grandchildren; Addison Murrow, Danielle Cates, Ava Cates, and Dagen Cates, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son; Clarence Rome, Jr., and eleven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, June 6, 2016 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Agnes D. Alexander

Agnes Alexander -Paper PictureHays, Kansas – Agnes D. Alexander, age 97, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born January 26, 1919, on the farm west of Victoria, Kansas, to John A. and Catherine Margaret  (Vonfeldt) Goetz. She married Earl Alexander on July 5, 1937. He died in 1976.   

She owned and operated the Towne Beauty Salon in Hays and was a hairdresser for over 55 years. She attended grade school\high school in Victoria and attended the Wichita Beauty School. Agnes was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and V.F.W. Post # 9076 all of Hays. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Agnes was devoted to her clients.

Survivors include one son, Dale Alexander and wife, Joyce, Aurora, CO; three grandchildren, Todd Alexander, Milissa Alexander, Toby Alexander and wife, Karen, all of Hays, former daughter-in-law, Michele Alexander, Hays, KS; four great grandchildren, Monica Alexander, Jacob Alexander, Shelby Alexander, Easton Alexander; and one great great grandson, Julius Alexander.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, Raymond Goetz and wife, Lioba;  Simon Goetz and wife, Ida; Dan Goetz and wife Josephine; Bill Goetz and wife, Helen; Dave Goetz and wife, Bonnie; three sisters, Sr. Verda Goetz C.S.A.; Tillie Brown and husband, Celly; Annie Sander and husband, Tony; two infant brothers, David Goetz and Hubert Goetz.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 8, 2016,  at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Kansas.  Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

Visitation is from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.

scanpic862Lou Ann Dietz, 81, WaKeeney passed away from this life June 1, 2016, at Trego Manor, WaKeeney. She was born November 3, 1934 in Great Bend to Samuel and Ella (Hergert) Giesick.

She married Omer J. Crossland on June 3, 1956 at Otis, KS. He died March 23, 1958. She married Emil Dietz on August 2, 1963 at Otis. He died September 9, 1990.

A Trego County resident since 1963 she was a registered nurse practicing for over 30 years.

Lou Ann was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney.

Survivors include two sons, Craig Crossland (Linda) of WaKeeney, and Mark Crossland of Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandsons Kyle Crossland (Katie) of WaKeeney, Casey Crossland (fiancé Samantha Augustine) of Wakeeney, and Cody Crossland (Leah) of Wakeeney; four great-grandchildren, Rylee, Kip, Addison, and Callan Crossland all of WaKeeney.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Samuel Giesick, Jr.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2016, at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney with Pastor Randy Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the funeral home in WaKeeney.

Dolores EiltsDolores Anne Eilts, 80, Hays, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at her home in Hays.

She was born November 13, 1935 in Russell, Kansas the daughter of Clarence E. and Nellie V. (Fry) Laizure.  On October 1, 1966 she married Ray Louis Eilts in Plainville, Kansas.  She graduated from Hays High School in 1953 and attended Fort Hays State University. She graduated from Brown Mackie College in Salina in 1978.  She was a legal secretary and then a free-lance certified court reporter (CSR). She was a member of the Kansas Court Reporters Association. 

She loved to garden and tend to her flowers, loved music and playing the oboe and piano, and she loved her dogs. She enjoyed reading, family gatherings, and she liked a good party.

Survivors include her husband, Hays, two sons; Mark R. Eilts and wife Chris of Hays and Keith E. Eilts and wife Renee of Hays, a daughter; Kathy J. Mitchell of Hays, two step sons; Leo D. Eilts and wife Rose of Kansas City, KS, and Roger L. Eilts and wife Deidre of Prairie Village, KS, a step daughter Rayleen B. Hufford and husband Dennis of San Antonio, TX, three sisters; Jeane Carole Smith and husband Don of Manhattan, Bette June Fiero of Niantic, CT, and Karen Louise Frydendall and husband Merrill of North Mankato, MN, thirteen grandchildren; David Mitchell and wife Amy of Orlando, FL, Kyle Eilts and wife Angela of Lee’s Summit, MO, Phillip L. Mitchell and wife Lauren of Lawrence, Natalie Moore and husband Jerry of Wichita, Elise Eilts-Blas and husband Drew of Topeka, Stephanie Brewster and husband Brandon of Olathe, Rachel Eilts-Bogert and husband Nate of Kansas City, MO, Mariah Messer and husband Pete of Minneapolis, MN, Aden Eilts and wife Joyce of Kansas City, KS, Jesse Hufford and wife Karyl of Ft. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Ruth Elaine Braly and Marjorie Mae Dreher, a brother Clarence James Laizure, and a son in law Gerald E. Mitchell.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Inurnment will be at 11:00 am on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday and from 10:00 am until service time on Saturday, all at the funeral home.

Victoria, Kansas – Doris Ann Westhusin, age 89, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at her home in Victoria.

She was born November 7, 1926, in Ellis, Kansas, to John and Anna (Gaschler) Erbert. She married Joseph F. Westhusin on November 12, 1946, in Ellis, Kansas. He died May 27, 1989.

She was an office manager of billings at St. Anthony Hospital-Hays Medical Center for 23 years and was a library volunteer at the Victoria Grade School for a number of years. She worked at the Plainville grocery store, the Plainville Hospital for a few years and lived in Plainville for 30 years before moving to Victoria, in 1979. In 2008 she received an appreciation plaque from the Kansas Association of Elementary Principals for her work at the Victoria Grade School. She was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and former church committee member all of Victoria. She served as an Eucharistic Minister for 25 years, a worker on the funeral dinner committee, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of the Fort Hays State University Foster Grandparent Program for over 18 years.

Doris was a very proud lady and enjoyed her community, friends and family.

Survivors include her son, Bruce Westhusin and wife, Stephany, Louisville, CO; one son-in-law, Norbert Kuhn, Hays, KS; one grandson, Taylor Westhusin, Bozeman, MT.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Michael L. Westhusin; one daughter, Rita Kuhn; one brother, Frank Erbert; and three sisters, Elizabeth Harrison, Viola Erbert, Caroline Niernberger.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 4, 2016, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery Plainville, Kansas.

A vigil service will be at 7:00 P.M. Friday, followed by a V.F.W. Auxiliary Memorial Service / Christian Mothers / Daughters of Isabella rosary at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Saturday all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis.

She was born on October 7, 1934 in Grigston, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Mildred Mae Payton Stewart. She was a homemaker and was a resident of Dighton, Kansas since 1953 moving from Scott City, Kansas.

She was a member of the Bible Fellowship Church and EHU both of Dighton, Kansas.

On February 20, 1953 she married Keith Eugene Wilson in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on May 16, 2007 in Dighton, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Eugene & Annette Wilson of Dighton, Kansas, Three Daughters – Renita & Albert Mesa of Garden City, Kansas, Sonia & Thomas Boyd of Garden City, Kansas, Asalea & Steve Boone of Dighton, Kansas, Four Brothers – Jimmy Stewart of Garden City, Kansas, Guy Stewart of Scott City, Kansas, Preston Stewart of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dean Stewart of Elkhart, Kansas, One Sister – Faye Ghan of Ulysses, Kansas, Nine Grandchildren and Fourteen Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Daughter – Keitha M. Schwartz and Son In Law – Darrel Schwartz, One Grandson – Ryon Sturgeon, Three Brothers – T.J. Stewart, Darrel Stewart and Robert Stewart, Two Sisters – Hazel Reinhart and Anna Hopkins.

Valerie C. VanLoenen

Valerie C. VanLoenen, 55 of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at her daughter Rachael’s home in LaCrosse, Kansas.

Valerie was born on March 21, 1961, in Grants, New Mexico, the daughter of Lyle and Opal (Anthony) Casper.  Later the family moved to Russell, Kansas, where Valerie spent most of her childhood and attended Russell schools.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Bryan VanLoenen on May 08, 1982 at the Methodist Church in Bogue, Kansas.  From this union Valerie and Bryan were blessed with 2 children Jonathan and Rachael.  She worked as a certified nurse’s assistant for over 20 years in Hill City and Russell.  She enjoyed attending the Methodist Church.  She also enjoyed taking care of people and helping them during their time of need.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her 3 granddaughters.

Surviving family include her father Lyle L. Casper of Russell; ex-husband Bryan VanLoenen of Bogue, Kansas; son Jonathan VanLoenen and daughter Rachael Burnah and husband Josh all of La Crosse, Kansas ; sister Deborah Clark and husband Gary of Russell; brothers Jackie L. Casper of Gorham, Kansas, Gary W. Casper and wife Bernice of Murray, Kentucky, Joel R. Casper and wife Michelle, Dale A. Casper and wife Jayne and David B. Casper all of Russell; granddaughters Adrianna, Brianna and Giavanna.

She was preceded in death by her mother Opal Casper and brother Lyle O. “Scooter” Casper.

A celebration of Valerie’s life will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, June 03, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, June 02, 2016, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Iva Gayle (Powell) Craig

Iva Gayle (Powell) Craig, daughter of Cyrus and Myrtle (Holler) Powell, was born May 6, 1921, in Norton, Kansas, and passed away peacefully at her home in Norton on May 30, 2016, at the age of 95.

Iva Gayle lived in Norton all of her life and graduated from the Norton Community High School. On February 8, 1940, Iva Gayle and George Craig were united in marriage in Phillipsburg, Kansas. They made their home in Norton where Iva Gayle was a retail clerk and also a housewife.

Iva Gayle was a member of the Church of God. Her greatest love was her family, especially her children and all of her grandchildren.

Survivors include: three sons, David Craig, Norton; Richard Craig, Tonganoxie, Kansas; Dale Craig, Lafayette, Louisiana; one daughter, Georgia Wyatt, Hays, Kansas; 27 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several other relatives and friends.

Iva Gayle was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George, three brothers, two sisters, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
