James Ira Troutner

He was born January 3, 2003 in Emporia, KS, the son of Roger W. and Deanna L. (Shearer) Troutner. He was a student at Norton Junior High School, Norton, KS.

James was preceded in death by his father Roger Troutner on October 30, 2013, maternal grandfather, Arnold Shearer and paternal grandparents Dallas Ira and Vivian Troutner.

He is survived by his mother Deanna Troutner of Eskridge; brother, Jordan Troutner of Eskridge; sister, Lora Troutner of Eskridge; grandmother, Elaine Shearer of Almena; boyfriend of Deanna, Allan Babcock and daughter Tiffany of Logan and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2016 at the Norton Christian Church, 208 N. Kansas Ave., Norton, KS, with Pastor Hal Jones and Chance McKinney officiating. Public visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2016 and 8:00 a.m. until service time Friday, June 3rd all at the Norton Christian Church. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Almena, KS. A memorial service for James will also be held in Emporia, KS at a later date and will be announced.

Memorials may be given to the James Ira Troutner Memorial Fund and can be sent in care of All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, KS 66967.

Rosie F. Peschka

Thumbnail-1Rosie F. Peschka, 92, passed away May 27, 2016 at Heartland Haven in Inman.

Born January 12, 1924 in Barton County, she was the daughter of Frank and Mary T. (Schreiber) Pelz. She grew up in rural Barton County and attended country grade school then graduated from Hoisington High School. She moved to her farmstead south of Wilson in 1951. In her later years, Rosie was a dedicated employee of Eschbaugh Advertising in Wilson.

She was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Altar Society in Wilson. Rosie’s life was about her family. She was the caretaker and peacemaker of her sisters, children, and grandchildren. Although she wore many hats, farm woman, mom, and grandma were the ones which brought her the most joy.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons; Michael (Karen) Peschka of Wilson, Randall (Nancy) Peschka of Ellsworth, daughters; Linda Nowlin (Al Slechten) of Burleson, TX, Karen Peschka (Bea Gotschall) of Geneseo, KS, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a sister Kathryn Mater. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Eleanor Riedl and Shirley Pelz.

Memorials are suggested to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or Wilson Senior Center, in care of the funeral home.

Carl Wilson Nonamaker

Front-folder-600x937OSBORNE, KS – Carl Wilson Nonamaker, the only son of Wilson and Clista (McCormick) Nonamaker, was born on a farm five miles southwest of Cedar, Kan., on September 28, 1919.  He died at the age of 96 at Parkview Care Center, Osborne, Kan., on May 24, 2016.

In 1920, Carl’s family moved a mile west, onto their own 320 acres that they built a farm and home on.  Carl’s primary education was received a mile north of home, at Pleasant View, District #72.  In 1937 he graduated from Cedar Rural High School.  The next three years he worked the farm with his dad in the summers and held jobs through the winters.

Carl registered for the draft on Oct. 16, 1940 and was with the first group of men that left Smith County on Ground Hog Day, 1941.  Army training began with the 127th Field Artillery, which later became the 195th Field Artillery Battalion.  In Feb. 1944, Carl left America for England and on June 15, 1944, the 195th became the first heavy artillery battalion to land on Utah Beach in France.  The 195th served in five major battles in the European Theater before Carl, a Staff Sgt. in HQ Battery, was honorably discharged on Oct. 21, 1945.

Carl married Laura Williams of Alton, Kan., at the Rooks County Courthouse on August 27, 1948.  For the next 44 years they farmed side by side while raising six children on the Cronn 80, the farm located next to Carl’s parents, which he bought while serving in Germany.

After Laura’s death he remained working on his beloved farm until failing health required a move to Parkview Care Center in January 2008.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, son Arden in 1984, wife Laura in 1993, and his three sisters, Velma Draper, Letha Nedrow and Frieda Hagman Campbell.  He is survived by daughters Sheila (Kenton) Krehbiel, Colby; Deanna (Stan) Roach, Alton; Carla (Van) Dettmer, Agra; sons Thane of Gardner; Gary (Amber), Cedar; 13 grandchildren (Sharon, Theresa, Sherrie, Brenda, Rachel, Jason, Amanda, Amber, Keith, Russell, Renee, Kaitlin and Melissa), 17 great-grandchildren (with one on the way); several nieces and nephews and brother-in-law Bill (Carolyn) Williams, Alton.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening May 30, 2016 from 5PM until 7PM at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00AM Tuesday May 31, 2016 at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center.

Burial will follow in the Cedar Cemetery with military honors.

The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be given to the Bull City Community Foundation in Alton and/or the Cedar Cemetery Fund and can be sent in care of the mortuary.

Velma E. Munyon

3734008Phillipsburg resident Velma E. Munyon passed away Friday, May 27, 2016 at the Phillips County Retirement Center, Phillipsburg, at the age of 97. She was born October 18, 1918 in Phillips County, the daughter of Ralph & Mary (Schmid) Fouts.

Survivors include her sister, Kathyrn Matteson of Pocatello, ID and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wed. June 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra.

Visitation will be from 12:00 to 9:00 Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church or Hospice Services.

Helen L. Rice

2016-05-26_12-52-43-AM_PHelen L. Rice, age 100 years, 2 months and 10 days, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Smith Center Health and Rehab, Smith Center, KS.

She was born March 14, 1916 South of Cedar, Kansas, the daughter of Isaac William and Etta May (Martin) Eller.  She married William F. Rice on March 26, 1939 in Mankato, KS, by Rev. Rassie Conrad who was an uncle to the bride.  To this union they were blessed with four sons, Kelly, Douglas, Stanley and Sidney.

Helen was a homemaker for most her life and fulltime mom raising her four sons but in 1963 she went to beauty school in Salina, KS and at the time she and her family lived there until she graduated.  After graduation Helen and her family moved to Gaylord, KS and purchased a home, they then made a Beauty Shop for Helen in the basement of the house for her to work out of.   Helen had a successful career as a beautician in Gaylord, KS, she opened her business on April 30, 1964 and retired on December 14, 1997.  She worked for over 33 years and was 81 years old at the time she retired due to health reasons.

In June of 2004 she moved to Western Plains Village in Smith Center, KS, in June 2012 she moved to Smith Center Health and Rehab and lived her remaining 4 years of her life there.

Helen was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Gaylord, KS.  She attended faithfully until her health prevented her from doing so.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Bill on November 13, 1969, her parents, two brothers, Ross and Clyde Eller and two sisters, Furn Hamilton and Marple Cole.

She is survived by her four sons, Kelly (Joan) Rice of Emmett, ID, Doug (Connie) Rice of Smith Center, Stanley (Nanette) Rice of Lakin, Sid (Phyllis) Rice of Torrington, WY; eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center, with Pastors Brian Loreg and Keith Sears officiating.  Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2016 with family present to greet friends from 6-7 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral chapel.  Burial will be in the Gaylord Cemetery, Gaylord, KS.  Memorials may be given to Gaylord Church of the Nazarene and/or Hospice Services of Smith County, KS.

Edith L. Donecker

She was born on May 29, 1926 in Gove County, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas G. and Mary E. Coe Russell. She was a homemaker and a school cook for over 20 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Healy and Scott City, Kansas. A past member of the EHU and a 4H Leader.

On December 24, 1943 she married Dale A. Donecker in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on January 27, 2002 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Three Sons – Terry & Bonnie Donecker of Healy, Kansas, Jim & Cheryl Donecker of Wichita, Kansas, David & Grace Donecker of Garden City, Kansas, Three Daughters – Sue & Brent Rogers of Scott City, Kansas, Jana & Paul Bailey of Ark City, Kansas, Tammy & Mike Kniffin of Wichita, Kansas, Twenty One Grandchildren, Thirty Seven Great Grandchildren and Six Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Grandson, Two Brothers and Six Sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at the Healy United Methodist Church of Healy, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016 with the Rev. Bud Tuxhorn presiding.

Interment will be in the Healy Cemetery in Healy, Kansas.

Edna Schulte

She was born April 8, 1929, in Hays, Kansas, to Joseph and Frances (Kepka) Dauber. She married Elmer M. Schulte on November 20, 1950 at Russell. He died June 24, 1991.

She was a homemaker, farmer’s wife and a Tupperware dealer for many years. She was a 1947 graduate of Bunker Hill High School and attended Fort Hays Kansas State College for one year and was a teacher at the Cedar Creek School in rural Bunker Hill. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Christian Mothers both of Walker, a member of the Victoria Daughters of Isabella and served on the Ellis County Election Board for over 20 years. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, quilting and in her early years she was active in the 4-H.

Survivors include one son, Matthew Schulte and wife, Anne, Hays, KS; five daughters, Jane Goodheart and husband, Mark, Bison, KS; Mary Jo Rome and husband, Mark, Victoria, KS; Diane Gottschalk and husband, Ken, Laure Gross and husband, Kraig, Annette Wooldridge and husband, Brian, all of Hays, KS; two sisters, Josephine Schulte, Hays, KS; Rosanna Gleason and husband, James, Kinsley, KS; 18 grandchildren; Jolene Peterson (Josh), Kristin Schurr (Craig), Leann Dalton (Kevin), Scott Goodheart (Carrie), Megan Goodheart and fiancé (B.J. Beiker), Aaron Rome (Shana), Andra Cunningham (Preston), Jason Rome (Jeanie), Garret Rome, Kara Denton (Shawn), Derick Gross (Colleen), Jenna Schulte, Michael Schulte, Emily Schulte, Ryan Wooldridge, Tyler Wooldridge, Amber Wooldridge, Brianna Wooldridge, two step grandchildren, Amy Casper (Scott) and Mark Gottschalk; 13 great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

Russell, Kansas – Ronald J. Waldschmidt, age 70, died Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at the Russell Regional Hospital, Russell, Kansas.

He was born November 1, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Rudolph and Agnes (Fisher) Waldschmidt. He married Diana Marie (Rome) on May 14, 1966, at Victoria, Kansas. She died December 13, 2015.

He worked 10 years at the Russell Safeway Food Store as a produce manager and retied in 2005 after 30 years with the Russell County Highway Department. Ron was member of St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church, a honorary lifetime member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and has lived in Russell since 1967. He enjoyed sports, polka dances, TV wrestling and in his earlier years he enjoyed bowling and fishing.

Survivors include his daughter, Amy Jenkins and husband Ron, Kansas City, MO; father-in-law, Wilmer Rome, Hays, KS; three brothers, John Waldschmidt and wife, Linda, Victoria, KS; Charles Waldschmidt and wife, Verlene, Peter Waldschmidt and wife, Sandy, both of Ellis, KS; seven sisters, Connie Fink and husband, Ernie, Viola Fischer, Judy Herman and Jack Carver, Paula Befort and husband, Howard, Debbie Herman and husband, Randy, all of Ellis, KS; Phyllis Richards and husband, John, WaKeeney, KS; Deidria Dolny and husband, Bruce, Shawnee, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Richard Waldschmidt and mother-in-law, Valeria Rome.

Services are at 11:00 A.M. Monday, June 6, 2016, at St. Mary’s Queen of Angles Catholic Church, Russell, Kansas. Inurnment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery Walker, Kansas.

Carl Lee Harris

He is survived by his three brothers, Donald (Ivey) Harris – Leavenworth, Kansas, Arlyn (Nancy) Harris, Jenks, Oklahoma, Gail (Kaye) Harris, Ness City, Kansas; two sisters, Bertha Shannon, Liberty, Missouri and Carol (Larry) Halsey, Loveland, Colorado; sister-in-law, Carol Harris, Scottsdale, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Merle Harris and brother-In Law, Jim Shannon.

Michael J. ‘Mike’ Garrison

Michael J GarrisonMichael J. “Mike” Garrison, 35, Hays, died Friday, May 20, 2016 in Costa Rica.

He was born January 2, 1981 in Ness City, Kansas the son of Bob and Denise (Hoss) Garrison. He was a graduate of TMP-Marian High School in 1999 and attended Fort Hays State University.

For many years, he worked in various capacities in the oilfield, leaving in 2015 as a logging engineer. Recently he was a truck driver for Wiseman Farms. On September 24, 2011, he married Melisa Obholz in Hays. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing softball, NASCAR, and was an avid Kansas City Royals baseball fan. He loved family time and spending time with his children.

Survivors include his wife Melisa, of the home, his mother Denise Garrison and fiancé Jerol DeBoer of Hays, three sons; Payton, Dawson, and Brennon Garrison of Hays, two daughters; Maci and Makayla Garrison of Hays, his sister Krista Dechant and husband Jason of Hays, grandparents Darrell and Marvalee Garrison of Ness City, Kansas, father and mother in law; Joe and Barbara Obholz of Hays, brother in law Joe Obholz, Jr. of Overland Park, KS, three sisters in law; Tammy Slater and husband Clint of Overland Park, KS, Amy Becker and husband Brett of Hays, and Susie Obholz and fiancé Trevor Engel of Hays, his Godson Braxton Fritzler of Hays, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Garrison in 2003, and by his grandparents Bernard Hoss, Dorothy Hoss, and Tena Hoss.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 Tuesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home.

Eugene Milton Reinhardt

Screen Shot 2016-05-27 at 7.45.19 AMEugene Milton Reinhardt, age 90, of Sun City, Arizona died suddenly February 1, 2016 at Boswell Hospital from an apparent intestinal rupture. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born in rural Russell County, Kansas to Milton and Rose Karst Reinhardt. His sister Rose Lee Reinhardt Frazier Carter preceded him in death. He attended Three Corners School and graduated from Russell High School in 1944. Because of his father’s adventuring spirit, Gene began piloting airplanes at age 12 and became the Kansas State Junior Champion Trap Shooter at age 14. In high school, he was an outstanding athlete lettering in track, football, basketball and baseball. All his life he was passionate about team sports, bird hunting, fishing and golf.

Even before high school graduation, Gene enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was proud to be part of an air-sea rescue unit stationed in Saipan. After returning from WWII, he attended Kansas University. He experienced the frustrations of farming in Logan County, western Kansas. In 1947, he married Faye Uhland Hellener of Larned, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with two daughters—Cynthia Bolinger, (husband Dave) of Warsaw, MO and Kim BaxaRumburg (husband Larry) of Ulysses, KS.

In the mid-1950’s, with the encouragement of Dick Shields, Eugene foundedReinhardt Services, an oil well service company. He and his crews worked from four stations until his retirement in 1985.

Gene and Barbara Hufft Spacil of Ellinwood, Kansas were married in 1972. This marriage brought into his life three children—Steven Spacil (wife Cathleen) of South Weber, UT; Michael Spacil of Auburn, Kansas and Melanie Weinhold Rehmert (husband Tony) of Dodge City, Kansas.

Gene was a Shrine member of the Salina, Kansas temple, member of the Elks Club and the VFW. He and Barbara retired to Sun City, Arizona where they have enjoyed an active social life and where Gene continued golfing even into the last week of his life usually besting players much younger than himself. Gene had a youthful zest for life. He brought donuts to the girls at the pharmacy, challenged the men at the golf course, loved and encouraged his children, was steadfast in his friendships and was inspired by his beautiful and loving wife Barbara. He is greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife Barbara of the home, his five children, grandchildren Ryan Bolinger of Roseville, MN; Clayton Bolinger of Shawnee, KS; Julie BaxaFawdington of Cyprus, TX; Matt Baxa of Canyon, TX; Savannah Spacil and Mandy Heath of South Weber, UT; Ross Spacil of Phoenix, AZ; Brian Spacil of Wichita, KS; and Rachael Weinhold Nunez of Phoenix, AZ and 15 great grandchildren.

A celebration of Eugene’s life will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, June 4th at the Dole-Specter Conference Room at the Fossil Creek Inn in Russell, Kansas. Military Rites will be performed by the Russell V.F.W. #6240. A private interment in the Russell City Cemetery will take place before the celebration. Memorials may be given to the Shriners Hospital for Children or Pitty Paws Bully Rescue of Phoenix and mailed to: Royal Oaks, 9915 Royal Oak Road #1062, Sun City, AZ 85351. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the memorial services.

Della Rosa Johnston

She was born in the Rooks County Township south of Logan on January 10, 1922 to Massie and Mae McCue. Della shared her youth with 2 sisters and 1 brother growing up during the Great Depression on a farm south of Logan, Kansas.

Della met and married a neighbor boy, Gerald Johnston, on June 20, 1943. Della lived and worked with Gerald farming south of Logan. They farmed until 1968 when they moved to Stockton, Kansas. While in Stockton, she cared for the children of many working parents and made many friends. She did the same while living in Hays when she was in her 80’s. She moved to Topeka in 2013.

Della enjoyed being busy raising the family and was an accomplished cook, everyone enjoyed her meals.

Della was a member of the Christian Church in Stockton for many years.

Della is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Gerald. She is survived by her son, Roger (Beverly); daughter, Linda Benson; son, Bruce (Sally) and son, Rick (Teri); 6 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Della is also survived by her sister, Blanche Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 27th at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave. in Topeka. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment will be in Stockton, Kansas at a later date. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
