Henrietta ‘Henri’ Baker

Henri was born April 10, 1927 in Schoenchen, Kansas, the daughter of John & Josephine (Werth) Graff. A lifetime resident of Wichita County, Kansas, she was a farm wife, homemaker and loved gardening.

Henri was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas as well as St. Mary Alter Society and the Daughters of Isabella.

On November 3, 1954 she married Herman F. Baker at Marienthal, Kansas. Herman passed away on March 4, 1989 in Scott City, Kansas.

Jesse L. Mishler

Screen Shot 2016-05-24 at 8.01.50 AMJesse L. Mishler, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Greeley County Hospital Long Term Care in Tribune, Kansas. He was born on July 16, 1928 in the original Kaw City, Oklahoma which is now where Kaw Lake is located, the son of Lee and Daisy Rogers Mishler. A resident of Tribune, Kansas since 1945, graduating from Greeley County High School in 1947. He was a mechanic.

He was a member of the VFW Post #7521 in Tribune, Kansas and was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.

On January 7, 1954 he married Arlene Iris McMinimy in Tribune, Kansas. She passed away on August 15, 2015 in Tribune, Kansas.

Survivors include his Two Sons – Leslie & Pati Mishler of Lewis, Kansas, Mike & Diana Mishler of Tribune, Kansas, Three Daughters – Debra & John Crayne of Grand Island, Nebraska, Roxie & John Dase of Pueblo, Colorado, Cheryl & Lance Buckman of Sterling, Kansas, Nine Grandchildren and Seven Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife – Arlene, Three Sisters – Mary Stetz, Daisy Marselus, and Wilma Armer.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. (M.T.) Saturday, May 28, 2016 with Jeri Smith presiding.

Interment will be in the Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas.

The Rev. Elton ‘John’ Lee Hunter

Screen Shot 2016-05-23 at 4.05.53 PMThe Rev. Elton “John” Lee Hunter, a longtime resident of Stockton, KS, age 82, went to be with his Lord on May 21, 2016. Elton was born to David and Celia “Dickey” (Burton) Hunter on November 13, 1933 in Rooks County, KS. He grew up on the family farm 6.5 miles west of Stockton on Old Highway 24. He started school at Webster through the 6th grade. He finished his education in Stockton, graduating from high school in 1951.

Elton joined his father farming, but also had jobs off the farm: garage mechanic, roustabout for oil man, mechanic at Ostmeyer, and the Rooks County Highway Department as a road maintainer. A certain gal caught his eye, and he married Lola Taylor on July 24, 1955 at Glen Elder, KS at the Methodist Church.

Elton and Lola raised 3 children on the farm until June 1976. Elton had changed his job occupation to lay pastor and had been assigned to a 3 church parish located north of Smith Center, KS. He served the Reamsville, Thornburg, Womer United Methodist Churches while completing his theology studies with Perkins School of Theology. After completing these studies he was ordained a Deacon of the United Methodist Church on May 25, 1982. Following this there were 3 more moves: Republic and Webber; Attica; and Protection, KS United Methodist Churches. He retired from the ministry in 1999, returning to farming on the family farm.

In 2002, Elton returned to the ministry as part-time pastor for Rose Valley United Methodist Church. For the next 8 years, Elton and Lola spent their weekends at Rose Valley parsonage and during the week on the family farm outside of Stockton.

Around April 2013, Elton and Lola moved to Stockton after selling the farm.

Survivors include: his wife, Lola; children Diane Hiebert (Dallas) of Rozel, KS, Vicki Strausberg of Wichita, KS, and Dwight Hunter (Gina) of Chattanooga, TN; and grandchildren David Hunter, Amy Hiebert, Dani Hunter, and Duane Hiebert.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Duane and Max Hunter; and sister Mavis Rabourn.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Stockton with burial following at the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. John Marion Mindrup

John Marion Mindrup, 53, died Monday (May 16, 2016) in Newton, Ks.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the church gymnasium. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m., both at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Almelo, Ks.

John was born June 16, 1962 in Norton County, and grew up on the farmstead of the Mindrup family. John attended grade and high school at New Almelo and Lenora. During his high school years, he participated in sports, especially enjoying football. John attended Goodland Vo Tech and worked in construction, custom harvesting, and manufacturing jobs.

John had a gentleness and goodness about him. He never had desire for luxuries and led a very simple lifestyle with little money; yet he would give away his last dollar to another in need. He continued to love to watch football through his life, and especially enjoyed the past two years’ run of KC Royals baseball. John also loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews.

John is survived by siblings Elizabeth Jansonius and her husband Phil and son Timothy of Prairie View, KS; Margaret Houtz and her husband Brett and children Katie and Josh of Ozawkie, Kansas; and Joseph Mindrup and his wife Meg and their children James, Annie, Matt and Joey of Hays, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Rachel and his sister Maureen.

We all mourn his passing and take solace in knowing that now he is at perfect peace and love in the arms of Our Lord Jesus, and reunited with his loving parents. John was a good man and his journey through life was difficult due to suffering from illness for many years.

Dylan Ray Weiser

Dylan was born February 20, 1994, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Todd Scott and Kristi Renee (House) Weiser. He was a resident of Thornton, Colorado, for 1 ½ years, moving there from La Crosse, Kansas. A 2012 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he worked at Greg’s Sport Pub & Grub in Rush Center, Kansas, for four years while in high school. After graduation, he worked for three years at Al’s Chickenette in Hays, Kansas, until he moved to Colorado.

Survivors include: his mother and step father, Kristi and Tom Ferch; and his two brothers, Scott Lee Weiser, Hays, Kansas, and Bryan Steven Weiser, Hays, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Todd Scott Weiser (November 27, 2007); and his maternal grandparents, Clarence “Bud” and Patricia House.

A celebration of Dylan’s life will be conducted by his family Saturday, May 28, 2016, at 2:00 P.M. at the La Crosse City Auditorium, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Micah Sanderson officiating.

Wayne Charles Haver

He was born December 12, 1948 in Kingston, NY to Joseph and Florence (Croswall) Haver. He was a 1967 graduate of Onteora High School in Boiceville, NY. He married Vera Dinkel on May 1, 1971.

His working career consisted of service in the U.S. Army where he retired after 25 years with the rank of Captain. He was also the owner of H & H Sentimentals antique shop. Wayne was a great handyman and was always willing to try his hand at anything that was put before him. When not installing garage doors or fixing a porch roof, Wayne spent time working at Fischer Liquor Store where he enjoyed visiting with people. He currently worked at Golden Belt Coop.

Wayne loved his community and has served on the Ellis City Council and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the Ellis Housing Authority Board.

He is survived by his wife, Vera Haver of Ellis; a son, Craig Haver (Bridget) of Black River Fall, WI; a daughter, Anne Haver of Ellis; three sisters, Betty Ann Miller of New York; Darlene Johnson of Georgia; and Kathy Taylor of North Carolina; six grandchildren, Megan Haver, Alex & Ali Haver, Josh & Aiden Johnson, and Charli Arnold.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Gregg.

Memorial services will be 10:30 AM Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Kansas State Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney.

Visitation will be Sunday 6 PM – 8 PM at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Genevieve ‘Gen’ Jacobs

Genevieve Jacobs- Paper PictureGorham, Kansas – Genevieve “Gen” Jacobs, age 96, died Friday, May 20, 2016, at the Main Street Manor in the Russell Regional Hospital, Russell, Kansas.

She was born January 9, 1920, in Hays, Kansas to Joseph and Anna (Baumrucker) Jacobs.

She was employed at the Gorham Post Office for 35 years and eventually was named Post Mistress until her retirement in 1985. She was a civilian employee at the Walker Army Air Base and also worked at the Gorham State Bank from 1960 to 1970. She was a 1940 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Gorham, Kansas and lived her lifetime on the farm south of Gorham until 2011 when she moved to the Main Street Manor.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella both of Gorham, Kansas, and Russell V.F.W. Auxiliary When Gen was a younger woman, her Mother advised her that if she wished to travel, she should not marry. Gen loved to travel and visited Europe, Africa and China and many areas of North America. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, sewing, painting, cooking and was very strong in her catholic faith.

Survivors include her brother, Berno Jacobs, Main Street Manor, Russell, KS; eight nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Jacobs and wife Anna; one sister, Lucille Anderson and husband, Louis.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Gorham, Kansas. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gorham, Kansas.

Olyn Danford (O.D.) Calhoon Jr.

Olyn Danford (O.D.) Calhoon Jr., 80, formerly of Colby, Kansas, died on Monday, May 2, 2016, in Logan, KS. from melanoma.

O.D. was born on October 27, 1935, in Osborne, KS. to Olyn Danford Calhoon,Sr. and Nina Mae Eshbaugh Calhoon. As a child, he and his sister Carol Kay Calhoon Brooks spent time fishing, hunting, playing outside, and visiting relatives nearby. He spoke fondly of his time with his aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents in the Manhattan area at frequent family reunions.

O.D. attended Colby High School where he played football and track, and he held the record in the 100 yard dash for many years. After he graduated in 1953, he joined the Army National Guard. On January 22, 1954, O.D. married his high school sweetheart, Carmelita Maxine Grady, at the First United Methodist Church of Colby. Together they went to college at Kansas State University where he also held the 50-yard dash record for many years. He worked as a land surveyor, at Western Well and Pump, as a farmer and as a salesman for Pioneer Seed.
O.D. lived most of his life in Colby, where he had many friends who he greeted with, “Hey, guy.”

He was usually telling jokes while enjoying a cup of coffee and always whistling while on the go (often to the doughnut shop). He spent Saturday nights at the country club with his good friends. He enjoyed singing, playing cards, woodworking, fishing, and attending class reunions. With Carmelita, he rarely missed one of his daughter’s events or activities, and the Calhoon household is well-remembered as the spot for high school and CCC gatherings. He spent many happy times tickling his grandchildren and closely followed the activities of his family. The couple were great supporters of the Prairie Museum of Art and History and Pickin’ on the Plains.
After Carmelita’s passing in 2003, O.D. married Joann Seeberger, who survives him, and the couple lived in Colby, Lindsborg, and Norton. He enjoyed spending time with Joann’s extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents (O.D.,Sr. and Nina Calhoon), first wife, Carmelita Calhoon, and brother-in-law, Charles W. Brooks. He is survived by his sister, Carol Brooks, Winter Garden, Fl; daughters, Catherine Desautels, Carbondale, CO, Crystal Nuss (Jason), St. Francis, WI, and Kelley VanHorn (Thurston), Woodbridge, VA; niece, Kimberly Brooks Blaylock (Rick) and nephew, Kerry W. Brooks (Tina); grandchildren, Lucas Labaw (Kim), Jennifer Labaw (Marcus), Kara Nuss (Mark), Ellen Price (Brock), Amanda Brown (Shaun), Melanie Dawson (Bryan), Danielle Godfrey (Eric); great-grandchildren Hudson and Grady LaBaw, Jamie Dollard, Madison Brown, Ella and Jake Dawson; and great nieces and nephews Charles D.Brooks, Corie Brooks, Michael and Brandon Brooks, and Dustin and Bailee Blaylock.

O.D.’s remains were cremated through Kersenbrock Funeral Chapel in Colby, Ks. and will be buried at a future private family celebration. Memorials may be sent to the Thomas County Historical Society or to the American Melanoma Foundation

John Bruce Brown

John Bruce Brown, 72, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, May 16, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas.

John was born at the family home on July 14, 1943 in Quenemo, Kansas, the son of Orlin and Iva (Watkins) Brown. He grew up and attended school in Ellinwood and Great Bend, Kansas.

John served his country in the Army Reserves for 26 years and where he had the rank of Staff Sergeant.

John lived in the Russell, Kansas area from 1972 to 1996. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Sandra K. Nuss on February 16, 1965, in Great Bend, Kansas. From this union John and Sandra were blessed with 2 daughters Melodie and Misty. Later, unfortunately John and Sandra divorced in 1987. During that time he was the general manager for Russell Tire. Then in 1996 he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked for Old Mission Cemetery as a laborer. He retired in 2005 and returned to the Russell area. He was a member of National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating with his family.

Surviving family include his ex-wife Sandra Brown and his two daughters, Melodie Anschutz (Derrick) of Russell, Kansas and Misty Brown (Michael Werth) of Russell, Kansas; and two grandchildren, David Brown and Jordan Werth. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice Nightengale, and two brothers James Brown and Walter Brown.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 23, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. No visitation will be held, cremation has preceded the services. Family will greet guests the day of the service. Memorials may be given to the John B. Brown Memorial Fund and sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, who is in charge of these arrangements.
