Sandra F. LaCoy, age 50, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on June 5, 1965 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Melvin L. and Evelyn Berning Stegman. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1999 moving from Marienthal, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Scott City Quilt Guild both of Scott City, Kansas.

On August 9, 1991 she married John LaCoy, Jr. In Olathe, Kansas. He survives.

Patricia A. Starbuck

Patricia A. Starbuck, age 78, died Friday, April 29, 2016, at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas.

She was born March 10, 1938, in Hays to Kenneth Sturgeon and Amelia Leiker.

She was a medical laboratory technician for 16 years and worked at Travenol Labs. for 17 years.  She attended Wichita Business College, Fort Hays State University and received a Associate Degree in Applied Science from Barton County Community College.

She played saxophone and clarinet with The Eddie Frank Orchestra and The Vicky Star Quintet for 26 years.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and the American Society of Clinical Pathology.  She was a charter member of the American Federation of Professional Musicians’ Club.

Survivors include cousins and a host of friends.  She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, George Starbuck.

A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd St.   A private inurnment will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

A gathering of friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Norton resident, Mark C. Whitney, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 65.

He was born July 30, 1950 in Omaha, NE. He was welcomed into the home of Joan and Eddie Whitney at the age of three.

He is survived by his wife Torre of St. Francis, KS; father Eddie Whitney of Norton, KS; stepchildren, Teresa Douthit of Junction City, KS, Chad Douthit of Basehor, KS, and Megan Douthit-Downey of St. Francis, KS; and 5 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, in the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Norton, KS. Burial will follow in the St. Francis Cemetery, St. Francis, KS at 3:00 p.m.

A Scriptural Wake and Rosary will be conducted Sunday evening at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. The family will then receive friends until 8:30 p.m. at the church.

Mark will lie in state at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, from 12 noon until 9:00 p.m. Saturday and at the Catholic Church in Norton from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Marvin J. “Shorty” Kreutzer, 80, Hays, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at his home.

He was born June 27, 1935 in Liebenthal, Kansas the son of Paul and Rose (Unrein) Kreutzer. He graduated from Hays High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army.

On July 23, 1960 he married Patricia Ann Karlin in Severin, Kansas. They celebrated 55 years of marriage.

He was a meat cutter at P&B Packers and LaCrosse Meat Processing. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, refurbishing fishing poles, gardening, fixing bicycles and tinkering in his work shop. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, two sons; Rick Kreutzer and companion Carmen Gerber of Hays and John Kreutzer and wife Mary of Ellis, two daughters; Cindy Dinkel and husband Mark of Hays, and Karen Klaus and husband Pete of Victoria, a brother Wilfred Kreutzer of Hays, thirteen grandchildren; Brandy Crawford and husband Bradley of Junction City, Elizabeth Jones and husband Logan of Bismark, ND, Adam and Rachel Kreutzer of Hays, Megan Schroeder and husband Josh of Hays, Michael Dinkel of Hays, Matt and Josh Kreutzer of Ellis, Nancy Dinges of Hays, Mackenzie Riedel of Russell, Pete Klaus and wife Merranda of Grand Island, NE, Amber Teel and husband Matt of Salina, Jennifer Klaus of Salina, twelve great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Dennis Kreutzer and wife Kay, three sisters; Georgine Wahlmeier and husband Robert, Elsie Jacobs and husband Simon, and Viola “OlieWeigel and husband LaVerne, a sister in law Patricia Kreutzer, and a great grandson Zander Dinges.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays. Inurnment will be at 1:00 pm in the St. Severin Cemetery in Severin.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, and from 9:30 am until service time on Saturday at the church. A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Joan MacDonnell

Joan MacDonnell, age 90, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on April 5, 1926 in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Edward Arthur and Lilith Lister. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1999 moving from Colorado Springs, Colorado, she was a retired secretary.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Scott City, Kansas.

On January 5, 1952 she married Thomas A. MacDonnell in Allston, Massachusetts. He passed away on May 23, 1984 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Survivors include her One Son – Richard & Maureen MacDonnell of Colorado Springs, Colorado, One Daughter in Law – Connie MacDonnell of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Chris Lister of England, Two Sisters – Margaret Ball of England, Mary Flower of England, Nine Grandchildren and Twenty Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband – Tom, Two Sons – Peter MacDonnell & Todd MacDonnell and One Sister – Barbara.

Memorial Services will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic in Scott City, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2016 with Fr. Bernard Felix presiding.

Thelma E. Branine

Thelma E. Branine, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on August 13, 1917 in Carman, Illinois, the daughter of Cleveland and Nellie Bollander Polson. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since July of 2013 moving from Pueblo, Colorado, she was a farm wife and Avon Representative.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Holly, Colorado.

On November 1, 1933 she married Haysler Allen Branine in Syracuse, Kansas. He passed away on February 18, 1999 in Pueblo, Colorado.

Survivors include her One Son – Allen & Jackie Branine of Manitou Springs, Colorado, Three Daughters – Linda & Bob Wilson of Pueblo, Colorado, Sue & Randy Eddy of Thornton, Colorado, Nikki & Bob Cooper of Scott City, Kansas, One Daughter In Law – Albina Branine of Pueblo, Colorado, One Sister – Nadine O’Connor of Austin, Texas, Eighteen Grandchildren, Forty Three Great Grandchildren and Twelve Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Two Sons – Wayne & Terry, One Brother, Three Sisters and Two Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church of Scott City at 10:00 a.m. (CST) Friday, May 6, 2016 with Pastor Steve Payne and Pastor Scott Wagner presiding.

Cindy was born December 1, 1954 at Colby, Kansas, the daughter of Waldo Emerson & Margaret (Bussen) Hoss. She had earned her Masters Degree in Education and for the past three years taught Business and Math in the Greeley County, Kansas school system. She was a resident of Rye, Colorado. Cindy was of the Catholic Faith.

On September 4, 1972 she married Robert Schneider at Wallace, Kansas.

Sheryl Lyn ‘Sheri’ Gerstberger

Sheri was born March 7, 1951 in Oberlin, Kansas, the daughter of John & Vivian (Vickers) Wade, she was a farm and ranch wife and had been a Leoti, Kansas resident since 1990. She completed several years of college, majoring in Art education and Veterinary Technology.

Sheri loved to paint with watercolors, loved animals of all varieties and she was an excellent cook. She especially loved the outdoors. The family lived in British Columbia and in the Yukon in Canada, where all three children were born. They started their first dairy in the Yukon with milk cows and chickens.

On June 30, 1974, she married Bill Gerstberger, Jr. in Hoxie, Kansas.

Peter B. ‘Pete’ Dlabal

Peter B. “Pete” Dlabal, 100, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 1, 2016 at his home. He was born June 28, 1915 in Wilson, KS to Mary (Wanasek) and John Dlabal.

Pete was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County where he was the general manager of the Ellsworth County Farmers Co-op Union for 24 years. He graduated from Wilson High School and Wichita Business College. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II achieving rank of Staff Sergeant. He served overseas in the SW Pacific Area for 2 ½ years. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post 174, Ellsworth VFW Post 6485 and Knights of Columbus. He was elected to the Kansas Farmers Service Board for 27 years and the County Commissioner Board for 12 years. He also served on many other local and state boards. Pete married Lillian Hochman on April 27, 1949 in Ellsworth. She preceded him in death in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe, John, Frank, Paul, Luke, and Steve; and sisters, Mary Kirk and Verna Vodraska.

Pete is survived by his daughters, Joan Brown (Dave) of Hays, Deborah Dlabal (David Stang) of Albuquerque, NM, Angie Janzen (Kent) of Lorraine, and Pam Dlabal (Eric Johnson) of Eden Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Matthew Brown, Jennifer Nicholson, Sarah Patterson, Jessica Brown, and Alexandria, Daniel, and Taylor Johnson; and great grandchildren, AJ, Avery, and Nicholas Brown.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., Thursday May 5, 2016 at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with family present from 6-7 p.m. and vigil service at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass: 10 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth with a private family burial to follow.

John Patrick ‘Murph’ Murphy

1793157_profile_picJohn Patrick “Murph” Murphy, 70, died May 1, 2016 at home in Great Bend. Born Aug. 13, 1945 at Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of Leo and Dorothy Murphy.

John married Carol Herrman Danielson August 7, 2005 at Colorado Springs, Colo. Mr. Murphy was a Great Bend resident, and proudly served his country, from 1964-1974, in the U.S. Marine Corp, 3rd Marine Division, during the Vietnam era, earning three purple hearts through the course of three tours of duty.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Herrman Danielson, of the home; a son, Michael Danielson of Great Bend; a sister, Carolyn M. Murphy of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Leo Murphy, Jr. of El Cajon, Calif.; a grandchild, Morgan Riva Danielson, of El Cajon, Calif.; brothers in law Cyrill Herrman, Les Herrman and wife Brenda, Fred Rohr, Roy Herrman and wife Hilda, Leon Herrman and wife Debbie; Sisters in law Bertille Herrman, Doris Winslow, Linda Mayberry and husband Jim; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters-in-law: Edna Rohr, Bernie Herrman, and brothers- in law, Elmer Herrman, David Winslow, Orville “Frank” Herrman, Donnie Herrman, Reinhold Herrman, Jr.
