Lloyd Edward Creevan

150x225-4218958Lloyd Edward Creevan passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 at Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 86. He was born on March 2, 1930 to the late Victor and Florence (Wenzl) Creevan in his grandparent’s, John and Elvira Creevan, home. He was baptized at the St. Bridget Catholic Church near Axtell and grew up helping his father farm. He attended County School through the Eighth Grade and graduated from Axtell High School with the Class of 1948.

After graduation, Lloyd continued to farm for a couple of years before moving to Wichita, Kansas to begin work at The Boeing Company in October, 1950. In October, 1951 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After a brief stay at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, he was eventually stationed at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. He completed Basic Training and A&E Mechanic School and spent the next four years teaching aircraft and engine mechanics. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in October, 1955.

Lloyd met Kathryn Mae Garvert in 1954 and they were united in marriage on November 22, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville, Kansas. Together they moved to Stockton, Kansas where they were blessed with, and raised, three daughters, Denise, Donna, and Diane. He worked at the Rooks County Grain Elevator for eleven years, before going to the CO-OP Elevator, where he retired on March 2, 1995. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

Lloyd is survived by his wife Kathryn Creevan of Stockton; daughters Denise Sasse and husband Ivan of Gaylord, Donna Eck and husband Jay of Beloit, and Diane Voss and husband Jon of Stockton; brother Gerald Creevan and wife Joan of Wymore, NE; and grandchildren Matthew Eck, Brittany Eck, Michaela Sasse, Tristan Sasse, Scott Voss, and Shawn Voss.

He was preceded in death by his parents Victor and Florence Creevan, brother Gregory Creevan, and sister Helen Kabriel.

Lloyd lived every day of his life in service to God, his family, and his friends and neighbors. From time spent with children and grandchildren to taking care of Kathryn in later years, no sacrifice was too big, or deed too small, that he would not gladly give of himself for the sake of others. Our lives are blessed for eternity beyond measure because he loved and cared for us so much.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, May 6, 2016 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 pm on Thursday at the Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00 pm with Vigil starting at 7:00 pm. Kathy Jean Osborn

3698565_wlppKathy Jean Osborn, 63, passed away on May 1, 2016 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born on November 22, 1952 in Grayson, Kentucky the daughter of Gussie and Blanche (McGlone) Holbrooks.

She was a Homemaker. She married Sidney Osborne on Tuesday, January 5th, 1971 in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Survivors include her husband, Sidney Osborne; son, Sidney Scott Osborne, McCracken; daughter, Patricia (Chet) Rowan, Kearney, Nebraska; grandchildren, Mikie, Maklie, and Jay Rowan.

Memorial service will be on Saturday, May 7, 2016, 2:00, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, Kansas. Burial in the Vansburgh Cemetery, Brownell, Kansas. Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marcheta J. Cartmill, age 92, of Quinter (formerly of Gove) passed away Monday, May 2, 2016 at Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care.

Lucy C. Hertel

Lucy C. HertelLucy C. Hertel, 83, Hays, died Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas.

Lucy was born on July 4, 1932, to Matt and Anna (Mertes) Lietz in Seguin, Kansas.  Lucy was raised on a farm southeast of Menlo.  She attended grade school in Menlo.  Lucy moved to Hays and lived in the dorm and graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1950.  As a student Lucy worked in the lab at St. Anthony Hospital.  She married Albinus F. Hertel on November 6, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.  Lucy worked at Fort Hays State University in the Memorial Union, and as secretary of the St. Joseph religious education program.  She later became the full-time bookkeeper for the family owned Hertel Tank Service, Inc.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella Circle.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Al Hertel of Parkview Care Center, Osborne, KS, three sons; David (Virginia), Michael (Lori), and John (Laura) all of Hays, one daughter Kathy (Patrick) of Eastvale, CA, eight grandchildren; Christina Hertel of Arvada, CO, Lisa Hertel of Wheat Ridge, CO, Michelle Schlyer, Craig, Marc, Jill, Brett, and Tara Hertel, all of Hays, five great grandchildren; Spencer Hertel-Kadota of Arvada, CO, Jenna and Paige Schlyer, Sophie and Mya Hertel, all of Hays, one step great grandson Reese Owens of Russell, and two sisters in law; Pat Lietz of Wichita and Aletha Hertel of Hays.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers; Leo, Albert, and Gilbert Lietz.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 210 W. 13th Street, Hays.  Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:30 until 10:15 on Tuesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, Hays.  A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 followed by at parish vigil at 6:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested in Lucy’s memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church or to TMP-Marian High School, in care of the funeral home.  Condolence may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com.

Kay F. Wellbrock

Kay WellbrockHays, Kansas – Kay F. Wellbrock, age 82 died Friday, April 29, 2016, at her home in Hays, Kansas.

She was born March 18, 1934, in Hays, Kansas, to Lewis and Joann (Rupp) Hatfield.

She married Leo J. Wellbrock on August 16, 1952 at Wichita, Kansas. He died November 5, 2013.

She was a homemaker and was a bus driver for U.S.D. 489 Transportation Department from 1981 to 1995. She grew up in Hays and was a 1952 graduate of Hays High School. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Pam Whitham and husband, David, Broken Arrow, OK; Kelly Heifner and husband, Jim, Hays, KS; Sandra Seems, Salina, KS; Tina Dix and husband, Doug, Hays, KS; one daughter-in-law, Jolene Wellbrock, Hays, KS; two brothers, Lewis “Butch” Hatfield, Moore, OK; Charles “Chuck” Hatfield and wife, Leona, Hays, KS; 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sons, Gary Wellbrock, Wayne Wellbrock and Leo Steven Wellbrock; two brothers, Kenneth “Corky” Hatfield and Donnie Wayne Hatfield; and one sister, Bonnie Pless.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hays, Kansas. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.

Joseph James Dreiling

Joseph Dreiling- Paper PictureVictoria, Kansas – Joseph James Dreiling, age 58, died Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at his home south of Victoria, Kansas.

He was born January 23, 1958, in Hays, Kansas, to James E. and Charlene (Munk) Dreiling.

He was a 1976 graduate of Russell High School. He attended Victoria High School and attended Fort Hays State University.  He was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. He was an insurance agent for a few years and has worked in construction for 20 years.  He was a talented and gifted musician. He played piano, saxophone and accordion. He was a member of numerous bands including:  The Tony “Red” Pfeifer Polka Band, Madgic, Boogie Grass Fever, Stardust, Dusty Rose, The Wild Wild West Band, Sly-Ridge and was one of the original members of the “Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations” for over 40 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Donna Miller and husband Ted, Emporia, KS; Linda Rogers and husband Scot, Wichita, KS; three nephews, Aaron (Carrie) Miller, Austin Miller, Jerad Rogers; and three nieces, Amy (Brian) Hansen, Hayley Rogers and Sophie Rogers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister Anne Marie Dreiling; his grandparents, John P.A. and Pauline Dreiling, Ted and Alexia Munk.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 2, 2016, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas.  Inurnment will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

Earl Glen Hartzog

150x133-4207825Earl Glen Hartzog passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 86. He was born on May 13, 1929 to Harold Clifton and Dena (Corbin) Kroeze Hartzog on the family farm in Phillips County, Kansas. The family later moved to the Jennings, Kansas area where he grew up. On September 7, 1951 he entered the United States Army and was very proud of the time he spent serving his country. On April 20, 1958 he was united marriage to Patricia “Pat” A. (McKenna) Krizek in Oberlin, Kansas. They made their home in the Dresden area until moving to Hoxie in 1975. Together, they raised three children Mike, Virginia, and Harold.

Earl and Pat farmed until moving to Hoxie where he went to work for Sheridan County Road and Bridge Department until his retirement in 2000. He was a farmer and mechanic for most of his life, but after retirement he helped Pat with her daycare. He loved all of the children in the daycare, and they loved him, always calling him “Papa.”

Earl enjoyed collecting and restoring John Deere tractors. Over the years he and his son Harold acquired quite a large collection. He also collected barbed wire and has one of the most extensive collections in the United States. He loved singing country and bluegrass music, camping and square dancing with Pat, and enjoyed being a square dance caller. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church, as well as the Jennings American Legion Post #351, where in 2014 he received certificates for 60 Years of Continuous Membership and Outstanding Contributor.

Earl is survived by his wife Pat of the home; son Harold Hartzog of Hoxie; daughter Virginia (Irlan) Fullbright of Ellinwood; brothers Daryl Hartzog (Marjorie) of Jennings, Bob Hartzog (Joyce) of Oberlin, and Floyd Gillespie (Erma) of Newcastle, TX; sisters, Darlene LaRue of Oberlin, and Dena Marie Way (Dan) of Springfield, MO; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Dena and step father George Gillespie, son Mike Krizek, daughter-in-law Yvette Hartzog, and grandson Alan Fullbright.

Funeral Services for Earl will be held Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Christian Fellowship Church, Hoxie, Kansas, at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Micah Howery officiating. Burial will be in the Hoxie City Cemetery following the service. Military Honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kansas and Jennings American Legion Post # 351. Hedwig ‘Hedy’ Bucl

1787791_profile_picHedwig “Hedy” Bucl, 84, died April 24, 2016, at Good Samaritan in Hays. Born Sept. 14, 1931, in LaCrosse, she was the daughter of Jacob and Apollonia (Kreutzer) Unrein. On Oct. 23, 1951 she married Ernest James Bucl in LaCrosse. He died on Sept. 14, 2014. She worked at Legleiters and Mammels Grocery Stores, Rex Café, Inez’s Restaurant, as a domestic engineer in many area homes, preparing for auctions and the historical museum. She enjoyed genealogy, playing cards, auctions, antiques, cooking, gardening, reading, bird watching, and nature. She was very family oriented and created many wonderful memories around her kitchen table with family and friends.

Mrs. Bucl was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Altar Society, the Monday Evening Club, all in Timken. She served on the election board, the Bohemian National Cemetery board, church board and was involved in 4-H.

Survivors include five children, Loarn Bucl of Sublette, Diana Sunley and her husband Ralph of Great Bend, Craig Bucl and his wife Jody of McPherson, Brad Bucl and his wife Lanna of Hill City, and Bryan Bucl and his wife Chollet of Wichita; one brother, Gary Unrein and his wife Janet of Lincoln, Neb.; one sister, Ruth Slater of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren, Casper Bucl, Lucas Bucl, Sheldon Bucl, Colby Bucl, Alicia Easlon, Rachel Colby, Jennifer Vratil, Ryan Smith, Lacey Stowers, Emily Bucl, Megan Bucl, Madisyn Bucl, and Makaela Bucl; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 siblings, Martina Flax, infant triplets, Rose, Katherine and Elizabeth Unrein, Mary Weber, Edwin Unrein, Marvin Unrein, Mildred Kirmer, James Unrein, and Kenneth Unrein.

Vigil Service with Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken with Father Charles Mazouch and Father Ultan Murphy concelebrating. Jeanette K. Haskett

Agra resident Jeanette K. Haskett passed away Wednesday, April 27 at her home in Agra at the age of 70.

Survivors include her husband Gerald of the home; 3 sons, Kenton Abbott of Great Bend, Joe and Wade Haskett of Agra; 2 daughters, Regina Lutgen of McPherson and Andrea Abbott of Agra; her brother, Delaine Thomas of Prairie View and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Phillipsburg. A private family interment will follow in the Haskett Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:00 to 9:00 Saturday and Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The Rev. Herbert James ‘Herb’ Burdsall

The Rev. Herbert James “Herb” Burdsall, 95, Hays, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home.

He was born December 3, 1920 in Shandon, Ohio the son of Aaron Clarence and Blanche Leora (Murphy) Burdsall. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and was on landing craft in Tarawa, Tinian, and Saipan.

On February 12, 1942 he married Jeanne Dutiel in Hamilton County, Ohio. She died June 9, 2011. He received his Masters in Divinity degree from Colgate University in Rochester, New York. He was a United Methodist Minister for many years serving rural churches in Simms, Sun River, Lincoln, Cascade, Augusta, the Dearborn, Miles City, and Billings, Montana, and churches in Alexandria, Ohio and North Chili, New York. He was the Kansas CROP director for Church World Services in Topeka, KS and the Assistant Director for CROP at the national office in Elkhart, Indiana in which he traveled to Burma, Peru, Chili, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He was the director of fundraising at Greencroft Retirement Community in Goshen, Indiana and for the Yellowstone Conference in Montana. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, riding motorcycles and traveling, and serving the parishioners of his numerous rural churches.

Survivors include a son, Jonathan Burdsall and his wife Helen Peck-Burdsall of Helena, Montana, a daughter Hannah Barrett and husband Jim of Hays, five grandchildren, Aaron Burdsall and wife Angie and Matthew Burdsall and wife Miranda, all of Helena, MT, Tessie Barrett and husband Paul Talley of Brooklyn Park, MN, Jordan Barrett and wife Karen of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Samuel Barrett and wife Kelly of Emporia, KS, twelve great grandchildren, Jasmyn, Kaelen, Caleb, Talon, Maddon, Marley, Everett, Rylea, Gwyn, Rachel, Cora, and Lucy, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his dear wife Jeanne, a granddaughter Sarah Burdsall, a great grandson Leo Barrett, and by three brothers.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th Street, Hays. Military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard and the Hays American Legion Riders will follow the church services. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until service time on Friday at the church.

Laura Mae (Trick) Atkinson

Laura Mae (Trick) Atkinson was born July 12, 1929, in Anderson, IN to Mertie Juanita (Turner) and Homer F. Trick and left this earth on April 10, 2016. She was residing at Cedar View Assisted Living in Hays. She married Edwin Fay Bennett on November 30, 1947 in Alton, IL and to this marriage three children were born. She later married Clyde Atkinson on September 11, 1981 in Philipsburg, KS.

Laura was a lifelong learner. She graduated from De Soto High School, De Soto MO in 1947 and throughout her life took many college and seminar classes. Laura and Ed managed the Norton Airport from 1954-1962. During that time, Laura earned her pilot’s license on Mother’s Day, 1960.  Laura then worked as the Norton County Deputy Registrar of Deeds until the fall of 1963 when she and Ed purchased the Jennings Journal and Seldon Advocate newspaper residing in Jennings. They published the newspaper until March of 1967 when the business was destroyed by fire.

They moved to Logan in June of 1967 after purchasing the Logan Republican. Laura remained as owner and publisher even after Ed’s declining health. Following her marriage to Clyde, he helped her with the newspaper and she helped him with “Clyde’s Café”. They moved to Hays following retirement.

A member of the Kansas Press Association, Laura received numerous editorial and other awards. She also belonged to Kansas Press Women’s Association, Logan and Hays Business and Professional Women’s Association, Palco Art Club and various other organizations. She served for many years on the Northwest Kansas Housing Board and on the Dream Inc. Board.

As a preacher’s daughter, Laura was raised to believe and have a strong faith in Jesus Christ. That lead her to have a conviction to help the poor and anyone in need throughout her life. Loving people was always second nature to her. She was a member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Hays and various Bible Study groups.

Laura leaves behind her three children – Carolyn (Bennett) and Dr. John Rule, Edwin and Chris Bennett and John Bennett; grandchildren – Michelle (Rule) and Jeb Brewster, Melissa (Rule) and David Laughlin, Matthew Rule, Amanda (Bennett) and Jake Swim, Dustin Byler, Andrew Bennett and Tiffany Bennett; and six great grandchildren.
Also surviving are her step-children – Sonja (Atkinson) Roberts, Richard and Lisa Atkinson, Craig and Deborah Atkinson, Charles (Chuck) Atkinson and Tony and Kelley Atkinson and several step-grandchildren.  She leaves a sister, Mona LaShure; brother, Lee Trick and sister-in-law, Mildred (Midge) Trick.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, husbands, brothers, Homer Trick, Jr and Virgil Trick and step-granddaughter Mindy Atkinson.

Memorial services will be Saturday, May 7th at 11:00 am in St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd in Hays.
