Stony Spence

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 7.54.22 AMStony Spence, age 59 of Victoria passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016 in Victoria.He was born December 12, 1956 in Ft. Campbell, KY to Reb T. and Lucy (Hammack) Spence.

He worked for the Russell Kansas School District at the Elementary School. He enjoyed his work and being able to interact with the school kids. He also enjoyed family playing guitar and singing and had been part of a local band Common Ground at one time.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Gregory of Victoria; his mother, Lucy Spence of carrollton, TX; a daughter, Kelsey Ellen Spence of Great Bend, KS; a brother, Robert S. Spence of Carrollton, TX; a sister, Paula Hoppe of Miraloma, CA; a step son, Jason Gregory and wife Tina and their children, Damien and Aria Gregory all of Kirwin, KS.

He was preceded in death by his father, Reb T. Spence, grandparents, Stony and Annabelle Hammack and Austin and Mae Spence as well as a step daughter, Audrey Gregory.

Local visitation will be Wednesday 5 PM – 7 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Friday, April 8, 2016 at Scott’s Funeral Home 2425 E. Main Carrollton, TX. 76528. Burial will follow services in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Visitation will be be 6 PM – 8 PM Thursday at Scott’s Funeral Home.

W. Marvin Daniels

W. Marvin Daniels, age 99, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on November 18, 1916 in Scott County, Kansas, the son of William Henry and Ida Jane Binns Daniels. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a farmer and rancher.

A US Army Veteran of World War II with the rank of Staff Sgt, he was a member of the American Legion and Farm Bureau.

On August 1, 1942 he married Ruth Irma Klitzke in Rolla, Missouri. She survives.

Survivors include his Wife – Ruth I. Daniels of Scott City, Kansas, Two Daughters – Dea Daniels Kerr & Jerry Kerr of Winnebago, Missouri, Gaye & Tom Fleming of Olathe, Kansas, Two Grandsons – Logan & Nicolette Fleming of Olathe, Kansas, Ian & Emily Fleming of Olathe, Kansas, Two Great Grandchildren – Kellan Fleming of Olathe, Kansas and McKinney Fleming of Olathe, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and One Brother – Raymond Daniels.

Graveside Services will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016 with Pastor John Tuttle presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Scott County VIP Center or Prairie View Church of the Brethren % Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Roy Lee ‘Cookie’ Cook

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 7.52.29 AMRoy Lee “Cookie” Cook, age 80, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Roy was born January 13, 1936 in Las Animas, Colorado, the son of Ralph W. & Harriett Bernice (Corf) Cook. He had been a resident of Wichita County, Kansas since 1963 moving from Las Animas, Colorado. He was a farmer and had served his country in the United States Army from 1955 through 1959.

Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Wichita County Amusement Association, both of Leoti, Kansas and the NRA.

On December 16, 1960 he married Emma Lou Dean at Las Animas, Colorado. Emma passed away on December 25, 2011 in Leoti, Kansas.

Roy’s surviving family includes

Selma M. Ray

Selma was born September 29, 1926 in Tribune, Kansas, the daughter of John Oscar & Ferne E. (Dossett) Carlson. She had been a lifetime resident of Tribune until retiring to Sun City, Arizona in 1993. She was a homemaker and Secretary/Book keeper for Ray Oil Company.

Selma had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Tribune, Kansas, as well as The Shepherd Of The Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City, Arizona. She was also a former Stephen Minister.

On November 15, 1953 she married Russell H. Ray in Tribune, Kansas. Russell passed away on February 3, 2001 Sun City, Arizona.

Selma’s surviving family includes-

William Duane ‘Bill’ Driscoll

William Duane “Bill” Driscoll, 63, of Russell, Kansas passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at his home.

Bill was born November 29, 1952 in Ellsworth, Kansas, the son of Jack D. and Hazel (Trast) Driscoll. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. He then attended two years at Fort Hays State University.

Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Indochina and Korea. After his tour of duty he returned to Russell.

Bill was united in marriage to Beverly Black on June 8, 1984 in Russell. This union was blessed with two sons; Chris and David. They made their home in Russell.

Bill was a carpenter and contractor most of his life. He was the owner and operator of Driscoll Construction. Early in life, he worked as a rig hand in the oil fields. He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. He enjoyed skeet shooting with his boys, playing with his dogs, doing barbeques and boating at Lake Wilson.

Surviving family include his wife of 31 years, Beverly of the home; sons, Chris Driscoll and David Driscoll both of Russell, Kansas; brother, Jack Driscoll of Russell, Kansas; sister, Joyce Moore (John) of Severance, Colorado; mother-in-law, Melva Dortland of Gorham, Kansas; and two granddaughters, Macie Jo Scott and Lola Driscoll. He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Elmer Dortland.

Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Emma N. Nelson

Emma N. Nelson, 77, of Oakley, died April 1, 2016, at Logan County Hospital, Oakley. She was born October 16, 1938, in Oakley, to Alvin and Julia (Bogart) Richardson. Emma married Donald L. Nelson on July 15, 1956. They lived on a farm in Page City until January, 1970, when they moved to Oakley. She loved flowers, gardening, her stuffed animals and wind chimes, which she collected and filled her home with. Emma worked at the school cafeteria and Logan County Hospital, until Don needed her at home. She also enjoyed working in the community, helping people with laundry, housecleaning, yard work and she was a caregiver for several people. She was always ready to help someone in need. Emma loved her children and brought them up to be firm in their faith. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Emma also served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Craft Club and Card Club. She was always friendly and would talk to anyone that would listen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Don; son, Douglas; two sisters and three brothers.

Emma is survived by her children, Sherrol Hamilton, Oakley, Gaylene (Philip) Basa, Brockton, MA and Kevin Nelson, Oakley; grandchildren, Brandon Basa, Brockton, MA, Carlos Basa, Brockton , MA, Cameron Nelson, Hoxie, KS and Kalli Nelson, Goodland, KS; brother, Albert Richardson, Holton, KS, sister-in-laws, Nelda Dinning, Northglenn, CO, Geraldine Richardson, Colby, KS and Darlene Agan, Oberlin, KS and brother-in-law Gene Meadows, Crestview, FL.

Albert L. Temaat

He was born February 25, 1936, in Oakley, KS to John B. and Julia (Grasser) Temaat. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1955 and then served in the United States Army from 1955 – 1957. On June 1, 1959, he married Valeria Mannebach, in Seguin, KS. Al was a general contractor for 50 years. His legacy still stands in Oakley and the surrounding area where he built a large number of homes. His love for Christ and love for his family were apparent in his daily actions. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oakley and a 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Al served on the St. Joseph School Council and also the Oakley City Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and William and sister Bertha Lee.

Al is survived by his wife, Val; children, Brenda Temaat, Becky (Jim) Hulse, Julie (Roy) Tower, Janell Temaat, Audrey Temaat and Brad Temaat; grandchildren, Cassy, Jay, Grace, and Josh Temaat, Clayton Temaat, Austin and Amber Tower; brother, Paul Temaat; sisters, Mary Ann Porter and Lu Ewing and sister-in-law’s, Joan Temaat and Phyllis Temaat.

Alita L. Wells Barrows

3645741_wlppAlita L. Wells Barrows, 76, died Friday, April 1, 2016, at Trego Manor, WaKeeney, KS. She was the daughter of William H. and Alice Flaiz Wells. She was born May 10, 1939, in Scott City, KS. She was a graduate of Scott County Community High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

She was united in marriage to Rodney T. Barrows on September 2, 1961, in Scott City, KS. Of this union were born two sons, R. Scott and R. Todd. They were married for 52 years until Rod’s death.

Alita spent her life devoted to faith, family and community. She cherished time with her husband and sons supporting her sons’ activities. She served as a Sunday school teacher, cub scout leader, 4-H community leader and encourager to all. She enjoyed serving as an officer for the Ness County Old Settlers Reunion. She enjoyed being a part of the PEO Sisterhood, Extension Home Unit and Bridge Club. Alita retired after 27 years from the Ness County Hospital where she worked in the business office.

She was preceded in death by four brothers: Malvin Wells, Willard Wells, Howard Wells, and Edd Wells; a sister Maggie Conine; and her parents. She is survived by sisters Willma Baker, Scott City, and Charlotte Holmes, San Diego, Cal.

Other survivors include her two sons, R. Scott “Bronc” Barrows, WaKeeney, and R. Todd Barrows (Janet), Manhattan; 4 grandchildren, Tara Ann Mahoney (Mark), Jordan Breit (Erica), Rachel McPherson, and Ethan McPherson; and 2 great-grandchildren, Tayler Mahoney and Addyson Mahoney.

Funeral service will be Tuesday April 5, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Ness City with burial in the Ness City Cemetery.

Friends may call on Monday, April 4 from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Richard Harrison ‘Bud’ Bearley

Richard Harrison ‘Bud’ Bearley died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the Atwood Good Samaritan Center at the age of 97.

He was born the third of six children of Harry A. ‘Gus’ and Effie Palmer Bearley Sr. February 23, 1919 at the homestead north of Atwood. After graduating from Atwood High School Bud and his brother Wilbur went in search of employment in Washington state.

While there, he met and married Harriet Haskell in McCleary. Shortly after their marriage he was employed in Kenia, Alaska building barracks for the soldiers. They returned to Atwood where he enlisted in the Air Corps. He was an airplane sheet metal worker while stationed in Texas. At his discharge December 3, 1945 he received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. They returned to Rawlins County where he was employed first by Palmer Glass Shop. He continued to farm and ranch and they owned and operated the Western Auto store in downtown Atwood and later moved to Hwy 36 with the Western Auto/Apco Station.

His strong work ethic allowed him to also, at the same time, hold a dual appointment with the United States Post Office as a clerk/carrier from which he retired with over 30 years of service. But, he liked nothing better than to get the cowboys together to work cattle. Bud also loved spending time with family and friends camping and fishing on the lakes near home.

He was a member of the American Legion Post of Atwood, the Masonic Lodge, where he recently received his 75 year pin, and the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and oldest son, Dick. His brother, Wilbur, and sisters Albertina Richmond and Retta Berger.

He leaves to mourn his son, Craig and Valerie, his sister Effie Fields and brother Harry A. Bearley Jr. of Atwood. Granddaughter Sarah and Aaron Tobaben of Leawood, KS; Freeman and Niki Bearley of McPherson, KS and Nicholas and Melody Bearley of Atwood. Eight great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bud influenced many people in many ways, his integrity and loyalty were blessings he passed on to all those who knew and loved him. His words to live by, ‘growing old is not for sissies’.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Baalmann Mortuary, in Atwood, KS. Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Atwood, KS. Royce E. Wilson

Almena, KS resident, Royce E. Wilson, passed away early Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at his home at the age of 70 years.

He was born July 16, 1945 in Norton County, KS the son of Donald F. & Mildred L. (Thacker) Wilson. He served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam Era.

He was united in marriage to Jean Ann Quinn on June 9, 1968 at the Almena Congregation Church in Almena. She survives.

Other survivors include his daughters, Marty Wolfe & husband, Charlie of Alma, NE and Monica Wilson and David Riemann of Norton, KS; son, Matt Wilson & wife, Kim of Garner, IA; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and a brother, Roger Wilson & wife, Rayleen of Ottumwa, IA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Almena Congregational Church in Almena with Pastor Kirk Kasson officiating. Cremation will follow services.

Royce will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday evening and again from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661. The family will receive friends for visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral chapel.
