Evelyn Mae Evans, 87, of Russell died Monday, March 21, 2016, at Russell Regional Hospital. Evelyn was born Nov. 28, 1928 at Charleston, Ark, the eldest daughter of John R. and Eva (Buckner) Ralston.
Evelyn lived her early years and started elementary school in the Charleston area. Later the family moved to Ottawa, Ill, then settled in Columbus, KS, where her father was senior shovel operator for the Pittsburg/Midway Coal Mining Company. Evelyn graduated from Columbus High School where she was the schoolbook editor her senior year. Following graduation, Evelyn was hired as social correspondent and circulation manager for The Modern Light newspaper in Columbus. At the Modern Light she met Allan D. Evans. Al and Evelyn were married on Nov. 28, 1946, in the Columbus Christian Church. Al and Evelyn joined the Townsley family’s Russell newspaper enterprises in July, 1949. Both Al and Evelyn were active in Russell Publishing Company, Inc., and other newspaper and publishing ventures for more than 54 years.
Evelyn is survived by two children, David Allan Evans, Russell, and Diana Lynne Maier (Richard), Kechi, KS. She is survived by six grandchildren: Danni Eldred (Jon), Colorado Springs, CO; Christi Tenholder (Tim) Topeka; Shawn Evans(Sara) and Scott Evans, Russell; Ariane Vagen (Richard) and Brandon Evans St. Louis, MO; and a step-grandchild Michelle Casey (Spencer) Hays. Evelyn is survived by 16 great-grandchildren, Chad, Ruby and Katy Eldred; Andrew, Jon and Ryan Tenholder; Alyssa, Cade, Bailey, and Caleigh Evans; Wyatt and Max Evans; and Laura, Haley, Alexis, and Ryan Casey. Evelyn lost her husband Allan and a grandson, Cael Evans of Russell, in August 2015. She was great-great-grandmother to Cecelia Eldred of Wichita.
Evelyn is also survived by her brother John R. Ralston (Pat) of Poughkeepsie, NY and sister Esther Ralston of Tucson, AZ, and one adopted sister, Edith Addis. Nephews and nieces are Richard Evans (Betty), Webb City, MO, Mendy and Rick; Jane Ann Turner, and Marilyn Epler (Tom), Charley and Lizzie Ann, Columbus, KS; Donald Bauer (Dr. Beth Bartlet), and Britt, Colby, Christina and Alex, Carthage, MO; Barbara Ralston and Bruce Ralston (Eileen Frering) Kelly, John and Alex, Poughkeepsie, NY. Another nephew, Fred Evans, of Columbus, preceded her in death.
Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, March 25, 2016 at the First Congregational Church of Russell with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established with the Russell County Veterans Memorial. Contributions and condolences may be sent in care to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
Margaret Louise Untereiner, 64, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Ellis, Kansas.
Margaret was born on February 12, 1952, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Frank W. and Isabelle D. (Brack) Untereiner. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1970. She worked for over 20 years for Elcon Services Incorporated. For almost 30 years she has been working for Abco Wire as a line worker. She was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell and as a little girl she was a member of the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed reading books, walking, driving around in her 1976 Trans-Am and babysitting children. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
Surviving family include her mother Isabelle of Russell; brothers Frank W. Untereiner, Jr. of Russell and Carl Untereiner of Leavenworth, Kansas; sisters Sharon Herbel of Russell and Sarah Younger of Olmitz, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Frank, Sr. on May 27, 2008.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with John Dumler officiating. Harold E. “Gus” Augustine, age 87, died Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Hays Medical Center.
He was born November 29, 1928, in Hays, Kansas to Michael and Anna (Weaver) Augustine. He married Vera (Wolf) on August 18, 1953 in Hays, Kansas.
He was a lineman for Midwest Energy Inc. for forty years and retired in 1987. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a Senior Lineman and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hays, Kansas. After he retired he worked at R and A Electric for several years and he enjoyed spending time fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Augustine, of the home; two sons, Tim Augustine, Terry Augustine and wife Christy, all of Hays, KS; one daughter, Carmen Fukasawa and husband Yoshi, Wichita Falls, TX; one brother, Kenneth Augustine and wife, Barbara, Grove, OK; two sisters-in-law, Mary Augustine, Shawnee, KS; Ann Augustine, Hays, KS; one brother-in-law, George Pfeifer, Omaha, NE; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Courtney, Aubrey, Chelsey Augustine; Yoshihisa Fukasawa and wife, Sarah; Asami Shook and husband, Brad; Kenji Fukasawa and wife, Leighe; four great grandchildren, Ava Fukasawa, Noah Fukasawa, Grace Fukasawa and Kinsley Shook.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Harold Augustine Jr.; one great grandson, Jacob Fukasawa; three brothers, Leroy “Dick” Augustine and wife, Wilma; Mike Augustine, Wayne Augustine; five sisters, Mary Ann Dreiling and husband Linus; Jeanie Pfeifer; Velma Harned and husband, Duane; Valeria Ader and husband Oran; Betty Flannery and husband, Charlie; one infant brother, Dale Augustine; and one infant sister, Marjorie Augustine.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas, 67601. Inurnment will be at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Schoenchen, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post #9076.

Helen Arlene Schaben, was born on November 25, 1925 in LaCrosse, KS. The daughter of Henry Jr. and Elizabeth (Koch) Foos. She departed this life at Ness County Hospital on March 20, 2016.
Helen was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Ness City, UMW, American Legion Auxiliary and Historical Society. She attended schools in Ness County.
She was united in marriage to Ben Gumesheimer. Four children were born to this union. Later she married Melford Schaben.
Family was important to her. Her home was always open for family and friends. Her cooking was one of her enjoyments that family remembers her by. Her favorite hobby was embroidering.
She is survived by her three daughters, Henrietta (Elvin) Harris, Plains, KS, Clarnetta Whipple, Ness City, and Rayetta (Donnie) Hoss, Ness City; her sister, Alberta Douglas, Great Bend and brother Clarence (Ethel) Foos, Bazine, Kansas and sister-in law Enid Foos, Ness City; eight grandchildren, Annetta (Pat) Fellhoelter, Bryan Whipple, Janetta (Pete) Flax, Loretta (Hunter)McMillen, Brett (Mary Ann) Harris, Shayla (Gary) Grasser, Erik (Amber) Harris, Donnetta (Brian) Schafer, and Brad (Dana) Hoss and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Larry and grandson Kirk Harris.
She is never gone from us but will live in our hearts forever.
Funeral service will be on Thursday, March 24, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Ness City with burial in the Bazine Cemetery.

The funeral service for Goodland, Kansas resident Marvin D. Cullens, 83, will be held Thursday, March 24, 10:30 AM MT at the First United Methodist Church in Goodland. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Goodland Cemetery.

Henrietta Unrein, 82, Hays, died Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Hays Medical Center.
She was born January 24, 1934 in Hays the daughter of Albert and Angela (Pfannenstiel) Doerfler. She was a graduate of Girl’s Catholic High School in 1952. On October 17, 1959 she married Gary Unrein in Hays. He died February 25, 2007. She was a bookkeeper for many years for State Distributors in Hays. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and growing a vegetable garden when she was younger, and enjoyed going on gambling trips with her husband and other family members.
Survivors include three nephews; Mike Doerfler and wife Tina of Hays and their children Kyle and Sierra, Tom Doerfler and wife Debbie of Salina and their children Brian, Kevin, Missy, and Stacey, Brad Doerfler and wife Michelle of Barberton, Ohio and their children Brandon, Brant, Brady, Bryant, Dillon, and Trent, and a niece; Pat Klaus and husband Mike of Hays and their children Whitney and Justin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers; Eugene “Gene” Doerfler, Alfred “Fred” Doerfler, and Alvin D. Doerfler, and two sisters; Minnie Zimmerman and Marcella Pfannenstiel.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Burial will take place in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, or to masses, in care of the funeral home. Don Binder, 76, of Montrose, CO, died on Friday, March 11, 2016 at his home in Montrose.
Don was born on August 3, 1939 near Munjor, Kansas, the son of Adolph and Eleanor (Pfannenstiel) Binder. He grew up on the family dairy farm near Hays and attended Munjor Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy. After graduation Don enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
Don graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1971 with an Education Specialist Degree in School Psychology. He worked in his chosen field of education as a school psychologist and administrator for 30 years, ending his career as the Director of Student Services for the Montrose County School District. During his career, he worked tirelessly to provide educational services to children with special needs.
Although the mountain landscape was what brought Don to Colorado, it was the desert landscape of south eastern Utah that he truly loved. He began hiking in the Cedar Mesa and Grand Gulch areas in the late ‘70s and continued to wander there as often as he could. He was an active member of the Chipeta Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society.
Don is survived by his wife Elizabeth, with whom he shared 38 wonderful years. Together they shared four children: Mitchell Carroll and wife Susie of Mountain Grove, MO.; Curt Weimer and wife Buffy of Kemah, Texas; Jody Weimer and wife Kim of Nucla; and Amy Carver and partner Brad Duran of Grand Junction, CO. Also surviving are grandchildren: Michael, Jennifer, and Anne Carroll; Megan, Gordon, Tyler, Logan, and Morgan Weimer; Hannah, Haley, and Cacy Carver; and Myta and Jared Smith; and great-grandchildren Rowdy, Emma, and Paetynn.
Our family survivors include Elaine Horne (Ron) of Canyon City, CO; Kathleen Ward (Les) of Hays, KS; and Barb Elliott (Jeff) of Natoma, KS, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A private family Celebration of Life was held in Montrose on March 15, 2016.
Ryan James Brown, 41, of Seattle, Washington, died on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at his home in Seattle.
Ryan was born on May 14, 1974, in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Stewart A. and Sharon K. (Earp) Brown. Ryan grew up in the Shawnee Mission, Kansas, area, attended local schools and graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1992. He attended Kansas State University after high school. Ryan was an Eagle Scout. With his career he moved to San Francisco, California and then to Seattle, Washington. He worked in the information technology field for EMC Corporation as an Information Applications Developer. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, cooking and eating fine food.
Surviving family members include his parents Stewart A. and Sharon K. Brown of Norman, Oklahoma; aunts and uncles Rhonda Rinehart, Karen and Jim Ansell, Jon and Vicki Brown, Joel Brown; and numerous cousins and caring friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Elma Brown of Gorham and Wendel and LaVon Earp of Russell.
A memorial service to honor Ryan’s life will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Cremation has preceded the services and inurnment of the remains will follow service. Memorials may be given to the H. Roe Bartle Boy Scout Camp and sent in care of the mortuary. Gerald E. Yeager, 79, died March 4, 2016 in Napa, California. He was born December 16, 1936 in Bazine, Kansas, the son of Emanuel and Lydia Giske Yeager.
He graduated from Bazine High School in 1954.
After graduating, Gerry served in the United States Air Force from March 21, 1956 to January 15, 1960.
He married Mary Ann Filbert August 17, 1958 in Bazine, Kansas. There were no children born to this union.
In 1962, he graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He obtained a Masters Degree from Denver University.
He was employed for a short time with the Bazine Coop before obtaining a job with Equitable Real Estate in Denver, CO. He was transferred to their office in San Francisco and later became Vice-President of Equitable Real Estate San Francisco.
While working for Equitable Real Estate he was awarded the respected CRE (Counselor of Real Estate) professional designation by the American Society of Real Estate Counselors and the MAI from the Appraisers Institute of America. He retired after 29 years with Equitable Real Estate.
Gerry and Mary lived in San Francisco for several years before moving to Napa, CA.
He is survived by sisters-in-law Cora Lee Filbert of Charleston, IL, Ruth Filbert of Hutchinson, KS, Judy Boor of Irwin, PA. Two nieces, Julie (Reed) Benedict, Tandy (Phil) Bailey and six nephews, Douglas (Alison) Filbert, Dwight (Michelle) Filbert, Myron (Erin) Filbert, David (Janet) Filbert, Dan (Becky) Filbert, Aaron (Terry) Boor. He will be missed by other members of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, and brothers-in-law, Edward and Duane Filbert.
