Allen T. Musbach

Allen T. Musbach went home to be with the Lord, and those who went before him on Sunday, March 6, 2016. He was born in Ness City on Feb. 1, 1920 to Harvey and Kathryn (Nonnast) Musbach.

He graduated from Ness City High School with the Class of 1938.

In his early years, Allen worked as a typesetter for the Ness County News. He served in the US Army during WW2 from 1942-1945. Allen saw combat in New Guinea, New Georgia, Russel Islands, and New Zealand where he supervised a 12 men M-1 Rifle squad. During his service in the South Pacific, Allen was injured, for which he received a purple heart. Allen also was involved with the “War Bond Drives” after he returned to the states.

He returned to Ness City after his service and had a chance meeting at a church revival with the love of his life, Mina Hartzler. They were married on Jan. 19, 1951.

In March of 1961, Allen was ordained as a minister in the Assembly of God Church. They ministered at Sterling, Greensburg, and Morland, KS, but he especially cherished his time as he pastored at the Morland church.

He and Mina had an interest in youth, and became child evangelists, which allowed them to travel all over the US for camps and services for many years. In this ministry, he was well known for his magic tricks and great storytelling abilities as Mina would draw out the Bible story they were sharing.

After retiring, they lived in Bakersfield, CA to help care for Mina’s brother, Harvey, until his death.

Upon their return to Ness City, Allen became an active member of the Frank Stull Post #152 of Ness City. He was well known for his heartfelt prayers and messages he offered as the Post Chaplain. He assisted with many military funerals.

He graciously shared his talent of offering sincere and meaningful prayers, and was known to be a ‘caregiver’ to many. He spent many hours visiting with his sisters and their families. Allen loved music and was self-taught in playing many instruments, including the piano and ‘saw’. He loved to share his keen sense of Ness City history, even up to his last days.

Preceding him in death last Christmas day was his wife of 65 years, Mina Musbach; his parents, Harvey & Kathryn Musbach; sister, Irene Stenzel and brother-in-laws Earl Burditt and Frank Miller.

He is survived by his sisters Vi Burditt and Arlene Miller; and a brother-in-law Ralph Stenzel, all of Ness City. Also surviving Allen is his nieces and nephews: Loren Stenzel, Ness City; Kent Miller, Beloit; Kirk Miller, LaCrosse; Annette Frey, Broken Arrow, OK; Jan Tittel and Shari Schwietzer of Olathe; Keith Burditt, Ness City; Kenny Burditt, Wichita; Russell Burditt, Kansas City; and Carol Straub of Oklahoma City, OK, along with their families. Joyce Arlene (Blickenstaff) Corwin

corwin, legacy printJoyce Arlene (Blickenstaff) Corwin went to be with her Lord peacefully on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the LTC in Quinter, KS. She was 88 years of age. She was born on January 29, 1928 to Carl and Pauline (Smith) Blickenstaff in Quinter, Kansas.

Joyce attended all of her school years in the Quinter school system and graduated from Quinter High School in 1946.

Joyce was united in marriage to Merlin (Bub) Corwin in 1946 at Columbus, Kansas. They lived in both Emporia, Kansas and Hays, Kansas while Bub was in college. Bub and Joyce moved to Quinter, Kansas in 1949 where they lived the rest of their lives. Bub passed away in 1999.

Joyce was a member of the Quinter United Methodist Church where she celebrated her faith. Joyce loved her Lord and Savior and had great joy in sharing Him any way she was given an opportunity to do so. For many years, Joyce taught children’s Sunday school, attended adult Sunday school classes, taught vacation Bible school, directed the Christmas program, and was active in the United Methodist Women. She especially cherished sharing the gift of the cross and the message that “He Arose.” Another joy of Joyce’s was helping to organize and participate in the Prayer and Praise group at Gove County Long Term Care Center (LTC) for over 20 years.

Time spent in several social clubs in Quinter, the Stitch and Chatter Club, Gyne Fealti, and the Widows Night Out Club, provided special friendships through the years. As a volunteer member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Joyce helped run the gift shop and multiple other jobs around the hospital. She also served as a member of the Hospital Endowment Committee for many years.

Joyce assisted her husband, Bub, in managing and operating the Q-Inn Restaurant for a number of years. She then worked at Ray’s Pharmacy for several years. In 1977, Bub and Joyce moved to the Blickenstaff farm and eventually took over the operation from Carl and Pauline In 1999, Bub passed away, however, Joyce continued to live on the farm until 2015. At that time, she moved to the LTC in Quinter where she extended her kind-hearted ways and positive attitude to the other residents and staff. They all became an important part of her new stage in life. Joyce enjoyed gardening, especially caring for the 100-year-old asparagus patch. She also maintained her rhubarb patch, which provided enough for her to make her well-known homemade rhubarb ice cream. She also planted and cared for numerous flowerbeds, especially enjoying the lilies. She loved being outside as much as possible as the caretaker of the farmstead, including plants, trees, cats, and other animals.

Joyce and Bub were blessed with five children: James and wife Carolyn, Buhler, KS; Virginia and husband David Hefner, Hays, KS; Donald, Quinter, KS; Richard and wife Mary, Quinter, KS; and Robert and wife Jayme, Quinter, KS.

Eight grandchildren blessed Joyce and Bub’s life with laughter, love, and incredible memories. Many of those special times were when grandchildren spent time at the farm during the summer. Grandchildren include: Kristen and husband Jeff Wright; Jennifer and husband Justin Wood; Samantha and husband Faron Kraft; Jay and wife Becca Corwin; Sadie Corwin; Cody, Marissa, and Colton Corwin.

There were 11 great grandchildren, including: Tyler, Kayla, Natalie, and Lydia Wright; Miles, Olivia, and Crosby Wood; Teron, Triston, and Tera Kraft; and Mabyn Corwin.

Joyce left a positive impression on all that she met. She was a loving wife, cherished mother, fun-loving grandmother, and kind-hearted great grandmother. In addition, close relationships with cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends were very important to her.

And, as we all know Joyce, she would have wanted her life, her relationships, and her memorial to provide another opportunity to reach anyone who had not accepted Jesus as his or her savior. That is an immense part of her legacy for all of us. As she often said, “God so loved” and “Praise the Lord”.

A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the United Methodist Church, Quinter. An intimate private family burial will take place prior to services.

Visitation will be Friday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Quinter.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions may be given to the Quinter United Methodist Church and the Gove County Medical Center Auxiliary. Contributions may be left at the service or sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main, Quinter, KS 67752.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.schmittfuneral.com.

LETTER: Community again came together in light of tragedy

On Tuesday, March 1, 2016, tragedy struck our community when a trench occupied by three workers collapsed in the 700 block of Main Street. One person was rescued but two others could not be saved. A prolonged recovery effort was required to safely remove the victims from the trench. As we have seen time and again, the community came together to successfully respond to this tragedy with compassion and effectiveness.

The City of Hays 911 Communication Department did an outstanding job is alerting the public safety responders and providing support communications. The City of Hays Police Department would like to thank the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol who quickly responded in support. As always we appreciate the selfless service of Dr. Lyle Noordhoek, our coroner, for his thorough and efficient work. The City of Hays Fire Department would like to thank our partners in the Ellis County Rural Fire Department Company 5 for coming to our aide for this nine hour operation.

The staff of the City of Hays Public Works, Parks and Utilities departments responded with special equipment and additional staff prepared to help with both the rescue and recovery effort. Thank you for this unselfish support.

Others who provided important support include the Ellis County Emergency Manager and the Emergency Managers from Trego, Rooks and Russell counties. The Trego County portable light tower was essential as the work continued after sundown. Fr. Fred Gatschet and Fr Jarett Konrade provided invaluable service. Heartland Building Center responded quickly to our call for additional lumber to help shore-up the trench. The local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Ellis County Emergency Responders Rehab Unit provided encouragement and food and beverages donated by the Dillon’s store and the Arby’s and MacDonald’s restaurants.

Our special appreciation goes out to the staff at the Hays division of APAC. They provided expert assistance and advice and the use of their steel trench box that saved many hours of work during the recovery efforts.

We know that others quietly assisted in various ways unknown to us or that we inadvertently missed in drafting this letter. We thank them for these efforts.

We would especially like to thank the members of the City of Hays Police and Fire departments, the Ellis County EMS paramedics and the members of the Ellis, Rural and Victoria fire departments who help staff the Technical Rescue Team. Their training, professionalism and teamwork in doing the rescue and recovery work was outstanding.

Finally, we appreciate the patience and cooperation of the families who waited while the recovery operation progressed. Our condolences go out to the Jacobs and Pfannenstiel families in their loss.
