Rolland F. ‘Ladd’ Goreham

Rolland Goreham - Paper Picture   Gorham, Kansas – Rolland F. “Ladd” Goreham, age 89, died February 9, 2016, at the Main Street Manor at the Russell Regional Hospital Russell, Kansas.

He was born August 9, 1926, in Yates Center, Kansas, to Floyd R. and Pearl E. (Williams) Goreham. He married Joyce E. (Culver) on June 15, 1948, at Yates Center, Kansas. She died April 5, 2011.

He grew up in Yates Center, Kansas and attended Yates Center High School.  He was a US Army veteran and entered into the service in October 1944, stationed in the Philippines and seeing combat duty he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in September 1946. 

In 1952, he moved to Russell and worked for John O. Farmer Oil Company and Shields Drilling Company. In his later years, he worked for the Rural Gas Service and Holler Electric. He retired in 1992. He moved to Gorham in 1986 and was  a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church Gorham, Kansas and a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post No. 6240. Up until 2011 he mowed the Gorham Senior Center, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Cemetery. 

Rolland was an avid fisherman and bow hunter. He also liked to build and repair boats for himself as well as other people.  It was a family tradition to spend summer weekends and vacations at Cedar Bluff and Lake Wilson, boating and fishing. He and Joyce spent a lot of their retirement fishing at lakes in Kansas and Nebraska.

Survivors include three sons, Roland  E. Goreham and wife, Peggy, Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho; Tim Goreham, Wilmington, CA; Robert Goreham and wife, Judy, Hoisington, KS; two daughters, Rolana Fisk and husband, Neal, Russell, KS; Mary McCartney and husband, Drew, Gorham, KS; one brother, Larry G. Goreham, Hays, KS; one sister, Donna Soverns, Kansas City, MO; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce of 62 years and one grandson, Mark Wagner.
Services are 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 15, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Gorham, Kansas with military honors by the Russell V.F.W. Post No. 6240.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Monday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Gorham, Kansas.

Emoreta P. ‘Emma’ Funk

Mrs. Funk was born December 28, 1929, in Cassville, Missouri, the daughter of Andrew and Loral (Stockton) Carterman. She was a longtime resident of Barton County, Kansas, and Rush County, Kansas, moving to Kansas in 1949 from Missouri. A graduate of Cassville High School, Cassville, Missouri, she received her Bachelor’s Degree from Bolivia College, Springfield, Missouri. She was a teacher and dental assistant before her retirement.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.

On February 7, 1950, she married Herbert W. Funk at Milberger, Kansas. He preceded her in death May 4, 1998.

Survivors include: one daughter in law, Donna Funk, rural Otis, Kansas; three grandchildren, Don Sommers (Sandra), Phillip Funk (Jessica), and Jamie Buehler (Heath); six great grandchildren, Danielle Herl, Amelia Sommers, Gregory Sommers, Christian Funk, Zoey Funk, and Colt Buehler; one great great grandson, Weston Herl; one brother, Roy Carterman, Midwest City, Oklahoma; and one sister, Imogene Kamees, Auburn, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, James L. Funk; an infant child; two brothers, Jacob Carterman, and Joseph Carterman; and one sister, Irene Carterman.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Church visitation will be Friday, February 12, 2016, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Friday, February 12, 2016, at 10:00 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, with Pastor Bruce Adamson officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Township Cemetery, Galatia, Kansas.

Harlie Duane Hahn

Screen Shot 2016-02-11 at 7.56.23 AMHarlie Duane Hahn, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Mr. Hahn was born June 21, 1936 at Burlington, Colorado, the son of Morris E. & Rena (Nickelson) Hahn.

Mr. Hahn graduated from high school in Sharon Springs, KS. He was a rancher/farmer while also working for the railroad in Franktown, CO. Harlie then enjoyed a 33 year career as an aerial spray pilot and owner/operator of Hahn Aerial Spraying in Burlington, CO. Harlie served 6 years in the United States Air Force as a surgical technician.

In his younger years, he rode bulls, bareback and saddleback broncs. Harlie had a true love for music and over the years he taught himself multiple musical instruments, which included guitar, fiddle, bass guitar, accordion, German button box and the piano. He used this special talent as a professional musician in several dance bands. Harlie enjoyed fishing, dancing and learning about his German heritage through his membership of the Edelweiss German Club in Denver, Colorado.

In 1957 he married Donna Jean Towns in Parker, Colorado.

He was born May 6, 1925, in Munjor, Kansas to Peter A. and Amelia (Sander) Hertel. He married Aletha (Leiker) on November 21, 1949 at Munjor, Kansas.

He was a farmer and was a mechanic for 28 years at Fort Hays State University and retired in 1990. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hays, Kansas.

She was born November 25, 1922, on the farm at Emmeram, Kansas, to Alexander “Alex” and Clara (Mermis) Windholz. She married Valentine Francis Weigel on February 18, 1942, at Emmeram, Kansas. He died on December 21,1992.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella both of Gorham, Kansas. Viola was a homemaker, a good cook, a loving mother and grandmother.

ALTON – Marie Peterson, 90, of Alton, KS, died Monday, February 8, 2016, at Parkview Care Center, Osborne, KS.

Mrs. Peterson was born in Kirwin, Kansas on June 4, 1925, the daughter of the late Paul and Bessie (Damon) Stroup.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her son(s): Ron (Jo) Peterson of Alton, Ks., Bill (Virginia) Peterson of Alton, Ks., & Dennis (Sandy) Peterson of Hays, Ks.; sister: Elaine (Bob) Stewart of Fairmont, Minnesota; brother: Richard “Dick” ( Delores) Stroup of Manhattan, Ks.

She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carol in 2012.

Billy W. Armstrong

Billy W. Armstrong, age 88 of Quinter, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016 at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. He was born June 22, 1927 in Ottawa to Sanford and Nettie (Billings) Armstrong.

Bill became a World War II veteran of the United States Merchant Marines after graduation from Quinter High School in 1945. He continued to serve in the Army until 1952. On August 30, 1959, Billy was united in marriage to Dorothy (Ottken/Licata).

He worked as a Postal Clerk for Quinter until mid 1970 and drove truck for Flex King Industry through the 1980s. In retirement, he helped Shaw Motors in Grainfield as a “gofer”. Bill joined in on many fishing, boating, hunting and dances throughout his life. He enjoyed Big Band music, traveling, his second home in Bullhead, Arizona and a hot deck of cards.

Survivors include a son Michael Armstrong, Tulsa, Oklahoma; three daughters, Elaine Sterrett and husband Dick, Quinter, Eileen Ruder and husband Steve, Oakley, Ellen Albers and husband Don, Grinnell; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy; son Eric Armstrong; granddaughter Ashley Ruder; and sister Norma Lanham.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 15, 2016 at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Burial will be in Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

There will be no visitation or viewing as cremation has taken place.

Louis J. Wiesner

Louis J. Wiesner 001Louis J. Wiesner, 95, Hays, died Sunday, February 7, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ellis, Kansas. He lived life to its fullest with a great love for his family, friends, and Catholic faith.

He was born March 8, 1920 in Hays the son of Anna Jacobs and Joseph M. Wiesner. He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy and was employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Company for several years.

He served in World War II as a cannoneer with the 88th Army Infantry Division. He married Catherine A. Wolf on October 7, 1940 in Hays. She died February 6, 2007.

After his discharge, his Grandfather A.A. Wiesner offered him a position as the meat cutter in the family grocery store at 8th and Main in Hays. He enjoyed 40 years creating his own recipes for perfectly seasoned German sausage and raw hamburger. He always served the best cuts of meat to his many customers.

When it was decided to close Wiesner’s Grocery Store, he took a position as the shoe salesman in Wiesner’s Dept. Store. He was a dedicated employee and after his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Catherine, gardening, and woodworking. He rarely missed watching the K.U. basketball team on television. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the third degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, V.F.W. and American Legion.

Survivors include three children, Phillip Wiesner of Hays, Andrew and Dawn Wiesner of Arvada, CO, and Teresa and Glenn Brocker of Arvada, CO, four granddaughters, Amy Brocker of Wheat Ridge, CO, Wendy and Levi Alsobrook of Bullhead City, AZ, Dr. Valerie Wiesner and husband Dr. Alex Kravchenko of Cleveland, Ohio, Dustie Wiesner of Lakewood, CO, a great granddaughter Haley Alley of Bullhead City, AZ, a sister Anita O’Neil of Olney, MD, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son Louis, Jr., his parents, a daughter in law Cheryl Casey Wiesner, his siblings and their spouses, Charles Wiesner, Thomas (Lucy) Wiesner, Mildred (John) Howe, Rita (James) Dreiling, and two brothers in law Joseph Campitell and Paul O’Neil.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 210 W. 13th, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Saturday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil service will be at 6:00 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus Council #1325 rosary, all on Friday at the funeral home.

Ann B. Tedford

Ann B. Tedford, age 92, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on March 22, 1923 in Jetmore, Kansas, the daughter of William Kimmel & Mabel Amelia Ruff Lupfer. She was a resident of Scott City, Kansas from 1956 to 1982 when she moved to Colorado and then back to Scott City, Kansas in 2002.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On May 22, 1943 she married Louis Elwood Tedford in Little Rock, Arkansas. He passed away on July 30, 2001 in Loveland, Colorado.

Survivors include her Two Sons – Stephen L & Betty Jean Tedford of Allenspark, Colorado and Stanley R. & Betsy Tedford of Salem, Massachusetts, One Daughter – Peggy & David Mukai of Bel Air, Maryland, One Brother – William G. & Grace Lupfer of Hanston, Kansas, One Sister – Lois Davis of Salina, Kansas, Seven Grandchildren, Ten Great Grandchildren and Two Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband and One Daughter – Pamela Tedford.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2016 with the Rev. Kyle Evans and Rev. Elwyn Tedford presiding.

Agnes Anna (Holzhauer) Wasinger

Wasinger, Agnes Pic-1Agnes Anna (Holzhauer) Wasinger was born on January 12, 1922 in Palco, KS to Paul and Emma (Keller) Holzhauer. She passed away on February 1, 2016 at the Trego Lemke Memorial Hospital at the age of 94.

Agnes was baptized in the Lutheran faith. She attended grade school in a one-room school house close to the Holzhauer family farm. After graduating from grade school, she attended confirmation school full-time from January to Palm Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ellis, KS. The classes were all taught in German.

After confirmation, Agnes sat out another year to care for her mother at home before attending Palco High School. She graduated with the class of 1941.

On January 16, 1944, Agnes was united in marriage to Henry Deines, Jr. at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Their union was blessed with two sons and a daughter. Henry and Agnes lived most of their married life on the family farm south of Trego Center. Henry preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1977.

In 1984, Agnes married Leonard Wasinger and they resided in WaKeeney. Leonard also preceded her in death in 1997.

Agnes was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Literary Club and the TCLM Hospital Auxiliary.

Agnes was also retired from the Trego-WaKeeney State Bank. She had many hobbies in retirement, especially enjoying her trips to Germany to visit cousins. She gathered and organized genealogy data for the families of her parents – the Kellers and Holzhauers. Agnes enjoyed needlework and quilting. She made over 100 quilts – including gifts for friends and family, quilts for foster children and quilts for Lutheran World Relief. The last quilt she completed was a special gift for her great-grandson Jameson.

Survivors include two sons, Garry (Jan) Deines of Anaheim, CA, and Dennis (Tina) Deines of WaKeeney, one daughter, Gloria Deines of Wichita, KS; four grandchildren, Lisa Deines of Los Angeles, CA, Rachel Deines of Huntington Beach, CA, Paul Deines of Huntington Beach, CA and Christy (Jim) Purcell of Leawood, KS; great-grandson Jameson John Purcell of Leawood, KS; two sisters, Elvera Beiker of Plainville and Bertha Brown of WaKeeney; many nieces and nephews; and the families of Harold and Garold Wasinger.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home.
Private burial will be held before the services.

Helen Dinkel

56b65329c9a60Helen Dinkel, age 89 of Ellis, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. She was born January 18, 1927 in Ellis, Kansas to Frank and Gisela “Marie” ( Schindelar) Lang. She married Benedictus “Ben” Dinkel October 17, 1950 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Colyer, Kansas. He preceded her in death May 18, 2011.

Helen along with her husband owned and operated Dinkel Oil Company which was a Skelly Service Station and bulk fuel delivery business originally located on old highway 40 in Colyer, Ks. When Interstate 70 opened they opened a new Mobile station which they operated until 1989 when they retired and moved to Arizona. She enjoyed cards, trips to Las Vegas and socializing.

She is survived by two brothers, Ben Weisgerber and Teddy Weisgerber; a niece, Dawn Schmidt and husband Greg of Ellis; great niece, Jessica Jimenez and husband Javi of Ellis, great nephew, Tyler Schmidt and wife Ashley of Ellis; great-great nieces and nephews, Trayton, Reece, Chaselyn, Tyson, Chance, Raegan, Carter, Beckem, Beau, Nicole, Tayler, Lilly and Kinley. As well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings and spouses, Clara (Bill) Allison, Benita Harris, Herb (Anna) Weisgerber, Larry (Susie) Weisgerber, Mary Anne (Mark) Snowden, Joan Ewing and Eddie (Jean) Lang and sister-in-law, Nina Weisgerber.
