Robert D. ‘Dale’ Schaffer

Robert D. “Dale” Schaffer, 73, Liebenthal, Kansas, died Friday, January 22, 2016, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

Mr. Schaffer was born January 6, 1943, in Seattle, Washington, the son of Julian Adam and Theresa (Knoll) Schaffer. He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 64 years, moving from Maple Valley, Washington. A 1961 graduate of Schoenchen High School, Schoenchen, Kansas. He was an electrician for Herrman Electric, and later, was a self employed electrician before his retirement.

He was a past Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Council 2340, Liebenthal, Kansas.

He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors include: three daughters, Carla Gish, Salina, Kansas, Carol Schaffer, Hays, Kansas, and Darla Schaffer, Larned, Kansas; five grandchildren, Audrey Jones, Jacey Schaffer, Clayton Gish, Jackie Clark, and Quenten Clark; one brother, Patrick Schaffer, Salina, Kansas; two sisters, Edith Bollig, Lakewood, Colorado, and Judy Kraemer, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant granddaughter, Camryn Gish.

Visitation will be Monday, January 25, 2016, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Church visitation will be Tuesday, January 26, 2016, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Connie L. Ellenberger

Kensington – Connie L. Ellenberger, 69, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Smith County Memorial Hospital, Smith Center, KS.

She was born November 10, 1946 in McMinnville, OR, the daughter of Francis R. and Bonadine (Gibson) Ellenberger.

Connie grew up and lived in Kensington her whole life moving there with her family from Oregon when she was just seven months old. She had worked for several places throughout her life, Prairie Haven Nursing Home in Kensington, Mini Max Bakery and Excel in Smith Center and Long Term Care in Phillipsburg. Even though Connie kept busy working she found time to help take care of her parents and spending as much time as possible with her nieces and nephews.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two brothers, Steve Ellenberger and wife Jan of Smith Center, Ken Ellenberger and wife Wanda of Kensington; two nieces, Shelly Montgomery of Smith Center, Stephanie Spear of Andover, one nephew, Mike Ellenberger and wife Shalyn of Athol, two great nieces, four great nephews and one great great niece.

A celebration of Connie’s life will be announced at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation was chosen. Inurnment will be in the German Town Cemetery, Kensington, KS.

Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and/or Kensington EMS and/or Kensington Senior Center in care of the funeral chapel.

Marvin F. Braun

He was born January 3, 1931 in Victoria, Kansas the son of Frank J. and Helen (Brungardt) Braun. He attended St. Joseph grade school and Hays High School. On August 23, 1950 he married Mary Jo Rohr in Munjor, Kansas. He was a farmer and cattleman and had dairy cows for many years.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, the third degree Knights of Columbus Council #6984, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Marvin was a lifelong farmer who loved the land, his John Deere tractors, and his overalls just as much as he loved his family. He enjoyed spending quiet evenings with his wife, Mary Jo, a beautiful marriage lasting 65 years. He also enjoyed all the noise and laughter in the house when his entire family was gathered together. He was a people person, a kind and generous man, a good provider, and very thankful and prayerful.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo, of the home, daughter Barbara Ciani of Kansas City, MO, son Terence Braun and wife Kathleen of Hays, daughter Susan Leiker and husband Laren of Hays, daughter Debra Pfeifer of Hays, daughter Karla Fisher and husband Duane of Hays, daughter Lisa Thierer and husband Max of Shawnee, daughter in law Cathy Braun of Hays, two brothers Francis “Frank” Braun and wife Jacky of McCracken, and Robert “Bob” Braun and wife Jan of Hays, two sisters, LaVerna Younger of Hays and Helen Werth and husband Cliff of Hays, fifteen grandchildren; Sara Linderman, Keith (Maria) Ciani, Kelly (Jeff) Benoit, Erin (Shawn) Richmeier, Caitlin (Dylan) Sultzer, Travis (Tracy) Braun, Kaleen (Jordan) Munsch, Brad Braun, Chad Braun, Amber (Brett) Marrs, Landon (Lynn) Leiker, Brennan Leiker, Emily Pfeifer, Tyler Legleiter, and Cole Thierer, seventeen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Thomas L. Braun, and a son in law Maurice “Mory” Pfeifer.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:30 Thursday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a combined third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm, both on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Carol Frances Gabel

Carol Frances Gabel, 70, Hays, died Monday, January 25, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas.

She was born December 30, 1945 in Hays the daughter of Edmund and Josephine (Leiker) Gabel. She was a graduate of Hays High School and worked for many years in housekeeping at Hays Medical Center.

She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, Kansas and a member of the Daughters of Isabella in Victoria, Kansas. She loved her dog, watching television, and playing bingo.

Survivors include her cousins, Betty Gamble of Phoenix Arizona and Ellie Gabel and husband Gary of Hays, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters; Twila Weigel and husband Leo and Dorothy Hammerschmidt and husband Marcian.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Munjor. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:30 on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A Victoria Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:00, both on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Russell, Kansas – Diana Marie (Rome) Waldschmidt, age 70, died Sunday, December 13, 2015, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born July 25,1945, in Hays, Kansas to Wilmer J. and Valeria (Wittman) Rome.

She married Ronald J. Waldschmidt on May 14,1966, at Victoria, Kansas.

She grew up in Victoria and attended Victoria High School. She worked at Duckwalls Department Store in Russell for 15 years and was  a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Russell and the St. Fidelis Christian Mothers Altar Society, Victoria.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and her beloved  pets, Molly, Chloe and Cody.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald J. Waldschmidt, of the home; one daughter, Amy Jenkins and husband, Ron, Kansas City, MO; her father, Wilmer J. Rome and Jeanette Brown, Victoria, KS; one brother, Randy Rome and wife, Julie, Landisville, PA; four sisters, Sherri Windholz and husband, Floyd, Victoria, KS; Dorothy Taylor and husband, Leonard, Rapid City, SD; Donna Lovelady and husband, Stan, Plainville, KS; Betty Hansen and Roger Ferland, Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Valeria Rome, and a brother-in-law, Richard Waldschmidt.

A memorial service is at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 30, 2016, at St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church Russell, Kansas.  Inurnment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery  Walker, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at the Church.

James W. ‘Jim’ McDaniel

Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 7.16.58 AMJames W. “Jim” McDaniel, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on December 2, 1923 in Polk, Nebraska, the son of William and Dora Nelson McDaniel. Jim grew up in the farming community of of Edson, Kansas. He moved to Goodland, Kansas following his service commitment and was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1953, he was the owner and operator of McDaniel’s Inc “Firestone” in Scott City, Kansas from 1953 to 2000.

With forty seven years of retail service to the community, Jim became well known to many selling tires, hardware, appliances, sporting equipment, household goods, and even provided a special area for children known as “Toyland” in his store. He was instrumental in construction of the first bleacher press box for the SCHS Football field. Little league baseball and seeing smiles on the faces of children were two of his most prominent passions.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scott City, Kansas and the VFW.

On June 26, 1944 he married Annabelle Zeigler in Goodland, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors include his Wife – Annabelle McDaniel of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – Rob & Lee Ann McDaniel of Benton, Arkansas, One Daughter – Lonnie & Bill Lewis of Scott City, Kansas, Three Sisters – Dorthy Owens of Goodland, Kansas, Bernadine Amos of Grand Junction, Colorado, Marleen Perkall of Grand Junction, Colorado, One Grandson – Ryan & Katie Lewis of Kansas City, Missouri, One Granddaughter – Addie McDaniel of Benton, Arkansas, 2 Great Grandchildren – Aisley & Grayson Lewis of Kansas City, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, One Sister – Shirley Garner and One Granddaughter – Heather Lewis.

Funeral Services will be held at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scott City, Kansas 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 with Fr. Don Martin presiding.

Reid Nicholas O’Brien

Reed O'BrienReid Nicholas O’Brien, 26, Hays, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at his home.

He was born June 10, 1989, in Hays to Rex and Diane (Gasper) O’Brien.

He was a 2008 graduate of Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University, Hesston College and North Central Kansas Technical College, Hays. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, worked in several outdoor occupations, and enjoyed shooting hoops and spending time with his family, especially his brother and his son. He enjoyed playing his guitar, playing all kinds of sports, working with his hands and doing all types of artwork, especially pencil drawing.

Survivors include his parents, Hays; a brother, Drew O’Brien, Hays; a son, Brody Pfannenstiel, Hays; his fiance, Kayla Quenzer, Hays; a lifelong family friend, Randy Gonzales, Hays; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Raymond and LaVerna Gasper and Peter and Leta O’Brien.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday, and from 9:00 am until service time Saturday, all at the church. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Friday at the church.

Betty Jean Susan Madison

phone photos 116Betty Jean Susan Madison was welcomed into the arms of her angel’s Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Rhode Island Suites in Ransom, Kansas.

Betty was one of six children, with five brothers Ralph, Harry, Leroy, Arthur and Clarence, born to Richard Dale and Barbara Rose Pifer Dreiling on 08/13/1939 in Ellis, Kansas.

Betty was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Ellis.

Betty was united in marriage to Robert Dale Ellis in 1958 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. There union was later dissolved. Robert passed away 07/01/1991 in Hays, Kansas.

Betty was united in marriage to Donald Paul Madison on 02/15/1985 in Utica, Kansas. The couple made their home in Blue Springs, Missouri until 2005 when they moved to Ransom to be close to her children. Donald passed away 10/10/2013 at Ransom, Kansas.

Betty was the mother of seven children Betty Sue, Dwain Dee, Daniel Francis, Richard Dale, Maureen Deborah, Sirena Yvonne and Kimberly Ann. Betty proudly boasted 20 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and was anticipating the arrival of 2 great great grandchildren.

Betty enjoyed her family, sharing many memories and making new ones with each visit. Her family photographs and holiday greetings were always proudly displayed in her suite. She had several collections of angels, crosses, and kittens that were among her favorites.

She is survived by her children Betty S. Harris (Tom), Chanute, Kansas, Dwain D. Ellis, Daniel F. Ellis both of Ellis, Maureen D Ellis Hartman Phillips, of Russell, Sirena Ellis Schneider (Michael) of WaKeeney, and Kimberly A. Ellis Rider of Ransom, 20 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her brothers Ralph, Harry (Debra), Clarence (Diane) all of Ellis and Leroy of Lyons, Kansas.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Arthur, one son, Richard, and her husband Donald.

Her family will gather for a celebration of her life, Saturday January 23, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis at 3:00 p.m. Followed by a Reception at The Knights of Columbus also in Ellis.

Her inurnment of ashes will complete her wishes and be placed with Donald’s at Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas.

Norbert J. ‘Bones’ Prosser

1735088_profile_picNorbert J. “Bones” Prosser, 85, died Jan. 18, 2016, at Via Christi Village – Hays, in Hays. Born Feb. 10, 1930, in Beaver, he was the son of Joseph and Ella (Ficker) Prosser. On Sept. 8, 1955, he married Frances Werner in Odin. She survives. A lifetime resident of Odin, he was a farmer and rancher. His past careers include welding, tank truck service, oilfield driller, and dirt construction. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, trapper, and collector of priceless memorabilia. He took great pride in founding the Prosser Arena and had a passion for planting shelter belts.

Bones was veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus Council #2630, both of Odin, and the American Legion Post 200, Holyrood. He was a long standing board member of Beaver Grain.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Prosser, of the home; two sons, Abe Prosser and wife Nona and Zack Prosser and wife Melissa, both of Odin; two daughters, Vicki Kaiser and husband Bob and Missi Prosser, both of Odin; two brothers, Robert Prosser of Kalispell, Mont. and Alvin “Shorty” Prosser of Russell; eight grandchildren, Johnathon Kaiser, Emilee DeMartino and husband Victor, Joshua Kaiser, April Kaiser, Amanda Prosser and Sean Finn, Cameren Prosser, Isaac Prosser, and Zane Prosser; and two great-grandchildren, Victor DeMartino and Samuel DeMartino. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe D. and Barney Prosser.

Vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, January 22, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Interment will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Odin, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Holy Family Cemetery Fund or Claflin Ambulance Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Lonnie Ann (Warner) Munk

Lonnie Ann (Warner) Munk, 69, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016, surrounded by her loved ones, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Lonnie was born December 31, 1946 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Hugh and Gladys Warner.  Her mother died at an early age, and Hugh “Pop” married Dorothy “Corkey”.  She grew up in Edinburg, Texas and graduated from Smiley High School in Houston, Texas.

Lonnie was united in marriage to the love of her life, Clyde Munk, on March 6, 1970 in Houston, Texas.  They made their home in Russell County.  Clyde preceded her in death on July 27, 1992.

Lonnie worked at the Hays Medical Center for almost 25 years, working mainly in Admissions.  She was the co-owner of the Gorham Café during the 1970’s.  She also worked in the Gorham convenience store and was a waitress at the Elks Lodge in Russell.  Lonnie will be remembered for her unwavering strength, zest for life and the tremendous love she had for her family. She was a hard working woman who enjoyed gardening, lawn work, doing crafts, reading and puzzles.  She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Gorham and the Daughter’s of Isabella.

Lonnie will live on in the hearts of her daughter, Kelly Reddig (Eric) of Russell, Kansas; her son, Jeff Scarborough (Kris) of Russell, Kansas; four grandchildren, Jessica Stoppel (Blake) of Salina, Lucas Munk Scarborough (Katie) of Russell, Kylie Reddig and Hunter Reddig of Russell; and two great grandchildren, Elijah Munk Scarborough and Daxton Munk Scarborough of Russell; four brothers, Hugh Warner, Jr. (Nadine) of Humble, Texas, Frank Warner (Donna) of LaVernia, Texas, Edward Warner (Julie) of Hoschton, Georgia and Wayne Cockrill of Bellaire, Texas; sisters, Joy Estrada of Katy, Texas, Kathy Holley (Woody) of Kansas City, Missouri; brother-in-law, Charlie Munk (Verna) of Gorham: sisters-in-law, Carol Price of Abilene, Kansas, Corine Gideon (Darold) of Russell, Kansas, Carlotta Lyons (Jeff) of Leavenworth, Kansas, Cyndi Dugan of Dubois, Wyoming, and Kate Debes (John) of Hoisington, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lonnie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers; Forrest Warner, Kenneth Warner, and Jimmy Cockrill; two sisters, Dorothy Miller, and June Black; and niece, Megan Escalante.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 25, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gorham.  Burial of Ashes will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Gorham.  Family will be greeting friends from 9:00 AM to Service time at the Church on Monday. Pamela Elizabeth Loy

Screen Shot 2016-01-20 at 1.12.07 PMPamela Elizabeth Loy, 72, recent resident of Lucas, Kansas and former resident of Lacon, Illinois, died at her daughter’s home in Lucas, Kansas, with her two daughters Joan and Janette by her side.

Pamela was born on November 29, 1943, in Centralia, Illinois, the daughter of Daniel and Charlotte E. (Hull) Nye.  She grew up in Casper, Wyoming and graduated from Natrona County High School in the class of 1964.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Fred B. Ryan on March 11, 1961 in Casper, Wyoming.  From this union they were blessed with 3 children Janette, James, and Joan.  Fred preceded her in death on November 04, 1999.  Pamela was fortunate to find love a second time and was united in marriage to Robert V. “Bob” Loy on July 30, 1983 in Lacon, Illinois.  He preceded her in death on January 11, 2016.  She worked as a Certified Public Account and was the owner and operator of the “Dime Store” and eventually established the Antique Store.  She and Bob loved traveling and shopping for antiques and loved playing bridge with friends.  One of their favorite past times was to take short road trips to put a $20.00 bill in the “Gold Fish” slot machine.  She was a member of the Church of Christ and volunteered for many of the church activities.  She also enjoyed collecting dolls and loved spending time quilting and researching family genealogy.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her husband and family, and she especially loved spending time with her many grandchildren and extended grandchildren.

Surviving family include her two daughters Janette Mitchell and Husband Jeff of San Antonio Texas, and Joan Pool and husband Frank of Lucas, Kansas; sisters Patricia Stewart and husband Rick of San Antonio, Texas and Nancy Mason and husband Jerry of Casper, Wyoming; grandchildren Lacey (David) Soukup, Wendi Pool, Brandon Pool, Tracy, Kelcy, Morgan, Teagan, Max, Wes, Carl, Elizabeth, Chad and Rebecca Loy.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob V. Loy and first husband Fred B. Ryan; son James “Jim” Ryan; grandson James M. Ryan and stepmother Evelyn (McCoskrie) Loy.

A private family gathering to honor Pamela’s life will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Solomon Valley Hospice in Beloit KS and sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary * 610 N. Donald Edmond Miser Jr.

Donald Edmond Miser Jr., age 36, of WaKeeney, died Friday, January 15, 2016, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. He was born April 23, 1979, in Wasco, California, to Donald Edmond Miser, Sr and Martha Mae Pool.

Donald is survived by three children, Frankie, Isaiah, and Lalani; a sister, Tonya Lee McClain of Oklahoma; a stepsister, Kimberly Ann Drake of Arkansas; and his parents.

Memorial services will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation as his body was cremated.
