Carolyn R. Holle

Agra, Kansas, resident Carolyn R. Holle, age 81, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Phillips County Health Systems in Phillipsburg.

Carolyn was born January 1, 1934, in Decatur County, Kansas the daughter of William E. & Ruth (Kipple) Soderlund.

She was united in marriage to Vern Holle on August 24, 1958, in Oberlin, KS. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2010.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean Ann Wagner & husband Stan of Phillipsburg; 2 grandchildren, Eric of Manhattan, KS and Kristin of Wichita; and a brother, Bill Soderlund of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 with Pastor Lee Bennight officiating.  Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery.

Mrs. Holle will lie in state from Noon until 9 P.M. Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Ronald Selensky

Selensky, Ron Pic croppedRonald Selensky, age 71, of Quinter, passed away, Thursday, December 17, 2015 at University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City. He was born December 25, 1943, in rural Gove County, to Adam Fred and Clara Marie (Ziegler) Selensky.

Ron was a 1962 graduate of Park High School. He was united in marriage on January 23, 1965, in Park, to Iona Phyllis Goetz. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage together. Ron was an area farmer and rancher most of his life. He and family worked tireless hours keeping up with the daily life of raising crops and tending to the cattle. His dedication and work ethic were known by many. Ron was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Park. He earned the distinction of 3rd Degree Knight. He was an avid hunter of most any game, enjoyed trapshooting, and was a member of the NRA. Ron was a dedicated sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching and following baseball and basketball. For over 35 years, he volunteered his time keeping score at basketball games for Wheatland High School. He loved to collect coins. One of his favorite activities was getting together with family, especially during the Christmas season. He absolutely cherished his children and grandchildren. Ron was respected and loved as a husband, a father, a grandfather, and as a friend by many.

Survivors include his wife, of the family home; two sons, Curtis and wife Teresa, and Kelly and wife Jynette, all of Park; two daughters, Lynn and husband Chris Schrader of Benkelman, Nebraska, and Julie and husband Tim Hall of Dodge City; daughter-in-law, Cassie Selensky of Park; fourteen grandchildren, Gavin, Kendrik, and Samuel Selensky, Carter and Breckyn Selensky, Kasha and Kamie Rash, and Tallan Schrader, Chelsie and Nicole Hall, and Blake, Carson, Kelsey and Cole Selensky; a brother, Robert Selensky of Grainfield; and two sisters, Vivian Goetz of Dodge City, and Virginia Wessel of Grainfield. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Greg; a brother, Norbert; a brother-in-law, Bob Wessel; and a sister-in-law, Sheila Selensky.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Park. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00, with a parish vigil service beginning at 7:00, all at the funeral home in Quinter.

Nellie Frances Wittman

Nellie Frances Wittman, age 90, passed away at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas on Thursday, December 17, 2015.

She was born on January 4, 1925 in Melbourne, Australia, the daughter of Alfred and Mary Ellen (Downie) Tite.

On December 30, 1942, she married Wilbert Wittman Sr. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1987.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Allen) Lawson, Bazine, KS; sons, Bud (Diane) Wittman, Bazine, KS, Jim (Brenda) Wittman, Lubbock, TX, David (Malinda) Wittman, Alvin, TX, and Russ (Tawnya) Wittman, Sedalia, MO and a daughter-in-law, Patty Wittman, Ness City, KS

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbert; son Dan Wittman; and grandson, John Wright.

A private memorial service will be at a later date.

Marietta Koerner

5675c22531f72Marietta Koerner, age 79, of Hays passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 at Via Christi Village in Hays. She was born October 12, 1936 in Hays, Kansas to George and Barbara (Gassman) Younger. She attended school in Hays and graduated from Hays High in 1955. She married Alfred “Fritz” Koerner Jr. on November 18, 1957 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays.

Marietta was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays. She was talented artistically and enjoyed ceramics and crafting. She was most of all an unconditionally loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Alfred “Fritz” Koerner of Hays, three daughters and spouses, Deborah and Kenneth Bush of Russell, Kansas, Lisa and Virgil Leiker and Amy and Rick Linenberger all of Hays; a sister, Katie Bitter of Ellinwood, Kansas; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great granddaughter, Autumn Brianna Whittaker; four sisters, Cecilia Pfannenstiel, Virginia Engel, Zita Stadelman and Helen Staab as well as three brothers, Walter Younger, Bal Younger and Joseph Younger.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 6 PM – 8 PM with a combined rosary and vigil service at 6:30 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Bernard F. Baker

Bernard F. Baker, 83, of Colby, died Sunday, December 20, 2015. He was born June 7, 1932 to Anton and Caecilia (Baier) Baker in Wichita County. He married Theresa Birzer of Sept 19 1957 at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in North Ellinwood. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed traveling. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Louis; six sisters, Bernadine Pahls, Margarite Zellner, Florence Zellner, Elizabeth Geyer, Mary Ann and Winter Celine Wimmer.

He is survived by his wife Theresa of the home; five children, Ronald Baker, of Winona, Kevin (Christine) Baker, of Grand Island, NE, Stacey (Sa Myra) Baker, of Bonner Springs, Denise (Scott) Gambill, of Lenexa and Eric (Roxanne) Baker, of Colby; a brother, Joe (Virginia) Baker, of Haddem; two sisters, Millie (Gerald) Smith, of Marienthal and Nellie (Clyde) Scheffe, of Marienthal; nine grandchildren, Mitchell Baker, Kyra Baker, Tyler Baker, Lexi Gambill, Lakin Gambill, Sabina Gambill, Garrett Baker, Simma Baker and Jennifer Baker.

Laura Morgan Stroup

She was born September 16, 1988 in Hays to Anthony D. Stroup and Marilyn M. (Edwards) Engel. She was a 2007 graduate of Hays High School where she was active in volleyball and softball and was a National DECA winner.

After graduation, she attended Biola University, La Mirada, Calif., and Fort Hays State University majoring in marketing.

She is survived by her father, Anthony Stroup and wife Marla of Hays; her mother, Marilyn Engel and husband Bruce of Hays; three brothers, Lee Stroup of Kansas City, MO, Landon Stroup of Breckenridge, CO and Layton Stroup of Hays; a step brother, Bradley Pendergast of Hays; three step sisters, Sarah Mohr of Norcatur, KS, Rachel Pendergast of Hays and Katelyn Engel of Hays; grandmothers, Mary Jo Stroup and Neva Edwards both of Hays.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Lyle Stroup and Clifford Edwards.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Celebration Community Church in Hays. Private family burial will follow in St. Joseph cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Wednesday visitation will be 10 AM until service time at the church.

Bobby Wayne Harger passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Willard Walker Hospice Home, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was a former WaKeeney, Kansas resident. He was born on October 16, 1933, to the late Orval L. and Florence V. (Melinch) Harger, in Quinter, Kansas.

On December 20, 1956, he married Rita LaVerne Vankirk, in Chicago, Illinois. She precedes him in death. Bobby served in the United States Army, and was stationed in St. Andre, France. He was attached to the 101st Airborne Division. Bobby was a proud veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Garry (Susie) of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and James (Ferol) of Rogers, Arkansas; two daughters, Julie (David) Skach of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Nancy Bailey of Checotah, Oklahoma; one grandchild, Jordan Havens; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Seth and Rune Havens. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Floyd Harger; and a sister, Joyce Jamison.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney. Military honors will be presented by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. There will be no visitation.

Thomas Larry Lovewell

Thomas Larry Lovewell passed away Sunday, December 13 at Village Place Nursing and Rehab, Port Charlotte, FL.

Tom was born June 17, 1936 in Lovewell, KS the son of Thomas W. and Mildred (Ballard) Lovewell. He graduated 1954 from Dodge City High School and received a BA in English from Kansas State University after serving in the US Navy as a communications specialist.
On December 1, 1961 he married Norma Jean (McMillan) Aborn, widow, in Miami, OK. Subsequently, on July 13,1973, he married Anneliese (Bohn) Reinert in Port Charlotte, FL.

He was a journalist and worked for several Kansas newspapers, including, the Bonner Springs Chieftain, the McPherson Sentinel, as district editor for the Salina Journal and later for the Topeka Capital-Journal. In Florida, the Punta Gorda Harold and retired after serving as the editor of the Labelle, FL newspaper. In retirement, he enjoyed working for Walmart, Punta Gorda, FL, in the fishing and hunting department, which was a life-long passion.

Survivors include his wife of the home, three sons, Orrin Lovewell and wife Becky, Olathe, KS, Bill Lovewell and wife Lori, Hays, KS, Tom Lovewell and wife Robin, Hays, KS, and step-son Edward Reinert and wife April, Port Charlotte, FL, and four daughters, Rhonda ‘Susie’ Lovewell, Bethany, LA, Dawn Gabel and husband Alan, Lake Quivira, KS, Prairie Lovewell, Olathe, KS, Jane Young and husband Mike, Hays, KS, and step-daughter Donna Reinert and fiancé James Swanger, Port Charlotte, FL and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife.

Larry J. Dennis

Kensington resident Larry J. Dennis passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at Phillips County Health Systems in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 74.

Larry was born Feb. 13, 1941 in Phillips County to Harold & Iva Mae (Goracke) Dennis.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of the home in Kensington; three sons: Jeff, Jason and Jeremy Dennis, all of Kensington; his sisters, Sharon Rust of Kensington and Carol Lare of Edgerton, KS; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Heartland Worship Center, Agra, KS, with Pastor Jonathan Gibson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Stone Cemetery, Smith County, KS.

Mr. Dennis will lie in-state on Saturday & Sunday from noon – 9 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family receiving friends Sunday evening from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Armina Graff ‘Tiny’ Palkowitsh

Armina Graff “Tiny” Palkowitsh, age 89 of Lilburn, GA, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Josephine (Werth) Graff; and her husband of 33 years, Anthon Leonard “Tony” Palkowitsh.

She is survived by a son, Marcus Palkowitsh of Denver, CO; daughter, Mindy Crean (John) of Lilburn, GA; 4 grandchildren, Kevin Crean (Amanda) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Mary Shutter (Nathan) of Flowery Branch, GA, Leslie Wellborn (Trae) of Madison, GA and Lauren Crean of Paris, France; 4 great grandchildren, Kate and Jack Crean, both of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and Declan and Rowan Schutter both of Flowery Branch, GA.

Tiny married Tony Palkowitsh on November 9, 1942 in Monterey, CA. She lived in Wichita County, Kansas, for 53 years where she attended St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. She was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Leoti VFW, and the Kansas Association of Girl Scouts.

During her married life she was a member of the “CowBelles” of the Kansas Cattleman Association. She enjoyed gardening and cooking large family meals. Later she moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where she lived for 26 years. While in Ft. Collins she was a member of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church and its bible study group, and was a member of the Ft. Collins S.W.A.P. Club, Friends of the Library, and Larimer County Historical Society. She moved to Lilburn, GA, 9 years ago and began attending St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church. She was a loving mother, and a terrific grandmother, and adoring great grandmother.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 18, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 5373 Wydella Road, Lilburn, GA with Reverend Brian T. Lorei officiating. The Vigil for the deceased will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2015 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM at Tom M. Wages, Snellville Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, December 21, 2015 at Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.

Donald M. Pfannenstiel

Donald M. Pfannenstiel photo 001Donald M. Pfannenstiel, 63, Munjor, died Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at his home.

He was born January 7, 1952 in Cambridge, Nebraska the son of Melvin and Betty Lou (Rohr) Pfannenstiel. After graduating High School and attending Fort Hays State University, he entered the U.S. Navy and served for over eight years in the U.S. Navy submarine force.

After his service in the Navy, he was a nuclear power engineer with Entergy Corporation in Louisiana for many years until returning home.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor, the third degree Knights of Columbus in Munjor, and the American Legion. He enjoyed playing golf, working in his shop, and was very giving in donating to numerous organizations. He was very smart and talented and learned to pilot hot air balloons and had a cabin at a deer camp in Louisiana.

Survivors include his mother, Munjor, a sister Karen Mondero and husband John of Hays, a step brother Roger Loesch of Hays and a step sister Terri Rogers and husband Sandy of Newton, Kansas, aunts and uncles; Rene Chidester and husband Ken of Salt Lake City, UT, Lee Rohr of Munjor, Chuck Rohr of Mount Dora, FL, Al Rohr and wife Alice of Mission, TX, Mary Jo Braun and husband Marvin of Hays, a niece Jessica Albers and husband Bobby of Munjor, and nephews Matt Mondero of Oberlin, and Joe Mondero and wife Becca of Oberlin, and his canine companion, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his father Melvin in 1953, two aunts Claire Unrein and Calysta Rohr, and a nephew Lucas Mondero.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor.  Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Honor Guard and Hays American Legion Riders will be in the St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am until 9:30, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. A parish vigil will be at 7:00 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all on Friday at the funeral home.
