Caryl A. Schukman

Phillipsburg resident, Caryl A. Schukman, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 94.

She was born in Norton County, KS on Nov. 21, 1921, the daughter of Clay & Fay (Underwood) Davis. Her husband, L.J. “Bud” Schukman, and sons, Jay and Gail Dee, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Alan, of Crystal River, FL; her daughters, Lynette Hammond, of Long Island, KS and Valette Wolf, of Gardner, KS; 7 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Reva Rogers, of Springfield, MO.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Long Island United Methodist Church, Long Island, KS, with Pastor Ted Stapleton officiating. Private family burial will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena, KS.

Mrs. Schukman will lie in-state at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, on Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 5 – 9 p.m. and again Thursday, Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Doris Koehn

Lifelong WaKeeney resident Doris Koehn passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015, at her home. She was 77 years of age. Doris was born July 5, 1938, in WaKeeney, to Paul George and Katharine (Pastor) Schemm.

Doris was a 1957 graduate of Trego Community High School. On August 12, 1957, Doris was united in marriage to Weldon Dean Koehn, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, near Ogallah. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage together, until Weldon’s death on October 26, 2003. They owned and operated Mi-T Mart Convenience Store and Koehn’s Wholesale Ice. Doris also was a mail carrier, worked at Mai’s Locker Plant, and was owner and operator of D & W Laundromat. She had many other small jobs too numerous to mention, but what she truly loved was her children, grandchildren, and spending time in her kitchen.

Survivors include three sons, Darren Dean and wife Lisa, Terence LeRoy and wife Shawna, and Weldon Dean, Jr., all of WaKeeney; three grandchildren, Jordan Lee, Tessa Adrian, and Avery Smone; and two sisters, Helen Zeigler and Ruth Nollette. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Aaron Dean Koehn; five brothers, Herman, August, Leo, Richard, and Tom Schemm; and a sister, Esther Pearson.

Graveside services and burial will be in the WaKeeney City Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Dorothy P. (Dinges) Burkart

Dorothy P. (Dinges) Burkart, age 92, of Hays passed away November 22, 2015 at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas. She was born August 28, 1923 in Hays, Kansas to Nick L. and Julia (Smith) Dinges.

Dorothy served in the Navy and was a WWII veteran. She was a lifetime resident of Hays and she enjoyed traveling, and loved Big Band music.

She is survived by a son, Thomas H. (Darlene) Burkart of Pueblo, CO; two grandsons, Kevin C. Burkart of Watkins, CO and Cody J. Steffen of Gladstone, MO; three great grandchildren, Carly Jo, Dalton C. and Riley J. Burkart; one great-great grandchild, Kingsley Steffen and two brothers, William and Norman Dinges of Broomfield, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven F. Burkart; a daughter, Linda C. (Burkart) Steffen; a grandson, Clayton M. Burkart; four brothers, Adrian, Howard, Leroy and Charles Dinges; two sisters, Norma Jean (Dinges) Harris and infant, Charlotte.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse and to Dan Steffen and Melea Kraemer for all their love, compassion and support for the past two plus years.

Eugene Berning, age 89, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Eugene was born April 20, 1926 on the Berning family homestead near Marienthal, Kansas, the son of Anthony John & Hilda Louise (Simons) Berning. A lifetime resident of Wichita County, Kansas, he was a farmer and businessman.

Eugene was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both in Marienthal, Kansas. He enjoyed being an active member of his Church; serving as a song leader helped fulfill and express his love of music. Also, being on the Church Finance and Building committees, gave him an avenue to give glory to God in being a part of the building of the current Church in Marienthal, Kansas. His love and passion for new challenges found an outlet in carpentry, new projects and making something once old, renewed and useful.

On November 21, 1951, Eugene married the love of his life, Marguerite Biel at Marienthal, Kansas.

Paul James Shafer, age 85, passed away on Sunday. December 6, 2015 at Greeley County Hospital LTC in Tribune, Kansas. Paul was born January 11, 1930 in Isabel, Kansas, the son of John & Hazel E. (Brooks) Shafer. A resident of Greeley County since 1939, he was a farmer and stockman.

Paul was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, had served as a former Greeley County Commissioner for twenty-two years, and was on the CO-OP and FSA Board of Directors.

On June 2, 1948 he married Bernice M. Kleymann in Wichita County, Kansas. Bernice passed away on August 2, 1984 at Kansas City, Kansas. On October 27, 1988 he married Judy Frazer Eaves in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mildred Schmidt

Mrs. Schmidt was born December 25, 1911, in Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of Philip and Cora (Rarick) Saxman. She was a long time resident of Rush County, Kansas, moving there from Portland, Indiana. A 1930 graduate of Deerfield High School in Indiana, she was a farm wife before her retirement.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and WELCA, both of La Crosse, Kansas; and Friendly Neighbors.
On June 9, 1943, she married William G. Schmidt. He preceded her in death October 9, 1969.
Survivors include: many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; and four sisters.

Church visitation will be Monday, December 7, 2015, from 10:00 A.M. to 10:50 A.M. at the First Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Dorothy (Kinderknecht) Waldman

3512288_wlppLifelong Park resident Dorothy (Kinderknecht) Waldman passed away, Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. She was 89 years of age. Dorothy was born January 28, 1926, in rural Sheridan County, near Park, to Alex and Anna (Bollig) Kinderknecht.

Dorothy was united in marriage to William Waldman, on September 21, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage together, until his death in 2001. Dorothy dedicated a good portion of her life to her church. She was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society in Park. She was baptized, received her first communion, confirmed, and married in the church. She loved life on the farm with her husband, farming, and raising cattle. Dorothy always put out a large vegetable garden to provide for her family. What was not consumed fresh during the growing season was canned for the winter months. She cherished her time spent with family and friends. Dorothy will be dearly missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Darrell and wife Connie, and James and wife Barbara, all of Goodland; one daughter, Diane and husband David Steerman of Wamego; five grandchildren, Hollie Waldman, Joni (Jeff) Denton, Jason Waldman, Robin (Steve) York, and Travis Steerman; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Bradley, Corey, Emily, and Gregory York; two brothers, Robert and Charles Kinderknecht; and two sisters, Esther Mader and Thelma Wildeman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, William Dean Waldman, brothers, Julius, Eugene, Marvin, Cletus, and Virgil; and three infant sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday evening, from 5 to 7, with a rosary at 6:30, at the funeral home in Quinter.

Ory J. Petersilie

Ory J. Petersilie, 78, Otis, Kansas, died Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mr. Petersilie was born April 19, 1937, in rural Ness County, Kansas, the son of Charles W. and Pearlie Ann (Reynolds) Petersilie. He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 41 years, moving there from Barton County, Kansas. He worked in the maintenance department at Superior Essex, Hoisington, Kansas, before his retirement.

He was a member of the Southwest Kansas Antique Engine and Thresher Association, and a founding member of Otis Old Iron Days, Otis, Kansas.

On January 16, 1971, he married Sheila M. Kultgen at Great Bend, Kansas. She preceded him in death June 20, 2010.

Survivors include: three daughters, Suzanne Randa (Dermot), La Crosse, Kansas, Angela Petersilie (Derrick Schmitz), Sparta, Missouri, and Le Ann Petersilie, Otis, Kansas; four grandchildren, James “Jamie” Bunting, Michael Resseguie, Jordan Schmitz, Mason Schmitz; three great grandchildren, Ewan Bunting, Amelia Bunting, and Everton Steadman III; and one sister, Wanda LaBonte, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Richard Kirby Petersilie; three brothers, Charles Petersilie, Floyd Petersilie, and Art Petersilie; and five sisters, Ida Wennick, Edith Dewberry, Dana Rees, Arlene Riegle, and Barbara Schumacher.

Kyle Jon Kuhn, 23, Hays, died Saturday, December 5, 2015 at his home in Hays due to a medical condition.
He was born November 22, 1992 in Hays the son of Rick and Ruth (Basgall) Kuhn.

He was gifted in art and was an excellent dart player and a very avid disc golfer. He also excelled at golf. He won several dart tournaments, disc golf tournaments and golf tournaments. He was a member of the Hays Dart League and was also a very skilled hip-hop dancer. He possessed a huge heart and was always willing to help anyone in any way he could. He left a memorable impression on everyone he met. He accomplished everything he set his mind to and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Ruth Kuhn of Hays, a brother Kevin Kuhn and wife Crystal of Hays, maternal grandfather Vern Basgall of Hays, paternal grandmother Donna Kuhn of Hays, several aunts and uncles and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rick Kuhn, maternal grandmother Betty Basgall, and paternal grandfather Ervin Kuhn.

Kyle lived his life the way he wanted to and it was to the fullest. To quote him, “we’re here for a good time, not a long time.”

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays. Burial will follow in the LaCrosse City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 until 7:30 pm and on Saturday from 12:00 noon until 12:45 pm, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

Harlen E. Graul

Ogallah, Kansas – Harlen E. Graul, age 85, died Sunday, December 6, 2015, at his home.

He was born February 14, 1930, in Madrid, Nebraska to Leonard R. and Marvel (Dalton) Graul. He married LaQuita (Spena) on June 12, 1949, in Dodge City, Kansas.

He was retied from the US Air Force and was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, LaQuita Graul; two sons, Brian Graul and Deron Graul; and two granddaughters, Gretchen Crawford and Lilly Graul.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Cheryl Graul.

There will be a private family memorial service and inurnment at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Trego County Hospital Endowment Foundation Inc.
