He was born September 23, 2014 in Hays the son of Bryan R. and Courtney S. (Hughes) Brady. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and he loved his brother and sister, the outdoors and music. He spread joy to everyone he met and was quick to share his sweet demeanor and smile.

Survivors include his parents, Hays, a brother Jake Brady and a sister Josie Brady, both of Hays, grandparents Charlie and Susie Hughes of Olathe and Bob and Jana Brady of Johnson, Kansas, great grandmother Marjorie Nairn of Johnson, KS, aunts and uncles, Aaron and Rebecca Brady and Kelly Brady, all of Hays and Kyle and Kyla Brady of Amarillo, TX, and cousins Jackson Brady of Amarillo and Evan Brady of Hays.

He was preceded in death by a great grandfather Archie Nairn, great grandparents Cap and Milly Bremer, Chub and Nada Hughes, and J.R. and Eleanor Brady.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, October 26, 2015 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday and from 9:00 am until service time, all at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, both on Sunday at the church.

Pauline G. Sander

Pauline Sander-Paper PictureBoonville, MO. — Pauline G. Sander, age 102, former Victoria, Kansas resident, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Lakeview Nursing Center in Boonville, MO.

She was born August 8, 1913, in Liebenthal, Kansas to Frank L and Anna Marie (Riedel) Herman. She married S.A. “Tony” Sander on September 20, 1948 in Victoria, Kansas. He died on December 9, 1972.

She worked in doctors offices, St. John’s Nursing Home and lived on the farm northwest of Victoria. She attended grade school and high school in Spearville, Kansas. After the death of her husband she moved to Victoria in 1972 and was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. In 2005 she and her daughter moved to Boonville, Missouri to be with her son and daughter-in-law.

Survivors include her son, Joe Sander and wife, Mona, her daughter, Verline Sander, all of Boonville, MO; four grandchildren, Jason Sander and wife, Lindsay, Pflugerville, TX; Troy Sander and wife, Kim, Cedar Park, TX; Amy Rapp and husband, Chris, Morgan Keys and husband, Josh, all of Boonville, MO; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Wilbert Herman and Leonard Herman; and two sisters, Lydia Sander and Leona Heimerman.

Services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 26, 2015 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service will be at 6:00 P.M. Sunday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Nancy Ann McDermed

Lifelong Phillipsburg resident Nancy Ann McDermed passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS at the age of 78.

She was born August 29, 1937 in Phillipsburg the daughter of William Eugene & Doris Marie (Atkins) Tackwell.
She was united in marriage to Roy F. “Frank” McDermed on May 19, 1957 in Phillipsburg, KS. He preceded her in death on January 13, 2013.

Survivors include her 5 daughters, Peggy Fabin & husband, Tom, Marla McDermed, Connie Capps & husband, Melvin, Kelli Brandon & husband, Jack, & Kandi McDermed all of Phillipsburg; a brother, Bill Tackwell & wife, Dee of Hastings, NE; sister Vickie Barg & husband, Loren of Lincoln, NE; 6 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2015 at the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg with Jay Brandon officiating.

Tony ‘Red’ Pfeifer Jr.

Tony Red Pfeifer JrTony “Red” Pfeifer Jr., 83, Hays, died Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at his home following a lengthy illness of Parkinson’s disease. 

He was born December 1, 1931 in Hays to Tony and Regina (Beilman) Pfeifer.  He married Geraldine Brull September 10, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Church in Hays. He graduated from Hays High School in 1951 and from Fort Hays State University with a Masters and a Specialist degree.

He was drafted into the United States Army S.C.A.R.W.A.F. in October of 1952 from Tifton, Georgia, where he was playing professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals farm club. After completing basic training and constructional engineer training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he was shipped overseas and spent one year with Company B, 840th Engineer Battalion on an inspection team and traveled all over Korea and Japan. Corporal (E-4) Pfeifer received the United States Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, with Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.  In August 1954, he received a medal and honorable discharge at Camp Carson, Colorado, and was transferred into the Army Reserve until 1959.

He taught and coached in the Victoria Schools 32 years and 1 year at Hays Middle School.  In addition to his family and students, he loved baseball and music.  He played baseball for the Hays Larks and the Victoria Eagles.  He played the accordion and founded The Pfeifer Dance Band, entertaining at many weddings and parties.  After retiring, he and his father-in-law provided musical entertainment for senior citizens.

He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion and the NEA.
He is survived by his wife of the home and five sons:  Anthony (Karla Reed), Tim (Karen) Terry(Cathy), Danny, Dave (Kristen); nine grandchildren:  Nathan, Nicholas, Samie, Abby (Ryan), Ryan J., Anna, Isabelle, Tanner, Caleb; and one great-granddaughter, Ella Rose Pfeifer; two brothers:  Norman “Raschi”, Hays, Ken (Sharon), Phoenix; two sisters:  Harriet (Wes) Nicholson, Topeka and Betty Lou Rife, Denver and a special caregiver Sister Rita.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters:  Agnes (Hilly) Schumacher and Mary (Ed) Geist.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 on Friday, October 23, 2015 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th, Hays.  Burial with military honors will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 am until service time Friday, all at the church.  A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the church.

Murl Loyd Eitel

Murl Loyd Eitel, age 91, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on January 2, 1924 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of Murl and Caroline Geist Eitel. A lifetime Scott City resident, he was a farmer and a US Navy Veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the VFW of Scott City, Kansas.

On August 18, 1944 he married Willidean “Deanie” Burkhead in Scott City, Kansas. She passed away on November 3, 2006 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include Four Sons – Dan & Claudette Eitel of Hardy, Arkansas, Curtis Eitel of Scott City, Kansas, Vick & Sandy Eitel of Scott City, Kansas, Rod & Sue Eitel of Scott City, Kansas, Three Daughters – Karen & Dale Holterman of Scott City, Kansas, Connie Ramsey of Scott City, Kansas, Tammy Otterstetter of Pen Rose, Colorado, One Sister – Shirley Rempe of Roswell, New Mexico, Twenty One Grandchildren and Twenty Nine Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, One Daughter – Nixie Ann Eitel, One Brother – Marvin Eitel and One Grandson – Joshua Otterstetter.

Graveside Services will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 with Larry Taylor presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Park Lane Nursing Home in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Dr. Robert Leland (Bob) Birbeck

Dr. Robert Leland (Bob) Birbeck passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at the Russell Regional Hospital.  A former resident of Hays, he had resided at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell for the past eleven months.

He was born in Gentry County, MO on May 14, 1926, the second of five children to Ray and Mollie (Evans) Birbeck.  He grew up on the family farm and attended elementary grades in a rural one-room schoolhouse.  He graduated from high school in King City, MO and after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he continued his educational pursuits at Northwest Missouri State College. He completed his education at the University of Missouri in Kansas City earning the degree, Doctor of Dental Sciences.  He maintained active dental practices in both St. Joseph and Springfield, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lester Ray and Herbert Evans.  He is survived by a son, Billy Ray, and a daughter, Marsha; two sisters, Mary June (Jack) Bush and Virginia Mae (Virgil) Howe; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 AM Thursday at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kansas with military honors courtesy of the Hays VFW.

Gene Verlon Miller

Miller,GenecoverpicGene Verlon Miller, 74, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, October 16, 2015, at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell.

Gene was born on July 06, 1941, on the family farm in Dorrance, Kansas, the son of David and Ruth (Cook) Miller.  He grew up in the Dorrance and Russell area and attended school in Dorrance and achieved his high school diploma from the Chicago Home School program.

As a young man he joined the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Riley Military Base in Ft. Riley, Kansas. He met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Joan Esther Lebsack on December 28, 1981, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.  He worked for the Sanitation Department for the City of Russell and retired from the city after 34 years of service.

He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. He was known to be a very private person and referred to as “Mr. Clean” because he loved doing yard work and took great satisfaction in helping keep the community clean. He also enjoyed performing odd jobs for people in the community, nature watching and he loved his dogs. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife of 33 years, Joan Miller of the home, step daughter Carla Jo Kontour of Russell; stepsons Dale Henry and wife Doreen of Greeley, Colorado and Michael Henry of Colby, Kansas; brothers Gerald Miller of Great Bend, Kansas and Gaylon Miller and wife Brenda of Hutchinson, Kansas; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents, grandparents and many aunts and uncles.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with John Dumler, PMA officiating.

Cremation will follow the services and a private burial will take place at a later date.  Viewing and visitation will take place from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday evening.

Memorials may be given to the Russell County Veterans Memorial and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Vance Robinson Paschal

Vance Robinson Paschal, age 99, of Bullhead City Arizona, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.

He was born on February 20, 1916 in Luray, Kansas the son of Clyde and Blanche Paschal. Raised on a farm, Vance graduated in 1934 from Luray High School. Vance eventually moved to Los Angeles where he worked for the Douglas Aircraft Company for over 25 years as Assistant Production Manager of A-4-A/B Attack Aircraft.

At his retirement he was the Manager of Military Contracts, Scheduler and Change Control. He was married to Mildred Paschal in 1941 and for the next 68 years they were inseparable. He was an avid softball player, playing for the Douglas Aircraft Company fast-pitch softball team for most of his career.

In addition, he loved to work on old cars and fully restored a 1940 Ford Coup. After retirement Vance and Mildred moved to Bullhead City, AZ where he spent his time camping, hunting, fishing and enjoying his friends and family.

Vance was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; son, Michael; parents, Clyde and Blanche Paschal; his sisters Yvonne, Irene and Wilmetta and his brother Dwight.

Vance is survived by his step-son, LeMoyne (Connie) Truesdell; brother, Darrel Paschal; daughter-in-law, Marsha Paschal; grandchildren, Julie Truesdell, James (Sharon) Truesdell, and Jeffery (Lisa) Truesdell, Mark Paschal – Michelle (Jason) Harmon; great-grandchildren, Steven and David Truesdell.

A special thanks to his caregiver, Vearsa Stevens, Dr. Malik, all the nurses and support personnel
at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Vincent Cemetery North of Luray, Kansas with Pastor Les Rye officiating. Cremation has preceded the memorial service. There will be no visitation or gathering before the graveside memorial service. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the memorial service.

Marguerite Jane Wallace

Phillipsburg resident Marguerite Jane Wallace passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 85.

She was born in Phillips County on October 16, 1930, the daughter of James & Hazel (Rumbaugh) Rowland. Her husband, Alfred Dean “Bud” Wallace, preceded her in death on April 23, 2013.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie Hanke of Phillipsburg and Peggy Toler of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister, Eileen Bohl of Phillipsburg; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Friends may sign the book on Thursday, Oct. 22, from noon – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family greeting friends from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. that evening.

Marlin D. Bates

Phillipsburg resident Marlin D. Bates passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 58.

Marlin was born March 5, 1957 in Norton, Kansas the son of Martin B. & Margaret D. (Long) Bates. He was employed at the Rangeland Coop in Phillipsburg.

He was united in marriage to Laura Lee Hill on February 14, 1991. She preceded him in death on October 26, 1996.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Marvin Bates.

Survivors include three sisters, Marie Berls of Oberlin, Kansas, Martha Bennett of Meriden, Iowa and Marilyn Dial of Norton, Kansas; as well as, many nieces & nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Almelo, KS. Inurnment will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, New Almelo.

Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2015 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
