James Alvin Shaeffer

James Alvin Shaeffer died at the age of 87, September 7, 2015, at the Trego Manor Long Term Care in WaKeeney, KS.

Jim was born in Winsor Missouri to Albert and Mattie Shaeffer. He was the youngest of four children. He had three sisters, Pauline, Alberta and Faye, and one brother, Eugene.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie, son Tim and parents, Albert and Mattie Shaeffer and brother Eugene Shaeffer. Jim joined the United States Navy in 1946 and was Honorably discharged after two years of service.

In 1949, he met Rosalie Dinkle, and they were married in 1950 at St. Michael Catholic Church Collyer, KS. They had three children, Tim of Cottage Grove, OR, Dave of Santa Clara, CA, and Emmy Jo of Milpitas, CA. They were proud grandparents of four grandchildren, Kimberly, Kristy, Jammie and Stephanie, eight great-grandchildren, Bryce, Bradley, Brynna, Braedyn, Tyler, Jessie, Sage and Lydia.

His working career consisted of the Union Pacific Railroad, school bus driver for the Trego Unified School District 208, Emergency Medical Technician for Trego County and the City Police Officer in Collyer, KS.

He leaves behind 3 sisters, Pauline, Faye and Alberta, sister in-law Rosemary Walt, brother in-law Bob Dinkel and wife, Lori, of Collyer, Leo Dinkel of Hays, brother in-law Tony Malsom and wife, Flossie, of Great Bend; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. Jim was loved and will be sadly missed by his family.

Family and friends gathering is 7- 9 PM Friday, October 23rd, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter, KS with a short message and time to share fond memories. A short service will be held at8:00 PM with Pastor Steve Dinkle of Hays, KS. A Mass will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 24th, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Collyer, KS. Erma M. Harbers Soodsma

Phillipsburg resident Erma M. Harbers Soodsma passed away at her home Saturday, October 10, 2015, at the age of 84.

She was born March 7, 1931, the daughter of Charles & Mary Lucy (Hern) Swearingen.

She was united in marriage to Albert G. Harbers on May 23, 1948, in Phillipsburg, KS.  He preceded her in death in 1988.  She then married Jacob Bartel “Bart” Soodsma on May 25, 1991, in Prairie View, KS.  He also preceded her in death in 2010.

Survivors include her son, William Harbers of Billing, Montan; 2 daughters, Lucy Snyder and Dora Hoover, both of Great Bend, KS; 4 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; a brother, Ray Swearingen of Georgia; and Rheva Wilson of Spokane, Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in the Prairie View Reformed Church in Prairie View, KS with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating.  Burial will follow in the Prairie View Cemetery.

Mrs. Soodsma will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS  67661.

Sandra Kay (Peck) Rogg

Sandra Kay (Peck) Rogg, 72, of rural Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas.

Sandra was born October 15, 1942 in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph and Hester (Milberger) Peck.  She grew up in Bunker Hill and graduated from Bunker Hill High School.  She then attended Wichita State University where she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business.

Sandra was united in marriage to Verne Lee Rogg on October 8, 1961 in Russell.  This union was blessed with three children; Eric, Pamela and Scott.  They made their home in Russell.  Verne preceded her in death in November of 2001.

Sandra was a crop agent for Farm Bureau Insurance in Russell for over 24 years.  Earlier in life she worked at the Cattlemen’s Bank in Wichita.  She also worked in the business office of the Smokey Hill Public Television Station in Bunker Hill.  She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and a Board member of the Bunker Hill Museum.  She enjoyed oil painting, art, sculptures, water skiing, spending time at the Lake, tending her flower garden, traveling and spending time with Merl and socializing with family and friends.

Surviving family include her daughter, Pamela Rogg of Austin, Texas; son, Scott Rogg of Russell, Kansas; beloved fiancé Merl Parde of Minneapolis, Kansas; brothers, Curtis Peck (Mary) of Wichita, Kansas and Dr. Roger Peck (Norma) of Manhattan, Kansas; sister, Lauree Johnson (Ron) of Ellis, Kansas; and grand dog Comet.  She was preceded in death by her parents, son Eric Rogg, and brother Frank Peck.

Celebration of Sandra’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the Trinity United Methodist Church.  A private family burial of ashes will follow at a later date.  No visitation will be held.  A Memorial has been established with the Bunker Hill Cemetery Fund.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Agnes M. Suppes

Agnes M. Suppes, 94, formerly of Loretto, Kansas, died Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Vernon Paul ‘Vernie’ Schmidt

56195b7dbeb53Vernon Paul “Vernie” Schmidt, age 76, of Catharine, KS passed away Friday, October 9, 2015 at Via Christi Village, Hays. He was born February 3, 1939 in Catharine, KS to Victor and Kathryn “Katy” (Meis) Schmidt. He graduated from Hays High in 1957. He married Kathryn “Kathy” Dinkel February 4, 1961 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.

Vernie enjoyed living the simple life. He loved all animals, especially his three pugs, Porky, Helga and Barbie. They kept him company and brought joy to his life every day. He had a passion for his work in floor covering for 45 years. He was very gifted in so many areas and he enjoyed working. His kidneys failed but he was determined to live and went to his dialysis treatments faithfully for over 4 years. He continued until the last days of his life, he did not want to leave his family. He was a very giving, loving and caring father and grandfather. He had so many friends and knew just about everyone. Everyone loved him for his orneriness and his love for life. He made you laugh and comforted you when you were hurting. If you were in need of anything he was always willing to give. His comforting smile will never be forgotten. You will be forever missed. We love you dad and gramps.

He is survived by two sons, David Schmidt and wife Janet and Keith Schmidt all of Catharine, a daughter, Carla Callahan of Hays; two brothers, Robert L. Schmidt of Hays and Darrell Schmidt of Ajijic, Mexico; five grandsons, Joey Schmidt and wife Ashley, Ethan Schmidt, Kiefer Schmidt and wife Kelli, Kade Schmidt and Kameron Schmidt all of Hays as well as a great granddaughter, Ciara Schmidt daughter of Joey and Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn; his parents and a sister, Jacquelin.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Saturday. October 17, 2015 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine, KS. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

Cheryl Jean Levin

Cheryl Jean Levin was born on June 25, 1951 in Great Falls, Montana.  She passed away Friday, October 9, 2015 at Smith County Memorial Hospital at the age of 64.

Cheryl moved several times during her childhood with her family as her father was in the Air Force.  She attended high school in St. Petersburg Florida.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University.  It was also at Kansas State where she met her future husband, Otto Levin.  They were married in the chapel on base at Ft. Riley, Kansas on December 30, 1972.

After their wedding and graduation from Kansas State they moved back to Kensington, Kansas where the family farming operation is located at.  Cheryl worked as a lab technician at Smith County Memorial Hospital, and as secretary at Levin Farms.  She also kept very busy raising her two sons, Travis and Joshua, and in later years, babysitting her grandson Landon Cash Levin.  When she wasn’t working or helping her family, she enjoyed having coffee and conversation with her neighbors and friends, traveling abroad, and visiting her extended family in Kansas, Texas and Arizona.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Dorsey Barker; her mother, Drusilla Barker; and a sister, Darcie Barker.

Survivors include her husband Otto Levin, Kensington, KS; mother-in-law Evelyn Levin, Kensington, KS; son Travis Levin, and his wife Carmen, Fairview, TX; son Joshua Levin, and his wife Lindsey, of Kensington, KS; sister Debra Brannon, and her husband Glenn of Cypress, TX; and five grandchildren, Keeten, Bella, Annalise, Joel, and Landon Levin.

Funeral services will be held at the First St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS, at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2015, with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Germantown Cemetery, Smith County, KS.

Mrs. Levin will lie in state at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The family will receive friends at the First St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday evening.

Gaylene Sue (Duntz) Loyd

Kirwin resident Gaylene Sue (Duntz) Loyd passed away, Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at her home in Kirwin at the age of 59.

She was born July 13, 1956 in Smith Center, Kansas the daughter of Melvin & Veta (Eller) Duntz.

Gaylene loved photography, fishing and camping, but most of all, spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Lyndon & Leon Duntz.

Survivors include her husband Don of the home; 2 sons, Brian Winters of Phillipsburg and Justin Bohl & wife, Tonya of Mineral Wells, TX; 4 daughters, Sheryl Cundiff & husband, Shawn of Stockton, Darcy Smith of Hays, Melissa Smith of Phillipsburg and Lacie Loyd & significant other, Jeremy Dayhuff of Kirwin; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Randy Loyd of Yankton, SD.

Cremation was chosen.  The family will conduct a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Lawrence Creek Cemetery, Osborne County, KS with Pastor Brian Loreg officiating.

LaVeta K. Becker Legg

Logan resident LaVeta K. Becker Legg passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Hilltop Lodge Nursing Home in Beloit, Kansas, at the age of 90.

LaVeta was born November 16, 1924 in Lawrence, Ne the daughter of Bernard J. & Matilda (Kempkes) Jurgensmeier.

Suvivors include her 2 sons, Dennis Becker of Mankato and Charles Becker of Plainville; 5 daughters, Donna Grounds of Parsons, Patricia Bowman of Vinita, OK, Rosemary Roberts of Glendale, AZ, Lana Balingit of Logan and Jayne Sibley of Beloit; 3 step-children, Kent Legg of McCook, NE, Deborah Kline of Gypsum, CO and Nedra Legg of Arvada, CO; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and 3 sisters, Patricia Thompson of Lancaster, CA, Maxine Miller of Bakersfield, CA and Lois Jurgensmeier of Hastings, NE.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2015 in the St. John’s Catholic Church in Logan, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Betty Ann (Dautel) Nondorf

She was born February 22, 1932 in Goodland, KS to Albert “Dick” and Alice (Leckron) Dautel. Betty was the sixth of seven children. She grew up on a farm and attended school in Edson, KS. On October 27, 1947 she married Wilfred “Willie” Nondorf in the Catholic Church Parish in Goodland, KS. Betty worked with Willie in the family business, Barnhart Garden Center and the Atwood Thrift Shop.

Preceding her in death were her husband Willie, April 7, 1991; parents; two brothers, Charles and Kenneth; three sisters, Ruth Berringer, Virginia Chatfield and Albutus Toplift and three great grandchildren, Susan Doris, Jordan Doris and Lila Bretton.

Survivors include her three sons, Billy of Colby, KS, Jimmy (Priscilla) of Altus, OK and Joe of Greeley, CO; six daughters, Linda (Mike) Damon of Colby, KS, Marge (Ralph) Bretton of McCook, NE, Judy (Steve) Schroeder of Salina, KS, Patty (Quentin) Alberhasky of Las Vegas, NV, Lucy Rooney of Benkelman, NE and Janet Nondorf of Wichita, KS; sister, Alberta (Hank) Tagtmeyer of Siebert, CO; sister-in-law, Merna Dautel of Goodland, KS; thirty nine grandchildren; forty one great grandchildren; thirteen great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Henry Pfannenstiel

Henry Pfannenstiel 001Henry Pfannenstiel, 97, Hays, died Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

He was born January 6, 1918 in Munjor, Kansas the son of Martin and Catherine (Leiker) Pfannenstiel.

On November 12, 1945 he married Eugenia Lucille Deorsam in Munjor. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He was the first person drafted from Ellis County and was involved in numerous battles during the war. He was in the first landing on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France, and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

He was a machinist and shop foreman at S&W Supply for many years, was an antiques dealer, and owned and operated Jean’s Novelties. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Hays American Legion Post #173. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques, fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Eugenia, of Hays, three sons; Dennis T. Pfannenstiel and wife Crystal of Port St. Lucie, FL, Merle L. Pfannenstiel and wife Romey of Garland, TX, and Gary Pfannenstiel of Hays, five daughters; Audrey Herold and husband Ron of Hays, Marsha Hupfer and husband Dennis of Shawnee, Brenda Kroeger, Karen Gilmore and husband Louie, and Pamela Allen, all of Hays, fourteen grandchildren, Dennis Pfannenstiel, Sheri Lynn Strickland, Joey Pfannenstiel, Steven Pfannenstiel, Robbie Herold, Valerie Schupman, Shireen Herold, Laura Bean, Rachel Hupfer, Josh Delcamp, Megan Solomon, Jenna Kroeger, Kristen Gilmore, and Caitlin Allen, and sixteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Alfred and Rupert, two sisters Sophia Windholz and Philippa Pfannenstiel, half brothers Frank, Casper, Nick, Boniface, and Celestine, and half sisters Pauline Rupp and Mary Karlin.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street. Burial with military honors by the Hays American Legion Post #173 honor guard will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 Saturday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Shirley L. Bruner

Shirley L. Bruner, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at her home in Dighton, Kansas. She was born on May 26, 1932 in Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of Oren R. And Florence Lewis Howard. She was a resident for over 50 years in Lane County, Kansas and was the owner and operator of Shirley’s Cafe in Healy, Kansas.

She was a member of the Healy United Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas.

On May 3, 1954 she married Howard D. Bruner in Clayton, New Mexico. He passed away on March 16, 1993 in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Rickey L. Mastin of Hays, Kansas, One Daughter – LeeAnn Osborn of Dighton, Kansas, Eight Grandchildren, Eighteen Great Grandchildren and Two Great Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, One Daughter – Rebecca L. Fairchild and One Son – Randy Bruner.

Funeral Services will be held at the Healy United Methodist Church in Healy, Kansas at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2015 with the Rev. Bud Tuxhorn presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Shirley Bruner Memorial Fund % Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Healy Cemetery in Healy, Kansas.

Linda Sue Pelzel

3336537Linda Sue Pelzel, age 67, of Cassville, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Mercy Hospital, in Rogers, Arkansas.

Ms. Pelzel, daughter of Ezra and Edlee (Valentine) Tittle, was born in Hobart, Oklahoma, on January 2, 1948.

Linda graduated from high school in Liberal, Kansas, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Major in Sociology and Political Science at Fort Hays State University, in Hays, Kansas. She was employed by the State of Kansas as a social worker for over 30 years. Linda was extremely active in the community, volunteering at the Hays Public Library, Hays Community Assistance Center, Barry County Council on Aging, and various other organizations.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hays. In 2010 she relocated to Cassville to be near her sisters and began volunteering for Barry County Council on Aging. Volunteering was a way of life for Linda and she was always thinking of others. Linda loved to read and enjoyed baking.

Survivors include two sons, Len and his wife, Trish Gregg-Pelzel of Olathe, Kansas, Lance and his significant other, Laikynne Smoot, of Mountain Home, Arkansas; one daughter, LeAnne Bennett and her husband James, of Flint, Michigan; two sisters, Marie Reid of Cassville, and Sondra Carson, of Mulberry, Arkansas; and one grandson, Troy Pelzel, of Slidell, Lousianna.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Williams and Gwen Meier.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the White Funeral Home & Crematory, with words of comfort spoken by Laikynne Smoot.

Memorials in honor of Linda may be made to the Haven of the Ozarks, and entrusted to the White Funeral Home & Crematory, P.O. Box 890, Cassville, MO 65625.

Lynn L. Wallgren

Phillipsburg resident Lynn L. Wallgren passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 at the Smith County Hospital in Smith Center, KS at the age of 67.

He was born December 5, 1947 in Logan, Kansas, the son of Lloyd & Betty (Damewood) Wallgren. Lynn was the owner of Heartland Marketing in Phillipsburg, KS for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Janeen, of Phillipsburg, KS; son, Ty Wallgren, of Kearney, NE; daughter Mandy Wallgren of Hays, KS; two brothers, Rod and Ron Wallgren, both of Hays; and two grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the First St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, KS, with Pastor Dave Hutson officiating.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
