Ruth Marie (Richmond) Goodwin

Ruth Marie (Richmond) Goodwin died resting peacefully with her family by her side at her retirement home on June 23, 2015 in Lenexa, Kansas. She was 92.

Mrs. Goodwin was born July 27, 1922 in Codell, Kansas to Ormas and Mary (Gardels) Richmond. She graduated from Codell High School in 1940. Ruth moved to Hays, Kansas to work at Duckwalls.

Ruth married Duane Goodwin on September 5, 1943 in Yuma, Arizona. She worked at Consolidated Air Craft in San Diego, CA during World War II while Duane served in the Marine Corps. After the war, the couple returned to Hays in 1946.

She was a homemaker and lifelong volunteer in Hays and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she participated in the United Methodist Women’s Ruth Circle and the United Methodist Women’s Quilters. Ruth was an award winning quilter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Duane Goodwin. She is survived by her two sons: Kent (Sue) of Shawnee, Kansas and Kyle (Karen) of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren. A joint memorial service for her and Duane is planned for July 11 at First United Methodist Church Hays, Kansas. A memorial has been established in honor of Duane and Ruth at the First United Methodist Church 305 West 7th Street, Hays, KS 67601.

Bonnie Darlene Simon

Bonnie Darlene Simon, age 83, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on April 9, 1932 in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel Stacy Browning. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scott City, Kansas and was one of the founders of Dusty Boots Riding Club that was started in the early 1960’s.

On March 26, 1950 she married Wendell Simon in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on June 18, 1999 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Survivors Include her One Son – Jay Simon of Wichita, Kansas, Two Daughters – Debbie & Kelly Comer of Hutchinson, Kansas, Breva & Bill Winderlin of Scott City, Kansas, Six Grandchildren and Six Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband and one Granddaughter – Allison Williams.

Graveside Services will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015 with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls presiding.

Memorials may be given to the Scott County Hospital.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Herbert Charles Graves

Herbert Charles Graves, age 87, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on October 7, 1927 in Woodward, Oklahoma, the son of Charles Miller and Mary Ann Hoffert Graves. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1984 moving from Wichita, Kansas, Herb worked for Arkla Gas Company until his retirement.

Memberships include the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas a the Good Sam’s Club. Herb was a US Navy Veteran serving from 1945 until 1947.

On June 30, 1979 he married Mary Cletes Gruver in Wichita, Kansas. She passed away on August 25, 2003 in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors Include his Four Sons – Charles Eugene and Cheryl Graves of Las Cruses, New Mexico, Jimmy Lee and Vicky Petty of Wichita, Kansas, Gilbert Jay and Jean Petty of Jacksonville, Florida, William Joe and Marilyn Petty of Smolan, Kansas, Two Daughters – Julie Ann and Jeff Arnold of South Hutchinson, Kansas, Vera Jane & Vinny Argiro of Key West, Florida, Three Sisters – Frances Louise Blalock of Marlow, Oklahoma, Merle Ann Lehman of Canyon, Texas, Laurel Lee Shepherd of Oviedo, Florida, Seventeen Grandchildren, Seventeen Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, Two Step Sons – Jerry Dean Petty, Jeffery Neal Petty and One Great Grandson – John Wilferd Petty.

Funeral Service will be held at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2015 with Jeff Arnold presiding.

Ellen Louise Berry

Ellen Louise Berry, age 82, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Hays Medical Center. She was born April 30, 1933 on Kinsley, Kansas to Leslie Clarence and Martha (Amrine) Mack. She married Robert Clyde Berry on January 6, 1951 in Larned, Kansas.

She was a Licensed Mental Health Technician retiring after 32 years at Larned State Hospital. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting and other handmade crafts. She also enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading all types of books including mysteries, time travel, historical and romance novels.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Clyde Berry of Great Bend; a son, Robert Charles Berry of Great Bend; a daughter, Nancy Jo Berry of Evansville, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Lance, Lyle, Louie, Leo and Lee as well as three sisters, Doris Kraus, Mina Berryman and Norma Jean Dresher and a half sister, Frances Eckhoff.

Private family services and inurnment will take place at a later date in the Larned Cemetery.

Leroy A. ‘Butch’ Dinges

Leroy A. “Butch” Dinges, 80, died Monday, June 22, 2015, at HaysMed.

He was born September 7, 1934, in Hays to Nick L. and Julia (Smith) Dinges. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1952.

On June 6, 1953, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Schnatterly in Hays.

He was a farmer & cattleman for 35 years. In his later years, he was a land developer, developing the Woodland Plains Addition west of Hays. Butch greatly enjoyed spending time with his family and caring for the wildlife surrounding his home.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Chris, Golden, CO, Rick (Dorene) Littleton, CO; seven daughters, Terri Rupp (Bruce), Hays, Sharon Wasinger (Roxie Whitmer), Pueblo West, CO, Mary Jane Arnhold (Tim), Loveland, CO, Michelle Dietrich (Fred), Wamego, KS, Lucy Barnes (Howard), Julie Rider (Kurt), and Betsy Forinash (Brian), all of Hays; a sister, Dorothy Burkart, Lacrosse, KS; two brothers, William “Chris”, and Norman “Joe”, both of Broomfield, CO; 23 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Cliff; a daughter-in-law, Sara; three brothers, Adrian, Howard and (infant) Charles; two sisters, Norma Jean and (infant) Charlotte.

A graveside service will follow visitation on Friday at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 2, from 5-8 PM and Friday 9:30-11 AM, July 3, at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 2509 Vine, Hays.

Norma Yvonne Eichman

Longtime Quinter resident Norma Yvonne Eichman passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. She was born August 22, 1931 on the family farm, south of Quinter, to Andrew and Mary (Anderson) Bird. Norma was 83 years of age.

Norma was a 1949 graduate of Quinter High School. On June 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to Paul Eichman, in WaKeeney. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage together. He survives of Quinter. Norma was a devoted homemaker and mother. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Women’s Group. Her talent in the kitchen as a great cook was known by many friends and family. She loved to crochet and embroider. She loved birds, and always had a bird bath out to encourage them to spend time in her yard. If you saw Norma, you could be sure her Dachshund dogs weren’t far away. She loved her dogs. Norma will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; three sons, Randy and wife Shirley of Ft. Myers, Florida, Gene and wife Kathleen of Aurora, Colorado, and Jamie of Aurora, Colorado; granddaughter, Nicole and husband Mitch Percival of Little Rock, Arkansas; great-granddaughter, Ava Percival; one brother, Eldon Bird; and one sister, Lorene Redmond. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Roland Bird; sister, Eva Norton; and an infant sister, Reva Lonore.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 26, 2015 at the United Methodist Church, Quinter. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the church.

Cecilia Basgall

Cecilia Basgall, age 86, of Hays passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the Rush County Nursing Home in LaCrosse, Kansas. She was born May 22, 1929 in Catharine, Kansas to Alois and Dora (Meis) Walter. She graduated from Girls Catholic High in 1948. She married Gilbert “Doc” Basgall in November 1948.

Cecilia was a co-owner of Basgall Insurance Company for several years with her husband. She then worked at the Home Furniture Company and she retired from Dreiling Oil Company where she was a bookkeeper. After retirement she was a longtime volunteer at the community assistance center. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the D of I.

She is survived by a brother, Alfred Walters of Wichita; a sister, Lorraine Wasinger of Hays as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert “Doc” Basgall; her parents; 7 brothers, Alvin, Albert, Seraphin, Aloysius, Marcellus, Richard and Archibald and 3 sisters, Hilaria, Leona and Ella.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Ronald James Johnson, age 50, died Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the Ness County Hospital, Ness City.

He was born on September 25, 1964 in McPherson, Kansas the son of J. Dean and Shirley (Peterson) Johnson.

He was a heavy equipment operator for the Ness County Road and Bridge department.

On December 5, 1994 he married Diane Shelter in Marion, Kansas. He is survived by his two daughters, Katie and Samantha Johnson of Ness City; one step-daughter, Bekka Coffman, Clayton, Georgia; a brother, John Johnson of Moundridge; one sister, Pauline Dossett of Newton, and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and at Jost Funeral Home, Hillsboro, Kansas on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until noon with graveside funeral service at 1:00 in the Durham Park Cemetery, Durham, Kansas.

Macinzie Jade Lehman

Macinzie Jade Lehman, age 21, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Castle Rock, Colorado. Macinzie was born May 18, 1994 in Tribune, Kansas, the daughter of Dennis Dean & Malinda Pollart Lehman. She was a 2012 graduate of Greeley County High School in Tribune, Kansas where she lettered in Volleyball, Basketball and Golf and a 2014 graduate from Colby Community College, earning an associate degree in Art.

Macinzie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tribune, Kansas. She was also very active in The Door Youth Group and Straight Ahead Strivers 4-H club and in all athletic activity any and everywhere. She was also an assistant coach for the girl’s basketball team in Victoria, Kansas.

Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery in Tribune, Kansas.
