Virginia Conkright

Virginia Conkright, age 89, passed away at Rhode Island Suites, Ransom, Kansas on Sunday, June 21, 2015.

She was born on July 16, 1925 in Ransom, KS, the daughter of Adolph and Anna Roediger Schweitzer. Virginia graduated from Ransom High School in 1943 and married Orval Conkright on October 30, 1946. They lived in the Arnold and Ransom communities most of their lives. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1994.

Virginia was a farm wife, cook at the Arnold Grade School and worked several years at the Long Term Care in Ransom. In retirement, she and Orval enjoyed traveling and especially the years they spent wintering in Arizona; where they became avid Cubs fans. She was a member of the Arnold United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Alfred) Schwartzkopf, Ness City, KS; son, Tom (Stephanie) Conkright, Arnold; grandchildren, Lori Shellenberger and husband Tim Casey, Grant (Jennifer) Shellenberger, Dean Conkright, and Patty Conkright; and four great-grandchildren: Madeleine, Dylan, Liam, and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and spouse; son, Doug Conkright; four brothers, Raymond, Wallace, Garland, and Harvey; and seven sisters, Helen Zumbrunn, Selma Walter, Lena Chapman, Ruth Chapman, Dora Brown, Sylvia Wassinger, and Laurine Brown.

Friends are welcome to sign the book Thursday, June 25, 9:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

Graveside service will be Friday, June 26, 2015, 10:00 A.M. at Arnold cemetery.

Sharon Fay Stahl

Sharon Fay Stahl passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015 at her home in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 65.

She was born on November 30, 1949 to Sam and Stella (Snook) Casey in Lyons, Kansas. Sharon graduated from high school with the class of 1967.

On September 20, 1967 she was united in marriage to Ron Werner in Hoisington. They were blessed with four children, Ron, Braden, Sharris, and Justin. They later divorced. She was united in marriage to Dave Stahl on November 18, 2000 in Plainville, Kansas.

Sharon had an artistic eye and spirit. She enjoyed painting, doing ceramics, and had a gift for interior design. Each room of her house had its own unique theme and a special place for the things she treasured. But above all, her greatest treasure was her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly and showed so much affection. She supported her children in everything they did and loved to share their accomplishments. She passed onto her family the gift of giving. “It was never how we give but how much love we put into giving.”

Sharon will be cherished by her children, Ron Werner and wife Cappy, Braden Werner and wife Tammy all of Plainville, Sharris Coomes and husband Shorty of Hays, and Justin Werner of Plainville; step-sons, Cory Stahl and wife Christy and Brett Stahl all of Plainville; brother, Lawrence Casey and wife Sherry of Hutchinson; sisters, Betty Collins of Plainville, Mary Brady and husband Francis of Chase, Kansas, Elizabeth Rineheart of Oklahoma, Jeanie May and husband Woody of Oberlin, and Karen Sanders of Plainville; grandchildren Cole Werner and wife Sara, Sheldyne Brown, Dalton Werner, Shania Werner, Brooke Werner, Bailey Werner, Rylee Stahl, Ransym Stahl, Rayne Stahl, Zeven Werner, Taylor Stahl, Conner Stahl, Weston Coomes, Ross Coomes, Isaac Coomes, and Rachel Coomes, .
She was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Stella Casey, husband Dave Stahl, brother Sam Casey, sisters, Dora Holliday, Wanda Blankenship and Joyce Brady; and grandson, Maverick Werner.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, June 24, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Carl Jr. Klitzke

Carl Jr. Klitzke, age 88, died Thursday, June 18, 2015, at Grisell Memorial Hospital, Ransom, KS. He was born June 15, 1927 to Carl “Bud” and Reva (Holmes) Klitzke in Ness County Kansas.

He attended Ransom High School and joined the Navy his senior year. He married Vivian Horschem on Nov. 20, 1947, in Ransom. They lived on the farm until 1965 when he built Vivian her dream home in town. In 1989, they moved to Apache Junction, AZ, and later relocated to Sun City, AZ.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II. He was a farmer and spent 25 years in public service as the mayor of Ransom and on the school board. He was also an electrician and proud business owner of Klitzke TV and Appliance store in Ransom.

Carl was an avid card player, reader and lifelong outdoorsman, and when he wasn’t found fishing or hunting, he enjoyed panning for gold. Other hobbies included collecting antique guns, Depression glass and jewelry making. He loved to make things grow and often gave neighbors a bucket of fruit.

He was passionate about sports and spent his life attending his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s games.

Survivors include his children Steve Klitzke, Hays, KS; Jeb Klitzke and wife, Anna Mae, Ransom, KS; and Taa Schwieterman and husband, Omer, Syracuse, KS. Grandchildren include Tara Goering, husband, Brandon and children Kyler Meyers, Blade and Sage Goering, Hays, KS; Jon Kuhn, Wichita, KS; Tally Ann Klitzke, McPherson, KS; Chandra Barron and her husband, Winniberto, Great Bend, KS; Carl Schwieterman and children Maya and Gunner, Overland Park, KS; Carl Bryce Klitzke, wife, Valerie and children Myra, Luke and newborn Samuel, Pratt, KS; and Seth Schwieterman, wife, Janae and child Boston, Overland Park, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Vivian; his son, Jeff Klitzke and daughter-in-law, Elaine Klitzke.

Services will be held graveside at the Ransom Cemetery on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 10 a.m.

Charlotte Ann Mahin

Charlotte Ann Mahin, daughter of Paul and Clara (Huffman) Wolf was born on Dec 19, 1941 and passed away June 18, 2015 at the age of 73 years and 6 months.

She spent her childhood and growing up years on a farm near Quinter. She was baptized and became a member of the Old German Baptist Church on Oct 20, 1957 to which she dearly loved and remained faithful until death. She was anointed in March of 2014.

She was united in marriage to Dennis Mahin of Knob Noster Missouri on Oct 12, 1974. They enjoyed 40 years of married life together. Mother spent the first years of their married life working at Kansas/Nebraska Gas Co. in Quinter. They then moved to Knob Noster Missouri where they spent 5 years working on the Mahin family farm. They then moved back to Quinter, where she spent the remainder of her life. She spent some 20 years working at Gove County Medical Center as a custodian, nursery aid, and in the laundry department. She was respected and loved by her coworkers. Mother loved and appreciated others, and she strove to befriend and share with all those that she met. Mother lived an active life until October 2012, when she suffered an aneurism and a stroke. Her health continued to decline until her Savior called her home.

She is survived by her husband Dennis Mahin; daughter Janelle Bowman and husband Nathan; son Norman Mahin and wife Shelley; grandchildren Jack, Stewart, Reid Bowman and Allison and Leanna Mahin. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Clara Wolf; brother Eldon Wolf; brother-in-law David Bayer; Sister in law Mary Bayer; sister Violet Flora and husband Richard; and son in law Nathan Metzger.

She was loved and will be missed by those who knew her.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Old German Baptist Brethren Church, Quinter. Burial will be in Big Creek Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be Monday, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Connie B. Riggs, age 64, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Salina Regional Medical Center. She was born July 11, 1950, in Phillipsburg, to Oscar Lyle and Freda (Dalby) Luce.

Connie was a 1968 graduate of Trego Community High School, WaKeeney. On July 20, 1968, she was united in marriage to Leonard Riggs, in Quinter. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage together. Connie cherished her time with family, especially her grandchildren. She loved to grow flowers and vegetable in the garden. She was known throughout her family for her cooking skills. She and Leonard were known for their love of animals, large and small. Connie especially enjoyed her miniature horses and donkeys. She will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include her husband; three children, Rachel Anne and husband Dennis Elsen of Beloit, Jennifer and husband Terry Cotton of Wichita, and Matthew and wife Donna of Wichita; six grandchildren, Haley, Brianna, and Lacy Elsen, Miranda and Tanner Cotton, and Dakota Riggs; two brothers, Ken Luce and wife Theresa of Oakley, and Jeff Luce of Europe. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 22, 2015 at the United Methodist Church of Quinter. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Collyer.

Joseph John ‘Joe’ Stottmann

Joseph John “Joe” Stottmann, 82, of Parsons, passed away at 10:40 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Elm Haven West Nursing Home in Parsons.

He was born August 14, 1932 in Sterling, Oklahoma to Herman M. and Ida (Schulte) Stottmann. Joe graduated from Anadarko High School in Anadarko, Oklahoma.

Joe farmed prior to serving his country from 1953 to 1955 in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge, he moved to Parsons where he began working at the MKT Railroad.

On November 12, 1955, he and Charlotte A. “Charlene” Habiger were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Parsons. They began married life in Parsons and moved to Kansas City in 1957 where he worked for Manor Bakery before returning to Parsons in 1963. Upon his return to Parsons, Joe continued to work at the railroad as a locomotive engineer until his retirement. During that time, he was also engaged in farming and custom haying which brought him great enjoyment.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parsons where he served as Eucharistic minister, lector, and sang in the Gregorian chant choir. Joe dedicated his life to the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a 4th degree member of Assembly 2496, a 3rd degree member of Council 643, and had earned the 100 VIP lapel pin for recruiting over 100 members to the K of C. Joe was instrumental in organizing and conducting Bingo for the Knights of Columbus from 1977 through December of 2014. He was a Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator, Former District Deputy, Past State Warden, and State Vocations Director. He and his wife, Charlene, served as the State Pro-Life Chair Couple and assisted in establishing the annual sausage dinner which they participated in for 30 years to raise funds for Pro-Life organizations. In 1998, Joe was named Knight of the Year and in 1991 his family was awarded the Wichita Diocesan Family of the Year. Joe served as an officer in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and also served on the Board of Directors of the National Beefalo Association where he was President for two years. He was also a member of the Elks-BPOE Lodge No. 527 and the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees (NAVRE).

He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and was a member of numerous bowling teams for over 30 years. Joe especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Two highlight trips were to Rome, Italy during the Jubilee Year, where he and Charlene celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, and a pilgrimage to multiple sites in the Holy Land in and around Jerusalem.

Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Dinkel

Rudolph “Rudy” Dinkel, age 86, of Quinter (formerly of Grainfield), passed away, Monday, June 15, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. He was born May 11, 1929 in rural Grainfield, to Joseph and Amalia (Rohr) Dinkel.

Rudy attended Grainfield schools. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Raymond. On October 11, 1955, Rudy was united in marriage to JoAnn Kraft. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage, until her passing on January 15, 2014. He and JoAnn owned and operated Dinkel IGA, in Grainfield for many years. Rudy loved watching sports, and was an avid KU fan. He loved to travel with his family, and followed his grandchildren’s activities. Rudy was known for making outdoor Christmas decorations. Rudy and JoAnn always put out a very nice garden. He was very involved in the community, having served with many groups and organizations. Some of those include, American Legion, Boy Scouts Volunteer, Rural Fire Department, Kansas Hunter Safety Instructor, and the Wheatland Booster Club. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Rudy was also the sexton for the Grainfield Cemetery for thirteen years.

Survivors include five children, Kay and husband Albert Goetz of Park, Ron and wife Vickie of Emporia, Allan and wife Wanda of Quinter, Kathy and husband Mike Mathes of Topeka, and Tom and wife Nancy of Garden City; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe of Hill City, and Don of Brighton, Colorado; and four sisters, Wilma Schumacher of Hutchinson, Mildred Baker of Topeka, Betty Gagnon of Denver, Colorado, and Joan Zerr of Ft. Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his daughter, Sheryl Powers; and three brothers, Ben, Adolph, and Alvin.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2015 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield. Burial will be in the Grainfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., with a parish vigil service immediately following. Both will be at the funeral home in Quinter.

Margaret J. Lee

Margaret J. Lee, age 93, died June 14, 2015 at her home in Scott City, Kansas.

She was born on May 30, 1922 in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence W. and Rosa Been Dickhut. Margaret served in the United States Navy Hospital Corp at Terminal Island, California.

On May 26, 1945 she married Kenneth R. Lee at Wee Kirk of the O’Heather in Long Beach, California. He preceded her in death on November 8, 1982.

She attended Scott Community High School and Kansas State University.

Together Margaret and Kenneth owned and operated Lusterite Cleaners for 18 years. She also worked as the office manager for the Scott City Clinic.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, CWF, El Quartelejo Study Club, all of Scott City and the Alpha Xi Delta Sorotity of Manhattan, Kansas

Betty was born September 29, 1923 in Craig, Missouri, the daughter of John L. & Carrie E. Twadell Pflaumer. A resident of Wichita County, Kansas since 1945, she was a farm wife and homemaker.

Betty was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Craig, Missouri. She was also a member of the Wichita County Historical Society, a 4-H Leader specializing in Knitting and was formerly a Wichita County Women’s Bowling League member.

On June 24, 1945 she married Kenneth R. Bishop in Kansas City, Kansas.
