Pearl Mary Leiker, age 88, of Munjor, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

Funeral services will be 10:30 Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday 5 PM – 8 PM and Tuesday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A combined Munjor Daughters of Isabella rosary and parish vigil will be 7 PM Monday at the funeral chapel.

Janet Ruth (Thomas) Rumpel

Longtime Goodland, KS resident and former Sherman County Clerk, Janet R. Rumpel, 68, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, CO.

Janet was born on June 30, 1951 in Russell, Kansas to Bernard and Josephine (Hammerschmidt) Thomas. She was one of three children. Janet attended school in Wakeeney, KS and graduated from Trego Community High School in 1969. She then went on and attended two years of college at Northwest Kansas Vocational School in Goodland, where she earned a degree in Data Processing.

On November 20, 1971, Janet married Alan Rumpel in Wakeeney, KS. To this union, two children, Scott and Brian were born.

Following her graduation, Janet started her career working at Goodland Glass as a bookkeeper until a job opportunity came up for her to start working at the Sherman County Courthouse as a Deputy Clerk under Velma Holste. Upon Velma’s retirement, Janet was appointed by the Kansas Governor to fulfill Velma’s position until that term was over. Janet was then elected as the Sherman County Clerk where she worked for 33 years until her retirement.

Following her retirement, Janet worked part time for a couple years at Dependable Glass Company as a bookkeeper. She was also a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland. She held every position on the Kansas County Clerks Association; working her way all the way up to being the President. She had a love of animals, enjoyed baking, painting, sketching, playing the piano and gardening. She was also a Lector at church, and spent many hours working as a Sherman County Election Official, getting prepared for many elections.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her son Scott, and a half-brother Don Thomas.

She is survived by her loving husband Alan of the home in Goodland, her son Brian (Linda) Rumpel of Goodland, KS, six grandchildren, and a brother LeRoy (Barb) Thomas of Goodland, KS. She is also survived by numerous extended family, nieces and nephews and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, August, 5, 2019 at 10:30 AM MT at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland with Father Andrew Rockers and Father Norbert Dlabal officiating. Burial followed in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Sunday, August 4, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with a Vigil Service and Parish Rosary at 7:00 PM.

Memorials may be designated to the Janet Rumpel Memorial Fund and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Nancy Jane Wyatt, age 77, of Emporia, Kansas died Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays. She has lived in Hays since 2015.

Doris Meder Pfannenstiel

Doris Meder Pfannenstiel, age 94, died July 30, 2019.  She was born April 22, 1925 in Pfeifer, KS.  She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Barbara Meder, Brothers Gilbert (Helen) Meder, Elmer (Mary Ann) Meder and Edward Meder, and Sisters Florentine (Adolf) Degenhardt, Helen Duay, and Irene (Paul) Benda; and her Husband Edward M.

She is survived by her daughter Christy (Quentin) Garlets of Minnesota, her son Gerard (Molly Davies) Pfannenstiel of Nebraska, and four grandchildren: Michael, Charles, Lucille, Leland, and sister-in law’s Lena Meder and Rita Bieker.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Friday 4 PM – 8 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary at 7 PM at Brock’s – Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory, 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601 and Saturday visitation will be 9 AM – 9:30 AM prior to services at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Donald F. Clouston

Donald F. Clouston, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Tuesday July 23, 2019. He will be interred in the Ness City, Kansas, cemetery with military honors at a graveside service on August 16, 2019 at 10 am. Fitzgerald Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, BJ Clouston, his children: Leslie Atchison and David Clouston of Pueblo, Colorado; Daniel Clouston of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Recheal Daniels of Coolidge, Arizona; Patti Weber Jakoubek (Michael Teply) and Tony Weber (Lisa) of Marion, Iowa; his siblings, Jeanne MacDonald (Clif) of Johnstown, Colorado; Mary Lee DeShazo of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Robert Clouston (Marye) of Manhattan, Kansas; and brother-in-law Gayle Garrelts of Hays, Kansas. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ann Clouston Garrelts, daughter Tracy Clouston, and son-in-law John Atchison.

Don was born June 20, 1933, in Ransom, Kansas, the son of Jessee and Helen (Doty) Clouston. He married BJ Weber on May 24, 1995, in Meriden, Kansas. He was a district manager for an oil trucking company and a member of Noelridge Christian Church. He served in the Navy during the Korean War on the USS Boxer. Dr. Travis Pfannenstiel

Dr. Travis Pfannenstiel, 43, a Ft. Myers, FL resident since 2015, passed away in his wife’s arms on Saturday, July 27, 2019 after a 20 month battle with brain cancer. He was born February 1, 1976 in Salina, KS.

Dr. Pfannenstiel was active duty in the United States Army for 13 years. He was a parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Ft. Myers, FL. Dr. Pfannenstiel was an ear doctor here in Fort Myers. He completed his Neurotology fellowship at Michigan Ear Institue, Farmington Hills, MI. His Otolaryngology residency was at Brooke Army Hospital, San Antonio, TX. He attended Loyola Medical School, Chicago IL, and Regis University in Denver, CO. Back at home in Hays, KS he attended Marian High School, and Thomas More Prep. “27 years of school” he explained to his kids.

Travis’ favorite things to do were: surgery, watch Kansas City Chiefs and Royals games, coach his sons’ little league baseball, spend time with friends and family fishing, and be in nature. He especially loved trees, even though, as he joked, he was allergic to most of them.

He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Terri Pfannenstiel of Ft. Myers, FL, formerly of Boston, MA; four adored children, John, Ryan, Hannah (triplets age 11) and Ellen (age 9) all of Ft. Myers, FL; his parents, Floyd and Sheila Pfannenstiel of Hays, KS; as well as many extended family members and friends.

A visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 12171 Iona Road, Ft. Myers, FL 33908. A Memorial Mass Memorial will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, August 1, 2019 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Interment will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Sarasota National Cemetery, State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.

Phillipsburg resident Barbara A. Russell passed away July 31, 2019 at her home in rural Phillipsburg at the age of 68. She was born July 18, 1951 in Holdrege, NE, the daughter of George & Genevieve (Smith) Littrell.

Phillipsburg resident Ronald Conrad-Farr passed away July 18, 2019 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 63.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor of the home, 4 sons: Dakota Conrad-Farr of Phillipsburg, Jeremiah Darling of Kirwin, Andrew Darling of Texas & David Conrad of Oklahoma; 2 daughters, Autumn Conrad-Farr & Carla Darling of Phillipsburg; 6 brothers: Guy Conrad, Ray, Rex, Ronnie & Randy French & Steven Renodin; his sister, Brenda Davidson; several grandchildren & great grandchildren.

Norman Henry Rippe

Norman Henry Rippe, 85, passed away Monday, July 29, 2019 at Smith Center Health and Rehab.

Norman was born May 1, 1934 in Lanham, KS, the son of Henry F. and Malinda (Maatsch) Rippe. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lanham, KS on May 27, 1934 and confirmed his faith in Christ on March 21, 1948. He was a graduate of Odell High School, Odell, NE, graduating in 1951. On May 8, 1960 he married Darlene Ruth Dierking in Herkimer, KS, to this union they were blessed with four children, Warren, Doug, Sharyl and Kevin. Norman was a United States Army Veteran serving from February 6, 1957 to January 1, 1959 when he was honorably discharged. Norman had been a manager at Firestone Tire & Rubber for 25 years until retiring in 1985. After retirement he worked for Hardware Hank for several years. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church, Smith Center. KS. Norman was a loving husband grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed tremendously by his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lawrence and Wilmer Rippe and a sister Roine Tegethoff.

Samuel Wayne Jackson

Samuel Wayne Jackson, 96, passed away Monday, July 29, 2019 at his home in rural Athol, KS.

Wayne was born October 12, 1922 in Phillips County, KS, the son of Arthur Jacob and Olive Ann (Torgerson) Jackson. on February 28, 1949 he married Vera May Biehn in Franklin, NE, to this union they were blessed with seven children, Wanetta, Wanda, Jimmy, Bernice, Jerry, Linda and Dawn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Warren Arthur, Wilber Jacob, Eugene Denton and Raymond Leroy Jackson, two sisters, Erma Aileen Wiley, Dorothy Mae Henry, a daughter-in-law, Elaine Jackson, son-in-law, Val Reed, and three grandsons, Nate Graebast, Phillip Wayne Webber and Jerry Webber Jr., granddaughter Karen Spaulding and a granddaughter-in-law, Kristy Loschen.

Verna Leona Disque

Verna Leona Disque, 90, passed away July 29, 2019, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born August 20, 1928, at Claflin, to George and Leeda (Lyons) Ehly.

A lifetime resident of Claflin, Verna attended Claflin Grade School and graduated from Claflin High School in 1946. She then pursued higher education at Brown-Mackie Business College, Salina, and employment with T.B. Kelly and Conner Law Firm, Great Bend. Verna married Charles Disque Sept. 30, 1951, at Claflin, and farmed side by side in the Claflin and Bushton areas.

Verna was a member of Claflin United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Barton County Historical Society. She enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada with various travel groups, and cherished her time with family.

Survivors include husband, Charles, of 68 blessed years; two daughters Janet Sellens and husband David of Olathe, and Corrine Clark and husband Jim of Hays; two grandchildren, Jaclyn and Derek; and great granddaughter, Dhara.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2019, at Claflin United Methodist Church, Claflin, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Interment will follow at the Claflin Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 1, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Doris D. Pfannenstiel

Doris D. Pfannenstiel, 94, of Hays, KS passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at Via Christi Village, Hays.

She was born April 22, 1925, in Pfeifer, KS to George and Barbara (Breit) Meder. On April 20, 1963, she married Edward M. Pfannenstiel at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays, KS. He preceded her in death in 1999.
