Carol Virginia Houston, age 76, passed away on Friday, May 29, 2015 at her home in Tribune, Kansas. Carol was born February 22, 1939 in Syracuse, Kansas, the daughter of Oren Johnston & Vivian Marcella (Ford) Gentry. A lifetime resident of Greeley County, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

LaVonne L. Buehler

LaVonne L. Buehler, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Salina Regional Hospital in Salina, Kansas.

LaVonne was born on January 18, 1938, in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Delmar M. and LaVada (Strain) Barton. She grew up and attended local schools in Russell. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Larry G. Buehler on November 12, 1954, in Russell. From this union LaVonne and Larry were blessed with 3 children, sons Brad and Ken and a daughter Rhonda. Larry preceded LaVonne in death on August 22, 2002. LaVonne was an excellent homemaker and dedicated her life to taking care of her husband and children. She was a member of the Elks and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, art, crocheting and was an avid Denver Broncos fan.

Surviving family include her son Brad G. Buehler and wife Vicki of Lakewood, Colorado; daughter Rhonda Storey and husband David of Swisher, Iowa; and son Ken Buehler and wife Tonya of Russell; 8 grandchildren Alicia, Derek, Korey Buehler, Kyle, Kevin and Katelyn Storey, Kari and Adam Buehler; 5 great grandchildren and a brother Darrell Barton of Overland Park, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Larry and a daughter Katherine Buehler.

A funeral service to honor LaVonne’s life will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, June 02, 2015, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary Chapel in Russell with Pastor Dale Lane officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. Monday, June 01, 2015, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening. Memorials may be given to the Morrison House of Salina or St. Jude’s Children Hospital and sent in care of the mortuary. Kent Albee Lapham

Kent Albee Lapham, 76, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.

Kent was born on July 11, 1938 in Caledonia, Minnesota, the son of Grant T. and Mabel C. (Albee) Lapham. He grew up on the Portland Prairie area near Eitzen, Minnesota and graduated from _Caledonia High School in 1956. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with an Associates in Mortuary Science.

He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Lois Ann Ostermann on June 26, 1960 in Henderson, Minnesota. Kent and Lois lived in many different areas of the country including Anoka, Minnesota, Douglas, Wyoming, Sacramento, California, and Fairbanks, Alaska. He owned Stark-Lapham Funeral Home in Douglas, Wyoming and Glenrock mortuary in Glenrock Wyoming, and also served as the Converse County Coroner. They eventually made their permanent home in Russell, Kansas in January 2000 when they took over the Russell and Plainville Funeral Homes.

Kent was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and retired from the business in 2008. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell, and active participant of the United Methodist Men. Over his lifetime he was active in many organizations including the Kansas Funeral Directors Association, Rotary Club, Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Served as President for the Douglas Area Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, 4-H, and a Master Gardner. In 2014 he was presented with his 50 year pin for Masons and Eastern Star. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling, photography, and was a toy tractor collector. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and members of his community.

Surviving family include his wife of 55 years, Lois of the home, daughters Heather Jarvi and husband Jim of Overland Park, Kansas and Heidi Whitehurst and husband Keith of Olathe, Kansas; sister Eileen Felton and husband Gilbert of Northfield, Minnesota; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Lapham of Caledonia, Minnesota; and 2 grandchildren Emilia Anne and Joshua James Jarvi.

He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother Lyle L. Lapham.

A celebration of Kent’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 02, 2015, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell, with Pastor John Thompson officiating. Military rites will be performed at the church by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240. Burial will take place on Thursday, June 04, 2015, at the Portland Prairie Cemetery near Caledonia, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, June 01, 2015, at the mortuary with family to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Monday evening. Adella B. Dodrill

Adella B. Dodrill, 98, Wichita, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Wellspring of Wichita.

She was born October 21, 1916 to Jim and Emma (Lacy) Brumitt in Hays, KS.  She graduated from Hays High School.  She married Roy A. Dodrill Feb. 28, 1937 in Hays, KS.  He died December 19, 1997. She and her husband owned the grocery store in Gove, KS for 16 years. Survivors include sons LeRoy (Donna) of Oregon, Jim (Julie) of Colorado, and Adella Wenzel of Wichita, 3 nieces, 1 nephew, 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Don, daughter-in-law, Linda, son-in-law, Don, and grandson, David. 

A graveside service will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Mt. Allen Cemetery in Hays.

Susan Christine Super

Susan Christine Super, age 32, of Grayland, Washington, passed away May 19, 2015 at her home. She was born May 28, 1982, in Waurika, Oklahoma. Her parents are David and Treva Super.

She was a 2001 graduate of Trego Community High School, WaKeeney. Upon graduating high school, Susan served our country in the United States Army. Susan was a lover of all animals, big and small. She cherished her pets.

Survivors include her mother, Treva and husband Kirk Johnston of WaKeeney; three brothers, Billy Kenyon and wife Dawn, Cale Super and wife Tiffany, and Lane Super and wife Sheri; one sister, Deborah and husband Kelison Helms. She was preceded in death by her father, David, and a nephew, Taylynn Super.

Mary Ann Yeager

Mary Ann Yeager, age 79, died May 23, 2015 at Piner’s Rehabilitation Facility in Napa, California. She was born May 24, 1936 near Brownell, Kansas, the daughter of Alexander and Katharine Gross Filbert.

She graduated from Bazine High School in 1954, and received a Bachelors Degree in business from Fort Hays State University. She taught business courses at Fort Hays State University, while her husband was completing his BS degree. She was then employed by Standard Oil of California/Chevron as a budgetary analyst in late 1962. She retired in early 1980 to live in Napa, California until her passing. Mary was a devoted sewing and needlework enthusiast, and an avid collector of various sewing items. She was a member of many sewing organizations, both local and international.

On August 17, 1958 she married Gerald E. Yeager in Bazine, Kansas at the Bazine Methodist Church. To this union no children were born. Her husband, Gerald, survives in Napa, CA. Other survivors include a sister, Judy Boor, Irwin, PA; two sisters-in law, Ruth Filbert, Hutchinson, KS and Cora Lee Filbert, Charleston, IL; two nieces and six nephews, and families.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Edward Filbert and Duane Filbert.

Viewing will be Thursday, June 4, 9:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Funeral Services will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Friday, June 5, 2015, 1:30 P.M.

Burial at Bazine Cemetery.

Dell Keil

Dell Keil, 90, Hays, died on May 27, 2015. He was born on May 28, 1924, in Minneapolis, KS, to Dell Dane and Emma (Breedlove) Keil.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He married Mary Ann Krannawitter in Hoxie, KS, on April 15, 1950. They settled in Hays and Dell worked for Midwest Energy for over 30 years. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Post #9076 in Hays. He was also an active member of the Hays RC (Radio Control) Flyers Club in Hays.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann, of the home; five children, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Children and their families include: Larry Keil and wife Sandy of Hays and their sons Garrett and Jordan; Janet Karlin and husband Charlie, Overland Park, KS, and their sons Scott and Christopher; Kay Murphy and husband Kevin, Edmond, OK, and their children Carrie Martin and husband John, Kyle Murphy and wife Ashley and children Kate and Harris, and Allison Vaughan and husband Brian and daughter Macy; Jon and Patricia Keil, Charlotte, NC, and sons Colin and Dane; Steve and Dawn Keil, Hays, and daughters Hannah and Alyssa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Don Keil.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:00 am until 9:45, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Friday at the funeral home.

Evelyn Ponstein

Long Island resident Evelyn Ponstein passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at her home in Long Island at the age of 91.

She was born in Denver, CO on February 13, 1924, the daughter of John & Hilda (Anema) Pasterkamp. Her husband, John, preceded her in death on June 5, 2010.

She is survived by her sons, Harlan and Ken Ponstein, both of Long Island, KS; three daughters: Hildreth Butterfield of Colorado Springs, CO, Kathy Kooyenga of Thornton, IL, and Lavonne Ponstein of Phillipsburg, KS; a sister, Dorothy Jeltema of Denver, CO; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church, Phillips County, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery, Phillips County.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 30, from 5 – 9 p.m. and again Sunday, May 31, from noon – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The family will greet friends Saturday evening from 7 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Wanda Janice Day, age 63, of Hays, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 at her home. She was born May 1, 1952 in Owensboro, KY to Obert and Anna Mae (Dunn) Bryant.

She had worked in housekeeping. She enjoyed family time and learning from her grandchildren who taught her to read.

She is survived by a daughter, Candie Day of Hays; a brother, Charles Bryant of Illinois; two sisters, Martha Parish of Hays and Joyce Forbes of Elkhart, KS and 2 grandchildren, Anissia and Cordell Day.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Leonard ‘Red’ Weber

Leonard “Red” Weber, age 83, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas. Leonard was born December 6, 1931 in Ellis County, Kansas to Clara (Flax) and Englebert Weber. He graduated Ellis High School in 1950 and was a lifelong resident of Ellis County. On April 30, 1951 he married Dorothy (Augustine) Weber, who survives him.

Leonard worked in the oil field for 19 years before taking up driving a semi-truck for the next 27 years. He was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church of Ellis and Knights of Columbus. He volunteered to do the grass mowing for St. Mary’s Church and School in Ellis for 17 years.

Games were always a big part of his life. He used that time to teach his family about winning, losing, laughing and sharing. Music was also a very important part of Leonard’s everyday life. He enjoyed playing guitar and harmonica and singing. His precious memory and talent lives on through the musical skills of several sons and grandsons.

As his children grew up, they all received a special gift from Leonard—understanding the value of family. By example Leonard instilled this in each child. To this day they are all still married to their same spouses and blessed with his “importance of family”. Leonard also taught them that it isn’t money that makes them rich – it’s their Faith, their Family and their Friends.

God bless you, Dad, because He sure blessed us.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Ellis. Together they shared 64 years together where they loved and raised six children: Donna Schoenthaler (Doug), Ellis; Patti Unrein (Joe), Hays; Jerry Weber (Joan), Kansas City; Bill Weber (Elaine), Wakeeney; Ed Weber (Charlene), Ellis; and, Curtis Weber (Mary Kay), Ellis. There are 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren to carry on his love. He is also survived by his sister Virginia Robinett, brother George Weber (Charlotte), and step-siblings Agnes Richmeier (Edwin), Alfred Flax (Ida), Paul Flax, and Albertina Fehrenbach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Henry, granddaughter Erin Leigh Weber, and two great-grandsons Peyton Weber and Jonah Schmidtberger.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with a rosary service at 7:00 p.m.

Michael Dean Graf, age 59, of Hays, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015 at his home. He was born June 13, 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas to Edwin and Armella (Stegman) Graf. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1973 and attended Fort Hays State University. He married Roberta “Robbie” Weatherbee August 31, 1991 in Hays, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Robbie of Hays; three daughters, Kendra Dreiling, Kristie May and husband Trevor and Bella all of Hays; three brothers, Jim Graf and wife Kathy of Hutchinson, KS, Tom Graf and wife Shyrlene of Ft.
