Theodore (Ted) John Graff

Theodore (Ted) John Graff, 82, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born August 12, 1932, in St. Theresa, Kansas, to John and Josephine (Werth) Graff.

He was a lifetime farmer and stockman. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas and an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus. He was also a past board member of the Wichita County Historical Society.

On December 27, 1956, he married Darlene Marie Strasser in Garden City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2011.

Survivors include four daughters, Meleesa and Sam Louder of Lubbock, TX, Carla and Danny Geyer of Leoti, KS, Linda and Eugene Klatt of Canton, KS, Jennifer and Marvin Rack of Hays, KS; three sons, Tim and Cathy of Scott City, KS, Kurt and Tammy of Leoti, KS, and Loren and Kristen of Salina, KS; four sisters Armenia Palkowitsh, Henrietta Baker, Thelma DeWitt and Bernita George; fourteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and ten step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Victor, Marcellus, and Justin; two sisters, Delphine Schmidt and Pauline Schiffelbein; and four infant siblings, Ferdinand, Nicholas, Dennis and Mary Alice.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marienthal with Fr. Benjamin Martin presiding. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Marienthal.

Vigil service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marienthal.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Leoti EMS, Wichita County Health Center, or for Catholic masses, all in care of the funeral home.

Paul Richard Griebel

Hays, Kansas – Paul Richard Griebel, age 91, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at his home.

He was born on the farm at Stockton, KS. to Joseph P. and Elizabeth L. (Delaney) Griebel. He married Melinda M. (Dinkel) on April 21, 1952 at Victoria, KS. She died January 11, 2013.

He grew up on a homestead two miles north of Webster, KS. with one brother and one sister. They resided in Rooks County until 1955 then they moved to a farm outside of Collyer, KS. He was a loving father of 11 children. The farm started as a general small farm and over the years, he diversified into chicken, hogs, cattle, and eventually became Griebel and Sons’ Dairy.

He was a very hard worker and worked many odd jobs in addition to farming; such as working on I-70 bridges, helping build the local grain elevator, driving the local school bus, and working at local Co-op to support his family. He was active in the community of Collyer and helped build and renovate both the Collyer Catholic and public school. He was a WWII veteran serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1945. He was a member of the Park, KS. Knights of Columbus. Paul and Melinda managed the dairy farm in Collyer for over 33 years. They retired and moved to Hays, KS in 1988. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church of Collyer, KS and later the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church of Hays, KS. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. Paul and Melinda celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in April 2012.

Survivors include six sons, Francis Griebel and wife, Becky, Lexington, KY; Steve Griebel and wife, Jennifer, Collyer, KS; Roger Griebel and wife, Robin, Hays, KS; Wayne Griebel and wife, Darla, Amarillo, TX; Bill Griebel, Collyer, KS; Joe Griebel, Hays, KS; four daughters, Linda Schroeder and husband, Keith, Hutchinson, KS; Marilyn Rebori and husband, Tim, Bonner Springs, KS; Mary Adams and husband, Tim, Quinlan, TX; Paula Kruse and husband, Shannon, Topeka, KS; ten grandchildren, Randi Griebel and fiancé (Zeke Smith), Craig Griebel and fiancé (Holly Kline), Vanessa (Beto) Morales, Ann Griebel, James (Jazzlynn) Adams, Megan Griebel, Greg Adams, Austin Kruse, Leyton Rebori, and Justin Kruse

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, Lawrence C. Griebel, one sister, Agnes Vehige and one son, Robert Griebel.

Services are at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 1, 2015, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, KS. with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Monday, all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas, 67601. A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Forrest ‘Duane’ Goodwin

Lenexa – Forrest “Duane” Goodwin, a veteran of World War II, died resting peacefully at his retirement home on May 20, 2015 in Lenexa, KS. He was 93.

Mr. Goodwin was born Aug. 14, 1921 in Annapolis, IL to Roy and Belle (Dawson) Goodwin. The family moved to El Dorado, KS in 1925 for Roy to work in the oil fields. Duane attended several different schools before graduating from Bushton High School in 1939.

After graduation, he moved to Hays, KS and worked for Mann’s IGA before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on July 9, 1942 to serve his country in World War II. Duane married Ruth Marie Richmond on Sept. 5, 1943 in Yuma, AZ, on a one day leave from the military. He served in the Marine Air West Coast until June 1945 as a Message Center Non-Commissioned Officer.

From June 1945 until Nov. 30, 1945, Duane was deployed to Emirau Island and Mindanao in the Philippines before being discharged on March 18, 1946 as a Master Technical Sergeant. Mr. Goodwin owned and operated Goodwin Sporting Goods from 1952 until 1992 in Hays, KS, where it can still be found today. Duane was also an active member of First United Methodist Church in Hays.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ruth (Richmond) Goodwin; his two sons: Kent (Sue) of Shawnee, KS and Kyle (Karen) of Topeka, KS; four grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established in honor of Duane at First United Methodist Church, 305 West 7th, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Erwin ‘Erv’ Leiker

Erwin “Erv” Leiker, 81, Great Bend, died Sunday, May 24, 2015 at his home.

He was born February 6, 1934 in Hays the son of Leo and Angela (Klaus) Leiker. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. On November 8, 1958 he married Janet Grace Burgardt in Pfeifer, Kansas. She died May 6, 2000. He was a retired oilfield worker and was a Hays High School graduate. He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Great Bend, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was a loving father and grandfather, and was very kindhearted and ornery. He loved fishing, polka music, the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, and KU athletics.

Survivors include two sons, David Leiker and wife Theresa of Great Bend, and Gary Leiker and wife Lisa of Weir, Kansas, three daughters, Deborah Leiker of Great Bend, Diane Weaver and husband Kirk of Wichita, and Becky Tymiak and husband Terry of Regina, Saskatchewan Canada, four brothers, LaVern Leiker of Great Bend, Ronnie Leiker and wife Diana of Hays, Kenneth Leiker and wife Darlene of Council Grove, KS, and Art Leiker and wife Marilyn of Hays, two sisters Erma Dinges and husband Jim of Schoenchen, and Norine Leiker of Hays, a sister in law Bernetha Leiker of Hays, seven grandchildren, Nathan McDermott, Nicole Donnelly, Amanda McDermott, Jessica Jarvis and husband Richard, Andrew McDermott and wife Christine, Derek Ervin and wife Amanda, and Kaitlyn Leiker, and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, a brother Herbert Leiker, a son in law Dan Ervin, a grandson Daniel Ervin, and a sister in law June Leiker.

Angela D. Augustine, 43, Hays, died Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Olathe Hospice House.

She was born June 8, 1971 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Alfred and Ernestine M. (Lamkin) Augustine. She attended grade school in Munjor for eight years and graduated from Hays High School in 1990. She attended Fort Hays State University for two years majoring in art. She worked at Walmart in Hays for nearly 21 years. She enjoyed playing Bunko and loved traveling and taking photographs while on her trips to such locations as Paris, Las Vegas, and Canada, to name a few. She loved her job, movies, and shopping.

Survivors include her mother Ernestine Augustine, Munjor, two brothers; Doug Philip and wife Gail, Olathe and Bob Philip and wife Bonnie, Munjor, one sister; Patty Werth and husband Kenny, Hays, three half-sisters; Kathleen, Cindy and Pam, six nephews Stephen Philip, Robert Philip, Jr. and wife Sarah, Thomas J. Philip, Daniel and Charlotte Philip, Bill and Chelsea Werth, and Jeremy Werth, eight great nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her father, maternal grandparents Ernest and Hilda Lamkin, paternal grandparents Joe and Cunniqunva Augustine, and a nephew Michael Werth.

Carolyn Kay Engel, 73, Hays, died Friday, May 22, 2015 at her home.

She was born August 9, 1941 in Emmeram, Kansas the daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Karlin) Weigel. She graduated from Ellis High School in 1959.

On May 27, 1967 she married Clayton J. Engel in Hays. He died April 17, 2011. She was a homemaker and previously worked at the Ellis County Noxious Weed Dept., Baxter Laboratories Travenol, and cleaning houses. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and a past member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed polka music, her granddog Maggie, and spending time with her husband, children, and extended family.

Survivors include a son Cliff Engel of Hays, a daughter Crystal Quint and her husband Terry of Hays, a brother Dan Weigel and Trudy Padon of Lakewood, CO, three sisters, Gloria Withers and husband Dean of Denver, Judy Chesney and husband Bob of Woodston, and Sandy Leiker and husband Ernie of Munjor, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister and brother in law Shirley and Alvin Braun, and three nephews and a niece.

Lonnie was born on October 12, 1949, in the Russell City Hospital in Russell, Kansas, the son of George W. and Bonnie (Williams) Wallace. He grew up in Waldo, Kansas and graduated from Paradise High School in Paradise, Kansas. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Rose Marie Williams in May 1969 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Lonnie and Rose raised two son Aaron and Paul Williams. He worked as a service technician working on machinery and hydraulic equipment. He also worked in the asphalt paving industry.

He is survived by his two stepsons Aaron H. Williams and Paul D. Williams; brothers Ronald G. Brozek (Lana) and Donald V. Engle (Betty); sister Marjorie E. Wheeler (Bobby); 5 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rose on November 29, 2013, and sister Vonda J. Powell.

A graveside memorial service to honor Lonnie’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Luray City Cemetery with Reverend Jason Mason officiating.
