Alverna J. (Kisner) Kisslinger, 82, Hays, died Friday, May 15, 2015 at Hays Medical Center.

She was born December 13, 1932 in Cordia, Kansas the daughter of Alvis and Mary (Unrein) Jacobs. She married Tony Kisner on May 25, 1954 in LaCrosse, Kansas. He died on April 7, 1987. Tony and Alverna owned Kisner’s Overhead Door Co. for 28 years. She volunteered her time at ARC Thrift Shop and IHM Funeral Dinner Committee for many years.

On October 25, 2003 she married Ambrose Kisslinger in Ransom, Kansas.
She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella Circle #254, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Sunflower Polka Club and Ladies Red Hat Society. She enjoyed listening and dancing to polka music.

She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, and St. Aloysius Church, Ransom, Kansas. She was very much loved by her family and welcomed everyone she met with her infectious smile. She will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her husband of the home, three sons; Deacon David Kisner and wife Susan of Hays, Roger Kisner of Victoria, Rex Kisner and wife Lena of Hutchinson, one daughter; MaryJane Spresser of Hays, nine grandchildren; Jason Kisner, Brandon Kisner, Laura Kisner, John Kisner, Tyler Spresser, Shayla Spresser, Hailey Kisner, Megan Kisner, and Blake Kisner, one step-granddaughter; Amanda Schuckman, three great-grandchildren and two step great granddaughters, two brothers; Cecil Jacobs of Fort Collins, CO and Alvis Jacobs of Clovis, NM, one sister; Edna Billinger of Hays, one half-brother; Richard Wolf of Russell, KS and one brother in law; Lee Leiker of Hays.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tony, her parents, two sisters; Delorse Leiker, and Bernida Kisner and a daughter in law, Debra Kisner.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m., all on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Victoria, Kansas – Henrietta A. “Hank” Kuhn, age 84, died Friday, May 15, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

She was born July 4, 1930, on the farm North West of Victoria, Kansas to Anton M. and Mary (Hoffman) Kuhn.

She was a homemaker and a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening.

Survivors include two brothers Alfred Kuhn and wife, Lucille, Victoria, KS; Alphonse “Ollie” Kuhn, Victoria, KS; one sister, Lorinda Schmeidler, Hays, KS; and several nephews, nieces , great nephews and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Edmond A. Kuhn, Emil Kuhn, Ermin Kuhn; five sisters, Albina Dreiling, Regina Kuhn, Helen Dinkel, Margaret Kuhn, Olivia Windholz; and two infant sisters, Albina and Mary.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 22, 2015, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas and burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

Delbert Eldene Babcock

Delbert Eldene Babcock, age 84, passed away at his home in Utica, Kansas on May 13, 2015.

He was born on June 10, 1930, the son of Harry and Myrtle Roeske Babcock.

He was a farmer for most of his life and was in the U.S. Air Force. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 380 and Ransom VFW Post 7972.

On June 13, 1953, he married Letha Harvey. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, Keene (Linda) Babcock, Peck KS, Barry (Pam) Babcock, Hutchinson, KS; daughter, Cindy Babcock and fiance Doug, LaCrosse, KS; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gregory Babcock; and brother, Kenneth Babcock.

Cremation has taken place.

Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, May 19, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at United Methodist Church, Utica.

Fairie I. Gaines

Phillipsburg resident Fairie I. Gaines passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 96.

She was born in Phillips County on Sept. 14, 1918, the daughter of Alvin & Rose (McDermed) Plymesser. Her husband, Leo Gaines, and two granddaughters, Monica Pineda and Mona Petersen, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Al Gaines, of Smith Center, KS; daughters, Sallie Jansonius of Phillipsburg, Idris Shannon of Miltonvale, KS, Arlis Schild of Sacramento, CA and Connie Martin of Ft. Worth, TX; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Monday, May 18, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Dave Pugh officiating.

Visitation will be Saturday from 5-9 p.m. and Sunday from noon – 9 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Signa Ann (Paintin) Hinshaw

Signa Ann (Paintin) Hinshaw, age 62, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at her home in WaKeeney. She was born March 26, 1953 in Hoxie, Kansas to David James and Delores Lucile (Diebert) Paintin.

Signa was a graduate of Morland High School. On September 30, 1972, she was united in marriage to Kent Eugene Hinshaw at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, rural Studley. They enjoyed 42 years of marriage together. Signa was known among her family and friends for her talent in the kitchen, both for her cooking and baking. She loved to grow both vegetables and flowers in her garden. One of her favorite things to do with her husband was to go on country drives, where she said she loved to listen to the wheat grow. Listening to music, watching wildlife, and spending time with her grandkids were among things she cherished. Signa was very giving of her time as a volunteer at her church. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Kent; her mother, Delores of Hoxie; 3 daughters, Scarlett Lynn Jackson of WaKeeney, Christina Lucile Weigel of Quinter, and Victoria Leigh (Jesse) Sanders of Topeka; 5 grandchildren, Hailey Christine Weigel, Taylor Nicole Weigel, Vanessa Claire Weigel, Grace Kaye Ann Sanders, and Allison Sanders; and 2 sisters, Katherine (Lawrence) Simon of Morland, and Linda (Stan) Blair of St. Geneva, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her father, and sister, Barbara Paintin.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, rural Studley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joan H. Rumpel

Joan H. Rumpel, 75, Hays, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Hays Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born, November 16, 1939 in Frankfort, New York the daughter of Earl J. and Helen (Scott) Hubbell.

On August 26, 1961 she married Max L. Rumpel, PhD in Utica, New York. She graduated from Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica, NY, and received her BS degree in Chemistry from St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY in 1960. She came to Kansas when she was one of only three females, out of a class of 50, who were selected for a graduate assistantship in chemistry at the University of Kansas.

While at KU, she met her future husband Max, and they returned to his native western Kansas when he was offered a job in the Chemistry Department at Fort Hays State in 1961. She stayed home to raise their children during their first few years in Hays, and then decided “I want to try something different.”

She earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration from FHSU in 1977 and joined the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting at FHSU where she attained the rank of Assistant Professor and taught accounting for 34 years. She was a Certified Public Accountant and was the advisor of FHSU’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business fraternity for more than 30 years until health issues forced her to step aside. She was active on campus in several organizations, including stints on the Alumni Board and the Athletic Advisory Board.

She was involved in scholarship committees in both her department and university-wide, and co-authored articles in several publications. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, the Messiah Board of Directors, and the Messiah Lutheran Church Altar and Ladies Guilds. A lifelong lover of music, she led the Messiah Children’s Choir for many years, and was a substitute organist at the church. She also taught Sunday School, Midweek and Vacation Bible School, and served in many other parish leadership roles. She was a member of the FHSU Faculty Wives, the American Association of University Women, and the Hubbell Family Historical Society.

She was a voracious reader of mysteries and history, an accomplished bridge player, and an avid sports fan following FHSU athletics, KU athletics, the Hays Larks, and the New York Yankees. She was a prolific needle worker, knitter, and quilter, who shared her creations with a multitude of friends and family. She relished traveling to visit family, historic sites, zoos and wildlife parks, and was always on the lookout for sources of information to add to her voluminous genealogical knowledge.

Survivors include her husband, of the home, a son Craig Rumpel of Charlottesville, VA, daughter Karen Rumpel-Lopez and husband Bart of Riverside, CA, a brother Scott Hubbell and wife Nancy of Inverness, FL, and two grandchildren Michael and Alexis Lopez.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother John Hubbell.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Hays. A private burial will follow in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, north of Ellis, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to the church, the FHSU Athletic Department, or to the FHSU College of Business and Entrepreneurship. David M. Herl

David M. Herl, age 64 of Independence, MO passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at Promise Hospital and Skilled Nursing center in Overland Park, KS. He was born October 13, 1950 in Hays, KS to Melvin Joseph and Esther Marie (Sauer) Herl. He graduated from Hays High in 1968 and attended Washburn University.

David spent his adult life in the Kansas City, MO area working in restaurant management and ownership. He owned several PoFolks restaurants in the Kansas City area for many years. His passion was muscle cars, baseball and APA Pool. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by four sisters, Cynthia J.(Herl) Brown of Independence, MO, Jacquline S. (Herl) Bisterfeldt of Las Vegas, NV, Melissa M. (Herl) Lacey and husband David of Costa Mesa, CA and Stephanie L. (Herl) Kramer and husband Bill of Hays, KS; a brother, Mark M. Herl and wife Rachel of Hays, KS; seven nieces, Barbara (Brown) Halepeska and husband Chad and children Brianna, and Kiefer, Nicole (Bisterfeldt) Rainey and husband Aaron and daughter Madilynn Elizabeth, Danielle Bisterfeldt, Esther Lacey, Amanda (Kramer) Brown and husband Theodore and son Quinten, Sarah (Kramer) Pfeifer and husband Ryan and Elena Herl; two nephews, Ivan Lacey and Jason Kramer.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Irene Lorene (Hrabe) Russ, 97, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Saturday evening, May 9, 2015 at Main Street Manor in Russell.

Irene was born June 12, 1917 in rural Rooks County, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph, Jr. and Agnes (Harmacek) Hrabe. She grew up in Rooks County near Plainville, Kansas in the Twin Mound area. She attended school at the Hrabe School House in Twin Mound and the Plainville High School.

Irene was united in marriage to Everett V. Russ on September 16, 1937 in Stockton, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children, Vickie and Roger. Everett was in the military, so the first part of the marriage they lived in Wichita, Kansas, Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, Woodston, Kansas, and in 1953 they settled in Natoma, Kansas.

Irene was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. During her husband’s military years she worked for Woolworths and Montgomery Wards. Then from 1959 to 1963 she was a cook at Natoma High School.

Irene attended the Presbyterian Church of Natoma. She was a member of E.H.U., Order of the Eastern Star, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and the Osborne County Women’s Church Group. She enjoyed gardening, sewing with hand and machine quilts, tending her flower beds, canning and doing crafts.

Surviving family include her daughter, Vickie S. Russ of Russell, Kansas; son, Roger Russ (Marilynn) of Ottumwa, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tamara Conrad, Torra Dinkel and Alissa Russ; six great grandchildren, Bailey, Bethany, Braxton, Aiden, Isaac and Blake. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Everett, eight brothers, five sisters, numerous nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Irene’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Burial will follow at the Plainville City Cemetery in Plainville, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Wednesday at the mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM. Memorials have been established with the Russell V.F.W. Velma D. Base

Velma D. Base, age 86, died May 9, 2015 as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Pratt County, Kansas. She was born in Finney County, Kansas on August 21, 1928 the daughter of Charlie and Lens Unruh Base. She worked as a school teacher.

Survivors include: Two Brothers: Charlie Base of Kingman, Kansas, Clayton Base of Concord, Oklahoma; Three Sisters: Neva Stauffer of Springfield, Missouri; Vivian Gaylord of Lee Summit, Missouri, Evelyn A. Renfro of Lee Summit, Missouri; Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Luella Auten.

Eugenia Lavina Palkowitsh

Eugenia Lavina Palkowitsh, age 93, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Wichita County LTC in Leoti, Kansas. Eugenia was born May 8, 1922 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Lloyd I. & Alice Floe Betts Walk. She was a 1941 graduate of Wichita County High School, a lifetime resident of Wichita County and a farm wife.

Eugenia was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, St Anthony Alter Society, both of Leoti and the Daughters of Isabella at Marienthal, Kansas.

On April 11, 1944 she married John Palkowitsh at Marienthal, Kansas. John passed away on November 8, 1990 at Leoti, Kansas.
