Marc R. Kessler

Marc R. Kessler, age 61, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at his home in Scott County, Kansas. He was born on October 12, 1953 in North Island, California, the son of Hilary G. Kessler and Donnis D. Neuenschwander. A resident of Scott County, Kansas since 2007 moving from Oklahoma, he was a farmer.

Survivors include his Two Sons – Kristopher Kessler of Hiawatha, Kansas, Jason Kessler of Denver, Colorado, One Daughter – Jill Kessler of Denver, Colorado, Father – Hilary & Connie Kessler of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sisters – Jana Harkness of Garden City, Kansas, Lori Montgomery of Atlanta, Georgia and Nine Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Mother and One Son – Brent Kessler.

Memorial Services will be held at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015.

Memorials may be given to the Park Lane Nursing Home in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

There will be no calling times.

Ralph Schmeidler

Hays, Kansas – Ralph Schmeidler, age 84, died Thursday, April 2, 2015, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas.

He was born February 24, 1931, on the family farm by Severin, Kansas, to Anton and Anna (Sander) Schmeidler. He married Elsie (Pfannenstiel) on October 17, 1955, in Hays, Kansas.

He was a farmer South of Ogallah until moving to Hays in 2014. He was a graduate of Hays High School, a U.S. Army veteran and served in Korea. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and V.F.W. both of Ellis. He enjoyed the life on the farm, the outdoors and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Schmeidler, of the home; three daughters, Karen Herl and husband, Ron, Ogallah, KS; Brenda Landis and husband, Rick, Brookville, KS; Cheryl Stramel and husband, Gene, Hays, KS; two brothers, Lawrence Schmeidler and wife, Dolores, Catharine, KS; Anton Schmeidler, Hays, KS; four sisters, Sophia Walter, Catharine, KS; Lillian Fisher and husband, Victor, Hays, KS; Anna Lessor and husband, Lavern, Great Bend, KS; Gloria VonLintel and husband, Bob, Vincent, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron Herl (Shelby Gottschalk), Alyssa Weigel (Cole), Erica Keener (Johnny), Angela Gross (Tanner), Shane Stramel (Lacey); two great grandchildren and one on the way, Jaelyn Keener and Briella Stramel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Edwin Schmeidler and one sister, Irene Dreiling.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 6, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ellis, Kansas. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ellis, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post #9076.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. Monday all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Leona Winterlin

Leona Winterlin, 83, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Sterling House in Great Bend, Kansas.

She was born in 1931 in Shickley, Nebraska, the daughter of Dan and Elsie (Birkey) Roth. She married DeWayne Winterlin on August 21, 1954 in Iowa City, Iowa. He died June 20, 2000. She attended Wheaton College and Moody Bible Institute.

She was an LPN and worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Hospital and later at nursing homes in Kansas. She was a founding member and deacon of North Oak Community Church, Hays. She was very active in the church children’s ministry for many years. She was a great Mother and was known for her hospitality, and her love of food.

Survivors include three daughters; Cheryl Dockum and husband Don of Norman, OK, Beth Reimer and husband Todd of Arlington, TX, and Karla Frink and husband Troy of St. John, Kansas, two brothers; Merle Roth of Loveland, CO and Eldon Roth and wife Becky of Mountain Home, AR, seven grandchildren; Carson Dockum and wife Brittany, Brooke Dockum, Chase Reimer, Lauren Reimer, TJ Frink, Grant Frink, and Justin Frink, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers; Roy, Ivan, and Allen Roth and a sister Viola Wilkins, and a sister in law Alice Roth.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Illa M. Johnson

Glade resident Illa M. Johnson passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 77.

She was born Feb. 27, 1938 in Phillips County, the daughter of William & Delphia (Bretton) Chestnut.

Survivors include her husband, Doyle Johnson, of the home in Glade; sons, Curtis, of Plainville, KS and Kelly, of Lawrence, KS; daughter, Janet Wahlmeier, of Burlington, KS; and six grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Sat., April 4, at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Church of God, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Tim Kraft officiating.

Friends may sign the book Friday, April 3, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Etta Fern Ashcraft

Etta Fern Ashcraft, age 83, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on July 15, 1931 in Copeland, Kansas, the daughter of Spencer and Jessie Shuman Glover. A lifetime resident of Limon, Colorado, she moved to Scott City, Kansas in March of 2014. She was a homemaker and an avid painter.

She was a member of the Central Bible Church in Remah, Colorado.

On December 28, 1946 she married Walter A. Ashcraft in Limon, Colorado. He passed away on May 31, 1997 in Satanta, Kansas.

Survivors include her One Son – Terry & Jayne Ashcraft of Limon, Colorado, One Daughter – Diana & Dick Jennison of Healy, Kansas, Three Brothers – Dale & Lynn Glover of Arizona, Edward & Linda Glover of Limon, Colorado, Gary & Georgiana Glover of Calhan, Colorado, One Sister – Edna Mae Boegher of Dodge City, Kansas, One Nephew – Mike & Heather Glover of Washington, Two Nieces – Dana Cranston of Park, Kansas, Donna Glover of New Mexico, Fourteen Grandchildren and Eight Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Two Brothers,Two Sisters and One Granddaughter.

Memorial Services will be held at Love Funeral Home in Limon, Colorado on Friday, April 10, 2015.

Memorials can be given to the American Cancer Society.

Shirley L. Kats

Phillipsburg resident Shirley L. Kats passed away April 1, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 74.

She was born October 18, 1940 in Norton County, KS the daughter of Claire & Leona (Archer) Alexander.

Survivors include her husband Derek of the home; 3 daughters; Kathy Nimz of Littleton, CO, Sherry Woodside of Prairie View & Vicky Allen of Fredrickburg, VA; her brother, Charles Alexander of Norton; 2 sisters: Sharon Posvar of Beaver City, NE & Sandra Salaz of Salt Lake City, UT & 2 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sat. April 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the Luctor Christian Reformed Church with Dr. Dave Rozema & Pastor Aaron Rust officiating. Burial will follow in the Luctor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 9:00 Thursday & 9:00 to 9:00 Friday at the funeral home.

Reginald Lipp

Reginald Lipp passed away peacefully at age 84 on March 30, 2015, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

Reginald was born February 26th, 1931 to Frank and Regina (Braun) Lipp. He worked and lived his entire life on the Collyer farm homesteaded in 1902 by his grandfather, Phillip Lipp.

On June 7, 1954 he married Betty Nemechek of WaKeeney, Kansas. Throughout their years together on the farm, they raised dairy and beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and crops. To this union, they were blessed with 3 daughters, Cindi, Lori and Susan. Throughout the years, Reginald enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He will be fondly remembered for his keen sense of humor, generosity, devotion to his family, and being a life-long farmer.

Reginald is survived by his wife, Betty, daughters Cindi (Gary) Stefanatz of Denver, Colorado, Lori (Chuck) Mattke of Ogallah and Susan (Rob) Bestgen of Rochester, Minnesota. Grandchildren include Kristin Stefanatz, Casey (Kambi) Mattke and their children Alexa and Gavin, Melia Hollis and her son Jaylen, and Josh, Jessica, Alex, Ben, Seth, Maggie and Brady Bestgen. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Bestgen.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon him. Blessed be his memory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 2, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Collyer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Norlena “Nora” Bertha Pullmann, 92, of Kearney, Nebraska and formerly Winfield, KS died March 26, 2015 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney with Rev. Duane Duley officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to services Monday morning at the Church. Graveside services and burial were held Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at 3:30 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery in Winfield, KS. with Rev. Rick Hathaway officiating at the grave.

She was born on February 28, 1923 in Altamont, Illinois to Charles and Bertha Vandre. She grew up in Springfield, Illinois and graduated from Feitshans High School.

In August of 1942, she married Rev. Martin A. Pullmann, a recent graduate of the Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, IL. Norlena and Martin served together in ministry to our Lord in congregations in Durham, Hoxie, Kinsley, Leavenworth, Topeka, and Winfield, Kansas. They enjoyed their retirement years together in Winfield, KS.

After her children had all graduated from college, Nora returned to college herself, graduating Summa Cum Laude from St. John’s College in Winfield.

Nora loved to sing and was active in the church choir. She was artistically gifted and enjoyed drawing and painting folk art objects and tole painting. She loved ministering to shut-ins and always brought along a homemade loaf of banana bread.

Mrs. Pullmann is survived by her sister Mary Kane and husband George of Katy, TX; daughter Jerelyn Grove and husband Jim of Minnetonka, MN; son Ray Pullmann and wife Karen of Sugar Land, TX; son Fred Pullmann and wife Lynne of Hollister, MO; son Mark Pullmann and wife Marlene of Kearney, NE and by eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Pullmann was preceded in death by her husband Martin, and by her sisters Mildred, Irene and Gertrude.

Carey A. Schulte

Hays, Kansas – Carey A. Schulte, age 56, former Hays and Russell resident, died Friday, March 27, 2015, at Via Christi Hospital/St. Francis Campus Wichita, Kansas.

She was born July 8, 1958, Hays, Kansas, to John E. and Amelia (Dinkel) Schulte.

She grew up in Victoria and attended the Anderson School of Hope at Victoria until it closed in the 1970’s. She was a client with Development Services of Northwest Kansas for over 25 years and lived in Norton, Hill City, Ellis and Hays.

Survivors include two brothers, Damian Schulte and wife, Alicia, Escondido, CA; Regis Schulte and wife Brenda, Wichita, KS; one sister, Claudia Hertel and husband Denis, Great Bend, KS; three nephews, Philip Hertel, Chris Hertel, Matt Schulte; three nieces, Kim Schulte, Melissa Fehling, Alison Schulte; and seven great nephew and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

Francis R. ‘Frank’ Rohleder

Francis R. “Frank” Rohleder, 86, Hays, died Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Via Christi Village.

He was born September 3, 1928 in Hays the son of Peter N. and Clara (Toepfer) Rohleder. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy, Hays, in 1947. After graduation, he was a member of the Kansas National Guard. On October 4, 1948 he married Frances “Francie” Herman in Hays.

He was an electrician for over 54 years and owned and operated Rohleder Electric in Hays. He worked for Jay Stewart Electric before purchasing the business. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed watching college basketball and football, gardening and working in his yard, crafting yard art to display in his yard for every holiday, was an avid cook, and was passionate about fishing and camping. He was the self-proclaimed “King of the Lake” from 1958 until 2004. He cherished spending time with his family, friends, and grandchildren. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Third Degree St. Joseph Council #1325 Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, two sons Eugene “Gene” Rohleder and Pete Rohleder and wife Terri, all of Hays, six daughters Mary Kay Dechant and husband Steven of Hutchinson, Chris McNiece and husband Jim of Wichita, Conni Dreher and husband Marion of Hays, Joan Gray of Wichita, Gloria Rader and husband Bob of Hays, and Dianna Mans and husband Joe of Topeka, a sister Mary Strunk of Wichita, thirteen grandchildren Jason Dechant, Aaron Dechant, Sarah Osburn, Josh McNiece, Jamie Gibson, Austin Gray, Jordan Gray, Scott Rader, Brian Rader, Nathan Rohleder, Nicole Rohleder, Kelli Mans, and Katie Mans, seven great grandchildren Sophie Dechant, Ella Dechant, Luke Osburn, Tyler Osburn, Caleb Osburn, Gavin Rader, and Oliver Rader, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers Ben, Otto, Alfred, and Lawrence Rohleder, and two sisters Helen Riedel and Laurina Kuhn.

Funeral services will be at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 500 E. 19th Street, Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday and from 2:00 pm until 3:45 on Wednesday all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Knights of Columbus Council #1325 rosary at 7:00, all on Tuesday at the funeral home.
