Kathleen Mae ‘Kathy’ Schukman

Kathleen Mae “Kathy” Schukman, 60, Hays, died Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Hospice House of Kansas City.

She was born February 23, 1955 in Hays, Kansas the daughter of Vernon “Vern” and Dorothy (Huber) Herrman. She graduated from Hays High School in 1973 and received her BS and MS degrees in English from Fort Hays State University.

She was a retired high school English teacher having taught at Skyline School USD #438 in Pratt, Kansas and Hays High School USD #489. On September 19th, 2005 she married Kevin Schukman in Great Bend, Kansas. She was currently serving on the board of directors of the Hays Kiwanis Club and the Hays Public Library. She was a former board member of the Hays Arts Council, was very active in the community, and enjoyed being a high school forensics judge. She also enjoyed sewing and quilt making, was an avid reader, and loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, of the home in Hays, her parents, Vern and Dorothy Herrman of Hays, a daughter Carrie Pfannenstiel of Hays, two step daughters, Sarah Smith and husband Josh and Suzanne Whitaker, all of Hays, four brothers, John Herrman and wife Terri of St. Louis, MO, Dave Herrman and wife Deanna of Hays, Ron Herrman and wife Cheryl of Russell, and Marc Herrman of Hays, and four grandchildren, Carter Jones, Laylah Pfannenstiel, Kolyn Pfannenstiel, and Ella Smith.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Celebration Community Church, 5790 230th Ave. Private family burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested in Kathy’s memory to the Friends of St. Anne’s Girls’ School in Kapkemich, Kenya or to her grandchildren’s college fund, in care of the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Edward F. ‘Eddie’ Schumacher

Edward F. “Eddie” Schumacher, age 84, of Hays, passed away Friday, March 27, 2015 in Hays.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Visitation will be Tuesday 4 PM – 8 PM and Wednesday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A parish vigil service will be 6:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Judith C. ‘Judy’ Brull

Judith C. “Judy” Brull, 70, Hays, died Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Alders Gate Village in Topeka, Kansas.

She was born February 19, 1945 in Thomas County, Kansas the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth “Betty” (Halbleib) Broeckelman.

After graduating from High School she went on to Fort Hays State University where she received her BS degree in Home Economics. On December 26, 1968 she married Kenneth “Ken” Brull in Angelus, Kansas. She was a librarian and homemaker working in the Children’s Department of the Hays Public Library. She briefly taught Home Economics at Marian High School in Hays. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, her dogs, worrying, gardening and canning, playing cards and games, and visiting with friends and family.

Survivors include her husband, of the home in Hays, a son Steve Brull and wife Sheresa of Ellis, Kansas, a daughter Tina Ball and husband Ken of Topeka, Kansas, a brother Lee Broeckelman and wife Barb of Grinell, Kansas, four sisters, Phyllis Rueschhoff, Joan Ostmeyer and husband Rick, and Lois Stafford and husband Don, all of Hays, and Barbara Dayvault of Sacramento, CA, and three grandchildren Grace, Eliana, and Henry Brull of Ellis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Edie Broeckelman, and two brothers-in-law Day Rueschhoff and Doug Powers.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St. Burial will be in the Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery, west of Hays. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 pm on Monday and from 9:00 am until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home.

Helen Hillman

Helen Hillman, 94, died March 25, 2015 at Trego County Long Term Care. She was born January 9, 1921, to parents Otis and Hazel (Zimmerman) Sproul, on a farm near Edmond, Kansas. She attended Edmond High School, and then completed a teaching course at Lenora High School. She attended Fort Hays State University. She taught school in the rural schools of Norton County.

Helen married Kenneth Hillman on December 21, 1942 at De Ridder, Louisiana. He preceded her in death in 1987. In her life, she was a telephone operator, a teacher and a nurse’s aide at Trego County Long Term Care before retiring in Ogallah, Kansas in 1990. Helen was a member of the Ogallah Christian Church, the Ogallah Friendly Dozen, the Trego County AARP, and was an active 4-H youth leader for many years.

Survivors include one son, Stanley Hillman and his wife Sheryl of Ransom; two daughters, Karen and husband Ronald Deutscher of WaKeeney, and Lisa and husband Marvin Whipple of Pawnee Rock. She had seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Lloyd Sproul; and a sister Ruth McMulkin.

Services will be held at the Ogallah Christian Church on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., with burial following in the Ogallah Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to service time at the church in Ogallah.

Respecting the wishes of the deceased, in lieu of flowers or contributions, the family suggests completing a random act of kindness for a neighbor, friend or stranger.

Alma Jean Sparkman

Alma Jean Sparkman, 78, Hays, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Via Christi Villages.

She was born January 16, 1937 in Zion, Illinois, the daughter of Albert E. and Julia J. (Kyndberg) Warren.

She received her BS degree in Elementary Education from Bob Jones University and her MS degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University. While attending Bob Jones University she met her future husband and on June 4, 1959 she married Pastor Lynn L. Sparkman in Zion, Illinois.

Together, they founded High Plains Baptist Church in Hays, Kansas. She was an elementary school teacher, teaching multiple grades at High Plains Christian School for 20 years. She also did substitute teaching in USD 489. She was well-known for her hospitality, and she loved to cook and graciously welcome people into her home.

She was very active in community events and loved to travel to see her family, children, and grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, David Sparkman and wife Carrie of Eden Prairie, MN, Jon Sparkman and wife Lisa of Pelham, NH, and Scot Sparkman and wife April of Keyes, Oklahoma, five brothers, Bill Warren and wife Sharran of Winthrop Harbor, IL, Jim Warren and wife JoNancy of Zion, IL, Charlie Warren and wife Dawn of Beach Park, IL, John Warren and wife Sue of Winthrop Harbor, IL, and Ron Warren and wife Wanda of Pleasant Prairie, WI, ten grandchildren, Zachary and wife Kate, Nicole, Lauren, Taylor, Joshua, Rebecca, Austin, Kaeleigh, Grant, and Grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband who died on December 23, 2010.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the High Plains Baptist Church, 2700 Canterbury Drive, Hays. Burial will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:30 until 6:30 pm at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, and on Saturday from 10:00 am until service time at the church.

Tonya Migchelbrink

Tonya Migchelbrink, 32, of Atwood, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015. She was born Oct 29, 1982 to Michael Migchelbrink and Linda (Bowles) Ginther in Atwood, KS.

Preceded in death by her father, Michael; grandparents, Bernard Bowles, Patty Polock, Kenneth and Elaine Migchelbrink.

Leland L. Ewing

Phillipsburg resident Leland L. Ewing passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at his home in rural Phillipsburg at the age of 76.

He was born October 29, 1938, in Phillips County to Forrest & Opal (Thompson) Ewing.

His wife, Charlene, preceded him in death on March 27, 2014.

Survivors include his son, Randy, daughter, Melany Jackson, and half-brother, Gale Ewing, all of Phillipsburg; and 4 grandchildren:  Adam and Savannah Ewing, Shawn Cotton, and Steven Cotton & fiancee’, Alex.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hillsdale Cemetery, Phillips County, with military honors by the U.S. Air Force.

Visitation will be Wed. & Thurs. from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 7 – 8 p.m. Thursday evening.

Clarence Lang

Clarence Lang, 96, Hays, died Monday, March 23, 2015 at his home.

He was born March 23, 1919 on the family farm east of Hays the son of Anthony and Catherine (Wiesner) Lang.

He graduated from Victoria High School in 1937 and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving with the 310th Medical Battalion in northern Africa, Italy, and Switzerland.

On May 20, 1946 he married Melinda Geist at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria. He was a farmer and stockman and worked for the Ellis County ASCS office for fourteen years. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the St. Nicholas third degree Knights of Columbus Council #10044, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the Hays VFW Post #9076.

He enjoyed playing pinochle with family and friends, loved sports – especially baseball, and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports. He truly possessed a deep love for his wife and family.

Survivors include his wife Melinda, of the home, three sons Lloyd Lang and wife Iris of Victoria, Dennis Lang and wife Vera of Wichita, and Terry Lang and wife Ruth of Hays, one daughter Patty Wolf and husband Dan of Hays, one brother George Lang of Hays, one sister Leona Walters of Borger, TX, thirteen grandchildren; John Lang and wife Stacey, Greg Lang and wife LaNae, Mark Lang and wife Amanda, Gwen Hodges and husband Daniel, Kevin Lang and wife Tasha, Jeff Lang, Cliff Lang and wife Cassie, Brandon Lang and wife Phuong, Brittany Lang, Brock Lang, Jenna Lang, Scott Wolf and Brad Wolf and wife Kristin, and twenty one great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sons Donald and Terrence, three brothers Anthony, Ralph, and Isadore Lang, a sister Oliva Pfannenstiel, and a great granddaughter Katie Lang.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW honor guard will be in the St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 pm on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 until 6:30 pm, a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm, a parish vigil service will be at 6:30, followed by a combined Third and Fourth degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, all on Thursday at the funeral home.

Carola K. (Karst) Gaither

Carola K. (Karst) Gaither, 83, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015, in Salina, Kansas.

She was born on May 8, 1931, in Russell, Kansas. She worked with her husband, John, on the family ranch and in their construction business. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and then in later years on “Cousin Trips”, socializing with friends and family, reminiscing with her high school class, “The 49ers”, playing cards, watching old movies, and reading.

Carola married John W., Gaither, Jr., in WaKeeney at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church on April 18, 1950. She is survived by daughters, Cassandra and husband, Tom Hutchinson, and Christine and husband, Carl Garten, all of Salina, grandson Bourke Hutchinson, wife Kari, and great-granddaughters Riley and Harper of Gardner, Kansas, and grandson Caleb Garten, of Omaha, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by husband, John Warren Gaither, sister, Calista Sutton and husband Max of St. Joseph, Missouri, brother, Laurence Karst and wife Janice of Cleveland, Tennessee, brother-in-law, Robert Max Gaither, Topeka, nephew Max Sutton, Jr., St. Joseph, Missouri, her in-laws John Warren and Mabel Gaither, WaKeeney, and her parents William and Lydia Karst, WaKeeney.

Surviving family includes: sister-in-law Marie Gaither of Topeka, sister-in-law Janice Gaither Crissman, and husband Tom of Great Bend, nieces and nephews Max Gaither, Jr., Topeka, Charlotte Gaither Adair of Topeka, Peggy Gaither Adams of Honolulu, Hawaii, Doug Crissman, Great Bend, Donna Crissman Petz, Great Bend, Cheryl Crissman Jones of Pinetop, Arizona, Susan Karst McMurray, Moorseville, North Carolina, David Karst, Salt Lake City, Utah, Laura Karst Morgan, Cleveland, Tennessee, Melissa Sutton Zawadny, St. Joseph, Missouri, John Sutton, Denver, Colorado, and Patti Sutton Markworth, Lake St. Louis, Missouri.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 338 North 7th Street, WaKeeney, at 11:00 AM. Family visitation will be from 9:45-10:45 prior to the service at the church. A light luncheon at the church will follow after graveside committal services at the WaKeeney Cemetery.

Sherman E. Wolfe Jr.

Glade resident Sherman E. Wolfe Jr., passed away Friday, March 20, 2015, at the Smith County Long Term Care in Smith Center, KS at the age of 69.

He was born April 15, 1945 in Birmingham, AL, the son of Sherman E. & Norma L. (Holmes) Wolfe.  Sherman worked as an engineer for the railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of the home in Glade; daughter, Shelly Sanders of Wichita, KS; stepdaughters, Jenifer Gilley of Parsons, KS, Dane Griffith of Phillipsburg, Becky Allen of Salina, KS and Susan Shinkle of El Dorado, KS; 13 grandchildren; and two brothers, Allen Wolfe of North Carolina and Joey Wolfe of Utah.

Cremation was chosen.  His family is planning a memorial service for Saturday, March 28, at 1:00 p.m. in the First Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Leslie Allen Kail

Leslie Allen Kail, age 55, passed away at his home in Greeley County, Kansas on Thursday, March 19, 2015. Allen was born July 8, 1959 in Stafford, Kansas, the son of John Leslie & Marjorie Adel Allen Kail. He was a 1977 graduate of Greeley County High School, attended Kansas State University where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. He was a farmer and a lifetime resident of Greeley County, Kansas.

Allen attended the Assembly of God Church in Tribune, Kansas and was a board member of the Farm Service Agency in Greeley County, Kansas. As per Allen’s instruction, he became a tissue donor following his passing.

On August 1, 1981 he married Susan Myers in Tribune, Kansas.

Final disposition will be held privately at a later date at Allen’s favorite spot in Colorado, as was his request.

Margaret M. ‘Margie’ Bollig

Margaret M. “Margie” Bollig, 87, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born June 15, 1927 on the family farm South of Quinter, Kansas the daughter of William “Bill” and Bertha (Linenberger) Fahey. On June 24, 1947 she married Norbert Joseph Bollig in Ellis, Kansas. He died February 7, 2015.

She was a graduate of Quinter High School and graduated from Business College in Denver, CO. She worked at Travenol until their closing and was the State secretary-treasurer for the VFW Auxiliary.

She did bookwork for Hays Meal Site and Meals on Wheels for many years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays and the Hays VFW Auxiliary. She was very active in the American Legion and VFW. She was an avid bingo player, loved reading, crocheting, golf, dancing and square dancing, polkas, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Robert “Bob” Bollig and wife JoAnn of Fairfax, Virginia, Mick Bollig and wife Suzanne of Hays, and Keith Bollig and wife Jennifer of Chicago, IL, three daughters, Sharon Pfeifer and husband Ken of Phoenix, AZ, Glenda Pfaff and husband Randy of Russell, and Rhonda Baker and husband Lyle of Hays, three brothers, Herbert Fahey and wife Barbara of Arvada, CO, Eugene Fahey of Henderson, CO, and Ron Fahey and wife Amy Finch of Green Valley, AZ, an uncle Eli Boucher of Kansas City, a daughter in law Josie Gallegos of Ft. Collins, CO, fifteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Dennis Bollig, five brothers, Dave, Leo, Leonard, Pat, and Jerry Fahey, a sister Patty Gerstner, and a granddaughter Erica Rae Bollig.

Ellen Elizabeth Dreiling

Ellen Elizabeth Dreiling, 92, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center.

She was born February 23, 1923 in Victoria, Kansas the daughter of Joseph J. and Marianna (Dreiling) Linenberger. She married Vincent Dreiling in 1946 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria and they celebrated nearly 70 years of marriage.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, reading and traveling. She lovingly sewed a handmade quilt for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren when they were born.

Survivors include her husband Vincent, Hays, eight children Firma Carrithers and husband Jim of Windom, KS, Diane Long and husband Mike of McKinney, TX, James Dreiling and wife Paula of Quakertown, PA, Marlene Taxter and husband Mike of Plano, TX, Dean Dreiling, Joe Dreiling, and Geralyn Dreiling, all of Hays and Anthony Dreiling and wife Cindy of Tecumseh, Kansas, one sister Leona Turner of Augusta, Kansas, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Ludwig, Otto, and Paul, seven sisters Regina, Bertha, Philomena, Hilda, Lucia, Margaret, and Ida, and a granddaughter Jami.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday and from 1:00 pm until service time on Tuesday, all at the funeral home.
