Delores Mermis Hoffman

Delores Mermis Hoffman, 84, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas.

She was born October 7, 1930 in Hays the daughter of Frank C. and Bernadine (Leiker) Mermis. On December 16, 1950 she married Ralph J. Hoffman in Leesville, Louisiana. He died February 13, 2000. She was a homemaker and religion teacher for many years. She enjoyed camping, RV travelling, and she loved her brothers and sisters and family deeply.

Survivors include a son Mark Hoffman of Milpitas, CA, two brothers Frank Mermis II and wife Shirley of Olathe, and William “Bill” Mermis and wife Betty Jean of Overland Park, a sister Alice Munsch Herrman and husband Mike of Schoenchen, three grandchildren Apryl Winston, Kristen Hoffman, and Steven Hoffman, two great grandchildren Brianna and Ariana, brothers in law James Hoffman and wife Vera, Melvin Schmidt, and Alex Leiker, and sisters in law Lillian Hoffman Pfeifer, Rosie Mermis and Mary Ann Mermis, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son David Hoffman, a daughter Barbara Jean Winston, three brothers Cecil F. Mermis and wife Dorothy, Vernon J. Mermis, and Gerald L. Mermis, three sisters Lillian Arnhold and husband Daniel, Mary Ellen Schmidt, and Betty L. Leiker, and a brother in law Al Pfeifer.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will be at a later date next to her husband in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Fremont, California. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ellen Elizabeth Dreiling

Ellen Elizabeth Dreiling, 92, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center.

She was born February 23, 1923 in Victoria, Kansas the daughter of Joseph J. and Margaretha (Schamne) Linenberger. She married Vincent Dreiling in 1946 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria and they celebrated nearly 70 years of marriage. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cooking, reading and traveling. She lovingly sewed a handmade quilt for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren when they were born.Ellen E. Dreiling

Survivors include her husband Vincent, Hays, eight children Firma Carrithers and husband Jim of Windom, KS, Diane Long and husband Mike of McKinney, TX, James Dreiling and wife Paula of Quakertown, PA, Marlene Taxter and husband Mike of Plano, TX, Dean Dreiling, Joe Dreiling, and Geralyn Dreiling, all of Hays and Anthony Dreiling and wife Cindy of Tecumseh, Kansas, one sister Leona Turner of Augusta, Kansas, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Ludwig, Otto, and Paul, seven sisters Regina, Bertha, Philomena, Hilda, Lucia, Margaret, and Ida, and a granddaughter Jami.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday and from 1:00 pm until service time on Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Margaret M. “Margie” Bollig

Margaret M. “Margie” Bollig, 87, Hays, died Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born June 15, 1927 on the family farm South of Quinter, Kansas the daughter of William “Bill” and Bertha (Linenberger) Fahey. On June 24, 1947 she married Norbert Joseph Bollig in Ellis, Kansas. He died February 7, 2015. She was a graduate of Quinter High School and graduated from Business College in Denver, CO. She worked at Travenol until their closing and was the State secretary-treasurer for the VFW Auxiliary. She did bookwork for Hays Meal Site and Meals on Wheels for many years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays and the Hays VFW Auxiliary. She was very active in the American Legion and VFW. She was an avid bingo player, loved reading, crocheting, golf, dancing and square dancing, polkas, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Robert “Bob” Bollig and wife JoAnn of Fairfax, Virginia, Mick Bollig and wife Suzanne of Hays, and Keith Bollig and wife Jennifer of Chicago, IL, three daughters, Sharon Pfeifer and husband Ken of Phoenix, AZ, Glenda Pfaff and husband Randy of Russell, and Rhonda Baker and husband Lyle of Hays, three brothers, Herbert Fahey and wife Barbara of Arvada, CO, Eugene Fahey of Henderson, CO, and Ron Fahey and wife Amy Finch of Green Valley, AZ, an uncle Eli Boucher of Kansas City, a daughter in law Josie Gallegos of Ft. Collins, CO, fifteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Dennis Bollig, five brothers, Dave, Leo, Leonard, Pat, and Jerry Fahey, a sister Patty Gerstner, and a granddaughter Erica Rae Bollig.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, WaKeeney, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 Wednesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A VFW Auxiliary rosary will be at 6:00 followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30, both on Tuesday at the funeral home. Chyrisse (Misner) Leiker

Chyrisse (Misner) Leiker, age 33, of Hays, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015 in Hays. She was born May 22, 1981 in Lakewood, Colorado to Steve and Jacqueline (Gibbs) Misner. She grew up and attended school in Ness City graduating in 1999. She has lived in Hays for the last several years.

She was a loving and devoted stay at home mother for her children.

Chyrisse is survived by her husband, Kyle Leiker of Hays; two daughters, Kaiden and Kennedy Goodman and a son, Karson Leiker all of Hays; her father and step mother, Steve and Marilyn Misner of Edmond, Oklahoma; step father, Steve Foos of Ness City; her sister, Mandy Lawson and husband Shawn of Hays; four nieces, Whitley, Brooke, Chloe, and Jenna Lee Leiker all of Russell; three nephews, Jackson and Greyson Lawson both of Hays and Broderic Leiker of Russell; and her father and mother-in-law, Virgil and Lisa Leiker of Hays.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

Visitation will be Monday 4 PM – 8 PM and Tuesday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601.

A parish vigil and rosary service will be 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral chapel.

Marvin L. Boxberger

Marvin L. Boxberger, 82, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, with Pastor Earl Haggard officiating. Burial will take place at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Friday, March 20, 2015, at the mortuary. Donald Lee Horyna

Donald Lee Horyna, 79, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the Locus Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas.

Donald was born on September 06, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, at the family home, the son of Edward C. and Marie R. (Krmela) Horyna. He grew up in the Great Bend, Kansas area and attended Great Bend Public Schools. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Earlene Crisco on December 30, 1988, in Great Bend, Kansas. He worked as a welder most of his adult life, working with Flame Engineering in LaCrosse for about 20 years. He was a longtime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell. He enjoyed fishing, puzzles, traveling, playing dominoes and loved reading all the time. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

Surviving family include his daughter Mary Zahn of Ellinwood, KS; stepsons Frank Philbern of Great Bend, KS, and David Philbern of Norton, KS; stepdaughters Connie Meitner of Olmitz, KS, Karen McNemee of McLouth, KS, Rita Tague of Edwardsville, KS, Norma Herdman of Inman, KS; brothers Kenneth Horyna of Holyrood, KS and Edwin Horyna of Hutchinson, KS; sisters Evelene Knox of Great Bend, KS, Rose Cosper of Irving, Texas, Carol Huffman of Great Bend, KS, Betty Hafenstine of LaCrosse, KS, Connie Allen of McPherson, KS and Lois Cox of South Hutchinson, KS; 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Earlene Horyna on April 02, 2009; parents, son Jeffrey Horyna, brother Clarence Horyna and sister Sylvia Grace Horyna.

Rachelle ‘Chelly’ Schmidt

Rachelle “Chelly” Schmidt, 49, Omaha, died Sunday, March 15, 2015 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

She was born January 20, 1966 in Hays the daughter of Adolph and DeAnn (Leiker) Schmidt.  She was a graduate of Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in 1984 and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in Marketing in 1987.  She was Divisional Merchandise Manager for Hayneedle in Omaha, NE.  Previously she was General Merchandise Manager at The Golf Warehouse, Wichita, KS.  She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Omaha.

Survivors include her parents, Hays, her partner Tom Tongue of Omaha and his daughter Megan Tongue of Columbia, MO, one brother Andrew Schmidt and wife Marie of Olathe, one sister Joylene Kindel and husband John of Shawnee, KS, two nephews Daniel Kindel and Samuel Schmidt, and three nieces Zoe Schmidt, Sophie Schmidt, and Meghan Kindel.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Katie, and her grandparents Henry and Regina Leiker and Adolph and Anna Schmidt.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 500 E. 19th Street.

Cremation will take place after the services and inurnment will be at 1:00 pm on Friday in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday and from 9:30 am until 10:45 on Thursday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine.

A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30, both on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Catholic Charities, the St. Thomas More Society, or to Image Recovery Foundation (Alegent Health) of Omaha, NE, in care of the funeral home.

Roland Lee Turner

Roland Lee Turner, age 86, of Quinter, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2015 at his home. He was born May 10, 1928 in rural Quinter to Lee Marlin and Della Kathryn (Long) Turner.

Roland was a 1947 graduate of Quinter High School. He went on to serve our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On November 9, 1963, he was united in marriage to Irene O. Deines in WaKeeney at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. They enjoyed 43 years of marriage together until Irene’s death on June 25, 2007.

Roland was a proud farmer and rancher. He was a devoted husband and father. In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and having coffee with his friends.

Survivors include two brothers, Max and wife Gladys of Burlington, and Wesley and wife Loretta of Quinter; and one sister, Louise Hisey of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Randall Troy Turner; a sister, Twila Yowell; and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Church of the Brethren in Quinter. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Quinter.

Beverly Arlene Davis

Beverly Arlene Davis, age 80, a resident of Hiattville, Kansas, passed away Saturday morning, March 14, 2015, at the Medicalodge of Fort Scott surrounded by family.

She was born January 9, 1935, at Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Kenneth Thomas and Edna Farmer Thomas. She married Conrad L. Davis on June 1, 1952, at the Pawnee Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1999. Beverly graduated from Fort Scott High School and lived her entire life in the Fort Scott and Hiattville areas. She was a farm wife and homemaker who maintained the farm records. In her earlier years, she worked in the billing department of Key Industries for one year, JC Penney’s for thirteen years and part-time for the Hepler Bank for four years. She was the matriarch of the Davis/Foster Dairy Farm and hosted annually a huge family reunion during the Fourth of July. She thoroughly enjoyed planting flowers and was a Master Gardener. She enjoyed traveling with the Fun Seekers and shopping. Attending meetings and being active in the Eastern Star was her passion. She belonged for over sixty years and was a member of the Olive Chapter #13 OES of Ft. Scott. Her highlight was getting to serve the Grand Chapter of Kansas OES as Grand Ruth during the 2006-2007 session with the theme of “The Spirit of Christmas.” She was a longtime member of the Hiattville United Methodist Church and was the current financial secretary. She also belonged to the United Methodist Women and was a Walnut Township Officer.

Beverly is survived by one brother, Keith Thomas and wife, Georgia, of Lawrence, Kansas; a daughter, Lynda Foster and husband, Gary, of Ft. Scott, and three sons, Denny Davis and Norma Davis, of Ft. Scott, Kevin Davis and wife, Brenda and Mark Davis and wife, Stacy, all of Scott City, Kansas. Grandsons, David Foster and wife, Addi, of Ft. Scott, Adam Foster, of Weston, Missouri, Jason Davis and fiancée, Kelly Donnelly, Overland Park, Kansas, Kelly Davis and wife, Niki, of Ft. Scott, Austin Davis, of Manhattan, Kansas and Chris Davis and wife, Gayle of Lawrence, Kansas; granddaughters, Aubrey Davis, of Manhattan, Jenee’ Davis, of Eldorado, Kansas, and Macy and Trella Davis, of Scott City, Kansas; a step-grandson, Jason Bentley and wife, Kelsey of Farmington, Arkansas and step-granddaughter, Randi Schnur and husband, Jake, of Wichita, Kansas; thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two very close friends, Clara Brewer and Judy Tripp, of Ft. Scott. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Rev. Don Flanner and Rev. Joni Raymond will conduct funeral services at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 19th at the Hiattville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel with Eastern Star Services conducted at 7:30 P.M.
