Virginia M. Kinderknecht, age 75, of Hays passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Hutchuinson Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 4, 1939 in Liebenthal, Kansas to Anton and Genevieve (Schaeffer) Legleiter. She married Don Kinderknecht on May 2, 1959. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1992.

She was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. She enjoyed being a grandmother to her grandchildren and she was an animal lover.

She is survived by two sons, Carl Kinderknecht of Hays and John Kinderknecht of Hutchinson; four daughters, Sue Erbacher and husband Pody of Hays, Kimberly Farber and husband Alan of Commerce City, CO, Therese Hoag of WaKeeney and Dana Schmidt and husband John of Hays; four brothers, Wally, Miles and Harry Legleiter all of Hays and Dennis Legleiter of Gorham; three sisters, Dorothy McCollum, Germaine Degenhardt, Patty Rohr and husband Gary all of Hays; thirteen grandchildren, Megan, Mark, Tyler, Michael, Miles, Sierra, Kailyn, D.J., Joshua, Jennifer, Rachel, Erika and Christopher as well as 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Marty Kinderknecht; a daughter, Debra Kinderknecht and six brothers, Gerald, Wilfred, Donald, Anthony, Melvin and LeeRoy Legleiter.

Private family services were held Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Private Burial took place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

Jay Roger Muench

Jay Roger Muench, age 39, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on August 28, 1975 in Scott City, Kansas, the son of John Dennis “J.D.” and Judy Miller Muench. Jay was a resident of Scott City, Kansas until 1997 moving to Garden City, Kansas.

Funeral Services will be at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas 10:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 with the Rev. Dennis Carter officiating.

Interment will be held at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Jamie Lee Castle

Jamie Lee Castle passed away February 21, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Quinter. He was born January 23, 1947 to Marvin and Mernadine (Nemeyer) Castle in Quinter. Jamie attended Quinter Grade School and High School, graduating with QHS class of 1965. He was baptized in the Church of the Brethren in Quinter as a young man.

Jamie served in the United States Army and was wounded in Vietnam in October of 1966. He spent months recovering in Yokohama, Japan, Washington DC and Fort Riley hospitals. He was awarded a Purple Heart of Honor on November 17, 1966. Jamie went to Alabama and trained and was certified to operate the TOW Missile and finished his service time in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Jamie married Connie (Marcus) Stieben in Houston, Texas, and enjoyed helping her raise her three children. While in Houston, Jamie took classes at the University of Houston, earning a degree in Business Technology in 1981, and spent his free time learning computer skills. He was a manager for a courier service in Houston. When he retired from the courier service, he took classes and became a realtor.

Jamie met Judy (Mehold) VanHorn in Houston and they married in November of 1994, in McCammon, Idaho. They made their home in Houston. They enjoyed traveling the southern states and east coast. She preceded him in death August of 2009.

Jamie wanted to be closer to his family, so he and his dog and favorite companion, Barney, moved to Overland Park in 2011. Facing declining health issues, he moved back to Quinter in early 2014 to be with his mother and dear friend and caregiver, Lela Cooksey.

Jamie was preceded in death by his father. Surviving Jamie are his mother; two brothers, Fred and wife Debbie of McCammon, Idaho, and Alan of Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Connie and husband Greg Bird of Grainfield. He is also survived a daughter, Leitha Brents; and a granddaughter, LaNae Rich. His surviving step-children are Renee Stieben Bingham and Jennifer Pavlicek. He had fond memories of spending time with is step-grandson, Clayton Pavlicek. Surviving nephew is Shannon Hopkins and wife Tiffany, and nieces are Michelle Bishop, Jennifer Jones, and Michelle Jones.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Quinter Church of the Brethren with Pastor Keith Funk officiating. Inurnment will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Cremation was chosen, so there will be no visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Gove County Ambulance Service or Quinter Church of the Brethren. Checks made to the organization may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main, Quinter, KS 67752.

Frances Marie Thurston

Frances Marie Thurston, age 98, passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Wichita County Health Center LTCU in Leoti, Kansas. Frances was born January 7, 1917 at Tribune, Kansas, the daughter of Harold & Marjorie Hoopes Smith. A lifetime resident of Western Kansas, she was a homemaker and a retired Avon representative for over thirty- two years.

Frances was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the VFW Auxiliary, all of Leoti, Kansas

On January 4, 1940 she married Harry Thurston at Tribune, Kansas. Harry passed away on October 1, 1989 at Tribune, Kansas.

Frances’s surviving family includes-

Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas.

Kent Leroy Johnston

Kent Leroy Johnston passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas at the age of 67. He was born March 19, 1947 in Stockton, Kansas to Donald and Opal (Conn) Johnston.

Kent graduated from Stockton High School with the Class of 1965. He graduated from technical school in Wichita, Kansas with an emphasis on upholstery. He joined the United States Navy and served his country during Vietnam. On December 30, 1978 he was united in marriage to Marta Jo Odle at the Assembly of God Church in Stockton. They were blessed with two sons, Corey and Tyler.

Kent owned and operated his business Johnston’s Upholstery in Stockton. He was very skilled in his craft producing many lovely pieces of furniture and restored autos over the years. He coached the kid’s T-ball teams as well as other sports, spent many years warming the bleachers at both boys’ wrestling meets and attending Erika’s dance recitals.

Kent was a faithful member of the Assembly of God Church. He was a member of the Monroe-Taylor-Barnes VFW Post #8873. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and pool. He played on a local snooker and bowling team.

Kent is survived by his wife Marta Jo; sons, Corey Johnston of Clay Center and Tyler Johnston of Manhattan; granddaughter, Ericka Johnston; brothers, Merrill Johnston and wife Nita and Donnie Johnston and wife Patty all of Stockton; sister, Barbara Juhl of Aurora, Colorado; and mother-in-law, Aloha Odle of Stockton.

He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Opal Johnston, sister Elaine Fox and father-in-law, Lee Odle.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Stockton. Burial will follow in Stockton Cemetery with honors by United States Navy and VFW Post #8873. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gilbert J. Leiker

Gilbert J. Leiker, age 84, of Hays, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Via Christi Village, Hays.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Munjor.
Visitation will be Sunday 4 PM – 8 PM and Monday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601.

The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Assembly will provide an honor guard Sunday 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM. A combined 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7 PM all Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Martha Smith

Martha Smith, age 76, of Hays passed away January 31, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays.

She was born July 16, 1938 in Clayton, New Mexico to Frank and Martha Ann (Hain) Konda. She married Earl North in June of 1956. He preceded her in death in September of 1982.
Martha was a seamstress and did auto upholstery work.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Stadalman and husband Zachary of Hays and two sisters, Alvera Chvilick of Marienthal, KS and Roberta Konda of Wichita, KS.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private family inurnment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery near the Windhorst Township, rural Spearville, KS.

Douglas Forrest Rozean

Douglas Forrest Rozean, 61, Hays, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2015 at Hays Medical Center.

He was born March 4, 1953 in Hays, Kansas to Wade and Laura Lee (Griffith) Rozean. He went to Kansas City, Mo. to attend a trade school for computer operations. Shortly after he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Sue Dreher on April 15, 1972 in Plainville, Kansas. They moved to Aurora, Colorado where he started at the bottom of the computer programming trade.

On March 3, 1975 his daughter, Amanda “Mandy” Marie Rozean was born. On July 23, 1977 his son, Travis Douglas Rozean was born. Shortly after the children were born they moved back to Hays to be closer to family and friends. He held several jobs starting as a computer programmer at Hadley Hospital, worked at System Solutions, Inc., Infinitec and Manatron. He was an Owner and CEO and Sales manager. He retired as a successful businessman at the early age of 56. During his retirement he became an investor and grandpa extraordinaire.
His daughter Mandy married Kory Alyn Meyers on June 7, 1997 and blessed him with 3 grandchildren. His son Travis married Jill Marie Werth on June 5, 1999 and blessed him with four grandchildren.

Family and friends always came first in his life. He loved nothing more than spending time with his wife, children, and seven grandchildren. Kohlton Alyn (15), Cameron Michael (14), Kaylor Marie (13), Landon Alexander (10), Madelyn Grace (9), Kallyn Nicole (8), and Mason Travis (4). His grandchildren were literally the light of his life. He attended every soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, golf, baseball, and dance event that he could. His grandkids were always #1 in his eyes. He loved taking his grandbabies to his cabin in South Dakota, Disney World and his latest home away from home, their cabin at Wilson Lake.
He enjoyed listening to country music, attending Denver Broncos games and going to watch his favorite NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. He loved collecting coins, knowing that one day he would pass them down to his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren all of Hays; three sisters, Deanna Miller and husband Frank of Catherine, KS, Jo Rozean of Denver, CO and Bonnie Rozean of Vidor, TX; two brothers, Robert Rozean and wife Antoinette of Lindale, TX, Paul Rozean and wife Joan of Hays, and a sister-in-law, Lisa Rozean of Hays.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wade Jr. and Charles.
Doug always enjoyed talking to and meeting new people. He never met a stranger! If you were in his path you were bound to know him. His infectious smile, witty attitude, and sense of humor will be missed by all. We know he would want this to end with his famous last words……… “Happy Day”

Funeral services will be 10 AM Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday 4 PM – 8 PM and Thursday 9 AM – 9:30 AM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

A St. Mary’s Council Knights of Columbus rosary will be 6:30 Wednesday followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all at the funeral chapel.

Ray C. Markley

Ray C. Markley, 73, of Russell, Kansas, died on Sunday, February 08, 2015, at his home in Russell.

Ray was born July 08, 1941, in Phoenix, Arizona, the son of Darrell and Lela (Webb) Markley. He was a caretaker and senoir companion for the elderly, helping them with daily activities and going to appointments.

He is survived by his children son Ray C. Markley and daughters Marla and Melody Markley.

Viola Marie (Quint) Kuhn

Viola Marie (Quint) Kuhn of Russell, Kansas passed away Monday, February 16, 2015 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas.

Viola was the daughter of John and Catherine (Windholtz) Quint. She grew up in Victoria and graduated from Victoria High School.

Viola was united in marriage to Elmer J. Kuhn DDS on June 18, 1947 in Victoria. This union was blessed with three children; Peggy, Mary and John. They made their home in Russell, Kansas. Elmer preceded her in death on October 27, 1990.

Viola was a devoted wife and homemaker. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Ladies Guild, Daughters of Isabella of Victoria, and Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She was also active in the Russell Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and Russell Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, enjoyed playing Bridge with many local Bridge Clubs, cooking, traveling, and delighted in the “Arts”. But most of all she took greatest pleasure in friends and family. She will be remembered for her love of sports from baseball as a young woman to golf in her later years. She will be remembered and admired for her boundless energy and zest for life.

Surviving family include her two daughters, Peggy London (Wayne) of Shawnee, Kansas and Mary Tuerk (Tim) of Murrieta, California; son, Dr. John Kuhn (Maricel) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Norma Fellers of Hays, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Chris London (Katy), Jason Tuerk, Matt London, Ashley Kuhn-Spieker (Bo), Kristen Tuerk, John Richard Kuhn and Nicholas Kuhn; and great grandchild, Ellie London. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and four sisters.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Fidelis Catholic Cemetery in Victoria, Kansas. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 5 PM , Friday, February 20, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7 PM Friday, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Memorials have been established with Russell Senior Center and Russell Rotary.
