John Kevin ‘Bo’ Landauer

John Kevin “Bo” Landauer, age 53 of Ellis, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, 2015 at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, February 7, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday 5 PM – 8 PM with a parish vigil at 7 PM all at St. Mary’s Church.

Loretta V. Smith

Loretta V. Smith passed away peacefully Christmas night, 2014 in Yakima, WA.

She was born December 12, 1921 in Marshall, Lyon County, Minnesota to John and Ella Radonski. She worked in a bakery, at the Jansen swimsuit company in Portland, OR as a seamstress and as a waitress in various restaurants. Loretta worked hard all her life to raise her three children. She also took care of her elderly mother, her younger brother and her younger sister as they each became ill.

After retiring she took square dance lessons (her grandson Mathew was her partner.) Later she started line dancing and eventually volunteered to teach it at the Senior Center in Hoquiam, WA. Loretta had several hobbies. She crocheted and made many doilies, which she shared with her family. She was an expert seamstress and made most of her own clothes. She also knitted several sweaters for herself. Quilting was a favorite hobby and she made many quilts for family members. Her family was very important to her.

Loretta was preceded in death by an infant son; her parents; three siblings and a grandson.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Delbert (Mae) Smith, Oakley, KS, Alona (Chuck) Kilwien, Yakima, WA and Darrel (Merna) Smith, Yakima, WA; ten grandchildren and twenty on great grandchildren.

Roena Marie Gordon

Roena Marie Gordon, 88, of Colby, died January 30, 2015 at Prairie Senior Living Complex, Colby.

She was born January 19, 1927 in Rawlins County, KS to Leffler and Blanche (Tucker) Ramey. She attended college for 2 years in Watertown, Wisconsin. On September 2, 1948 she married Robert Gordon at the Presbyterian Church in Colby, KS. To this union three children were born. Roena had a love for horses and trained horses for American Royal. She also worked in abstracting for 15 years. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Colby.

Roena was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Oddessa Kruckenberg, Wanda Lanphier, Ruby Eisfeldt, Helen Williams and infant brother, Jack Ramey.

She is survived by her children, Amelia (Dan) Grinstead, Walla Walla, WA, Deborah (Robert) Bender, Tonganoxie, KS and Greg Gordon, Colby, KS; brother, Leffler Ramey, Corpus Christi, TX; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Sybilla Schmidt

Hays, Kansas – Sybilla Schmidt, age 95, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

She was born February 10, 1919, in Catharine, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary (Windholz) Schmeidler Jr.  She married Alexius F. Schmidt on September 1, 1936, in Catharine, Kansas.  He died December 7, 1999.

She was a homemaker, she enjoyed reading, yard work and moved to Hays, in 1975, from rural  Catharine.  She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter, Cora Lee Pfannenstiel and husband, Melvin, Hays, KS; two grandchildren, Mark Pfannenstiel, Kansas City, MO; Cindy Pfannenstiel, West Midlands, England; one sister-in-law, Lorinda Schmeidler, Hays, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Matthew James Pfannenstiel; one brother, Eugene Schmeidler and one sister, Albertine Rome and husband, Fidelis.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Thursday, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 18 & Vine, Hays, Kansas.  Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays, Kansas.

A vigil service and rosary is at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Thursday, all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Karen Backowski, age 61, of Hays, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015 at North Care Hospice in Kansas City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Phyllis Ann Long

Phyllis Ann Long, age 71, passed away on January 28, 2015 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on May 29, 1943 in Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Gene and Madelene Gish Holloway. A resident of the Scott City community since moving from Hays, Kansas in 1967, she was a secretary for Blick’s Inc. for 25 years and then retired from working at Suzy B’s Flowers and Gifts in January of 2015.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On November 27, 1968 she married Greg Long in Scott City, Kansas. He survives.

Other Survivors include: Two Sons, Robert and Karen Long of Pratt, Kansas; Thomas and Melissa Long of Wichita, Kansas; One Brother, Kirk and Desiree Holloway of Wichita, Kansas, Two Sisters, Kyle and Chris Carroll of Scott City, Kansas, Tracey and Terry Richmeier of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sister-in-Laws Linda Robertson of Montezuma, Kansas, Marsha Holloway of Scott City, Kansas, Four Grandchildren, Two Great-GrandChildren, and Numerous Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers Ronald Holloway, and Kim Holloway.

Angela Sue Simpson, age 40, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas surrounded by her family. She was born on July 22, 1974 in Syracuse, Kansas, the daughter of Roger and Kay Lindner Potter.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas.

On November 23, 1996, she married Curtis Simpson in Syracuse, Kansas. He survives.

Other Survivors include: One Daughter; Dakota Sue Simpson of Scott City, Kansas; Parents, Roger and Kay Potter of Scott City, Kansas, Two Sisters Tracy and Gerald Wendt of Tribune, Kansas, Misty and Shawn Peirano of Junction City, Kansas; Nine Nieces and Nephews, Kara, Kyra, Kegan, Brittany, and Destiny of Tribune, Kansas, Addison, Zachary, Erica, and Ashley of Junction City, Kansas; Twelve Great-Nieces and Nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Marco H. Zamboni

Hays, Kansas – Marco H. Zamboni, age 88, died Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Via Christi  Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born June 12, 1926, at Rock Springs, Wyoming to Marco and Edith (Zambi) Zamboni.

He married Pauline (Stokes) in 1954 at Wichita, Kansas.  She died January 24, 2002.

He was an electrical engineer and worked for Boeing for 30 years.  He was a WWII Navy veteran  and spent most of his adult life in Wichita.  He moved to Hays, in 2013.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus and the Rolling Hills Country Club all of Wichita.
Survivors include one son, Wallace and wife, Tammy, Stockton, KS; two daughters, Jennifer Boyle, Jacksonville, FL; Michelle Zamboni, Newark DE; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and one sister.

Private services and inurnment will be at a later date. Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 is in charge of arrangements.

Philena Melba (Scheuerman) Baus

Philena Melba (Scheuerman) Baus, age 92, of Hays formerly of McCracken passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 in Hays. She was born June 16, 1922 on the family farm north of Bison, Kansas to Philip C. and Sarah (Schlegel) Scheuerman. She attended Happy Hollow country school rural Bison. She graduated from Bison High School as the class Valedictorian. She received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays teachers College and later earned her Master’s degree. She married Elmer L. Baus in 1943 in Bison, KS. He preceded her in death in 1974.

Philena retired from McCracken Elementary School in 1986 after a 36 year teaching career that started in a one room school house near Hargrove, KS. During her retirement she stayed active doing volunteer work for Methodist Youthville, CASA, her church and preparing income taxes as part of the AARP program for many years in McCracken, LaCrosse and Hays. She also became a foster parent for three Vietnamese refugees from the Korean War. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting.
She was a loving mother and grandmother and all who knew her felt touched in a special way. She will also be remembered as a caring and devoted teacher by the many students she taught.

She is survived by a son, Elmer Baus Jr. and wife Betty of Pratt, KS; a daughter, Gloria Blackwell of Hays; three foster sons, Hung Pham and wife Tran of Hays, Kim Cao of Arlington, TX and Qui Quach and wife Yen of Salina, KS; eleven grandchildren, Reed Blackwell and wife Dayle, Brooke Deines and husband Curtis, Spring Bentham and husband Zach, Shawn Baus and wife Lisa, Leigh Baus and Kaley, Dawn Irvin and husband Shane, Christopher Pham, Kevin Pham, Dat Quach, Ivy Cao and Vivian Cao as well as 15 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Melvin, Clifford and Orland Scheuerman.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday, January 30, 2015 at Messiah Lutheran Church 2000 Main Street, Hays. Burial will follow in the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, KS.

Visitation will be Thursday 6 PM – 8 PM at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

Anna V. Hamburg

Anna V. Hamburg passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society, Ellis.  She was born May 2, 1920 in rural Ellis to John and Mary (Armbrister) Zachman.  On August 4, 1946, she was united in marriage to Marvin Hamburg at St. John Lutheran Church, north of Ellis.  They enjoyed 64 years of marriage together, until he passed away on January 31, 2011.  She was a proud homemaker, farmer rancher, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Anna was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in WaKeeney.

Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Hamburg of Reston, Virginia; a son Dale Hamburg and wife Olivia of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren, Scott Sternson, Michael Murray, John Murray, Nicole Robeson, and GiGi Garcia; seven great-grandchildren, Kyle Booth, Ryan Booth, McKenna Booth, Brock Robeson, Cole Robeson, Sami Sternson, and Olympia Sternson; two brothers, Ernest Zachman of Ellis, Harry Zachman of Wichita; and three sisters, Martha Massier of Ellis, Dorothy Dietz of Hays, and Helen Deines of WaKeeney.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Freida Allphin; three brothers, Oscar, Raymond, and infant Wayne Zachman.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.  Visitation will be Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Hays, Kansas – Melvin J. “Mel” Schreiber, age 83, died Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Hays Medical Center Hays, KS.

He was born December 19, 1931, in Great Bend, KS, to Fred and Margaret (Mauler) Schreiber. He married Frances L. “Frankie” (Musick) on September 27, 1952 in Hutchinson, KS. She died April 3, 2012.

He was director of fleet maintenance for Becker Corporation in El Dorado, KS, for 21 years. He also worked 11 years at Thompson Transport in McPherson, KS. He was a US Navy veteran, served on the USS Hancock. He moved to Hays in 2008 from Andover, KS. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include one son, Dale Schreiber and wife, Beth, Gray, TN; two daughters, Pam Joy and husband, Fred, Hays, KS; Terrie Vandine, Wichita, KS; one brother, Kenneth Schreiber and wife, Joan, Olmitz, KS; one sister, Betty Pancost and husband, Allen, Sterling, CO; one sister-in-law, Beatrice Schreiber, Denver, CO; eight grandchildren, Michelle (Josh) Callahan, Jeff Schreiber, Chrisy (Tony) Crough, Scott (Briar) Schreiber, Jessica Vandine, Brett Schreiber, Katie Joy, and Courtney Vandine; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Father Paul Schreiber J.C.B. and Eugene Schreiber.

Services are at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 31, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, KS. Inurnment will be at the Burrton Cemetery, Burton, KS, at 4:00 PM, Saturday.

A vigil service is at 6:30 PM, Friday, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 PM, Friday, both at Clines Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, KS 67601.

Harold G. Boor, 83 of Hays, KS, died on Sunday, January 25, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born on July 7, 1931 to Hilary and Theresa (Mannebach) Boor in Norton, Ks.

He married Leona (Rall) Boor on October 8, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic  Church, Grinnell, Ks.  He was a farmer and stockman and worked for the Fort Hays Experiment Station for 38 years, where he was the shop foreman.  He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Hays, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6984.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine St.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 1:00 pm until 1:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm, a parish vigil service will be at 6:30, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, all on Thursday at the funeral home.
