Karen ‘Kay’ (Burns) Heier Nagao

Karen “Kay” (Burns) Heier Nagao passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Gove County Medical Center, Long Term Care, Quinter.

She was born April 17, 1938 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Lois Ovella Simmons Hyer Ecklund. Karen was adopted by Earl Noel and Calista Alene (Stewart) Burns.

She married Leo Valentine Heier on November 22, 1958. They later divorced. On September 7, 1982, Kay was united in marriage to Tetsuo “Ted” Nagao. He preceded her in death on March 23, 2004. She is also preceded in death by her biological mother; her adopted parents; her husbands; a sister, Sara Dodson; and a daughter Lori Anne Heier. She is survived by her son, Joseph Heier and wife Kimberly of Grainfield; three grandchildren, Roert Lund and wife Naomi of Arvada, Colorado, Calista Heier and A.J. Heier of Grainfield; two great-grandchildren, Reese Lund of Grainfield and Brayden Lund of Pratt; two sisters, Patricia and husband Scott Shannon of Colorado, and Mary Lowery of Bradenton, Florida; a brother, Dennis Ecklund and wife Anita, of Florida; a brother-in-law, Sam Dodson of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Kay was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and Altar Society and the Gove County Medical Center Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kay was known for her talent in the kitchen cooking and baking. She will be missed by many.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m., January 31, 2015 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield. Memorial services will be family hosted. There will be no visitation as cremation was chosen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Gove County Medical Center, Long Term Care or Grainfield Fire Department (to help with the new Community Sign). Checks made to the organization may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 S. Main, Quinter, KS 67752.

Ronnie Ray Welch

Ronnie Ray Welch, age 61, of Plainville passed away Wednesday, January 14th, 2015, at Via Christi Nursing Home in Hays after a short battle with cancer.

He was born February 27th, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Ray and Virginia (Dupus) Welch. He graduated from Plainville High School in 1971 and earned a Business Administration degree from Salina Area Technical College.

For many years, Ron owned and operated Welch’s Greenhouse in Norton Kansas and could frequently be seen in the Plainville Flower shop helping his parents with their business before they retired. For the last few years Ron had worked for DSNWK. While he complained constantly about this job, he loved what he did and had a huge spot in his heart for the guys he worked with. Ron also enjoyed spending time with his family, annoying his neighbors, ordering satellite pay per views, sweatpants and flip-flops.

He is survived by his father, Ray Welch of Hays; a son, Heath Welch of Manhattan; a niece, Tiffany Becker and Husband Shaun of Logan.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia; a brother, Randy; and a son, Lucas.
Memorial services will be held at 1PM on Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at Via Christi Village Chapel at 2225 Canterbury Dr, Hays, KS 67601.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the Ron Welch Memorial Fund and sent to Ron’s home at 807 S. Jefferson, Plainville, KS 67663.

Hays, Kansas – Theresa A. Brungardt, age 82, former Walker, Kansas resident died Friday, January 23, 2015 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital Wichita, Kansas.

She was born October 21,1932, in Victoria, Kansas to Balthasar P. and Elizabeth (Graf) Dreiling.

She married Edwin J. Brungardt on September 10,1956 in Victoria, Kansas.

She was a homemaker and worked in her early years at Central Kansas Power Company in Hays and then worked for Myrna’s Dreiling Clothing in Victoria as a seamstress.  She was  a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Christian Mothers both of Walker, Kansas, a member of the Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella.  She and her husband moved to Via Christi Assisted Living in 2013. She was a1950 graduate of Victoria High School.

Theresa was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a strong person with a loving heart.   She loved playing cards games, bingo, sewing, taking care of her plants and enjoyed spending time with her family on the farm.  All of her family, husband, children and grandchildren were at her bedside when she passed away and went to heaven.

Survivors include her husband, Edwin J. Brungardt, Hays, KS; two sons, Cletus J. Brungardt and wife (Jeri), Wichita, KS; Edwin G. “Ed” Brungardt Jr. and wife, (Luane), Fort Worth, TX; two daughters, Susan M. Groth and husband, Jim, Dodge City, KS; Jeanne  R. Brungardt, Victoria, KS; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Vincent Dreiling, and wife, Ellen, Hays, KS; Francis Dreiling, Victoria, KS; one sister, Betty Schmidt and husband, Vernon, Hays, KS; two sisters-in-law, Edna Dreiling and Dolores Dreiling, both of Hays, KS; one brother-in-law, Dean Davis , Emporia, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Coleen Brungardt; three brothers, Fridolin “Fritz”, William and Robert Dreiling; three sisters, Alfreda Grabbe, Seraphina Davis and Caroline Schmidt; and one infant brother, Sylvester Dreiling.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 30, 2015, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church Walker, Kansas. A private inurnment will be at a later date.

A vigil service will be at 6:00 P.M. Thursday at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas followed by a Daughters of Isabella/St. Ann’s Christian Mothers rosary and Victoria V.F.W. Auxiliary memorial service at 6:30 P.M. Thursday.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday,  at Cline’s Mortuary 412 Main Street Victoria, Kansas and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Friday, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church Walker, Kansas.

Hays, Kansas – Edith M. Gottschalk, age 100, died Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.

She was born October 10, 1914, in Leibenthal, Kansas to Alex and Elizabeth Anna (Randa) Linnenberger. She married George Gottschalk on October 10, 1934 in Schoenchen, Kansas. He died August 11,1984.

She was a homemaker and worked at Weisner’s Grocery Store and Duckwall’s in Hays. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a volunteer at Hays Medical Center and a Senior Companion for many years.

Survivors include three sons, Leroy Gottschalk and wife, Rita, Ralph Gottschalk and wife, Sharon, Bob Gottschalk and wife, Betty, all of Hays, KS; two brothers, Gilbert Linnenberger and companion Lenorie, Littleton, CO; Jerry Linnenberger and wife, Vickie, Sterling, KS; one sister, Linda Lowe, CA; four sisters-in-law, Bernie Linnenberger, and Mary Evelyn Linnenberger, both of Great Bend, KS; Norine Linnenberger, Denver, CO; Vernita Linnenberger, Eads, CO; seven grandchildren, Keith (Sandy) Gottschalk, Kevin (Chris) Gottschalk, Kent (Michelle) Gottschalk, Kim Briney, Kelly (Darin) Stiles, Roger (Pam) Gottschalk, Jeff (Tammy) Gottschalk; 12 great grandchildren, Brandon, Dylan and Kaylor Gottschalk, Keeton Gottschalk, Nathan and Shara Briney, Kaley and Derck Stiles, Allyson and Lauren Gottschalk, BreAnna and Dalton Gottschalk; two step grandchildren, Kevin and Jerry Simonton

Garden City, Kansas — Dorothey Jean Rowe, age 77, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on November 20, 1937 in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of Ralph and Ollie King Snyder. A resident of Garden City since 1980 she had been the owner and operator of various beauty salons in Scott City and Garden City as well as Origins Gallery in Garden City.

On October 4, 1985 she married M.A. “Sonny” Rowe in Garden City, Kansas. He died October 10, 1992 in Hugo, Colorado.

Survivors Include:

One Daughter, Cathy Oliver of Ft. Worth, Texas;

Lucille Amelia (Staab) Parker

Lucille Amelia (Staab) Parker, age 93 of Hays, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Via Christi Village, Hays. She was born March 21, 1921 in Severin, Kansas to Jacob and Amelia (Walters) Staab. She attended the Severin School. She married Thomas F. Parker November 11, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1982.

Lucille was a homemaker and had worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in the kitchen and then worked for Travenol from 1968 – 1975. At that time she became her husband Toms’ primary caregiver until his death in 1982. She continued her giving ways by volunteering for the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and always took food to folks in need throughout the community. Lucille was a giving person always putting others ahead of herself. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

She is survived by five daughters, Cary and Jim Ryan of Columbus, OH, Claudia and Steve Pratt of Seattle, WA, Connie Applerouth of Vienna, VA, Christine and Tom Wasinger of Hays and Cheryl and David Noorani of North Carolina; two sons, Craig Parker of LaCrosse, KS and Curt and Jeanette Parker of Wichita, KS; 14 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Colin Parker; two grandchildren, Caleb and Rachel Parker; a son-in-law, Bob Applerouth; five brothers, Joseph, Seraphine, Victor, Edgar and James Parker and four sisters, Josephine Karlin, Marcella Karlin, Fedelia Karlin and Eugenia Lewis.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, January 24, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.

Visitation will be Friday 5 PM – 8 PM and Saturday 9 AM – 9:30 AM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

There will be a rosary service Friday at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7 PM

James R. Lorensen

Phillipsburg resident, James R. Lorensen, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, at the Colonial Villa in Alma, NE at the age of 81.

He was born in Minden, NE on September 18, 1933, the son of Andrew & Edna (Swanson) Lorensen. James was a retired minister.

He is survived by cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Paxton Jones and Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Graveside service & inurnment will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the North Platte Cemetery, North Platte, NE.

Harriet Jones

Harriet Jones, age 91, passed away at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas on Monday, January 19, 2015. She was born on August 22, 1923 in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Harry and Gertrude Thompson Bossemeyer. A resident of Scott City since 1947 moving from Hutchinson, Kansas, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma, Scott County Library Board, PEO, and the University of Kansas Alumni Association.

On September 20, 1947 she married Walter F. “Sonny” Jones in Hutchinson, Kansas. He passed away on April 20, 2007 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include her Two Sons – Terry “Yogi” and Emily Jones of Wichita, Kansas, Steve and Susan Jones of Lawrence, Kansas, Four Grandsons – Mike Jones of Denver, Colorado, Chris Jones of Lenexa, Kansas, Steven Jones of Wichita, Kansas, Brian Jones of Kansas City, Missouri and One Granddaughter – Allison Stedman of Kansas City, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband and One Son, Michael J. Jones.

Funeral Services will be held at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Scott City, Kansas at 10:30 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 The Reverend Don Martin.

Phillipsburg resident Fred W. Hoppe passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE, at the age of 80.

He was born April 28, 1934 in Phillips County to Fred I. & Emma (Outhet) Hoppe.

He is survived by his wife, Artyce, of Phillipsburg; his daughter, Lisa Dalme of Minneapolis, KS; son, Richard Hoppe of Belton, MO; brother, Ed Hoppe of Agra, KS; sisters, Marge Dahlgran of Shenandoah, IA and Marie Powell of Sun City, AZ; 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 8 stepchildren, 11 step grandchildren and 11 step great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Gary Davison officiating.  Private inurnment will follow at the Hoppe Cemetery.
Cremation was planned.

Mary M. ‘Madge’ Thomasson

Mary M. “Madge” Thomasson, 100, Hays, died Sunday, January 18, 2015 at the Via Christi Villages.

She was born May 7, 1914 in Burns City, TX the daughter of Henry and Caroline (Autzen) Schmitz.  She was a great cook and homemaker.  On March 4, 1935 she married Joseph “Joe” Thomasson in Gainsville, Texas. He died June 29, 1990. 

She loved to cook, and her family loved her homemade vegetable soup. She enjoyed rug hooking, playing games, and playing cards with her family and friends. She was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.

Survivors include three sons, Michael J. Thomasson of Olathe, Joseph R. Thomasson of Hays, and Paul A. Thomasson of Longview, WA, two daughters, Mary Joan Thomasson Loe of The Villages, FL, and Margaret L. Brungardt of Wichita Falls, TX, sixteen grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and twenty two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Donald Joseph Thomasson, a daughter Caroline Thomasson, a granddaughter Rhonda Joan Loe and three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the St. John’s Chapel at Via Christi Villages.  Inurnment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9:30 until service time on Tuesday at St. John’s Chapel.
