Curtis Dean Mong

Mong Pic

Curtis Dean Mong (81) departed this world to stand before his heavenly Father on Sunday, January 11th, 2015.  Curtis was born March 8th, 1933 unto John A. Mong & Barbara (Weaver) Mong.  He was the 4th of 8 loving children born & raised on the family’s farm south of Ogallah, on Big Creek.

Curtis proudly served overseas with the U.S. Army from May 1953 through April 1955 in the Korean War.

We’re told Curtis’ eyes smiled brightest on June 29th, 1957 when he took Dorothy A. Opat as his loving bride.  Nearly 52 years later I know his eyes cried the saddest tears as we all watched Dorothy go to be with Jesus on June 11th, 2009.  Grandpa proudly spoke often and very fondly of Dorothy, or Mother as he called her.

Curtis and Dorothy both made a comfortable home for their 3 children as Curtis honed his skills as a carpenter & drywaller.  After more than 40 years as a self-employed drywaller Curtis finally retired.   He traded in his ole beat up coffee thermos for a slightly stained coffee mug that he would leisurely enjoy a weak cup of coffee at his kitchen table.  He traded his drywall paddle in for a deck of playing cards so he wouldn’t be too far from a quiet yet friendly game of solitaire.  And if you couldn’t find Curtis at the kitchen table chatting with family &/or friends then odds were high you’d find him tinkering in his wood shop.

Curtis invested countless house “tinkering” which consisted of designing & building beautiful things from wood such as picture frames, doll toys, baby furniture, holiday décor and so much more.  The projects often were gifts for one of his 4 loving grandchildren, Matthew Mong and his wife Angela, Ean Mong and his wife Lindsey, Chelsea & sister Hailey Mong.  Curtis also treasured every moment with his 3 precious great grandchildren, Madison Kate & Nora Grace, and Owen Curtis.

Curtis was a proud and lifetime member of the VFW – Post 3449, and the American Legion – #197.

Curtis is survived by his three supportive children, John Mong & his wife Darla of Wakeeney, Jaine Mong of WaKeeney, and Jerry & his wife Sheri of Las Vegas, NV.  He is survived by his brothers Clayton Mong of Great Bend, Charles Mong of WaKeeney and his sister, Corlene Mong of Ogallah KS.

Preceding him in death were his parents John & Barbara Mong, his wife Dorothy Mong, and brothers Clyde Mong, Clarence Mong, Clifford Mong and Carroll Mong.

We treasure our memories of Curtis as we store thoughts of his eyes that smiled and a laugh that warmed our hearts.  We will teach those still here how Grandpa Curtis loved his family.  His legacy will not be forgotten.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.  Burial with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard will be at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Visitation and viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at WaKeeney.  Checks made to the organization may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS  67672.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.schmittfuneral.com.

Velma Mae Hullet

Velma Mae Hullet, 77, of Oakley, died January 11, 2015 in Aurora, CO. She was born to Robert and Cora Vavricka on October 27, 1937 on the farm south of Oakley in Gove County. The family sold the farm in November of 1956 and moved to Oakley on East Third Street.

While they lived less than three miles apart growing up, it was not until Kelvin Hullet returned from military service in 1954 that he saw Mae at a football game. He found her working at the drugstore and asked her out. After an eight month courtship, they married on January 24, 1958 in a home wedding. Mae and Kelvin spent almost 57 years together. Their love and bond was unbreakable and genuine. They rarely left each other’s side and Mae loved Kelvin’s sense of humor although hers was more subtle. Their marriage was a role model of service to each other, persistence and patience.

To this union, four children were born. Penny, LeaAnn, Kevin and Kelvin (Pudge). Mae loved her family. In her final days, she expressed many times that she loved them more than they could ever know. We are sure that is true. If there was a family crisis or event, she was there, with Kelvin. She made sure they were at basketball and soccer games; 4-H events; speech competitions; church programs and family gatherings. She was a bedrock of strength in times of family crisis. She was a constant friend, mentor, confident, advisor, listener and at times, the family enforcer.

For Mae, church was a cornerstone of life. She served as the church secretary for over three decades and was the chief cook for Vacation Bible School at the Christian Church for many years. In her final weeks, she leaned heavily on her faith for the strength and courage to deal with the difficult decisions and struggles that she faced. At one point in her final days, she informed the Doctors that she and God had a plan and they would get through this together or finish it.

For Mae, cooking for others was an expression of love. From Sunday dinners to the holidays, her family and extended family spent many holidays gathered around the Hullet table. Cooking holiday family dinners was a highly choreographed event that normally started weeks in advance and began in earnest at 6:00am the day of the event. Everyone was aware of her cinnamon roll baking skills and a dozen at Christmas were highly coveted by friends and family. In her later years, she made sure the grandkids were sufficiently supplied with cookies.

While always a seamstress, it was later in life that Mae discovered, or became addicted to, quilting. (At times, her kids thought an intervention might be necessary.) At any one time, multiple quilts were in process with no real intention of finishing all of them. Her favorite haunt was the Smoky Hill Quilt shop on main street. Kelvin often joined her there and they spent hours “honing her skills” or maybe it was just visiting? When traveling to Nebraska, North Dakota or Missouri, she ensured there was a side trip to a quilt shop to gather ideas…or material. Her kids, grandkids and extended family will be reminded of her love for years to come when they snuggle under one of her beautiful quilts.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Cora Vavricka; her daughter LeaAnn and sister Candy Jo Beckner.

She is survived by her husband Kelvin; children Penny (Charles) Fellholter, Bridge Port, NE, Kevin (Betty) Hullet, Bismark, ND and Kelvin (Amy) Hullet, Bismark, ND; sisters Eunice (Charles) Lindsey, Oakley, Cherry (Clair) Law, Manhattan, KS and Cora Lee Park, Oakley; brothers, Robert Lynn (Patricia) Vavricka, Ada, OK and Pat (Rita) Vavricka, Ness City, KS and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2015 at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center, Oakley. Memorials are suggested to the United Christian Church Building Fund in care of Baalmann Mortuary, PO Box 204, Oakley, KS 67748. Online condolences: www.baalmannmortuary.com.

Lucille Walters

OI39881101_walters

December 8, 1920, Carol Lucille McCarty was born to Martin W. McCarty and Minnie Maude Manely McCarty in Belleville, Kansas.  Lucille was raised in Washington Kansas along with her sister Lorna and brother J. E. McCarty.  No matter where she lived, she was always from Washington, and always looked forward to Memorial Day and class reunions.

George Hicks and Lucille McCarty were married on February 21, 1938.  Some of their best memories as a young couple were their time together when George was stationed in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho for Navy training.  They made their home in Washington where George began his career with Boogaarts and Lucille as a mother. Their first transfer was to Kearney, Nebraska. One day on a trip home to Washington as they drove through Smith Center, KS, Lucille stated “I don’t think I would want to live here” and as things go, just a few weeks later they were transferred to Smith Center.  Lucille enjoyed life for over thirty years.  Lucille and George were blessed with Jim, Peggy and Jeri over 17 years. With such an age difference, for many years her home was always open to any of the children’s friends. Family was the center of her life and she didn’t like anything better than having all generations together.

Lucille was one of the first telephone operators in Washington KS and later on after raising her family, loved working at Boltons’ but always excelled as super Mom. Following George’s death and due to failing eyesight she moved once again to Goodland, KS where Peggy’s family lived.  She never let her eyesight slow her down and loved going to the Senior Center and dances and playing cards.  She and Cliff Walters were married on January 15, 1994 and shared five years of great times until his death. In 2005 Lucille moved to Hays, KS to be near Jeri’s family.  She added to her family circle the residents and all the staff of the Good Samaritan Center which was her home for almost eight years.  Nanny was always interested in all the grandkids and great grandkid sports and loved going to games or listening on the radio and the phone calls after the activities.  In November 2014, she was so proud of the birth of her great granddaughter and namesake, Devan Lucille Stewart.

Lucille was reunited with her loved ones who passed before her on January 11, 2015, in Hays, KS just a month after celebrating her 94th birthday.  She is survived by three children, son Jim and LeAnn Hicks of Sand Springs, OK,  Andy and daughter Peggy Laue of Edwards, MO and Kim and daughter Jeri Stewart of Hays, KS.  Also nephew Dee and Sheila Latham, grandchildren David and Bev Hicks, Kevin and Gena Hicks, Wes and Deena (Laue) Clark, Scott Laue, Jace and Amanda Stewart and Kale Stewart, four great grandsons and six great granddaughters, nieces, nephews and an abundance of great friends.

Services will be held in on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Smith Center. Reminiscing and celebrating will be held at 10:30-11:30 at the VFW and graveside services at 1:00 at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Center, 2700 Canal Blvd, Hays KS 67801
