Philip D. Beougher, 57, Hays, died Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Zion, Illinois.

He was born January 8, 1958 in Oakley, Kansas the son of Clellen and Ethel (Anderson) Beougher.  He was a graduate of Wheatland High School in Grainfield in 1976.

On September 27, 2008 he married Deidria A. “Dee” Klaus in Hays. He worked for Auman Co. for many years before owning and operating Hillside Plumbing in Hays. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Kansas Walleye Association. He loved fishing and hunting, woodworking, carpentry, and remodeling houses. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, four step sons, Richie Fetterolf, Adam Fetterolf, and Dave Cooksey, all of Hays, and Randy Cooksey of Denver, CO, one step daughter Sharol Wilkins and husband Tyler of Hays, three brothers William Beougher of Gove, Jim Beougher and wife Sheila of Gove, and Steve Beougher and wife Janette of Grinell, three sisters Shirley Walker of Lathrop, MO, Judy Zerr and husband Delbert of Manhattan, KS, and Suzi Goetz and husband Stan of Dodge City, KS and ten grandchildren, Brayden, Trent, Brooklyn, Parker, Jayden, Maddy, Nate, Ben, Myles, and McKenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Jamie Lynn Beougher-Symns, a brother in law Roby Walker, and a sister in law Joyce Beougher.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, January 16, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th.  Burial will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Thursday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine or from 9:00 am until service time on Friday at the church.

John Elwin Huber

John Elwin Huber, 74, Hays, died Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born December 15, 1940 in Hays the son of John A. and Doris (Tecklenberg) Huber.

On June 12, 1971 he married Barbara Jane Krehbiel in Dighton, Kansas.  He was an associate professor of music theory, group piano, and private piano at Fort Hays State University for 45 years. Prior to teaching at FHSU he taught music at Colby High School for three years.

He earned his Bachelor of Music in music education from FHSU in 1962 and his Master of Music in music theory from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, in 1967. He twice served as acting chair of the Department of Music and was chair from 1983 until 1987. He was past chair of the FHSU Traffic Committee, was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Alpha, and was an advisor for Sigma Alpha Iota. He was collegiate chair and advisor for NAfME, was a member of KMTA and received their hall of fame award, member and state advisor of CMENC, and member of KMEA for which he received a lifetime achievement award.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a past member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church.  He received many outstanding teacher awards, outstanding artist performance coordinator awards, was an advisor to the collegiate music fraternities and professional associations, and currently served as advisor to many professional organizations and private music teachers. He was also the organizer and director of numerous piano clinics and summer piano camps at FHSU.

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, a son Derek Winston Huber and fiancé Courtney Reed of Athens, TN, a daughter Julinne Annette Kemp and husband Brian of Lawrence, KS, a sister Barbara Widick and husband Chuck of Denver, CO, and five grandchildren Lauren, Ella, Aidon, Aliea, and Rylan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Ann Huber.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th.  Burial will be in the Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hays.  Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Thursday at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the Music Department at Fort Hays State University or to the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home.

Hildagard Wasinger

Hildagard Wasinger, age 100, of WaKeeney, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Trego Manor, WaKeeney. She was born March 11, 1914, on the family farm in St. Peter to Peter and Eva Marie (Katzendorn) Spies.

Hildagard graduated from Salina Sacred Heart. She was united in marriage to Leonard Wasinger on September 18, 1934 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Collyer, and then later divorced. Hildagard spent most of her life working as a nurse’s aide at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital.

She loved to read and paint pictures. Her love of travel took her to the Holy Lands, Mexico and The Shrines. At age 90 Hildagard learned to operate a computer so she could communicate with her two sons, friends and family. She will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Harold (Jill) Wasinger of Colorado Springs, and Garold (Jean) Wasinger of Sunrise Beach, MO; six grandchildren, Anthony (Martha), Douglas (Kellie), Todd (Grethchen), Carl (Nancy), Leonard John (Tracey) and Peter; fourteen great grandchildren; and a sister Barbara Loevenstein, Quinter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Sophia Brown, Mary Hecker and bother John Spies.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 16, 2015 at Christ the King Catholic Church, WaKeeney. Burial will be in the St. Michael Cemetery, Collyer.
There will be no public viewing or visitation.

Helen Catherine Schuler

Helen Catherine Schuler, age 88, passed away at the Good Samaritan Center, Dodge City, Kansas on January 10, 2015. She was born on the farm near Arnold, Kansas on November 2, 1926 the daughter of Godfrey and Catherine Weber Flax.

She was a homemaker in her own home and also helped other people take care of their homes. She waited tables for two restaurants in Ness City, Balloon’s West and Saddle-Up. After she completed her Certified Nurse’s Aide training she worked in the Ness County Hospital and as a home health aide. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Altar Society, both of Ness City.

On May 11, 1948 she married Raymond Joseph Schuler in Ransom, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 6, 2008.

Helen is survived by four sons, Darryl Schuler and his wife, Judy, Ellis, Kansas, Fr. Stephen Schuler, SVD, Bordentown, New Jersey, Allen Schuler and his wife, Vicki, Ness City, and Myron Schuler and his wife, Dreama, Tampa, Florida; three brothers, Lawrence Flax and his wife, Betty, Dodge City, Kansas, Fr. Myron Flax, Victoria, Kansas, and Leonard Flax and his wife, Irene, Wright, Kansas; one sister, Sister Mary Ann Flax, Lexington, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years; her daughter, Janice Jones; three brothers, Eugene, Ignatius, and Herman Flax; and one sister, Rosie Flax.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Tuesday from 3:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. and on Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until 2:30 P.M..

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, January 15, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City with burial following in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and Parish vigil are tentatively planned for Wednesday evening, beginning at 6:30 at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City.

Hays, Kansas – Alfred Geist, age 85, died Friday, January 9, 2015, at his home in Hays, Kansas.

He was born May 18, 1929 in Emmeram, Kansas to Nicholas and Lidwina (Kuhn) Geist.
He married Leona Marie (Herl) on May 23, 1950 in Hays, Kansas.  She died July 16, 2003.

He was a lifetime farmer, cattleman and horseman in Ellis county.  He was a Maintenance Supervisor for St. Joseph Church, St. Agnes Convent and Kennedy School for 60 years.  He also was the sexton at St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.  He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in sports and spending time with his family.  He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry.

Survivors include five sons, Gary Geist and wife, LouAnn, Tom Geist, Ron Geist, Paul Geist and wife, Jeanne, Dale Geist and wife, Monica R. all of Hays, KS;  four daughters, Mary Barnes and husband, John, Hays, KS; Jane Zeman and husband, Reggie, Schoenchen, KS; Roseann Gottschalk and husband, Curt, Ellis, KS; Linda Skillett, Vancouver, WA; four sisters, Melinda Lang and husband, Clarence, Alice Fisher and husband, Cyril, Alberta Pfannenstiel, all of Hays, KS; Albertine Rohleder and husband, Val, Abilene, KS; 26 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; twin sons, John and Paul Geist; one daughter, Mary Lou Geist; one grandson, Michael Barnes; one sister, Irene Windholz; two brothers-in-law, Marvin Pfannenstiel and Jerome Windholz.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church Hays, Kansas.  Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.

Glen Barnett

Glen Barnett, 90, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2014. He developed a self interest in electricity and radios at a young age by reading old Popular Science magazines. He enjoyed constructing small radios from parts taken from old radios donated by friends. Discovering Amateur radio, he began building transmitters and sophisticated receivers.

At 14, he obtained his first Amateur license, by 16 he qualified for all of the commercial operator licenses issued by the FCC. Before graduating from Hays High School in 1942, he worked at KVGB, in Great Bend, Kan. as broadcast engineer. Advancing, he moved to KBIX, in Muskogee, Okla., KXRO, in Aberdeen, Wash., and then built KTMC, in McAlester, Okla. in 1946.

In 1947, he married Opal. A year later, he built Hays Radio Station KAYS, where he worked for 10 years as chief engineer, announcer and newscaster. In 1957, Glen and Opal purchased KJFJ in Webster City, Iowa. In 1959, he came to Palm Springs, Calif. as a consultant to build new studios for KCMJ. The Barnetts decided to sell the Iowa station and move to Palm Springs. All through Glen’s broadcast career, he was an outside consultant to many other radio stations and designed and built several stations in Oklahoma, Kansas, and California over the years. In 1962, he developed and built the first wireless paging service for the Coachella Valley for Chalfont Communications.

In 1962, the Barnetts filed an application for a 250 watt radio station, KWXY, to be licensed in Cathedral City, Calif. The KWXY-AM Radio Station went on the air October 4, 1964. Two power increases followed for KWXY. KWXY-FM debuted in 1969 with 3,000 watts of power, and in 1976 moved to 98.5 on the FM dial with 50,000 watt power. The station maintained the same Beautiful Music format for 46 years. It presented many unique services and enjoyed high ratings according to Arbitron.

In 2010, Glen sold KWXY. Glen Barnett was in the Broadcasting industry for 68 years. He was a member of Pacific Pioneer Broadcaster, National Association of Broadcasters, California Broadcasters Association, and Southern California Broadcasters Association. Glen is preceded in death by his wife Opal Barnett who passed away in 1998. He is survived by his wife Irma, her children, many loved friends, and loyal listeners of KWXY Radio Station.

Services were January 5, 2015 at 9:00 am in the Ramon Chapel at Forest Lawn Cathedral City, 69855 E. Ramon Road, Cathedral City, CA 92234. Interment was at Welwood Murray Cemetery. Jane F. Gottschalk, 90, Hays, died Monday, January 5, 2015 at the Greeley County Long Term Care in Tribune, Kansas.

She was born May 3, 1924 in Hyacinth, Kansas the daughter of John C. and Barbara (Steinbach) Befort. On March 2, 1943 she married Adolph Gottschalk in Schoenchen. He died January 15, 2002.

She was a farm wife and also an interior designer, working for George Steele Interiors and later owning her own interior design store, Jane’s Designs. She was also a nursing assistant at Hadley Hospital, a life coach at St. John’s New Horizons, and did in home care in Hays and surrounding communities for sixteen years. She was a CNA and completed her CMA training when she was 80 years old. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Victoria Daughters of Isabella, and was a perpetual adorer for many years.

Survivors include five sons, James W. Gottschalk and wife Marsha of Ellsworth, KS, Robert D. Gottschalk of Westminster, CO, Timothy E. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Adolph, seven brothers, Alex, Connie, Francis, Clarence, John, Jr., William, and Alois Befort, six sisters, Albina Pfeifer, Irene Wilson, Elizabeth Befort, Josephine Pfeifer, Agnes England, and Esther Stals, a son in law Jack Larkin, a grandson Troy Curnutt, a grandson in law, Rick Keele, and three great grandsons Matthew Urban, Aaron Markley, and Austin Brookhouser.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine. Burial will be in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Schoenchen, KS. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine St. A perpetual adorers rosary will be at 5:30 pm, a Victoria Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00, followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30, all on Thursday at the funeral home.

Betty Louise Woodroof, age 90, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas.

Betty was born August 26, 1924 at Parsons, Kansas, the daughter of Everett Leroy & Edna Anne Crago Clayton. Betty was home schooled by her mother, who was a teacher, until third grade when entered public school. She graduated from Parsons High School in Parsons, Kansas and continued her education earning a Bachelor Degree in Education from Pittsburg State University in 1960. During World War Two, she worked at the Kansas Army Ordinance plant in Parsons. She also worked a few years as a Para-professional in the Parsons school system. A homemaker, she had been a Leoti, Kansas resident since moving from Denison, Texas in 2013.

Betty was a member of the Waples Memorial United Methodist Church in Denison, Texas and was a member of United Methodist Women. Betty taught Sunday School and volunteered at church and in community on a regular basis. She taught the Gospel faithfully and served with a gentle conviction. Betty was a Beauchant in the Masonic Lodge in Denison, Texas

On November 14, 1945 she married Morris Dean Woodroof at Parsons, Kansas.

Wendelin F. ‘Wendy’ Stang

Victoria, Kansas – Wendelin F. “Wendy” Stang, age 69, died Monday, January 5, 2015, at Via Christi Village Hays, Kansas.

He was born February 13, 1945, in Hays, Kansas to Wendelin J. and Leona (Schamber) Stang.

He was a retired US Air Force Staff Sergeant with a total of 25 years. Then he worked twelve years in Topeka at Forbes Field.  He was a 1963 graduate of Victoria High School and worked for the Salina Police Department for four years.  He moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 2002 and moved back to Ellis county in 2010.

Survivors include one son, Jason Stang and wife, Shelley, Folsom, CA; two sisters, Dellia Brungardt, Victoria, KS; Marilyn Braun and husband, Sam, Victoria, KS; two grandsons, Nicholas and Anthony Stang; two sisters-in-law, Elvis Stang-Williams, Red Oak, TX; and Judith Stang, Cottage Grover, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vernie and Elden Stang; one sister, Velma VonFeldt; two brothers-in-law, Roy VonFeldt and Edward D. Brungardt.

Services are 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas.

Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.

David Bernard Mick, age 64, died on Friday, January 2, 2015 at his home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on January 24, 1950 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Frank and Mary Thummel Mick. He worked for the City of Scott City Street and Park Department.

He lived in Lincoln, Kansas before moving to Scott City, Kansas in 1966.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus 3rd and 4th degree knight, and the VIP Board, all of Scott City, Kansas.

On August 10, 1980 he married Alberta Shannon Jeffrey in Oakley. She passed away on December 2, 2010 in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors Include his Three Brothers – Ronald and Loretta Mick of Peryton, Texas, Richard and Carol Mick of Colby, Kansas, John Mick of Scott City, Kansas,Three Sisters -Marilee and Darrell Cramer of Scott City, Kansas, Marlene and Wilford O’Connor of Hutchinson, Kansas, Margaret and Charles Strouse of Ellsworth, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one brother, Gerard Mick; one sister, Kathleen Mick.
