Elijah James ‘Lou’ Holmes

Elijah James “Lou” Holmes, 18, of Natoma, Kansas passed away Friday, December 26, 2014, from an automobile accident.

Memorial services for Elijah are 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at the Natoma Gymnasium in Natoma, Kansas.  No viewing or visitation due to cremation being selected by the family.  Burial of Ashes will take place at a later date.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers please give to the memorial.  Memorials may be given to the Natoma High School Athletic Department and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Natoma, Kansas, is in charge of the memorial service arrangements.

Jeanette M. Klaus

Jeanette M. Klaus, 82, Hays, died Sunday, December 28, 2014 at the Via Christi Villages.

She was born December 1, 1932 in Victoria, Kansas the daughter of Otto and Clementine (Hoffman) Dinkel. On October 16, 1951 she married George J. Klaus in Hays. He died December 2, 1994. She was a homemaker and worked for many years at Wiesner’s Department Store. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the Hays Medical Center Auxiliary where she was a volunteer in the hospital gift shop. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Mike Klaus and wife Pat, Brad Klaus and wife Jan, and Greg Klaus, all of Hays, a daughter Sharon Huston and husband Bob of Hays, a brother Otto Dinkel, Jr. and wife Carol of Victoria, and five grandchildren, Whitney Klaus of Manhattan, Austin Klaus of Hays, Justin Klaus of Dallas, TX, and Cameron Klaus and Sydney Klaus, both of Hays.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 and on Wednesday from 9:00 am until 9:45, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Alice V. Honas

Alice V. Honas, age 88 of Ellis, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. She was born May 5, 1926 in Severin, Kansas to August and Anna (Miller) Schmeidler. She graduated from Girl’s Catholic High in 1942. On June 2, 1948 she married Clarence V. Honas in Severin, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2006.

Alice was a homemaker and business partner with her husband with C.V. Honas Lathing and Plastering. She also worked for the election board in Ellis for many years and she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Alice was a wonderful seamstress and cook who took pride in her family.

She is survived by four daughters, Virginia Mae Finneran, Fremont, CA, Charlene Wilson and husband Scott, Topeka, Darlene Chaput and husband Jerry, Oakley, Diane Kuhn and husband Pat, Ellis; one son, Randy Honas and wife, Wendy, Ellis; two brothers, Edward and Norman Schmeidler of Hays; a sister, Rita Schmeidler of Hays; twelve grandchildren, Clara Finneran, Maureen Finneran, Kathryn Krueger, Derek Wilson, Jenny Unger, Jera Potter, Allison Chaput, Victoria Goetz, Amanda Shannon, Anna Kuhn, Taylor Honas, Samuel Honas and Toby Honas as well as thirteen great grandchildren, Sophia, Lucas and Grace Janson, Roman Wilson, Nicholas Aherns, Hudson and Leah Potter, Owen Goetz, Taegan and Lane Shannon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Pancratius, Jerome and Leo Schmeidler; three sisters, Severina Lang, Margaret Bittel and Frances Schmeidler; a grandchild, Nichole Diane Kuhn and a great grandchild, Kaden Lee Shannon.

Funeral services will be 2 PM Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis.

Visitation will be Tuesday 5 PM – 8 PM at St. Mary’s Church and Wednesday 1 PM – 1:30 Pm at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th  Ellis, KS 67637

A parish vigil and rosary service will be 7 PM Tuesday at the church.

Frank Joseph Schneller

Frank Joseph Schneller, age 102, formerly of Ellis passed away December 25, 2014, at The Atriums in Overland Park, KS. He was born May 7, 1912 in Ellis, KS to Leon and Mary (Erbert) Schneller. He married Margaret (Philipp) in Ellis, Kansas September 12, 1936.

Frank worked at Beech Aircraft as a machinist in tool and die for 38 years. He attended Joseph’s Military Academy and received a degree in Chemistry. He was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two sons, Lee Schneller and Dave Schneller; 7 Grandchildren: Christina Pokorny, Michael Schneller, John Schneller, Steven Schneller, Annie Schneller, Joseph Schneller, and Linda Thorne and 17 Greatgrandchildren: David and Evan Pokorny, Audrey and Ella Thorne, Zack, Annia, Sophis, Michelle, Keyton, Jacob, Clara, Calvin, Jack, Jonathan, Josh, Ben and William Schneller

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother: Charles Schneller; Sisters, Katy Huber and Theresa Stromeyer.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow services in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Robert “Bob” Draper, 58, Phoenix AZ, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, November 20, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born October 26, 1956, in Eldorado, KS and was a 1974 graduate of Hays High School.

He was a longtime worker in the oilfield in Kansas and California.

He is survived by three sons, Shawn Draper and wife Jennifer of Shawnee, Kansas, Brent Draper and wife Elaine of Leawood, Kansas and Shane Draper of Overland Park, Kansas; 2 daughters, Miki Koerner of Overland Park, Kansas and Megan Draper of Lawrence, Kansas; 5 Grandchildren, Tyler, Carly, Jackson, Emma and Theodore; a brother, Randy Draper of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and a sister, Sherry Anderson and husband Randy of Centennial, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and June Draper; and brother, Michael Draper.

Services will be held at a later date, to be announced, at Brock’s Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. Private family inurnment will be at Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays.

Timothy Lee ‘Tim’ Taylor

Timothy Lee “Tim” Taylor, age 34, of Ellis passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Hays Medical Center. He was born September 25, 1979 in Lexington, Nebraska to Charles James and Myrtis Kathleen (Titus) Taylor.

Tim was currently the Kitchen Manager at Casey’s General Store in Ellis. He was an artist enjoying drawing and animals especially his dog Misky.

Tim is survived by his parents of Ellis; a sister, Jemie Lemman and husband Charles of Ellis; nieces and nephews, Alaysia and Caleb Werteaberger, Dusty, Bailey and Hunter Lepper, Austin and Kendra Lemman; a great nephew, Aiden Werteaberger and his grandfathers, John Haver Taylor of Orleans, Nebraska and Thomas Lee Titus of Cozad, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Karoline Taylor and Zelma Ilene Titus.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial will follow services in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis.

Visitation will be Sunday4 PM – 8 PM at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th  Ellis, KS 67637 and Monday 9:30 AM until service time at the church.

Lois L. Bowman

Logan resident, Lois L. Bowman, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at Logan Manor in Logan, Kan., at the age of 94.

She was born in Phillips County, Kan., on May 26, 1920, the daughter of Rueben A. & Mary A. (Mitchell) Chestnutt. Lois was a homemaker and mother.

Survivors include her son, Robert Bowman, of Logan and a brother, Melvin Chestnutt of Ogallala, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 29, at 10:00 a.m. in the Logan Funeral Home, with Pastor Troy Buss officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Mrs. Bowman will lie in-state on Sunday, Dec. 28, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Kayrene (Zillinger) Cates

Speed, KS resident Mary Kayrene (Zillinger) Cates passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 at the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 28.

She was born May 14, 1986 in Phillipsburg, the daughter of Kerry & Marcia (Grauerholz) Zillinger. Mary was a rancher and managing partner of Signature Nursing.

She is survived by her parents, Marcia Nelson & husband, Terry, of Almena, KS and Kerry Zillinger & wife, Kelli, of Columbus, KS; her son, Kayhill Cates; three sisters: Andrea Murray of Omega, OK, and Klare Givens and Kitt Zillinger, both of Almena, KS; maternal grandfather, Raymond Grauerholz of Phillipsburg; and paternal grandparents, Andrew & Betty Zillinger, also of Phillipsburg.

Funeral services will be held Sat., Dec. 27, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lorna Paulus and Joel Hiesterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Phillips County.

The casket will remain closed. Friends may sign the book on Friday, Dec. 26, from 9:00 a.m. –9:00 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Kirk Sessin, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col., age 55, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, in Topeka.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at Christ Lutheran Church, 106 East 8th Street, in Ellis.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until 12 noon and again 2 p.m. until service time, all at the church.

Nola Conley

Nola Conley, age 82, of Quinter, passed away Friday, December 19, 2014 at Gove County Medical Center, Long Term Care, Quinter. She was born December 30, 1931, on the family farm in Gove County to Horace B. and Nettie (Lathrop) Jamison.

Nola attended Sunshine County Elementary School and Graduated from Gove County High School in 1950. On March 24, 1951, Nola was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Conley in Quinter. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage together, until Bob’s death on December 18, 2003. Along with being a loving homemaker, she spent over 30 years in the medical field working in both the hospital and nursing home. She played various roles with the most notable being Operating Room Technician. Nola was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Daughters of Isabella in Park. She was also very active with the Senior Companions. She enjoyed anything that involved spending time with her grandchildren and was known among friends and family for her loving hugs. Nola never met a stranger. She will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include three sons, Richard (Carol) of Sharon Springs, Kirby (Judy) of Wichita, and Keith (Edna) of Holcomb; six grandchildren, Mark (Lacy), Mike (Desire), Aron (Melody), Alan (Sheredy), Andrea (Chris) Greene, and Luke; seven great-grandchildren, Abby, Haley, Tyler, Liam, Scarlet, Hallie, and Jarek; a sister, Melva Cooper of Quinter; and a brother Jim Jamison of Alexandria, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and five brothers, Gerald, Carl, Harold Lloyd, Dwight, and an infant.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Park. Burial will be in the Baker Township Cemetery, Quinter.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday with a parish vigil service at 7:00, both at the funeral home in Quinter.

Alice Dell Hoppe

Phillipsburg resident Alice Dell Hoppe passed away Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, KS at the age of 78.

She was born April 22, 1936 in Burr Oak, Kansas, the daughter of Forest & Retha (Hawkins) Foster. Alice had worked as a secretary in the medical lab at the Phillips County Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Sharla Stanek of Tulsa, OK and Chris Stanek of Overland Park; stepchildren, Lisa Hoppe Dalme of Minneapolis, KS and Richard Hoppe of Belton, MO; 3 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Calvary Baptist Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Mark Gervais officiating. Graveside service will follow at 4:15 p.m. in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, KS.

Alice Hoppe will lie in-state on Friday, Dec. 19, from noon – 9 p.m. and again Saturday from noon – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.
