Mildred J. (Olson) Schemm

Lifelong Sharon Springs, KS resident, Mildred J. Schemm, 89, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, KS.

Mildred was born on December 28, 1929 in Neodesha, KS to Alben and Nellie (Sandstedt) Olson. She was an only child.

Mildred attended school in Sharon Springs and graduated from Wallace County Community High School in 1947. She then went on and attended one year of college at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. On November 26, 1950, Mildred married Dean Schemm in the Methodist Church in Sharon Springs. To this union, three sons were born; Darrel, Rodney, and Kenneth.

After Mildred and Dean were married, they moved to the farm south of Wallace where Dean had lived most of his life. There they had a dairy farm and milked cows for 25 years and continued to farm until their retirement.
For 75 years, Mildred served as the pianist and organist at the Sharon Springs Lutheran Church where she was a member. She was also a member of the Dinas Community Club and the Music Club. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint, counted cross stitch and enjoyed helping Dean with woodworking. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, taking them fishing and water skiing.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her son Kenneth.

She is survived by her loving husband Dean of 68 years, her son Darrel (Sandy) Schemm of Wallace County, KS, and Rodney (Cynthia) Schemm of Guymon, OK. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and numerous extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Mildred were held on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 10:00 AM MT at the Sharon Springs Lutheran Church with Pastors Phil Knox and Galen Crippen officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon Springs Cemetery, Sharon Springs, KS.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM MT at the Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Sharon Springs.

Memorials may be designated to the Fort Wallace Memorial Association or to the Oaks Indian Mission and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Judi Morse

Judi Morse, 66, of Atwood, went home to the Lord on Sunday, July 14, 2019. Judi was born November 22, 1952, to Joseph and Patricia (Miller) Esch. One of ten children, Judi learned the value of hard work and compassion.

Judi went to Central Catholic Grade School and graduated from Union High School, both in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She met Bob Morse in 1975 and they moved to Colorado in 1978. They married May 7, 1979, after a three and a half year courtship. Together they devoted their lives to raising their six children.

Judi earned a business degree from Community College of Aurora and went on to be Plant Manager of two elastics factories. She was a true leader to her employees and took pride in her work.

Judi loved the outdoors, going for rides, scouting for deer, and especially loved her puppies, Daisy and Peaches. Peaches gave her great comfort in her final years.

Not only extremely intelligent, Judi was also wise beyond her years. She held true to ther convictions and had integrity and grit. She had an infectious laugh and her smile could brighten the darkest of rooms. She had character, humor, determination, decency and kindness of spirit. She believed in humanity, had a deep love for her family and friends, and had a strong faith in God.

No matter her struggles, she always had a kind word and helping hand to offer. When Bob and Judi moved to Atwood, they settled in quickly and were welcomed by the community.

Judi leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, success, hope, love and faith in the hearts of all who loved her.

Judi was preceded in death by her parents and her younger sister, Lizzy. She is survived by her husband Bob; siblings, Debbie Jo, Paul, Steve, Mary, Loretta, Lesa, Katie and Anna; children, Marie, Keith, Craig, Debbie, Shawn and Stacy; 15 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Dreiling Schmidt Cancer Center, Hays, KS, KU Med Center, KC, KS and Rawlins County Health Center, Atwood, KS.

They would also like to say a special thank you to Judi’s friends at Bible Study, Cheryl Pearce and lifelong friend, Val Smith, for their continued love and support.

Judi’s family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on September 7, 2019, at the First Christian Church, Atwood, from noon to 5:00 p.m. They would love to see everyone there.

Cynthia Sheley

Cynthia Sheley, age 62, of Ellis, Kansas passed away on July 25, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis.

David Lewis Simpson

David Lewis Simpson was born July 29, 1937, at the family farm southwest of Oberlin, Decatur County, Kansas. David was the fifth child and only son born to Holden and Neva (Landau) Simpson. He passed away July 24, 2019 in Dresden, KS at the age of 81.

David started school at Walnut Grove School at the age of four. He always said they needed one more student to keep the school open. The teacher would let him play with his toys outside during school. He later went to school in Oberlin and graduated with the Class of 1954. He recently celebrated his 65th Class Reunion.
On September 28, 1958, David married Dian Wagner in Culbertson, NE. To this union, four children were born. Dian died in September of 1999.

David worked for Culligan. Later, he drove a water truck for many years in the oil field for Murfin Drilling. He helped his dad at the farm and after several years, he went to farming fulltime. David enjoyed his cattle and everything about farming. He especially loved picking corn. He also loved his John Deere tractors. David liked watching NASCAR racing and went to several races in Kansas City with his son, Mike.

In August of 2002, he met Shirley Nuss and they were married on September 18, 2004 in Oberlin.

David is survived by his wife, Shirley of Oberlin, KS; children: Mike Simpson and Don Simpson of Aurora, CO, Kathy (Tom) Carroll of Atwood, KS, and Carol Lennington of Goodland, KS; two step-daughters: Debra (Brian Carpenter) Nuss and Kimberlee (Steve) Laga of Englewood, CO; grandchildren: Jason (Shanna) Carroll and Travis Carroll of Atwood, KS, Brett (Katie) Carroll of Colby, KS, Nichole (Jay) O’Brien of Scott City, KS, Brooke (Jared Marcotte) Lennington of Lenexa, KS, Hunter Lennington of Lenexa, KS, and Cade Simpson of Aurora, CO; three step-grandchildren: Luka Nuss-Ocken of Elkhorn, NE, Brayden Laga and Shay Laga of Englewood, CO; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

David was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dian; four sisters: Nancy (Ed) Hines, Dorothy (Bill) Lenaburg, Blanche (Cliff) Schissler, Carolyn Sixbury; grandson, James David Carroll; niece, Janice Kogl; in-laws: Arthur and Wanda Wagner, Clarence and Fern Stearns, James Screen, Duane Wagner, Richard Wagner, Harold LeRoy Stearns and Clarence Stearns.

James Lee ‘Jim’ Kuhn

James Lee “Jim” Kuhn, age 73, former Victoria, Kansas, resident, died Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Ascension Hospital St. Francis Wichita, Kansas. He was born October 2, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Emil A. and Luella M. (Walters) Kuhn.

He was self-employed as a contract house painter for many years. He grew up in Victoria, and attended Victoria High School. He lived in Victoria then moved to Munjor for a few years, and has lived the last two years in the Pioneer Lodge Nursing Home in Coldwater, Kansas. He enjoyed working on Mopar cars and drag racing motor sports.

Survivors include two sons, Geoffrey Kuhn and wife, Robin, Hays, KS; Scott Kuhn and Mary Pierson, Stockton, KS; one daughter, Stacey Brackney and husband, Charley, Yukon, OK; two sisters, Helene Staton and Carol Kuhn, both of Hays, KS; one sister-in-law, Gail Kuhn, Junction, MO; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Neil A. Kuhn and Dave Kuhn; and one niece, Jennifer Bishop.

Graveside services and inurnment will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, July 26, 2019 at St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

Samantha Rae Staab, 32, Pensacola, Florida, died Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at her home.

Muriel Darlene Day

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MURIEL DARLENE (SHOEMAKER) ADAMS – DAY

Darlene was the first-born child of Ed and Lena (Aumiller) Shoemaker. She was born on March 15, 1922 in Adell Township, Sheridan County, Kansas near the old Chicago Church in her Great Grandma Wales home. The family later moved a mile and a half east to a farm just west of Lucerne. She lived there until she was eleven years old when her family moved to Lenora.

The first five years of school was at the old Chicago country school. She went on to complete high school and a Normal Training course to teach in Lenora. She graduated as Salutatorian. Then she taught one year before getting married to Donald Eugene Adams. Two children were born to this union. Donald died in April 1945, leaving her a widow with two small children. On May Day in 1947, she married Jesse Allen (Kelly) Day. To this marriage he brought three children, Betty Lee, Donald Jesse, and Violet Janette Day. She brought her two children, Edward Lynn and Donna Jean Adams. To their union two more children were added, Roberta Alene and Robert Allen Day.

She led a busy life, belonging to many clubs and organizations including Rebekah Lodge, and Eastern Star, receiving recognition for 65 plus years of membership. She also belonged to FCE, study clubs, card clubs, Women’s Fellowship, and Solomon Valley Community Club. She held many offices in all these activities. She was a 4-H leader for many years and taught adult Sunday School for 33 years. She began China painting in 1977 and served as Treasurer of the State’s China Painting Organization. She has painted over 300 baby shoes that have been distributed all over the world, not to mention tea sets for all her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters. Belt buckles were painted for the male children. She also painted plates, jewelry, jewelry boxes, pictures, and so forth. She lived through the stock market crash, the great depression, World War II, and the dust-bowl days of the “dirty thirties”. Her biggest joy was to share painting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Stanley and Leslie Shoemaker; both of her husbands; two sons, Donald Day and Edward Adams; two sons-in-law, Joseph Nech and Alfred Beneke; one daughter-in-law, Corine Day; three grandsons, Shannon Day, Paul Dominic Krizek, and David Joel Peterson; and great-grandson, Shane Day.

Survivors include: five children, Betty (Patrick) Keener; Violet (Kenneth) Krizek; Donna Beneke; Roberta Nech; Robert (Kellie) Day; one daughter-in-law, Mary Adams; one brother, Merrill Dee (Joann) Shoemaker; one sister, Lyla Ilavere (Wesley) Wilson; one sister-in-law, Agnes Lyon; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.

Marvin Henry Bohl

Marvin Henry Bohl, son of Henry and Bertha (Rading) Bohl, was born August 28, 1931 in Phillipsburg, KS and passed away at the Phillips County Retirement Center, Phillipsburg, KS on July 23, 2019 at the age of 87.

Marvin grew up in Phillipsburg and attended the Phillipsburg Grade School and High School. On June 29, 1953, Marvin and Leola Mae Morgan were married in Phillipsburg. Following their marriage, they moved to Wichita, KS where Marvin worked for Boeing until 1971. The family moved back to Phillipsburg for several years and in 1977, relocated to Norton, KS. After Leola passed away in 1980, Marvin lived in a couple of different locations, including Kirwin and Agra. Marvin moved back to Phillipsburg in 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leola; an infant son, Terry; a daughter, Connie; a sister and several brothers.

Survivors include one son, Tom Bohl of Englewood, CO; two daughters, Patti Berney and husband, Rand of Austin, TX and Teresa Capps of Jonesboro, GA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

A private interment was held in the Norton Cemetery, Norton, KS.

Joan ‘Mom’ Virginia Howlett

Joan “Mom” Virginia Howlett, 86, of Russell, Kansas, and former Overland Park, Kansas, resident died on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Joan was born on August 04, 1932, in Missoula, Montana. She grew up in Montana and Washington. She lived in Overland Park, Kansas, for many years and worked as a secretary in the oil and gas industry, but her most cherished job was being a mom. She was a longtime member in the catholic church. She enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs football, Kansas City Royals baseball, going out on the town with her friends and family, visiting dive bars, traveling and just having fun. “It takes a village!”

Surviving family include her daughter Sheila Thacker of Russell, Kansas, and son Blake Howlett and wife Carrie of Kansas City, Kansas; sister Pat Waggoner of Walla Walla, Washington; many nieces and nephews; her second family Shirley, Joe and Meredith Henderson of Overland Park, Kansas and Debbie and Gary Laughery of Prairie Village, Kansas. She was preceded by her parents.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at a later date. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Barbara Ann (Drumeller) Booker

Barbara Ann (Drumeller) Booker, age 79, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas with her son at her bedside after a recent protracted illness. Barbara was born in Colorado Springs on February 14, 1940 to Clarence and Lydia (Shoemaker) Drumeller. After graduating high school, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. On February 24, 1963, she married Gilbert Booker in Colorado Springs. Together they had one child, Dr. Scott Booker also of Garden City.

Barbara worked full time from 1962-2018 in a variety of fields including manager of a personal finance branch of CIT, medical records clerk in Leoti, Kansas, City Clerk of Tribune, Kansas for 10 years, owner/manager of Triple B Dude Ranch in Woodland Park, Colorado, legal secretary for a law office in Leoti, Kansas and medical records supervisor at Plaza Medical Center for 20 years. She also worked for many decades giving piano and organ lessons to hundreds of children and adults as well as being organist/pianist/choir director for church organizations over the years.

She is survived by her son Scott, daughter-in-law Joan (Trent) Booker of Garden City; granddaughter, Ashley Anne Booker of Wichita; grandson, Christian Alexander ( Alex) Booker also of Garden City.

Her passion for working with the youth group at Coat of Many Colors Lutheran Church was one of her most cherished activities and she often spoke fondly of her memories with the children that attended.

She will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 25, 2019 from 2-8 pm at Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Edgar ‘Ed’ Herman Wetzel

Edgar “Ed” Herman Wetzel, 87, died July 23, 2019, at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina. He was born February 28, 1932, to Herman and Elsie (Weiss) Wetzel in Ford County. He was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church south of Offerle, Kansas. He attended grade school near Offerle. He also attended and graduated from Dodge City Senior High School in 1950.

He entered the United States Air Force on December 10, 1951, during the Korean War, graduating #1 in the Radar and Electronics class. He earned the rank of A1C, and was honorably discharged on December 5, 1955. Edgar married Helen Maskus on December 28, 1952, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Hodgeman County. He moved to Great Bend in December 1955 and was the service manager at Martin Jaeger for 20 years. Ed was the owner and operator of Ed’s TV and Air Conditioning, traveling from Odessa, Texas to Moline, Illinois, repairing and installing electrical, television, sound systems and air conditioning systems for 25 years.

Ed was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the count team, buildings and grounds team and was a former head usher; he was also a member of the American Legion Argonne Post 180 in Great Bend. His interests included hunting, trap shooting, bowling, carpentry and coaching. Ed enjoyed time spent with family, from days spent on baseball and softball fields, to weekends at the lake. He was always lending a helping hand, love and support.

He is survived by his wife Helen of the home; his children, Randy Wetzel and wife Brenda of Great Bend, and Renee Holl and husband Dennis of St. John; one grandson, Dennis Price of Wichita; three great-grandchildren, Haley Jackson and husband Chris of Russell, Cody Piland of Great Bend, and Ava Winters of Winfield; two great-great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Kellie Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carol Wetzel; and one grandchild, Michelle Price.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 26, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Pastor Barbara Jones and Pastor Jon Brudvig presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
