Logan resident Patti L. Jussel passed away Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan at the age of 58.
Patti was born April 17, 1956 in Aurora, Colorado, the daughter of Harold L. and Jane L. (Elliott) Sparks.
She was united in marriage to James J. Jussel on July 13, 2007 in Westminster, Colorado. He survives.
Other survivors include a son, Casey Collier of Logan; a daughter, Melonie Janssen & husband, David of Ault, Colorado; and 4 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Patti will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2014 in the Logan Funeral Home, Logan, with Pastor Ted Stapelton officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.
Patti will lie in state from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and again Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Logan Funeral Home.

Mary Rose Henderson, age 86, of Ellis passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. She was born May 1, 1928 in Munjor, Kansas, to Peter and Sophia (Koerner) Miller.
She married Gay Henderson may 27, 1952 in Great Bend, Kansas. He preceded her in death August 20, 2005.
Mary was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting and crocheting. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Ellis Ladies VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by four children, Tom Henderson and wife Norma of Hays, Paula Lerch and husband Lutz of Commerce City, CO, Marla Worley and husband Paul of Ringling, OK and Marion Henderson and wife Vicki of Cheyenne Wells, CO. 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Shauna Zimmerman of Bloomington, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters and 9 brothers.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM with a parish vigil service at 6 PM all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis.

Cynthia Osborne Sack, 61, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2014, with her family by her side.
Cindy was born on July 2, 1953, in Salina, Kansas, to Richard and Barbara (Scott) Osborne. She graduated from Hays High School in 1971 and received her Nursing Degree from Barton County Community College in 1979. Cindy is also a graduate of Fort Hays State University.
Cindy married Roger Sack on July 31, 1976, in Hays, Kansas. She was retired and a member of New Hope Community Church in Aurora, Colorado.
She is survived by her husband, Roger; a son, Cory Sack and wife, Ann, of Parker, Colorado; a granddaughter, Madeline, and expected grandson this Christmas; a daughter, Rachel Sack, of Aurora, Colorado; a brother, Scott Osborne and wife Rebecca, of Nashville Tennessee; a nephew, Nick Osborne and wife, Tina, of McCook, Nebraska; a nephew, Alecsander, and expected nephew later this month.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robin Osborne.
Services will be October 11, 2014, at 11am, at New Hope Community Church in Aurora, Colorado.
Juanita Augustine, age 86, of Ellis passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014 in Ellis. She was born February 20, 1928 in WaKeeney, Kansas to Bill and Vera (Hyde) Knaus. She married Gilbert J. Augustine Sr. July 14, 1945. He preceded her in death.
Juanita was a homemaker, avid reader, and proud supporter of the military. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Juanita was extremely patriotic and loved her country. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis.
She is survived by three sons, Gilbert J. Augustine Jr of Hays, Gary L. Augustine and wife Janice of Wichita and Greg L. Augustine and wife Debbie of Ellis; a brother, Robert Knaus; a half sister, Sherry Knaus; 9 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a great grandson, Clayton A. Dinkel and a daughter-in-law, Shelia Augustine.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Glade resident Lewis A. “Doc” Pumphrey Jr. passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at his home at the age of 79.
He was born in Fall River, KS on May 15, 1935, the son of Lewis A. & Hester Vandella (Jones) Pumphrey. His wife, Patty, preceded him in death on June 24, 2011.
He is survived by three sons: Foy of Eagle Rock, MO, Wyatt of Phillipsburg, KS and Clint of Glade; five grandchildren; a brother, J.B. Pumphrey of Muskogee, OK; and a sister, Janette Wheaton of Kensington, KS.
The family chose cremation. Friends may sign his memory book Tuesday & Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg.
A graveside service and inurnment will be held for Lewis & Patty Pumphrey on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10:30 a.m. in the Marvin Cemetery, Glade, KS, with Pastor Gary Davison officiating.

Thomas Eugene Vogel, age 83, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas. He was born on February 14, 1931 in Ness County, Kansas the son of Raymond and Ida Leiker Vogel. He was a farmer and a Soil Conservation Agent.
He married Gloria Schneidewind on September 12, 1960 in Ness City, Kansas. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus, Ness City.
He is survived by his son, Kelly Vogel (Yi Zhi), Lawton, Oklahoma; two daughters, Shelly Gomez (Wayne), Denver, Colorado and Christi Vogel, Pearland, Texas; two sisters, Joan Slagle, Larned, Kansas and Patty Rinker, Fallbrook, California; three grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Vogel.

Celestine J. “Whitie” Giebler, age 81, of Ellis passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Hays Medical Center. He was born July 3, 1933 on the family farm south of Ellis, Kansas to Karl and Frances (Dechant) Giebler.
Whitie worked as a handyman for many years and also drove a truck working for a mine in Leadville, Colorado and he enjoyed fishing. He was also a US Navy Veteran.
He is survived by a son, Patrick Giebler and wife Zeeney of Honolulu, Hawaii; a daughter, Valerie Peters and husband Roland of Omaha, Nebraska; three brothers, Tony of Hartsel, Colorado, Larry of Littleton, CO and Edmund of Hays, Kansas; a special niece and care taker, Mary Jane Davidson of Hays, Kansas
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and August and three sisters, Mary Knoll, Cecelia Boza and Rose Kisner.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM, Monday, September 15, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis, KS. Burial with military honors by the Ellis VFW will follow in the church cemetery.

Ruthona K. Wasinger, age 65, of Hays passed away Friday, September 12, 2014 at Hays Medical center. She was born January 30, 1949 in Lincoln, Kansas to Philip and Leadvrye Houston. She graduated from Lincoln High School and Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She married David Wasinger June 8, 2001 in Hays, Kansas.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Hays.
She is survived by her husband, David of the home; a son, Philip Whitaker of Larned, Kansas; a brother, Bill Houston of Lincoln, Kansas and a sister, Marilyn Moore of Smithville, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jim Houston and a sister, Phyllis Lonnenberger
Private family graveside services were held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Lincoln City Cemetery in Lincoln, Kansas. There will be a memorial service held at a later date at the First Baptist Church in Hays.

Alfreda “Freda” Elizabeth (Brungardt) Schmidt, 97, of Hays died Friday, September 12, 2014 at Via Christi Assisted Living Facility in Hays. She was born on May 15, 1917 in Victoria, Kansas to Michael and Elizabeth (Boxler) Brungardt. She attended grade school in Victoria, and graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica High School, Atchison, Kansas, in 1935. Freda married Lucius Schmidt on June 15, 1937 in Catherine, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1993.
She worked in Hays at the telephone office until the time of her marriage. Freda took care of her extended and immediate family with great love and kindness. She was known as an excellent cook, and had her own published cookbook of recipes. Her jobs outside of the home included taking census and cooking at Jefferson School. She also volunteered at St. Anthony’s Hospital, for the Red Cross, and at St. John’s Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella.
Survivors include three daughters and their families: Clarice (Joe) Chism of Mesa, Arizona, Agnes (Bill) Wierman of Hays, Kansas, and Mary Ann (Harry) Stevenson of Denver, Colorado. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: JoLynn (Frank) Bakes, Janna (Ron) Cescaline, Anne (Matt) Schulte, Amy Wierman, Bill (Tammy) Wierman, John (Wendy) Chism, Chris (Natalie) Stevenson. Affectionately called Nana and Grandma by many, she will be missed by her great-grandchildren: Kati (Addison Carter) Bakes, Frank J. Bakes, Jenna Schulte, Julie (Devin) Weston, Lynn Bakes, Michael Schulte, Jeffrey Watson, Nick Chism, Emily Schulte, Travis Wierman, Isak Stevenson, Austin Stevenson and Ryan Chism; a brother, John Brungardt of Kansas City; two sister-in-laws and a brother-in-law. She was well-loved by her extended family, including numerous nieces and nephews.
Freda was preceded in death by her brothers: Killian (Pete) and Emmanuel (Tom), and by her sisters: Alice, Adolfina (Fina), Clara, Mary, Sophie, and Hubertine (Tina).
Funeral Mass will be 11:30 AM Tuesday September 16, 2014 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays, KS. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

G. Earl Slagle, age 88, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Tuesday evening, August 26, 2014, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.
He was born on December 23, 1925, in rural Beeler, Kansas the son of Vern and Ivy (Prose) Slagle.
During World War II, Mr. Slagle served as a Merchant Marine until his honorable discharge in 1945.
On September 16, 1945, in Dighton, Kansas, he was united in marriage to the former Wanda I. Orrell. They made their home in Manhattan for over 60 years. Mrs. Slagle preceded him in death on March 12, 2014.
Mr. Slagle was a longtime employee of Kansas State University where he worked as a Forestry Technician, prior to his retirement in 1990. Following his retirement he went to work for Winrock International which was working on a reforestation project in Pakistan.
Mr. Slagle was a member of the United States Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II, the Yard Art Classics Car Club of Manhattan and founding member of CREST (Citizens Radio Emergency Standby Team) in Manhattan. Outside of his memberships he was an artist with a permanent exhibit of his artwork at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas, Kansas. Other areas of interest were being a poet, inventor, private pilot, world traveler, gardener, beekeeper and wood and metal worker.
He is survived by three sons: Tom Slagle and his wife Tammy, Lincoln, Kansas; Gary Slagle and his wife Rhonda, Belvue, Kansas; Stacy Slagle and his wife Norma, Wamego, Kansas, one daughter: Julie Slagle and her partner M.L. of Manhattan, Kansas, and a son-in-law: Rich Bassett of Dover, Kansas. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Shannon Showalter and his wife Tawnia, Perry, Kansas, Jared Slagle and his wife Jessica, St. Marys, Kansas, Matthew Slagle, Wamego, Kansas, Melissa Janulis and her husband Wade, Manhattan and three great grandchildren: Tate and Hailey Showalter and Cooper Slagle. He is also survived by one brother: Eldon Slagle, Manhattan, Kansas and a sister-in-law: Gertrude Slagle of Pratt, Kansas.
In addition to his wife Wanda, he was also preceded in death by one daughter: Ronda Bassett, a grandson: Strider Showalter, three sisters: Velma Slagle Stout, Bernie Slagle Sculley Nauerth, Neva Slagle Bollinger and a brother: Floyd Slagle.
The family received friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Memorial services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Wesley Paddock officiating.
Inurnment of the cremated remains will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014, 10:30 A.M. in the Buda Cemetery near Beeler, Kansas.
