Clarence W. Mai

Clarence W. Mai, 87, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, at his home in Hays. He was a lifelong resident of WaKeeney, only recently moving to Hays. He was born April 20, 1926, in rural WaKeeney to William and Amelia (Flagler) Mai.

Clarence was a 1944 graduate of Trego Community High School. He went on to serve our country in the United States Army during World War II. He earned many medals, including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was injured in action in March of 1945.

On September 1, 1946, Clarence was united in marriage to Betty L. Sparks at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage together. They owned and operated the Phillips 66 Station in WaKeeney for many years. Clarence had a lifelong hobby in Photography, having taken thousands of pictures throughout his lifetime.  He was a coin collector, loved listening to music, and enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days.  He was an avid sports fan, and he always kept Kansas State University sports at the top of his list. Of all the things he enjoyed doing, spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was something he cherished. Clarence will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son, Bob and wife Darlene of Scranton; two daughters Loni and husband Howard Reece of Topeka, and Kathleen and husband Kerry of Hays; eleven grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard and wife Charlotte of Denver, Colorado; and a sister Edith and husband Walt Mabry of Yakima, Washington.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, LeRoy and Emil “Sammy”; and a son, David.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of WaKeeney. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Scott Randolph

Shawnee resident Scott Randolph, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Salina Regional Medical Center in Salina at the age of 50.

He was born in Logan on June 13, 1963, to Victor and Margaret (Kitchen) Randolph. His stepfather, Mark VanScyoc (Pappy), preceded him in death.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret VanScyoc, of Osborne; his father, Victor Randolph, of Abilene; his daughter, Chandler Brooks, of Shawnee; and three sisters: Renee Gordon of Luray, Shelly Pfeifer of Salina, and Toni Standley of Osborne.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Christian Church, Osborne, with Pastor Davenport officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the Christian Church in Osborne from 5 -8 p.m.

Wayne Joseph Augustine

Wayne Joseph Augustine, age 73, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at his home in Hays, Kansas.

He was born October 4, 1940, in Hays, Kansas, to Michael and Anna (Weaver) Augustine.  He married Ann (Leiker) on March 31, 1962, in Hays, Kansas.

He was a retired electrician, and U.S. Navy veteran. He lived most of his life in Hays, Kansas, and was a member of the Hays American Legion and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church both of Hays, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Augustine, of the home; two sons, Don Augustine and wife, Kim, Russell, KS; Darin Augustine and wife, Jill, Wichita, KS; one daughter, Dianne Lindeman and husband, Dean, Gilbert AZ; two brothers, Harold “Gus” Augustine and wife, Vera, Hays, KS; Kenneth Augustine and wife, Barbara, of OK;  three sisters, Betty Flannery; Valarie Ader; Velma Hornet; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Augustine, Hays, KS; Mary Augustine, Shawnee, KS; one brother-in-law, George Pfeifer; seven grandchildren, Nick Augustine; Alexis, Tristen, Samatha, Aiden and Mallory Lindeman; and Chloe Augustine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Keith Alan Augustine; one granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth Augustine; two brothers, Leroy “Dick” Augustine; Mike Augustine; two sisters, Mary Ann Dreiling; Jeanie Pfeifer; one infant brother, Dale Augustine; and one infant sister, Marjorie Augustine.

Services are 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601, with a flag presentation by the Hays V.F.W.

A visitation is from 9:30 to 11:00 A. M. Saturday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

GORHAM — Anna Catherine (Brown) Jacobs, age 89, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Russell Regional Hospital, Russell, Kansas.

She was born November 2,1924, in Victoria, Kansas, to Nicholas and Marianna (Dreiling) Brown.

She married Robert G. Jacobs on September 16,1946, at Gorham, Kansas. He died October 29, 2004.

She was a homemaker and attended school at Rock Ridge north of Gorham, Kansas. She worked at the Gorham Train Depot during WW II. Her life was spent taking care of her family and enjoying her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Charles Circle Daughters of Isabella both of Gorham, Kansas.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Jacobs and wife, Karla, Parachute, Co; Leon Jacobs and wife, Debbie, Ellsworth, KS.; four daughters: Judy Corley, Gorham, KS; Marie Hartwick, Ellsworth, KS; Theresa Garnhart and husband, Kevin, Elbert, CO; Jerri Wulff and husband, Mike, Clinton, MN; one sister, Laverna Schulte, Hill City, Ks; one brother-in-law, Berno Jacobs, Gorham, Ks; three sisters-in-law, Bertha Brown, Walker, KS; Arlene Brown, WaKeeney, KS; Genevieve Jacobs, Russell, Ks;

Leona (Landwehr) Schulte

VICTORIA — Leona (Landwehr) Schulte, 81, died Sunday March 23, 2014, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born September 6, 1932, in Ransom, Kansas, to Frank and Elizabeth (Friess) Landwehr. She married Raymond Schulte on December 27, 1960, at Ransom, Kansas. He died July 18, 20ll.

She was a music teacher and taught in Logan, Palco, Russell County schools and Victoria. She retired from teaching in 1994 from Victoria. She also taught private piano for over 60 years.

She was a 1950 graduate of Ransom High School and graduated from Fort Hays State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Music. She has been a church organist at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Walker and St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria since 1976. She was a church organist at Messiah Lutheran Church in Hays from 1983 until 2010.

She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Christian Mothers, both in Walker, Kansas, Sigma Alpha Iota (Women’s Professional Music Fraternity), American Guild of Organists and National Education Association.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas Schulte and wife, Stacy, Hays, KS; Alan Schulte, Victoria, KS; John Schulte, Victoria, KS; one daughter, Marthann Schulte and husband, Todd Zwolensky, Portsmouth, VA; six grandchildren, Brent Schulte, Breanna Schulte-Weber and husband Cory, Lauren Schulte, Joshua Schulte, Elizabeth Zwolensky, Andrew Zwolensky; and two great grandchildren, Rylan Schulte and Paxton Weber; two sisters, Berniece Pfannenstiel, Ransom, KS; Arlene Langer, Ness City, KS; three sisters-in-law, Sue Landwehr, Boring, OR; Josephine Schulte, Hays, KS; Edna Schulte, Hays, KS.

Margaret K. Jackson

Margaret K. Jackson, 93, Phillipsburg, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg.

She was born in Phillips County on October 11, 1920, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Miller) Merklein.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in January 2002.

Survivors include her son, Allan, Phillipsburg; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, with Pastor Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Visitation will be Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with the family greeting friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m.

Phillipsburg resident, Phyllis N. Kennedy, died Sunday, March 9, 2014 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg at the age of 75.  She was born February 14, 1939 in Natoma, KS the daughter of Floyd & Eva (Kirkendall) Beisner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill J. Kennedy in 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Walter “Bud” Kennedy & wife, Cindy of Phillipsburg, Bill Kennedy, Jr. of Topeka, and Ray Kennedy  & wife, Tammy of Phillipsburg; 1 daughter Linda Stokesbury of Long Island, KS; 4 sisters, Joyce Rupp of Phillipsburg, Linda Getty of Rusk, TX, Donna Wodecki of Holyoke, MA and Anita Bubier of Disputanta, VA; 10 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Phillipsburg resident, Leland F. Miller, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, KS at the age of 89.

He was born March 11, 1924 in Phillips County to William & Ella (Dettmer) Miller.

His son, Roger, and grandson, Josh, preceded him in death.
