David A. ‘Dave’ Dreiling

David A. “Dave” Dreiling, 57, Schoenchen, died Tuesday, July 9, 2019 surrounded by family at his home.

He was born September 21, 1961 in Hays, the son of Hubert A. and Clementine M. (Zerr) Dreiling. In 1979, he graduated from Thomas More Prep-Marian High school. On April 20, 1985, he was united in marriage to Margie A. Roth at St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, and they celebrated 34 years of marriage. He was a Facilities Specialist / Welder at Fort Hays State University. His memberships included The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Schoenchen Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166, and Helping Hands of God. Dave enjoyed welding, golfing, mowing, washing vehicles, being outdoors, and cooking. He liked cattle, old tractors, beer, playing pinochle, and loved to spend time with his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife; Margie of the home in Schoenchen, a son; Nicholas D. Dreiling and fiancé Jennifer Rome of Hays, a daughter; Sara A. Zimmerman and husband Kyle of Schoenchen, three granddaughters; Abigail and Ellie Zimmerman and Mindy Dreiling, a brother; Chris Dreiling of Victoria, a sister; Sandy Gottschalk of Hays, his mother-in-law; Jean Roth of Victoria, his brothers and sisters-in-law; Tom Roth of Victoria, Chris Roth and wife Kara of Fort Collins, CO, Joe Roth and wife Christine of Russell, and John Roth and wife Annie of Casper, WY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law; Bernard Roth, and his brother-in-law; Keith Gottschalk.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3:00 pm on Friday, July 12, 2019 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis with Fr. John Schmeidler officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 2:00 pm until service time on Friday, all at the church. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:00 pm, a vigil service will be at 6:30 pm, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm, all on Thursday at the church. Virginia Lee (Brethauer) Scott

Virginia Lee (Brethauer) Scott, 83, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, July 8, 2019 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Virginia was born October 6, 1935 in Bunker Hill, Kansas. She was one of three children born to Raymond and Marie (Heinitz) Brethauer. She grew up in Bunker Hill and Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of 1953.

Virginia was working at the Dream Theater in Russell, when she met Reese Scott. They were united in marriage on June 26, 1953 in Russell. This union was blessed with two children; Brad and Reesa. They made their home in Russell. Reese preceded her in death on August 23, 1982.

Virginia was a Legal Secretary for the Holland & Holland Law Firm for almost 50 years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She also was a Life Member of the Russell V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Russell Elks Lodge. She enjoyed visiting and eating with her friends and family. But her real passion was spending time with her granddaughter and great grandchildren.

Virginia’s surviving family include her son, Brad Scott of Arlington, Texas; daughter, Reesa Waymaster (Rick) of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sisters, Pat Young (Wayne) and Sylvia “Jody” Hopkins (and the late Ronald), all of Salina, Kansas; granddaughter, Anna Crill (Clint); three great grandchildren, Calvin Crill, Adlee Crill and Alexandra Crill, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Lloyd Houdyshell, husband Reese, and great granddaughter, Ada Ruby Crill.

Celebration of Virginia’s Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. Visitation will be held the day of the service starting at 9:30 AM at the Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Great Grandchildren’s Educational Fund. Virginia W. Boxberger

Virginia W. Boxberger, 95, passed away on July 6th, 2019 at Almost Home in Great Bend, Kansas.

Virginia was born on July 26th, 1923, at the family farm near Milberger, Kansas, the daughter of George and Mary K. (Kraft) Steinert. She grew up in the Milberger community.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Boxberger on February 25th, 1945 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parsonage in Russell. From this union, Virginia and Clarence were blessed with two daughters, Beverly and Mary, and son, Tim. She was a homemaker and also worked for USD #407 as a school cook and later ashead cook and supervisor at Simpson Elementary School in Russell. She lived the majority of her life south of Russell in a home she and Clarence built by hand.

Clarence preceded her in death on June 4th, 1977. She found companionship and love again two years later and married Russell K. Ehrlich in November of 1979. He passed away in July of 1985.

She and Clarence were longtime members of St. John Lutheran Church. She was a previous member of Prairie Mates EHU, Russell V.F.W Auxiliary, Russell American Legion Auxiliary, a board member of the Russell Senior Center, and a 4-H Community Leader for Sunflower 4-H Club.

She enjoyed crafting, drawing, sewing, quilting, fishing, playing bingo and cards, and was an accomplished baker and cook. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Surviving family members include daughters, Beverly Miller of Leawood, Kansas, Mary Holliday of Russell, Kansas, and son Tim (Laura) of Great Bend, Kansas; four grandchildren, Shelly Dorrel (Alan), Rebecca Griffen (Jim), Brandon Winter (Crystal), and Matt Langhofer; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica Clevenger, (Joey), Taylor Dorrel, MaKenzie Miller, Dylan Winter, Samuel Winter, Matthew Langhofer, Logan Langhofer, Laura Langhofer and Lacey Langhofer; and sisters Edna Tittel and May Karst.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 32 years Clarence Boxberger, second husband Russell K. Ehrlich, brother Reuben Steinert, sister Rosa Boxberger, grandson Douglas Langhofer, and son-in-law, Steven Miller.

A celebration of Virginia’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 12th, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating. Burial will take place following the service at Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will take place at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 11th, with the family present to greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Memorial has been established with Almost Home, Inc. Harry Russell Fowler

Harry Russell Fowler, age 59, passed away on Tuesday July 9, 2019 at his home in Kensington, KS.

Bradley Jay Slagle

Bradley Jay Slagle, age 63, passed away on July 8, 2019 at the Brooklyn Community Estates in Brooklyn, Iowa. He was born on February 15, 1956 in Ness City, Kansas the son of Floyd and Gertrude (Whipple) Slagle.

Brad was a farmer and rancher. He worked as a truck driver for Texaco and Lane County Implement and worked at Beeler Coop. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Beeler. Brad was a Master Mason in the Anthem Lodge in Scott City. Brad also served a Trustee for the Johnson Township. He married Barbie Josephson on Saturday, December 20, 1975, in Leoti, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Barbie Slagle of Brooklyn, Iowa; mother, Gertrude Slagle of Ness City; a son, Eric (Christa) Slagle of Brooklyn, Iowa; a brother, Brent (Tina) Slagle of Ness City; sister, Diana (Everett) Higdon; and eight grandchildren, Devon, Connor, Julia, Arianna, Nora, Liam, Braden and Harper. He was preceded in death by his father and son, Nathan Slagle.

Funeral service will be on Thursday evening, July 11, 2019, 7:00 P.M., at the United Methodist Church, Ness City, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Buda Cemetery. Visitation will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Buda Cemetery Fence Fund or the United Methodist Church of Beeler.

Marilyn J. Wagner

Marilyn J. Wagner, 86, died Sunday, July 7, 2019 in Dodge City, following a short illness.

She was born November 13, 1932 on the family farm near Offerle, KS. She was the daughter of Cecil and Mabel (Frolich) Offerle, Sr. She graduated from Offerle High School and received her Bachelors Degree from Fort Hays State University. She was a Music Teacher and Librarian for the Bucklin School District for over 38 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a longtime member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bucklin and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dodge City, where she was a Sunday School Superintendent, member of Mary Martha Guild and Ruth Guild, and served on the Holy Cross Board of Education. She was the longtime church organist at Bucklin and Dodge City until her health recently prevented her from playing. She was also a member of the National Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, Sew Sassy Sewers quilting group, and a Board Member of the Community Garden. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed sewing and quilting, doing ceramics with friends, KU Basketball, and loved reading. Her granddaughters were the light of her life.

On August 16, 1959 she married Henry “Bob” Robert Wagner at Kinsley. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2016.

Survivors include: her son, Kent Wagner and wife Casey, Holcomb, Kansas; her daughter, Elaine McDaniel and husband Jeff, Dodge City; 2 sisters, Maurine Jenkins, Greensburg and Dolores Moss and husband Tom, Steele, North Dakota; 5 granddaughters, Shelby Waldman and husband Jerod, Whitney Doan and husband Taylor, Courtney McDaniel, Morgan Wagner and Chelsea Wagner and significant other, Andrew Jost; and two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Waldman, and Baby Doan due in December.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Cecil Offerle, Jr.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Thursday, July 11, 2019 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, with Rev. Randall Jahnke officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Offerle. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

John H. Sanders

Norton resident John H. Sanders passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, KS at the age of 66.

He was born in Dodge City, KS on May 8, 1953, the son of Robert & Jaclynn Cae (Haak) Sanders. On March 24, 2006 he married Brenda Claycamp in Wendover, NV. 

Survivors include his wife, Brenda, of the home in Norton; his father, Robert Sanders of Geneva, NE; sons Mark of Edgar, NE, Brent of Harvard, NE and John of Norton; stepsons Billy, Bobby and B.J. Tallent, all of Norton, Jesse Johnson of Gothenburg, NE and Herbie Johnson of Norton; his daughter, Becky Sanders of Harvard, NE; a brother, Rob Sanders of Hastings, NE; his sisters, Debbie Carbonneau of Chester, NE and Cheryl Price of Lincoln, NE; 24 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. in the Norton Christian Church, Norton, with Pastor Nate Hagen officiating.  Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery, Norton.

Richard A. Townley

Phillipsburg resident Richard A. Townley passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Phillips County Retirement Center, Phillipsburg, at the age of 87.

He was born September 18, 1931 in Glade, Kansas the son of Arthur R. and Neva P. (Hays) Townley.

He was united in marriage to Donna Jean Miller on August 18, 1951 in Phillipsburg.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his son, Rodney of St. Paul, MN; daughter, Linda Schmidt of Albuquerque, NM; and a brother, Bernard Townley of Glade.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m.  Friday, July 12, 2019, in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor James Peterson officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Mr. Townley will lie in state from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and noon until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS  67661.

Denzel Richard Lofgreen

Denzel Richard Lofgreen, age 93, of Norton, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at the Andbe Home, Norton, Kansas. He was born to Burdge David and Ada Blanche (Porter) Lofgreen in Fruita, Colorado on February 22, 1926.

His family moved to Kansas where he attended grade school in Norton. He went to high school in Beaver City, Nebraska, where he graduated in 1943. He served in the Merchant Marines in 1945, and subsequently took over the family farm near the Kansas-Nebraska state line.

Denzel married Ruth Sawyer in 1945. They were married for 74 years and had four children–Denzel Harold, Constance Ann, Craig Sawyer and Jon Charles. He devoted his time and energy to tending the farm and raising cattle. His wife and children assisted with the operation.

He drew great satisfaction from his engagement with community organizations and activities. He spent years serving on the Farm Bureau Board and the Soil Conservation Board. Possessing a passion for preserving the resources God provided, he showed particular interest in soil and water conservation. He also served as Chairman of the 4-H building for 42 years and was selected as Master Farmer of northwest Kansas in 1987. Additionally, he enjoyed being a Chamber of Commerce ambassador for a number of years.

Denzel found great solace and encouragement through his Christian faith. This faith provided him with the strength to encourage and serve others. He served in the Norton Christian Church where he performed as a church elder for many years. Viewing service as an extension of his faith, he especially loved serving as a Shriner with the Prairie Dog Shrine Club.

He loved his family dearly and wished passionately to share with them his vision of life and his ongoing reflections. They will remember with affection his stories and advice—always delivered with a loving desire to transmit memories from his own undertakings and experiences. His conversations with his grandchildren will be cherished as a kind of oral history of the family and their own roots on the farm.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Lofgreen of Norton, Kansas, son Denzel and wife Joyce Lofgreen of Norton, Kansas, Daughter Connie Lofgreen of Omaha, Nebraska, son Dr. Craig Lofgreen of Lee Summit, Missouri, Jon and wife Elaine Lofgreen of Norton, Kansas, 13 grandchildren: Brock Lofgreen, Ty Reynolds, Holly Lofgreen, Matthew Lofgreen, Lyda Reynolds Lohmeier, Regan Lofgreen, Kelly Lofgreen, Blair Reynolds, Seth Lofgreen, Bryan Lofgreen, Ashton Lofgreen, Andrew Lofgreen, and Bryce Lofgreen. He also leaves behind 17 great grandchildren and brother Volney Lofgreen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Victor Lofgreen. He was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Heather Lofgreen and a great grandchild, Jude Lofgreen.

Viewing and visitation will be Friday, July 12, 2019 from 5 PM till 7 PM at the Norton Christian Church in Norton, Kansas. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the Norton Christian Church in Norton, Kansas with Pastor Darel Boston, officiating. Interment will follow at the Norton Cemetery, Norton, Kansas.

Terry ‘Coach’ Masterson

Terry “Coach” Masterson, 79, of Hutchinson, died July 5, 2019, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital-St. Francis, Wichita. He was born September 20, 1939, to Avy and Edna (Riesen) Masterson in Newton.

Terry graduated from Halstead High School, Hutchinson Community College (HCC), Fort Hays State University, and Utah State University with a master’s degree in sociology. After college, he taught and coached at Inman, Halstead, and Ellinwood high schools, before learning that legendary track coach, Nelson Sorem, was retiring from HCC. Terry coached at HCC for 41 seasons, from 1968 to 2009. Before that, he played football and ran track for the HCC Blue Dragons. Track and cross country (that do not measure success in wins and losses), allowed for his induction into the HCC Quarterback Club Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2005, Terry was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. The Terry Masterson Twilight Cross Country Invitational will be held this year on August 30, 2019.

On August 1, 1959, he married Barbara J. Lichter, in Olmitz. She died August 4, 1969. Terry married Nancy Keens on June 4, 1971, in Hutchinson. She survives. He is survived by: wife, Nancy Masterson, Hutchinson; sons, Brad (Lashel) Masterson, Elkhorn, NE, and Cameron (Rochelle) Masterson, Hutchinson; daughters, Kimberley (David Lyon) Masterson, Hutchinson, and Jill (Brent) McBee, Olathe; grandchildren, Taylor and Kristin McBee, Mya Masterson, Brett Masterson, Jacqueline (Christian Murray) Masterson, Josh and McKinsey Mitten; and great-granddaughter, Jazlyn Murray. Terry was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Barbara.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Lennie Maxwell officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, immediately following the memorial service.

Betty Jean Wiziarde

Betty Jean Wiziarde, 90, died July 6, 2019, at The Park in Plano Senior Care, Plano, Texas. She was born May 16, 1929, at Bison, to Henry and Mary (Leinweber) Popp. She married Dean Edwin Wiziarde Jan. 5, 1947, at Larned. He died Feb. 5, 2012.

A resident of Plano, since 2016, coming from Great Bend and Little River, Betty was a homemaker. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, Grace Lutheran Church, Lyons, and a current member of Grace Outreach Center, Plano. Betty was a lifelong artist and art enthusiast and former Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was also active in epilepsy interest groups in McPherson.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Dean Wiziarde and wife Laurie of McPherson, Daniel K. Wiziarde and wife D’Ann of Independence and Pastor Jon M. Wiziarde and wife Sue of Panama City, Panama; one daughter, Ginger Christeson and husband James of Plano; one sister, Geneva Steinert and husband Vernon of Great Bend; and eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, James J. Wiziarde; three brothers, Walter Popp, Elmer Popp and Richard Popp; and three sisters, Alma Lech, Ruby Wells and Virginia Popp.

A celebration reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2019, in the parlor at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Jon M. Wiziarde presiding. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, and 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 11, all at Bryant Funeral Home.

Memorial funds may be made to Betty Jean Wiziarde Expense Fund or Epilepsy Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

William Dean Cole

William Dean Cole, age 90, passed away on July 7, 2019 at his home in Lenexa.

Rosary and Parish Vigil will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Thursday, July 11, 2019, 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, July 12, 2019, 10:00 a.m. followed by burial in the Bazine Cemetery.

Robert Eugene Moorman

Robert Eugene Moorman, 80, was born on February 19, 1939 to Ralph Bradford Moorman and Edith (Shults) Moorman in Nickerson.

He passed on July 5, 2019 in Dodge City.

Bob lived in Nickerson until graduation from high school in 1957. After his graduation he joined the National Guard in Hutchinson. He also attended DeVry Institute in Chicago, Illinois where he learned to become a radio and television repairman. He then joined the United States Army as a radio repairman and served a tour in Germany.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Lyle Moorman.

He is survived by; sister, Linda Chenvanej, Thailand; brother Russell Moorman, Nickerson; six nieces and nephews; eleven great nieces and nephews; two step daughters, Pam Perez and Kathy Murray.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
