Bertha May Yvonne ‘Snooky’ Rorick

Bertha May Yvonne “Snooky” Rorick, 96, died Monday, July 1, 2019 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born February 3, 1923 in Garfield, Kansas the daughter of Glenwood Y. & Edith (Mohn) York.

On March 16, 1941, Snooky married Guy Wesley Rorick. That Sunday afternoon, they went to the home of the Justice of the Peace, and then were married at the Stanton County Courthouse in Johnson, Kansas. This union lasted seventy two years. Throughout their marriage they lived primarily in southwest Kansas and Colorado. Snooky has been a resident of Garden City since 2015. A homemaker, she enjoyed music and reading.

Survivors include four children Marsha Jacquart of LaJunta, Colorado, Sally (Larry) Martin of Garden City, Kansas, Shawn (John) Brack of McCracken, Kansas, and Shane (Audra) Rorick of Ellinwood, Kansas; a sister Pat Wise of Russell, Kansas; nineteen grandchildren; thirty eight great-grandchildren; and ten great great-grandchildren. Snooky is preceded in death by her husband, Guy who died on March 6, 2013. She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son Gary Don Rorick; a brother Gale York; granddaughter Lana Melane Rorick; and son-in-law Robin Jacquart.

A private family service will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to the American Diabetes Association or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Lockwood

Gerald “Jerry” Lockwood passed away on July 1, 2019 at the age of 84. He was born at King Hill, Idaho on February 23, 1935 to George and Ruth (Dobbins) Lockwood.

Jerry was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the cold war (1956 – 1958). He was assigned to both the 3rd and then the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiments.

He was united in marriage to Joan Heskett on December 16, 1960. To this union was born two sons, Kevin and Kenton Lockwood. The couple moved to Wichita, Kansas where Jerry was employed by Motive Parts Warehouse as district manager of sales for most of western Kansas. The family then moved to Great Bend, Kansas in 1971 where Jerry became an owner of Parts, Inc.

Jerry suffered a stroke on May 4, 2006, just a few months before he planned to retire. He loved the outdoors, hunting, photography, and vacationing in the Rockies. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and a founding member of the Kiowa Gun Club of Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife Joan; sons, Kevin and wife Wendy Lockwood, and Kenton and wife Cynthia Lockwood, all of Great Bend; grandchildren whom he loved very much, Thomas and wife Brittany Lockwood, Ashley Lockwood, SPC Ethan Lockwood U.S. Army, Joanna Lockwood; one brother, Robert and wife Joan Lockwood of Denver, Colorado.

Celebration of Life Services will be 2 p.m., Friday July 12, 2019 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, Hoisington, with Rev. Don Fisher presiding. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Wilma Jean Tiede

Wilma Jean Tiede, 82, passed away July 2, 2019, at Home Health & Hospice of Kansas, Wichita.

She was born July 21, 1936, at Wentworth, Missouri, to Fred & Gertrude (Whaley) Wiehe. She married Harold Tiede September 10, 1955 at Wentworth, Missouri. He survives.

Coming from Mt. Vernon, Missouri in 1969, Wilma was a Heizer resident. She was a homemaker that loved to cook and watch soap operas. She enjoyed camping, bowling and especially being with her family.

Survivors include, her husband Harold of the home; five sons, Bruce Tiede and wife Nancy of Erie, Brian Tiede and wife Gayle of Heizer, Charlie Tiede and wife Christie of Hays, Harold Dean Tiede and wife Stacey of Hoisington and Brenton Tiede of Wichita; one step-daughter, Stacey Boy and husband Brian of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Edward, Eldon and Gilbert; and three sisters, Lorene, Helen and Elsimae.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Paden presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North.

Memorials are suggested to the Wilma Tiede Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Daniel ‘Dan’ Schamberger

Daniel Schamberger, age 82, passed away from cancer on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at home in Denver with his family. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Veronica, his three daughters Julie Horowitz, Dana Nickless, and Monika Schamberger; two sons-in-law Bob Horowitz and Mark Nickless; and grandchildren Jake and Nate Horowitz, and Grace and Henry Nickless.

Dan was born in 1936, the youngest of 11 children in the small farming community of St. Peter, Kansas to Raymond and Barbara Schamberger. His father and mother’s family were part of the Volga German immigrants who settled in western Kansas.

Dan went to St. Joseph’s military academy for high school. He attended St. Mary’s of the Plains College in Dodge City for one year, then went to Pittsburgh State University where he received a degree in Education. He was the first in his family to receive a college degree.

After college, he was drafted into the Army and spent two years at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After living in Kansas City, Dan moved to Denver, Colorado where he would settle and raise a family.

He worked at the Sears in Cherry Creek for 15 years, then went into the tire business. He owned an automotive repair shop on east Colfax Ave, Tune Tech Automotive, for 20 years.

Dedicated to charity work, Dan was active in the Kiwanis Club of Aurora for 40 years; involved in his parish at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church for 50 years; and a member at the American Legion Post 1 and the veterans honor society “The Forty and Eight”.

Dan was a proud and supportive father, husband, and grandfather; a hard worker; always ready to laugh and tell a joke; made friends wherever he went; enjoyed jazz, a beer, and good company. He had a good sense of humor and was a positive force in many people’s lives. His presence will be profoundly missed! We love you, a bushel and a peck, we do!!!

A Rosary Service will be held at 7:00pm, Thursday, June 6 at Horan and McConaty, 11150 East Dartmouth Ave at South Parker Rd.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am, Friday, June 7 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, 2250 South Harrison St, Denver.

James Jacob Rohr

James Jacob Rohr, age 60, passed away on July 1, 2019, from injuries due to an automobile accident near WaKeeney.

Funeral service will be on Friday, July 5, 2019, 10:00 a.m. at the Church of God, WaKeeney, Kansas. Burial in the Ransom Cemetery, Ransom, Kansas.

Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home to sign the book, the casket will be closed, on Thursday, July 4, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

James Lee Gabel

James Lee Gabel, 78, passed away on July 1, 2019 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born on June 22, 1941 in Ness City, the son of Isidore and Josephine (Stecklein) Gabel.

Jim was an Electrician. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He was an avid sports fan especially when the Kansas Jayhawks were playing. He also was interested in watching politics on TV. He married Sharon Meyer on Saturday, January 14, 1961, in Dodge City, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include: his daughter, Lori Kisslinger and husband Harold of Ransom; three sons, Scott Gabel of Wichita, Mark Gabel and wife, Becky of Larned, and Brad Gabel and wife Katie of Jenks, OK; a sister, Betty Slaven; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gabel both of Dodge City; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a brother.

Funeral service will be on Friday, July 5, 2019, 10:30 A.M., at Sacred Heart Church, in Ness City. Burial will be in the Bazine Cemetery. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 4th with the family present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Christ Pilot Me Hill.

Michael Lee Jeffery

Michael Lee Jeffery, age 66, of Goodland passed away Monday, July 1, 2019.

Mike was born September 13, 1952 to John and Romona (Swartz) Salyers in Flint, Michigan.

Mike loved spending time with his family, he enjoyed old cars, model cars, nice clean new looking trucks, especially his dump truck.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sister, Brenda Young; and brother, Leavy.

He is survived by his daughter, Danyale (Travis) Yarger of Goodland; son, Kevin (Crystal, aka “Nurse Rachit”) Milke of Goodland; sister, Margo Swartz of Yankton, SD; sister, Kay (Cap) Benthin of Texarkana, TX; nieces, Kathy Ziegler and Theresa Stump; 9 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Friday, July 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. MT at the Goodland Cemetery, North Main Street in Goodland. Visitation will be Thursday, July 4, 2019 from 3 to 6 p.m. MT at Bateman Funeral Home. Irving J. Gotsche

Irving J. Gotsche, 90, passed away July 2, 2019, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. He was born Aug. 23, 1928, at Racine, Wis., to Irving and Ethel (Davis) Gotsche. Irv married Norma Jeanne Horsley Nov. 27, 1954, at Salina.

Coming to Great Bend in 1965, Irv previously lived in Racine, Salina, Ellinwood and Wakeeney. Graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, Irv was employed as a petroleum engineer for Amoco from 1956-1958, Imperial Oil from 1958-1965, and NCRA from 1965 until he retired on Oct. 1, 1988, as drilling superintendent. He was a member of the First Christian Church, VFW Post 3111, KIOGA, API, AME and Golden Belt Community Concert. He served his community as Panther Booster Club past president, Chamber Ambassador, Lake Barton board member, Petroleum Club board member, United Way oilfield chairman, Barton County Historical Society board member, past commander of American Legion Argonne Post 180, CKMC volunteer, youth sports coach, Family Crisis Center past board president and Great Bend Public Library board chairman. He also enjoyed listening to the children of USD 428 read. Irv served in the U.S. Air Force as a B-29 pilot during the Korean War, earning the rank of 1st Lt.

Survivors include, wife, Jeanne Gotsche of the home; three sons, Kurt Gotsche of Wichita, Steve Gotsche and wife Linda of Manhattan, and Eric Gotsche and wife Carol of Great Bend; one daughter, Pam Gabel of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Ali Gabel, Meghan Gabel, Brad Gabel, Adam Gotsche and wife Kelsey, and Ryan Gotsche; and one great granddaughter, Collins Gotsche. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Gill; and a son-in-law, Chip Gabel.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2019 at First Christian Church with Pastor Sue Bishop presiding. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. A private family inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North at a later date. Robert Eugene Farr Sr.

Robert Eugene Farr Sr., age 75, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2019 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays.

He was born on September 13, 1943, in Garden City, the son of Paul Thomas and Wanetta Marie Rowton Farr. A lifetime resident of Scott City, he worked in construction and before retirement for the City of Scott City maintenance department.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Scott City. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in the Kansas National Guard.

On June 10, 2000 he married Debra May Wright in Scott City, Kansas. She survives.

Farr of Scott City, Kansas, Nine Children – Russell Farr of Dighton, Kansas, Robert Farr Jr. of St. George, Utah, Michelle Ruth of Healy, Kansas, Nicol & Paul Belford of Wamego, Kansas, Ginni Rose of Leoti, Kansas, Bobby Keith Farr of Pittsburg, Kansas, Keith Wayne Farr of Scott City, Kansas, Steven R. Ralph Francis Kenworthy

Ralph Francis Kenworthy, 84, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away June 30 in Newton, Kansas.

Mr. Kenworthy was born August 3rd, 1934 to Leroy and Minnie (Holder) Kenworthy in Marshall County and was a graduate of Frankfort High School in 1955.

He was the husband of Mary Lou (Warren) Kenworthy. They were united in marriage on November 24, 1955 at the First Presbyterian Church in Frankfort, Kansas.

Mr. Kenworthy graduated from Kansas State with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education and also earned his Master’s degree at Fort Hays State College in School Administration.

Ralph was a vocational agricultural teacher at both Frankfort High School and Morland Rural High School. He later served as the principal of Ransom High School from 1966 to 1976 and also the Superintendent and Elementary Principal of Ransom School District for eighteen years.

He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, Kansas.

Ralph is survived by his bride of 63 years, Mary Lou of Newton, Kansas; two sons, James (Linda) Kenworthy of Manhattan, Kansas, and Jeffry of Humble, Texas; three daughters, Joyce (Michael) Eurit of Russell, Kansas, Jo (James) Hardy of Wichita and Jean (Bart) Balthazor of Valley Center, Kansas; brother Bob Kenworthy of Frankfort, Kansas and sister Lorna Craft of Blue Rapids, Kansas; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four brothers.

Visitation will be held at Carlson’s Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home in Manhattan on Friday, July 5th between the hours of 9 AM and 6 PM, and also at the First Presbyterian Church in Frankfort, Kansas on Saturday, July 6th at 9 AM. Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 6th at the First Presbyterian Church, Frankfort, Kansas with interment to follow at the Frankfort Cemetery.

Bill J. Cunningham

Bill J. Cunningham, 86, WaKeeney, died Saturday, June 8, 2019 in WaKeeney, Kansas. He was born March 21, 1933 in rural Canton, Kansas to Ray and Myrtle (Bacon) Cunningham and attended grade school in Canton, McPherson and Bennington, KS. Following school he went directly to work at his Aunt & Uncle’s farm in Bennington for several years before moving to WaKeeney where he worked with his brother –in-law Clayton Brown doing construction. He then took a job driving a water truck until he entered the Army in January 1956. He was stationed at Fort Richardson, United States Army in Anchorage, Alaska, where he was part of the cross country ski patrol.

On December 27, 1957 in Lawton, OK he married the love of his life Norma Lee Berschauer. They renewed their wedding vows in the presence of their children and grandchildren 55 years later on December 27, 2012. His beloved wife preceded him in death on November 8, 2015.

Bill had various jobs and trades that he learned on his own. These included operating heavy equipment, welding, farming and doing mechanic work. He was a hard worker and meticulous for anyone who gave him the opportunity. He had great pride in his accomplishments which included helping build Interstate 70, Milford Reservoir (the largest man-made lake in Kansas) and Cedar Bluff Reservoir. He enjoyed his friends while working at Malsom Terracing Co. and The Allied Corp. After retirement he kept busy helping his son at TJ’s Alignment in any way he could and delivered cars as needed.

Bill loved working with Norma in their huge vegetable garden and chatting with his friends at the WaKeeney Eagles Lodge. He had a great sense of humor and was always ready to share a good story. After retirement he traveled with his family on various cruises and vacations. In his later years he delighted in joking with his sister Dee, teasing his grandchildren and watching his grand-dog Bandi. He truly enjoyed wearing his favorite hat while driving a daily route around WaKeeney in his red Dodge pickup.

Survivors include three sons; Rick Cunningham and wife Nancy (Durler), Ellis, KS, Terry Cunningham and his dog Axel, WaKeeney, KS, and William Cunningham and wife Dawn (Dubach) Ellis, KS, two daughters; Becky Oller and husband Paul, WaKeeney, KS and Janet Durheim and husband Steve, Ellis, KS, sister; Verla Dee Robinson, WaKeeney, KS, Ten grandchildren; Jena Stunkel (Pfannenstiel) and husband David, Briana Towner (Oller) and husband Michael, Travis Elder, Sara Nations (Cunningham) and husband Chris, Eric Cunningham and wife Sarah, Matt Cunningham, Jamie Durheim, Emily Hiss (Durheim) and husband Michael, Derek Kvasnicka, and Sierra Cunningham, Six great-grandchildren; Kyliee Towner, Lola Stunkel, Ruby Stunkel, Oliver Hiss, Shelbie Towner and Rose Cunningham.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Richard (Dick) Cunningham, Eldon Cunningham, and Sam Cunningham, sisters; Betty (Sis) Brown and Peg Sinning, grandson; Jeffrey Cunningham.

Graveside service will be held Friday July 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney, KS.
