Dale L. Soderlund

Dale L. Soderlund was born January 20, 1931 in Kanona, KS to Frank and Doretta (Butler) Soderlund. He passed away June 23, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society of Decatur County, at the age of 88.

Dale attended grade school in Kanona. He married Lenora Ruth Wilkening on August 7, 1949 at the Rural Lutheran Church. He grew up on a farm and continued to farm and raise cattle until he retired in 2005. Dale was also an auctioneer. He was a member of JC’s, Prairie Chapel Methodist Church and 4-H. Dale was a hard worker and enjoyed working with his farming tenants. He loved rodeos, calf roping, fishing, and slot machines, but most of all he loved being around kids.

Dale had four goals in life: 1. For his wife to have a good home 2. For his kids to have a good education because he didn’t have one 3. He wanted to be a successful and self-sufficient farmer/rancher 4. He wanted to drive a new Cadillac.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lenora; son, Larry Soderlund in 1979 and brothers: Alfred, Gary, Wayne, and Francis Soderlund.

He is survived by his son, Steve Soderlund and wife Jan of Parker, CO; sisters: Delores Depperschmidt of Oberlin, KS and Doreen Sabin of Austin, TX; granddaughter, Kellie McGill and husband Avery; grandson, Michael Soderlund; great grandsons, Kaden and Kai; family friends, Doug and Pat Brown and their daughter Skyler and extended family and friends.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 1, 2019 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin. Inurnment at Oberlin Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dale L. Soderlund Memorial Fund.

Ginger Rose Adams

Ginger Rose Adams passed away on June 17, 2019, at her home in Russell at the age of 57. She was born February 1, 1962 in Plainville, KS to Paul and Elizabeth Ann (Post) Lowry. Ginger was a 1980 graduate of Palco High School.

Ginger enjoyed gardening and animals, but what she enjoyed most was people. She never knew a stranger and loved visiting with her friends. She especially loved time spent with her grandkids.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Clinton Lee and significant other Sara Wallgren of Plainville, and Derek Elliott of Russell; her father Paul Lowry of Palco; brothers, Don (Anita) Lowry of Webster and John (Kelly) Lowry of Plainville; sisters, Patty (Mike) Rudman of Palco, Kristie (Roy) Williams of Plainville, Angela Berens of Hays, and Carol Coates of Plainville; and two grandchildren, Jackson Bo Lee and Carson Lee Rankin.

She is preceded in death by her mother Elizabeth Ann Lowry.

A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the funeral home in Plainville. Memorials are suggested to the Ginger Adams Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd, Plainville, KS 67663.

Carrie ‘Ruth’ Jones

Former Brewster resident, Carrie “Ruth” Jones, 93, passed away April 10, 2019 at Meadow View Assisted Living in Greeley, Colorado.  She was born July 20, 1925 in Goodland, KS to Leslie and Rose (Miller) McClelland.  Ruth and her husband Duane were married on June 21, 1946 in Colby, KS.  They celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2016.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Duane, parents, her brothers George, Bob and Jim McClelland, and a sister Marie Edwards.

Ruth has 2 daughters, Linda (Larry) Hoffner and Monn Rose (Mike) Blank, four grandsons; Bradley Hoffner, Eric Hoffner, Aaron Blank and Caleb Blank, as well as nine great grandchildren.

Ruth grew up loving music.  She played the piano, clarinet, violin and saxophone.  Her family traveled and played at different venues when she was growing up.  She was active in 4-H and raised Holstein cattle.

She attended cosmetology school in Denver and had shops in both Goodland and Brewster.

Ruth and Duane lived many years in Brewster, KS.  She was a Girl Scout and a 4-H Leader for over 28 years.  She was active in the Brewster Senior Center, Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and other activities.

A memorial graveside service for Ruth will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:00 AM MT at the Goodland Cemetery in Goodland, KS with Pastor Mike Baughn officiating.  There will be lunch after the service. 

Memorial contributions are designated to the Brewster Senior Center and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Boyd T. Reifschneider

Boyd T. Reifschneider, 93, shuffled off his mortal coil on 20 December, 2018 in Scottsdale Arizona.

He was born 25 March, 1925 in Dighton, Kansas to farmers Edward and Lettie (Thomas) Reifschneider.

After graduating from Dighton High School, Boyd enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably on the mine sweeper USS Toucan in the South Pacific during World War II. Returning home, Boyd started a family and worked on the farm until, deciding he did not want to drive a tractor for the rest of his life, Boyd and his family moved to Scottsdale in 1963 where he studied electronics and eventually became employed in the cable television industry.

After retiring, he volunteered at the Crisis Nursery and enjoyed golf, making jewelry, and relaxing at his mountain home. He was a life time member of the American Legion, post 190.

Boyd is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elinor, children Greg (Carmen), Connie (Jerry), Cathy (Tom), and Galen (Claudine), grandchildren Tom, Patricia, Melissa (Daniel), Michael, and Mitchell, and great grandchildren Nadia, Brennan, Cooper, Natasha, and Daniel, as well as an aunt, sister-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2019 at the Dighton Cemetery in Dighton, Kansas at 11:00 A.M. with military honors provided by the United States navy.

Donations in Boyd’s name may be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Leland E. Baetz, 91, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Smith County Health and Rehab, Smith Center, KS.

Arrangements are pending with All Faiths Funeral Chapel.

Terry Lee Perez

Terry Lee Perez, 64, passed away June 22, 2019 in Larned, KS.

He was born January 10, 1955 in Kinsley, the son of Clemente Rincon and Lucia M. Mariche Perez. A lifetime area resident, he was a certified welder for Doonan Trailer in Great Bend, Kansas. He graduated from Kinsley High School in 1972. He lived in Pratt from 1986 to 1999 where he ran Pratt County Achievement place for 13 years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. He was an avid Chiefs fan, softball player and loved playing all sports. He loved spending time with family, his children and grandchildren and was a devoted and loving foster parent for 40 plus years.

On November 30, 1974, he married Marilyn Sue Reed in Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, T.J. (Ally) Perez, Hutchinson, Charlie (Tamara) Perez, Larned, Brandon Perez (Emily Herrman), Pittsburg, Treg (Vanessa) Fletcher, Wichita; four daughters, Crystal Naugle, April Perez and Miesha Perez, Sydnie Morrow (Josh Bernal), all of Larned; four brothers, Felix Perez, Hutchinson, Raymond (Cindy) Perez, Anthony (Darla) Perez, both of Larned, Manuel (Marilyn) Perez, Salina; two sisters, Eleanor (Leon) Sanders, Larned, Linda (Frank) Garcia, Wichita; nine grandchildren, Elijah Perez, Aiden, Alissa and Adam O’Crotty, Nevaeh Perez, Bentley and Rowan Bernal, Hanna and Maddox Fletcher.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Guadalupe, Pete, Francisco and John Perez and two sisters, Trinadad Ruiz and Jane Bronson.

Rosary and vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Cremation will take place following the service and no burial at this time.

James R. ‘Jim’ Lyons

James R. “Jim” Lyons, age 72, passed away on Friday June 21, 2019 at the Sunporch of Smith County. He was born May 15, 1947 in Granite City, IL to Arvis and Mary Lyons.

Jim as he preferred to be called graduated from high school in Santa Paula, CA. Jim was unable to work due to an injury he sustained at the age of 6 months from a car accident which left him with a brain injury and cerebral palsy.

Jim lived inn Gaylord for approx. 30 years. He enjoyed visiting residents of Gaylord at the local café, grocery store and bank. He faithfully attended every service in the third row on the organ side of the Gaylord Church of the Nazarene where he was a member.

He married Kathy Gilmore from Osborne. She passed away in 2001 at the Prairie Haven Nursing Home in Kensington. Jim loved his birds and enjoyed caring for them. Prior to his nursing home admission, he received in home care from Jennifer Elson and Kim Ifland.

He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and cherished many cardinals’ souvenirs. Jim became a domino champion at the nursing home while residing there.

Jim is survived by his sister Wanda Sayres of Springdale, AR; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arvis & Mary; wife Kathy; brothers Don, Bob & David.

Olive L. Arnold

Olive L. Arnold, 99, of Clayton, died Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Good Samaritan in Oberlin. She was born September 10, 1919, in Clayton, KS, to Blakey and Lulu “Blanche” (Reid) Rule. She graduated from Clayton High School and on March 27, 1949, she married Francis Arnold. Olive was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clayton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Vera Hubbard and Frances Reiff, brother John Rule, husband Francis Arnold, sons, Robert Martin and James Arnold, Sr. and grandson, James Arnold, Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Arnold of Clayton, Janet Johnson & husband Terrence of Anchorage, AK, and Dianna Ayles of Colorado Springs, CO; eight grandchildren, Michelle Higgins, Amber Reichardt, Andrea Dixon, Lily Johnson, Nicole Johnson, Julia Ayles, Michael Ayles II and Kalynn Baldwin; 13 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Viewing will be 1-2:00 pm, Tuesday, June 25, 2019 followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm, at the United Methodist Church in Clayton. Burial at Clayton Cemetery will take place immediately after the funeral. A reception will be at the church following the burial. Hugh Gresty, Jr.

Hugh Gresty, Jr., age 91, passed away at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas on Friday, June 21, 2019. He was born on April 17, 1928 in Coldwater, Kansas, the son of Hugh and Anna Lenz Gresty. A lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas, he was a Farmer and Cattleman.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas and was a US Army Veteran.

On April 28, 1956 he married Doris A. Bilson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Scott City, Kansas. She passed away on December 8, 1996 in Wichita, Kansas.

Survivors include his Four Daughters – Charlotte Gresty of Scott City, Kansas, Linda & Mike Heili of Garden City, Kansas, Jeanie & Casey Vetter o fScott City, Kansas, Kari & Ron Youvon of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Johnny Gresty of Goodland, Kansas, Four Grandchildren, Nine Great Grandchildren and One Great Great Grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife and Four Sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas at a later date.
