Floyd M. Dirks

Floyd M. Dirks, age 88, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on July 18, 1930 in Durham, Kansas, the son of Albert & Marie Unruh Dirks. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1942 moving from Hillsboro, Kansas, he was a farmer.

He was a member of the Pence Community Church in Pence, Kansas.

On September 23, 1951 he married Vivian Unruh at the Scott Mennonite Church in Pence, Kansas. She survives.

Survivors Include his Wife – Vivian Dirks of Scott City, Kansas, One Son – Rick & LaNora Dirks of Scott City, Kansas, One Daughter – Rhonda & John Pyles of Claremore, Oklahoma, One Sister – Willetta Payne of Lakin, Kansas, Three Grandsons – Jason & Emma Dirks of Woodward, Oklahoma, Jeremy & Brooke Dirks of Johnston, Iowa, Aaron & Megan Dirks of Scott City, Kansas and Twelve Great Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Six Brothers and Four Sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at the Pence Community Church in Pence, Kansas with Jason Dirks & Don Williams presiding.

Interment will be in the Pence Cemetery in Pence, Kansas.

Memorials can be given to the Pence Community Church in care of Price & Sons Funeral Homes.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas.

Bill Wright

Bill Wright, 89, lifelong Sherman County farmer, passed away on June 14, 2019 in Lone Tree, Colorado after a short illness.

Bill was born on October 26, 1929 in Goodland, Kansas to Raymond and Ida Wright. Bill’s grandparents homesteaded and the family farmed north of Kanorado for over 120 years. Bill married Dorothy Nagel in 1947, and to this union four children; Janet, Christine, Cynthia and Douglas were born. In 1976, Bill and Mildred “Millie” Rasure were married and shared a “blended” family, adding Kevin and Randy.

Bill loved farming, watching his kids play sports and flying airplanes. He was very active in the Kanorado and Goodland communities, serving on various boards and winning numerous farming awards. Bill was especially involved in the sugar beet industry, raising beets for over 20 years. Bill semi-retired from farming in 2005, and he and Millie moved to their home in Goodland. In 2017, Bill moved to Wheat Ridge Acres, and very much enjoyed his new extended family there.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ida, infant sister Katherine and sisters Marjorie Pizel and Joyce Burd, wife Millie, and a son-in-law George (Cynthia) Logan.

He is survived by a brother, Jack (Connie) Wright of La Crescenta, CA, his children Janet (Russ) Sammons of Littleton, CO, Chris (Joe) Blackwell of Palmer Lake, CO, Cynthia Logan of Vorhees, NJ and Doug (Melanie) Wright of Las Vegas, NV, two step children Kevin (Kim) Rasure of Goodland, KS and Randy Rasure of Lake Arial, Pennsylvania. Included in this group is Christie Rasure, considered a 4th sister and an invaluable asset in Bill’s journey through his ‘seasoned citizen’ years. Bill is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren of his own, as well as 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren from his ‘blended’ family, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 11:30 AM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland with Pastor Gordon Pettibone officiating. Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 9:30 AM MT at the Kanorado Cemetery in Kanorado, KS.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM MT at Koons-Russell Funeral Home in Goodland.

Gail Ellen Keller

Gail Ellen Keller, age 60, passed away June 14, 2019, at her home. Gail was born July 18, 1958 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of George M. and Carolyn Mae (Crouch) Huber.

Gail, a resident of Great Bend since 2001, coming from Kansas City, Mo., devoted her life to caring for others, being employed by Cherry Village as a CNA and CMA, and later working privately as an in home care giver. She held a special place in her heart for animals, especially her two cats.

Survivors include her mother, Carolyn Mae Huber; and two brothers, Thomas C. Keller and wife Diane of Liberty, Mo., and James K. Keller and companion Robin F. Murphy of Liberty, Mo. She was preceded in death by her father, George M. Huber.

Services are pending with Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, Kan.

Basil Jantz

Basil Jantz, 91, passed away June 14, 2019 at Salina Regional Health Center, in Salina, Kansas. She was born November 13, 1927, in Poynor, Missouri to H.C. (Cordrey) and Maudie (Anglin) Spires.

A Salina resident since 2000 coming from Hoisington, Basil was a member of the Hoisington Bible Church and resided at McCall Manor, Salina.

Survivors include: sons: Lloyd Pinon (JoLana) Topeka, KS, Steve Griffin (Kayla) Salina, KS; daughters: Becky Townsley (Gary) of Minneapolis, MN, Jo Plinsky (Don) of Wichita, KS, Bonny Wohlcke (Chip) of Arvada, CO, Belva Prins (Dave) of Waseca, MN; siblings, Shirley Juby, Clayton Spires, and William “Bill” Spires; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Basil was preceded in death by her husbands, Lloyd E. Pinon, Jess Griffin and Vernon Jantz. Also preceded in death by her siblings Brice Spires, Nadine Beeman, Melba Maggard, Berniece Whitaker, Twilla Brack, and LaVerne Spires.

Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2019 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Celebration of Basil’s life services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Hoisington Bible Church, with Pastor Gary Clark officiating. Interment will follow at the Hoisington Cemetery.

Leonard Anthony Kashka

Longtime Goodland resident Leonard Anthony Kashka, Sr., 94, passed away on June 12, 2019 at his home in Goodland.

Leonard was born on September 30, 1924 in Atwood, KS to Victor and Victoria (Studer) Kashka. He was one of seven children. He grew up in Atwood and graduated from Atwood High School in 1942.

Leonard served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. On November 11, 1946, he married Antoinette Marie Musalek at the Catholic Church in Goodland. To this union, three children, Threse, Toni and Leonard Jr., were born.

Leonard enjoyed playing cards and dominos, driving around in the country looking at the crops, calling Bingo at Wheatridge, and visiting with friends and family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Antoinette, one step brother, two step sisters and one great granddaughter.

He is survived by his three children; Threse (Joe) Armstrong, Toni (Roy) Cummings and Leonard (Ramona) Kashka, Jr., all of Goodland. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and six step great grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin Kashka of Green River, AZ, LeRoy (Judy) Kashka of Kansas City, MO, and one sister Marlene Webster of McCook, NE, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 10:30 AM MT at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Goodland with Father Norbert Dlabal officiating. Burial followed in the Goodland Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Sunday, June 16, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM MT at the Church with a Parish Rosary and Vigil service at 6:00 PM MT.

Mary Amanda Herman

Mary Amanda Herman, 100, of Overbrook, Kansas, and former Russell resident, died on Monday, June 10, 2019, at the Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook.

Mary was born on December 29, 1918, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude May (Poggenpohl) Boarts. She grew up and attended school in Iowa City Public Schools. She lived in California, Las Vegas, Nevada, and moved to the Russell County area in 1944. She was united in marriage to Rudolph A. “Rudy” Herman on April 17, 1942 in Las Vegas. From this union Mary and Rudy were blessed with two sons Rudolph James and Gary Lee Herman.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed being a wife and mother and taking care of her family. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, fishing and bingo. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, B.P.O. Elks and American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving family include her son Gary L. Herman of Topeka, Kansas, 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and 2 step-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rudy, son Rudolph James Herman, 4 brothers Leo”Bud”, Clarence, Joseph “Dody”, and Frank “Babe” Boarts; 3 sisters Ruth Slade, Edna Hess and Loretta Boarts.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date and cremation has been selected by the family. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the arrangements.

Bobby E. Brillhart

Downs — Bobby E. Brillhart, 81, passed away June 13, 2019 in Beloit.  He was born January 17, 1938 in Union Town, KS, the son of Maudie (Snyder) and Jake Brillhart.

He was a retired teacher.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla; children, Karen Thomas (Kevin) of Pratt, Dennis Brillhart (Amanda) of Tulsa, Douglas Brillhart (Christina) of Derby, Darcy Brillhart (Melissa) of Douglasville GA, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and a sister, Marie Stevenson of Lamoni, IA.

Funeral services will be at the First Christian Church, Downs on Monday June 17, 2019 at 10:00am.

Visitation will be Sunday June 16, 2019 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at the church.

Bobby E. Brillhart, 81, passed away June 13, 2019 in Beloit. He was born January 17, 1938 in Union Town, KS, the son of Maudie (Snyder) and Jake Brillhart.

He was a retired teacher.

Dorothy Darlene (Shinn) Sleezer Swalley

Dorothy Darlene (Shinn) Sleezer Swalley, 86, died June 12, 2019, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born June 8, 1933, in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Bennie R. and Opal Neoma (Hogg) Shinn.

Darlene attended grade school in Silica and Lindsborg. She started High School in Wichita but then graduated from Claflin High School in 1950. She then went on to graduate from Brown-Mackie School of Business and also completed several business courses from Barton County Community College.

She married Charles Merle Sleezer and they later divorced. She then married Fred Swalley Jr., on March 20, 1953, in Bentonville, Arkansas. He survives. They started their married life in Delaware, Oklahoma, moving later to Harper, Kansas, and finally to Claflin where they have resided for the last 57 years.

Darlene was a smart, methodical, and driven individual. She was the bookkeeper and part owner of Fry’s Tank Service. From 1981 to 1988 she owned the Tall Shop in both Great Bend and Garden City and later worked as a secretary for the Family Recovery Center at Clara Barton Hospital and then Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

Darlene was an avid reader and a devoted grandmother who loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred Swalley, Jr. ; four sons, Rick Sleezer and wife Carolyn of Morrison, Colorado; Bruce Swalley of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Tracy Swalley and wife Cathy of Overland Park, and Brad Swalley of Great Bend; grandchildren, Dallas Sleezer of Lochbuie, Colorado, Gwen Cole and husband Kenny of Hoisington, Sydney Swalley of Daytona, Florida, Tyler Swalley and wife Jessica of Wichita, Olivia Swalley and fiancé Grant Ellis of Overland Park, Jake Swalley of Miami, Florida, Morgan Dodds and husband Greg of Sumter, South Carolina, McKenna Swalley and fiancé Chase Waggoner of Wichita; two step grandchildren, Gavin Brivik of Los Angeles, California and Alex Brivik of Kansas City, Missouri, Jr. Hamby of Brown Valley, California, Robert Hamby and family of San Angelo, Texas, Cynthia Kuntz and family of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carrie Roe and family of Morrison, Colorado, Patricia Jones & family of Peyton, Colorado; and 8 great grandchildren, Royce, Dallas, Braeden, Alexander, Greyson, Juaquin, Joelysia, and Jaylia; and a special cousin, JoyLee Warner and husband Gary of Holyrood.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bennie Shinn, mother, Opal Thompson, step father, R.T. “Bob” Thompson, and a brother, Rev. Ross Shinn.

Odelia Haselhorst

Odelia Haselhorst, 97, longtime resident of Hays, died Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Mapleton Care Center in Lakewood, Colorado.

She was born July 8, 1921 in Schoenchen, the daughter of Carl and Mary (Depperschmidt) Werth. On February 11, 1947 she was united in marriage to Raymond H. “Ray” Haselhorst. They celebrated 54 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 15, 2001. Odelia was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, especially in her later years. One of the highlights of her travels was participating in the baths and rosary procession at the Lourdes Shrine in France. She enjoyed watching the Colorado Rockies baseball games. Odelia was a lovely and kind woman who most importantly, enjoyed life and truly looked forward to every day.

Survivors include a daughter; Cheryl Kessler (Jerry Davis) of Denver, CO, two daughters-in-law; Chrysanne Haselhorst of Allen and Karen Clutter of Colorado Springs, CO, three grandsons; Steve Haselhorst of Kansas City, MO, Shane Haselhorst (Kathleen) of Kinsley and John Kessler II of Fleming Island, FL, two granddaughters; Shara Haselhorst of Hays and Christina Kessler Gutmann (Thorsten) of Herrenberg, Germany, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Raymond, two sons; Steve Haselhorst and Charles Haselhorst, a daughter; Janet Buddemeyer, two sons-in-law; John Kessler and Mark Buddemeyer, four brothers; Nick Werth (Theresa), Frank Werth (Minnie), Paul Werth (Emmy), and Henry Werth, and five sisters; Julia Linenberger (Bob), Tillie Whitehurst (Lynn), Tina Brannen (Al), Mary Legge (Ralph), and Helen Siers (Shirley).

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, June 17, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Fred Gatschet officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Anthony Cemetery, Schoenchen. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:15 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
