Robert D. Lauber

Robert D. Lauber, 70, passed away May 31, 2019 at Diversicare in Larned.

He was born February 19, 1949, the son of Clinton Harold and Iona Bethine Norris Lauber.

He served in the United States Air Force and later worked as at Sublette CO OP and as a crop advisor for Lewis CO OP. He was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include; his mother, Iona Lauber, Larned; two sisters, Pammie Shank, Larned, Tammie McClaren, Kinsley; a brother, David Lauber, Cheney, WA.

He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Sandra Davis; and one brother, and Terry Lauber.

Larry Lane Lewis

Larry Lane Lewis, 77, of Colby, died Sunday, May 26, 2019 at Citizens Health in Colby, Kansas. He was surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 3, 1941, in Hoxie, KS, to Peary and Maxine (Rosenkrans) Lewis. He graduated from Hoxie High School in 1959, where he participated in basketball, football and track. Larry served in the United States Army. On August 24, 1963, he married Agnes Detjen, in Hoxie. To this union, a son Steven and a daughter Sheri was born. Larry was a meat cutter, working at Larry’s IGA, Warren’s IGA and then Dillon’s. He was a fan of Elvis and the Denver Broncos. Larry became an avid bird watcher, his favorite being Purple Martins and also loved to feed the Blue Jays peanuts in his driveway. Larry’s hobbies included fishing, camping, gardening, garage sales and metal detecting. Plus hanging out with his dachshund buddies “Abby” and “Jax”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peary and Maxine; brothers, William “Sonny” Lewis and James Lewis; sister-in-law Arleta Detjen and his brother-in-law Elmer Rall.

He is survived by his wife Agnes; children, Steven Lewis and Sheri Staab; grandsons, Kaden (Callie) and Kyler Staab, all of Colby; sister Linda Lewis, of Fort Worth TX; sisters-in-law, Rose Lewis, of Columbia, SC Lois Lewis, of Dublia TX and Elta Rall, of Hoxie KS and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby. Funeral Service is 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with burial in Beulah Cemetery. Phyllis Arlene Amend

Phyllis Arlene Amend, 71, passed away June 1, 2019 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born January 6, 1948 in Dodge City, Kansas to Alfred William and Frieda Viola Halling Yust.

Phyllis was a lifetime resident of the area, living at Burdett, Kansas and moving with the family to Larned, Kansas in 1953 where she started school. She graduated from Larned High School and attended a computer school in Wichita.

She worked as a nurse’s aide and at Cessna in Hutchinson, Kansas prior to working most of her life at Larned State Hospital as an administrative assistant, having worked in Data Processing, the Post Office and Laboratory.

She married William Harding on February 14, 1975, they later divorced. On March 24, 2007 she married Donald Amend.

Phyllis was a faithful member to the Church of the Nazarene in Larned, Kansas where she taught Sunday school classes. She greatly enjoyed the children.

After her retirement from Larned State Hospital, she and Don were able to do some traveling which she enjoyed. She also greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and putting together jigsaw puzzles.

She was preceded in death by; her parents, a son, Matthew James Harding; a sister, Donna Thompson and brother-in-law, Melvin Bowlus.

She is survived by; her husband, Donald Amend; a son, Jason (Sarah) Harding, Hutchinson, Kansas; sisters, Carol Bowlus and Virginia (Wayne) Brownlee, Larned, Kansas; brother, Wayne (Laura) Yust, North Branch, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Jim Thompson; step-daughter, Lori (Russell, Jr.) Sutton, Lyons, Kansas; step-son, Jody Amend, Shidler, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Ethan, Katelyn, Trenton, Dakota, Chase and Brandi; and great grandchildren: Katara and Damien, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas with Rev. Daryl Riffel presiding. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Robert E. Hammersmith

Robert E. Hammersmith, age 89, of Gorham, Kansas, died Friday, May 17, 2019, at Wesley Medical Center Wichita, Kansas.

He was born at Gorham to Celestine and Clara Helen (Bieker) Hammersmith.

Robert was a finish carpenter for over 40 years and spent his lifetime in the Gorham area. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was a was a 1952 graduate of Gorham High School, a member of the Russell V.F.W. Post No. 6240 and Hays American Legion, and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Gorham, Kansas. Robert was a former Fire Chief of the Gorham Fire District, worked for Gorham Telephone Company and Hammersmith Electric.

Survivors include one brother, Joe Hammersmith, Gorham, KS; three sister, Doreen Smith and husband, Mike, Centennial, CO; Betty Froelich, Cimarron, KS; Barb Haggerty, Lawrence, KS; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by, his parents.

Services are at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, Kansas 67601 with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post No. 9076.

A private family Inurnment will be at the Winterset Cemetery south of Gorham, Kansas.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.

Gayla Jo Amend

Gayla Jo Amend, 55, teacher, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

Memorial Service, 11 a.m., Saturday, June 1, at Hyde Elementary School (please use north entrance).

Gayla was currently a special education teacher at Hyde Elementary School. She was with USD 259 for the past 25 years, and considered all her students her adopted children. She was also an advocate for animal rescue.

Preceded in death by her father, Gene Clapp.

Survivors: husband, Daniel “Ty” Amend; sons, Adam Amend of Ft. Worth, TX, Brandon Amend of Wichita; mother, Virginia Clapp of Hays; sisters, Lanette (Kevin) Shaffer of Ft. Morgan, CO, Jenny (Toby) Prine of Hays; nieces, Lexi (Nathan) Roger, Emily Prine; nephews, Tyler Shaffer and Andrew Prine, along with numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; her dogs, Scooby and Tater.

Steve D. Ochs

Steve D. Ochs, 54, passed away May 29, 2019 in Jetmore.

He was born November 4, 1964 in Dodge City, the son of Loren E. and Beverly Kay Fagen Ochs. A lifetime area resident, he was a devoted cattleman and rancher, but most importantly he was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather.

He was of the Christian faith and attended Grace Community Church, Dodge City. He was a member of Kansas Livestock Association and was a proud supporter of the FFA and 4-H youth.

On July 28, 1990, he married Stephanie Schawe in Spearville. She survives.

Other survivors include: parents, Loren and Kay Ochs, Jetmore; son, Garrett (Kelsey) Ochs, Jetmore; two daughters, Janae (Ryan) Falconer and Taylor (Caleb) Sheets, both of Jetmore; brother, Brad (Penny) Ochs, Jetmore; sister, Carol (Jeff) Jarnagin, Holcomb; grandson, Ty Falconer and mother-in-law, Anne Schawe, Spearville.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Community Church, Dodge City, with Rev. Kirk Larson presiding. Family requests casual dress. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Memorials may be sent to the Grandchildren’s school fund in care of Beckwith Funeral Home, Box 663 Jetmore, KS 67854.

Janice Ilo Baczkowski

Janice Ilo Baczkowski, 65, passed away on May 28, 2019 at her home in Dighton, Kansas. She was born on January 26, 1954 in Ransom, Kansas to Michael and Margaret (Paul) Curtis.

Janice was the Lane County Register of Deeds since 2008. She married Theophile A. Baczkowski on Saturday, April 29th, 1972, in Ness City.

Survivors include her husband, Theophile A. Baczkowski; a son, Theophile J. Baczkowski and fiancé Brittany Rains; a daughter, Tamatha (Michael) Thomas all of Dighton; her brother, Jim Curtis of Ness City; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Rosary will be on Friday, May 31, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home at 7:00 P.M. Funeral service will be on Saturday, June 1, at 10:30 A.M., at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City. Friends may call at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Catherine’s Hospice.

Charlotte Theresa Otter

Charlotte Theresa Otter, 81, of McPherson, Kansas passed away at 4:50 p.m., Wednesday, May 29th, 2019 while in the company of family members, at Cedars House.

Charlotte was born in Hays, Kansas on June 16, 1937, a daughter of Felicitas (Dreiling) and Bonaventure A. Kreutzer.

Charlotte attended Yocemento and New Almelo grade school and graduated from Leoville High School, Leoville, Kansas in 1955. She then attended Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas where she received a Bachelor’s Degree and graduated from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas with a Master’s Degree in Special Education.

She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church McPherson.

Through the years Charlotte worked as a Educator in the McPherson USD 418 District, McPherson, Kansas for 26 years.

Charlotte was a member of KPERS and the Retired Teachers Association.

Charlotte enjoyed dancing, antiques, reading, loved going to garage sales, flea markets and auctions. Spending time with her family and her grand kids were very important to her.

Charlotte T. Kreutzer was united in marriage to Conrad A. Otter on June 5, 1957 in New Almelo, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in New Almelo. This union was blessed with the birth of 5 children, Dianne, James, Thomas, Timothy and Kevin.

She is survived by her loving husband Conrad Otter, of McPherson, Kansas; her children, Dianne Wilson and her husband James, of McPherson, Kansas, James Otter and his wife Cindy, of Pittsburg, Kansas; her siblings, Thelma Weiland and her husband Bill, of Colby, Kansas, Mary Brancio, of Denver, Colorado, Betty Neale, of Florida, Janet Harper, of Colby, Kansas, Caroline Hulka, of Florida, Jeannie Stephens, of South Carolina, B.A. Kreutzer, of Florida, Joyce Howery and her husband Jerry, of Wisconsin and Nancy Gibson, of Florida. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sean Wilson(Jennifer), Matthew Wilson, Kimberlie Hoover(Kelly), Amy Barrow(Gregg), Joseph Otter, Jillian Otter and Jacob Otter; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Sophie, Adelyn, Kolson, Kanon, Tayla and Kayler.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Thomas Anthony Otter, Timothy Wayne Otter and Kevin John Otter; her brothers Norman and Joe Kreutzer.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rosary starting at 6:45 p.m..

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 6th, 2019 with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating.

Graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, New Almelo, Kansas.

Robert A. Dague

Robert A. Dague, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on May 4, 1937 in Franklin County, Kansas, the son of John George Jacob and Etta Elizabeth Morgan Dague. A lifetime resident of Scott County & Scott City, Kansas, he was a farmer.

He was a member of the Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas.

On July 19, 1959 he married Joan Carol Vaughn in Garden City, Kansas. She passed away on April 26, 1984 in Garden City, Kansas.

Survivors include his One Daughter – Barbara Jean Dague of Wichita, Kansas, Two Sons – Michael Lee Dague of Scott City, Kansas, John Dale Dague of Scott City, Kansas, One Brother – Roy Dague of Garden City, Kansas, Two Sisters – Dorothy Stiles of Scott County, Kansas, Emma Dague of Garden City, Kansas, One Granddaughter – Joanne VonLintel of Hays, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wife – Joan, One Son – Larry Dague and One Sister – Thelma Lehman.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Prairie View Church of the Brethren in Friend, Kansas with Pastor Jon Tuttle presiding.

Interment will be in the Prairie View Church Cemetery in Friend, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

Betty F. Pettijohn

Longtime Goodland resident Betty F. Pettijohn, 84, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at her home in Goodland.

Betty was born on April 14, 1935 to Andrew J. and Martha (Juhl) Pettijohn, on the family farm north of Kanorado, KS in Kit Carson County, Colorado. She was one of 8 children. Betty attended school in Goodland and graduated from Sherman Community High School in 1953.

Betty was hired by the City of Goodland on June 21, 1956 and retired on January 1, 1996. During her time at the City Office, Betty worked as Customer Service, Billing Clerk, and upon her retirement, she was Deputy City Clerk. In 1961, Betty married E.L. “Buck” Buxton, and after 40 years of marriage, they later divorced.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers Bud and Alvin Pettijohn and two sisters Dorothy Cowan and Joan Sipes.

She is survived by a longtime friend Margaret Russell of Goodland, KS; two brothers Conrad (Carol) Pettijohn of Goodland, KS and Robert (Joy) Pettijohn of Austin, TX, and one sister Grace Simmering of Ness City, KS. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Private burial services were held on Friday, May 31, 2019 at the Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, KS.

Winifred Litton Anderson Rankin

Winifred Litton Anderson Rankin died in Quinter, Kansas May 28, 2019 at age 94. She was born in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado on August 13, 1924 to Hattie Mabel Bretton and B.W. Litton.

Her family moved to Gove, Kansas when she was a young girl. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert “Bob” Monroe Anderson and together they had 5 children. They moved from Gove to Great Bend, Kansas in 1956. Her husband Bob died in an oilfield accident in 1968. She later married Duane Rankin in Wichita, Kansas and they made their home in Great Bend before retiring to Crane, Missouri and Grove, Oklahoma. Duane passed away in 2010. Winifred then moved to Quinter Independent Living Apartments in 2012.

She is survived by 4 children, Robert (Eileen) Anderson, Denver, Colorado, Raymond “Jerry” Anderson, Lincoln, Nebraska, Winnie Anderson Kingsbury, St. Peter, KS, and Randy (Cathy) Anderson, Great Bend, Kansas; daughter-in-law Betty Anderson, Great Bend, KS; and 3 step-sons, Steve Rankin, Wichita, Kansas, Stanley Rankin, Wichita, Kansas, and John Rankin, South Dakota. She loved being surrounded by her 12 grandchildren when they were young. They include, Sheri Elsen, Shele Maher, Amy Schonhoff, Kimi Bowman, Jamie Baldwin, Hunt Kingsbury, Wesley Kingsbury, Carrie Martinez, Amber Anderson, Rollie Anderson, Rob Nichols, Jason Effertz. She was also blessed with many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Rankin, son Ralph “Corky” Anderson, grand-daughter Shele Maher, grand-son Jason Effertz, brother Ralph Litton, sister Leola Litton Horner.

In lieu of a funeral, Winifred requested her children and grandchildren gather and release balloons in her honor. The Great Balloon Release will be 3:00 pm Friday, May 31, Black Angus Best Western Inn, Great Bend, Kansas.
