Samuel J. ‘Sam’ Ward

Samuel J. ”Sam” Ward, age 96, passed away May 11, 2019, at Almost Home, Great Bend. He was born January 4, 1923, at Joplin, Mo., to Grover Cleveland and Martha Jane Ward. Sam married Anneliese Fruehauf July 17, 1949, at Hudson. She survives.

Sam, a resident of Great Bend since 1935 coming from Joplin, Mo., was a lifelong farmer and stockman, belonging to First Christian Church, Great Bend. His passion was farming, but also enjoyed woodworking, carving, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include wife, Anneliese Ward, of the home; one son, Robert Ward of Anthony; two daughters, Mildred Dills and Karen Spears both of Great Bend; three grandchildren Donnie Beeler, Duane Spears and Tracey Spears; and many great grandchildren. Sam was preceded in passing by two brothers, Bob and Grover, Jr.; four sisters, Ellie, Mary, Violet, Jewel; three additional young siblings; and two sons-in-law, Bennie Dills and Al Spears.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at First Christian Church, Great Bend, with Rev. Joshua Leu officiating. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Della Ann Ranker

Della Ann Ranker, age 86, passed away May 11, 2019, at Medical Lodges of Great Bend. She was born Nov. 17, 1932, at Ellsworth, to Otto F. and Anna C. (Kohls) Haase. Della married William Von Ranker Oct. 23, 1951, at Ellsworth. He passed away Feb. 16, 2016.

A 1950 Graduate of Ellsworth High School, Della had been a resident of Great Bend since 1956, coming from McCook, Neb. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she held an active role as a Sunday School teacher, and was employed by Security State Bank for 22 years, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include three sons, David Ranker and wife Ronda of Hays, Steve Ranker of Florissant, Mo., and Philip Ranker and wife Darcee of Solana Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, Matthew Ranker and wife Becca, Amy Brooks and husband Wyatt, Hayley Ranker, and Lynsie Ranker and husband James; five great-grandchildren, Noah, Caleb, Gracie, Hope and Isaac Ranker. She was preceded in passing by her husband Bill; and by one brother Otto Haase, Jr.; and by one sister, Edith Reed.

Services are pending. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lila P. Engelhardt

Almena resident Lila P. Engelhardt passed away May 10 at her home in Almena at the age of 84.  She was born Feb. 9, 1935 in Kanona, KS, the daughter of Franklin & Augusta (Soderlund) Towery.

Survivors include her son Daniel of Norton; her daughter Carlene Schemper of Holdrege, NE; her brother, Francis Towery of FL; her sister, Leola Curtis of Denver, CO; 6 grandchildren & 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed. May 15 at 10:00 a.m. in the Long Island United Methodist Church with Pastor Ted Stapleton officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Almena.

Karen M. (Herrman) Williams

Karen M. (Herrman) Williams, 64, Liebenthal, Kansas, died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Karen was born May 24, 1954, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Elmer F. Herrman, Sr., and Dolores G. (Burgardt) Herrman.  She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  A 1972 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was an assembly line worker at Travenol, Hays, Kansas, for several years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

She married Ray D. Williams, they divorced.

Survivors include:  three brothers, Kenny Herrman (Kathy), Liebenthal, Kansas, Jerry Herrman (Cindy), Liebenthal, Kansas, and Elmer Herrman, Jr. (Sandy), Timken, Kansas; and one sister, Connie Stewart (John), La Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 12, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. 

Church visitation will be Monday, May 13, 2019, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Monday, May 13, 2019, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas, with Father Eric Gyamfi officiating.  Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Liebenthal, Kansas.

Eugene Rohr

Eugene Rohr, age 90, of Munjor, Kansas died Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Via Christi Village Care Center Hays, Kansas. He was born June 9, 1928, at Munjor, Kansas to Matt and Clara (Ruder) Rohr. He married Margie J.(Walker) on September 25, 1954, at Wichita, Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 20, 2017.

He had a home repair business for 30 years and was a farmer. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #11492 both of Munjor, Kansas. He was a veteran of the US Army. Gene enjoyed gardening, pickling black berries, playing pinochle, and always was interested in sports since he was a pitcher for 16 years.

Survivors include one son, Tom Rohr and wife, Therese, Rogers, AR; three daughters, Patricia Rohr, Broomfield, CO; Laura VonLintel and husband, Bill, Hays, KS; Cheryl Bohacek and husband, Matt, Omaha, NE; one brother, Julius Rohr and wife, Mary Jane, Wichita, KS; one sister, Lorene Pfeifer and husband, Dan, St. Louis, MO; one brother-in-law, Jim Burgardt, Denver, Co; seven grandchildren, Katie Griest (Justin), Mary Beth Tritt (Bryce), Annie Rohr, Ben VonLintel, Nick VonLintel, Hannah Bohacek and Cate Bohacek; four great grandchildren, Carter VonLintel, Charlotte Griest, Jack Griest and Benjamin Griest.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Tony, Clarence and Alvin Rohr; two sisters, Irene Legleiter and Mary Ann Burgardt.

Services are 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 13, 2019, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Munjor, Kansas. Burial in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery, Munjor, Kansas with military honors by the Hays V.F.W. Post #9076.

A Knights of Columbus and parish rosary will be at 10.30 A.M. Monday, at the church.

A visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Monday, at the church. The family suggests memorials to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or Hospice of Hays Medical Center.

Ronald L. Brunbridge

Ronald Lester Burbridge, 90 of Russell, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the University of Kansas Health Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

Ronald was born June 1, 1928 in Peru, Nebraska. He was one of six children born to Clifford Clarence and Minnie Alice (Hawkins) Burbridge. He grew up and attended schools in Peru and Bellevue, Nebraska, and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1947.

Ronald served his country in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was a survivor of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. After his tour of duty he returned to the Bellevue area.

Ronald was united in marriage to Dolores Del Read on September 23, 1949 in Bellevue. This union was blessed with two children; Diana and Ronald. They made their home in Bellevue until 1955 when they moved to Omaha, Nebraska. Then in 1963 they moved to Des Moines, Iowa and lived there until moving to Medicine Lodge, Kansas. After Ronald retired they moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1984. Dolores preceded him in death in 1988. Then in 2009, Ronald moved to Russell, Kansas to be closer to his daughter.

Ronald was an owner and operator of the Gilbert Motel in Des Moines, Iowa and owner and operator of the Copa Best Western Motel and the Hereford House restaurant in Medicine Lodge. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Russell. He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 and the Chosin Few of the Marines Corp. He spoke at many schools and group meetings on his experiences with the Marines and the Chosin Reservoir. He was known for his WWII Ford Jeep that he proudly showed in parades. Later in life he learned how to Ski and made tandem bike rides across Kansas and across Iowa with his good friend Laura Johnson. He loved music and traveling, but his great joy came from spending time with his family.

Ronald’s surviving family include his daughter, Diana Morris (Terry) of Russell, Kansas; three grandchildren, Matthew Morris (Kaysie), Mark Morris (Amanda Jo) and Jon Morris (Amanda Lea); and eight great grandchildren, Camden Morris, Chase Morris, Audrie Glaser, Jake Morris, Chailyn Morris, Wyatt Morris, Jack Morris and Maggie Morris. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dolores; son Ronald Lawrence Burbridge; two brothers, Wendell Burbridge and William Burbridge; and three sisters, Eunice Naviaux, Dorothy Phillips and Louise.

Celebration of Ronald’s Life will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Bible Baptist Church. Military Rites will be conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard. Graveside Service will be held at 2:30 PM, Monday at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday, May 12, 2019 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary.

DaLene E. Schuster

Former Phillipsburg resident DaLene E. Schuster passed away May 6, 2019, in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 86.

She was born Jan. 10, 1933, in Lincoln, Neb., the daughter of Fredrick & Tillie (Eikenberg) Otis.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Schuster of Tucson, AZ; 3 sons, Russell of Lincoln, NE, Ronald of Pueblo West, CO & Roger of Lubbock, TX; her sister, Merilyn Wright of Salina; 9 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 13, at 10:00 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Phillipsburg, with Pastors Lee Bennight & Lorna Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Human Society of Hays.

Visitation will be from 12:00 to 9:00 Saturday & Sunday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Esther Schmidt

Esther Schmidt, age 70, of Hays, Kansas passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in Hays. She was born September 10, 1948 in Hays, Kansas to Lester and Esther (Degenhardt) Burgardt. On June 8, 1968 she married Timothy Schmidt at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

Esther was the store manager at Hallmark for several years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and she enjoyed arts and crafts as well as being involved with her grandchildren and all their activities.

She is survived by her husband, Tim of Hays; a son Curtis Schmidt (Amanda) of Hays; a daughter, Leslie Karlin (David) of Hays; two brothers, twin Lester Burgardt (Carol) of WaKeeney, Kansas and Dennis Burgardt (Jan) of Salina, Kansas; two sisters, Linda Schmidt (Kevin) of Bradenton, Florida and Lee Ann Zielinski of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and four grandchildren, Cameron Karlin, Madison Karlin, Avery Schmidt and Jonathan VanCampen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Tammie Schmidt and a brother-in-law, David Zielinski.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, May 13, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Memorial visitation will be Sunday 7 PM – 9 PM with a combined parish vigil and rosary service at 7:30 PM all at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.

Violet Elaine Veatch

Violet Elaine Veatch, 85, of Inman, Kansas (formerly of Hill City, Kansas) passed away peacefully May 4, 2019 at Pleasant View Home. She was born July 24, 1933 to George and Thelma Moore of Morland, Kansas. Elaine grew up on the family farm north of Morland and attended Morland Grade and High Schools.

In 1949 Elaine married Harold Naiman. Two sons were born to this union: Danny Harold and Lane Sheridan. Years later they were divorced. Following the divorce, Elaine went back to school to pursue a nursing degree. She graduated from Dodge City Junior College and then Fort Hays State with a degree in nursing. She was an R.N. in various hospitals until her retirement. Elaine married Gerrell Veatch in 1975. They enjoyed many good years together until Gerrell died in 2001.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her sister Shirley Wilcox; her brother Eldon Moore; and her sons: Lane Naiman and Danny Naiman. Survivors include her guardian Linda Naiman of Hutchinson; grandson Josh and wife Jan Naiman of Hutchinson; great granddaughter Julia Naiman of Hutchinson and niece Kandy and husband Darrell Worcester of Hill City.
