KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Explores New Sounds on “Happy” and “Romantic” Hit, “Sure Be Cool if You Did”

Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Records)Blake Shelton is on track to top the country chart yet again with his laid back new single, “Sure Be Cool if You Did.” The straightforward nature of the lyrics is what made Blake wanted to record the “happy” and “romantic” song in the first place.

He says, “It’s in a bar.  There’s nothing bad.  It’s just a guy picking up a girl, you know.  It’s easy to listen to and not have to think about that hard.”

One thing fans may notice about “Sure Be Cool if You Did” is Blake’s use of a drum loop and finger snaps on the song, and there will be more of those adventurous sounds on Blake’s new album, Based on a True Story…

While Blake knows these new sounds may be unexpected for him, he says, “I hear these records that Luke [Bryan]’s doing and Carrie [Underwood] and Jason [Aldean], and I’m going, ‘Gah, man.  I want in on some of that.’  You know, it just sounds so good. ”

Blake adds, “So, I wanted to incorporate some of the things they’re doing on my record too.”

Based on a True Story… lands in stores March 26.  Blake also appears on the new season of The Voice, premiering Monday, March 25 on NBC.

KHAZ Country Music News: Darius Rucker Feels Right at Home on “True Believers”

khaz darius rucker 20130315Darius Rucker is set to release his third country album, True Believers, on May 21 featuring the hit single, “Wagon Wheel.” Darius, who had a hand in writing 10 of the album’s 12’s tracks, says he hopes fans follow along as he evolves artistically.

“This record, we wanted to sound a little different, but we knew that it was time that the songs were there,” Darius tells ABC News Radio. “Undeniable songs is what we needed. And we worked hard and wrote a bunch of songs again.”

Darius felt more comfortable making True Believers, partly because he recorded a lot of the vocals for the album in his hometown of Charleston, SC. Being a solid member of the country music fold also helped.  Darius says, “This is my third record, and I’m a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and I got my friends. I just felt more comfortable making it.”

Darius enlisted his friends Lady Antebellum to sing backup on “Wagon Wheel.” He’ll kick off his True Believers Tour May 9 in Estero, FL.

Here’s the True Believers track listing:

“True Believers”
“Miss You”
“Wagon Wheel”
“Love Without You”
“Radio”
“Lost in You”
“I Will Love You Still”
“Take Me Home”
“Shine”
“Heartbreak Road”
“Leavin’ the Light On”
“Lie to Me”

KHAZ Country Music News: Country Singer Jack Greene Dies

khaz jack greene 20130315Country singer Jack Greene, who recorded such ’60s favorites as There Goes My Everything and Statue of a Fool and was the Country Music Association’s first male vocalist of the year, died Thursday.

The 83-year-old entertainer, nicknamed the Jolly Green Giant, was born in Maryville, Tenn., near the Smoky Mountains. Greene got his first guitar at age 10 and began playing on a local radio station WGAP-AM as a teen. He soon made his way to Atlanta, singing and playing guitar, string bass or drums in groups called the Cherokee Trio, the Rhythm Ranch Boys and the Peach Tree Cowboys.

In 1962, Greene joined honky-tonk great Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours as a drummer and relief singer. He had an important additional qualification: He’d learned about diesel motors during a two-year Army stint and could repair the band’s tour bus. Tubb liked to introduce Greene as his “big-eared singing drummer,” and one of his recordings singing for the band, The Last Letter, drew so much attention that Decca Records Nashville head Owen Bradley offered Greene a record deal as a solo artist.

Bradley produced records for most of Decca’s country roster at that time, including classic hits for Tubb, Webb Pierce, Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee. He gave Greene the countrypolitan treatment, with gentle honky-tonk and waltz rhythms, sumptuous background choruses and dramatic melodies reminiscent of the pop records Roy Orbison had been making across town for Monument Records.

When Greene’s second charting single, There Goes My Everything, topped the country charts for two months in 1967, the singer left Tubb’s band with the promise that he could always return to his spot behind the drums if things didn’t work out.

He needn’t have worried. He took three trophies at the inaugural CMA Awards in 1967: male vocalist, single and album of the year. He participated in that year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, singing There Goes My Everything on national television. That December, he joined the Grand Ole Opry cast.

Greene scored five No. 1 country hits in just three years. He also recorded a string of duets with fellow Opry member Jeannie Seely, including the 1969 single Wish I Didn’t Have to Miss You, which reached No. 2.

He was a regular Opry presence for more than 40 years before retiring in 2011. When fellow East Tennessee native Kenny Chesney played the radio show for the first time in 1996, Greene accidentally introduced him as “Larry Chesney.” But even as he began suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, he kept his voice, thrilling audiences with the expressive melodies of his two signature hits. He played the Opry for the final time on Dec. 16, 2011, performing There Goes My Everything, the song that had launched his career.

KHAZ Country Music News: Justin Moore Launching First Headlining Tour Thursday Night in Kentucky

khaz justin moore 20130314Justin Moore‘s career is on a roll with his last single, “Til My Last Day,” topping the country chart at the end of last year. Both of his albums, Justin Moore and Outlaws Like Me, have been certified gold, and now he’s launching his first headlining tour Thursday night in Pikeville, KY.

“I’m as excited about the spot we’re in in our career as I’ve ever been,” Justin says.  “It just feels different right now for us, you know.”

Ticket sales are right where Justin and his team expected for his Outlaws Like Me tour, and Justin is excited to go out and “test the waters” as a headliner.  Having the responsibility of his own tour makes Justin a little nervous too.

He says with a sly smile, “If things went wrong before or we didn’t sell any tickets, I’d just blame it on who I was out with. I’m like, ‘Ah, it’s not my tour.”

Justin adds, “In all seriousness, it’s really, really exciting.”

“Cowboys and Angels” singer Dustin Lynch and country newcomer Jon Pardi are in the opening slots on the Outlaws Like Me tour.  Dustin expects to perform most of his self-title debut album for fans in his 40-minute set every night.

He tells ABC News Radio, “It’s fun for the fans that have bought the album, and know all those songs.  They expect us to play all those.”

Dustin considers Justin Moore to be one of the finest vocalists and best entertainers working in country music today.

“It’s amazing to me how he can take a crowd throughout highs and lows throughout the show,” Dustin says of Justin.  “You know, he’s really good at moving a show like that.  I’ve got a lot to learn from that.”

Jon Pardi has just 18-minutes to perform for fans on the Justin Moore tour, but he plans to give it everything he’s got.

“I’m just glad to be a part of it,” Jon says.
