KHAZ Country Music News: Road to Ram Jam Continues as Zac Brown’s Truck Hits Ebay

khaz zac brown 20130305The Road to the Ram Jam all-star country music series continues, with Zac Brown‘s 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn now up for auction.  Zac drove the truck for the past year, and the money raised through its auction at Ebay.com/RoadtoRamJam will benefit his Camp Southern Ground. That facility in Zac’s home state of Georgia will bring together children with diverse abilities and backgrounds, including those with learning disabilities and development disorders, in a state-of-the-art summer camp and research facility.

Zac says, “The proceeds from this truck go to help us make a difference in the lives of many children and their families. Thanks to RAM for all of the charitable donations that they make.”

Zac’s Ram is the third truck to go up for auction as part of the Road to the Ram Jam.  Brantley Gilbert‘s Ram truck was auctioned off recently and raised more than $34,000 for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.  Billy Currington‘s truck raised about the same amount for Team Rubicon, while Kellie Pickler‘s truck brought in more than $36,000 for the USO Warrior and Family Care program in January.  Easton Corbin will offer up his Ram truck for auction soon.

KHAZ Country Music News: Kenny Chesney Performed Surprise Show in Key West Sunday

Kenny Chesney (BNA)Kenny Chesney took the stage at Hogs Breath Saloon in Key West, FL Sunday afternoon to get ready for the launch of his No Shoes Nation tour March 16 in Tampa, FL. During the surprise, three-hour set, Kenny worked his way through his hits like “Summertime” and “You and Tequila,” as well as a few album cuts from his catalog.

Performing surprise shows like this one helps get Kenny primed to entertain stadium crowds. He says, “It’s a low-impact way to ease back into the songs, to find the curve in what we do — and have a whole lotta fun doing it.”

Kenny rounded the set out with covers ranging from George Strait‘s “Ocean Front Property” to the Violent Femmes‘ “Blister in the Sun.” He also performed his latest single, “Pirate Flag,” the lead release from his new album, Life on a Rock, due out April 30.

KHAZ Country Music News: Brad Burns It Up with “REO Paisley-Wagon”

khaz brad paisley 20120719Prankster Brad Paisley couldn’t resist injecting a little cruise-gone-wrong humor into Thursday night’s Sony voyage aboard the General Jackson at Country Radio Seminar.  Brad first came onstage clad in a life jacket, claiming there was a fire on board, but it turns out the real fire was onstage.

After starting with his new single “Beat This Summer,” the members of REO Speedwagon unexpectedly joined Brad onstage, according to Country Aircheck. Kevin Cronin and Dave Amato kicked into “Take It On the Run,” with Sara Evans chiming in on background vocals.

Cronin announced the debut of “REO Paisley-Wagon,” before going on to play classics “Keep on Lovin’ You” and “Time For Me To Fly.” Asserting that all their hits were actually country songs, the Speedwagon front-man led the performers in an all-star singalong of the classic rock hit “Ridin’ the Storm Out.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Little Big Town Says the Real “Tornado” is Backstage

khaz little big town 20130305Little Big Town’s current single, album and tour may all be called Tornado, but the foursome says you haven’t really seen a twister until you witness their kids backstage.

“It’s like a circus, man,” Jimi Westbrook says. “Now you know why we drink,” Karen Fairchild jokes. “No, we love it so much, but it’s insane back there.”

While Jimi suggests the stage may be the only place the collective parents of three get any peace, the band does have a rule: No children in their dressing rooms after supper.

For Karen and Kimberly Schlapman, that means some girl time. “Sometimes we’re in there giggling and sometimes we’re in there about to cry,” Kimberly confesses. “It’s a very special, very intimate time because we are the only ones in our lives who go through what we go through. We have very similar lives, and really we can only identify with each other.”

For the guys, it’s not quite so touchy-feely. “They write songs with dirty lyrics,” Karen accuses. “We write, ridiculous, stupid songs,” Jimi admits.

Monday night is likely to be a kid-free zone, as Little Big Town performs on the Late Show with David Letterman.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Open to Reprising His Role as Reba’s “Malibu Country” Brother

khaz blake shelton 20120329Blake Shelton made a guest appearance as Reba‘s brother on ABC’s Malibu Country Friday night, and he is open to the idea of making that role a recurring one. The only drawback is how much time it takes to film an episode of a sitcom.

“It ties you into L.A. for a week,” Blake says. “You do a read-through on a Friday, and then you rehearse Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and film it Thursday, and you’re right back doing the next show the next day.”

Still, Blake thinks it would be fun to return to the Malibu Country set since he had such a great time filming his first episode.

He says,  “It was amazing to just see that world and see how they work. It’s a lot of just goofing off, but you’ve got to be a good goofer to do it right, and they’ve got the right ones.”

As for the possibility of getting his own sitcom someday, Blake can’t really see that happening at this point. That’s especially true his role as a coach on The Voice already takes up so much time.

“As soon as the leash gives me a little slack from The Voice, I’m going straight back into touring,” Blake says. “I can’t see myself going from The Voice into more television. I think there will at least be a break there.”

On the music front, Blake’s new single, “Sure Be Cool if You Did,” will be featured on Blake’s upcoming album, Based on a True Story…, due out March 26.

KHAZ Country Music News: Trace Adkins Ready to Rumble on All-Star Celebrity Apprentice

khaz trace adkins 20130228Trace Adkins promises All-Star Celebrity Apprentice is going to be a “party every day,” and judging from the trailer featuring the male contestants, it lives up to his word.

The clip not only features Trace wearing an apron and an Italian chef’s hat, but hamming it up in a leopard print caveman dress with a banana leaf on his head.

And as you might expect, things get confrontational for the season 7 runner-up very quickly.  “You’re not going to be able to hold back,” he teases. “You’re gonna have to come guns up right out of the chute.”

For Trace, that includes telling Stephen Baldwin, “You be nice to Marilu (Henner) or I’m gonna kill you.” He also threatens to fit Gary Busey with a shock collar, and to “slap the [bleep]” out of another contestant.

He wryly offers, “They called me and said ‘We need you for your energy and enthusiasm.’”

You can check out Trace’s antics for yourself when All-Star Celebrity Apprentice premieres March 3 on NBC.

Winners: Chris Young Tickets with 99 KZ Country

khaz chris young 20120424

Chris Young concert at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 8pm

Congratulations to Karen Howland and Brenda Dechant!

When an artist looks back on his or her own career, there are always moments he or she can point to where there was a shift to another level. Those defining moments tend to be easy to spot with the benefit of hindsight but more difficult to see without the passage of time. Yet Chris Young has a sense that something is happening. “I really do believe in timing,” says Young. “Everybody has a different point in their career when things start to come together and click, when it’s your time.” And as far as timing – Young’s career is ticking like a Swiss watch. The last three singles Chris Young has released have all hit #1 on the charts, including the smash hit “Gettin’ You Home,” a song that earned him his first ever Grammy nomination. “Music is why I’m here and it’s something I can’t live without,” says Young. “It’s what I’m built to do.” His self titled first album would go on to earn Young the title of best selling new male artist for 2006 and a nod for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Male Vocalist award. Young doubled down on the success of his first record with the release of his second CD, The Man I Want To Be. Any concern over maintaining momentum vanished when the album powered right through the dreaded sophomore slump with three back-to-back #1 singles. The impressive streak started with the title track, picked up steam with “Gettin’ You Home,” and was then followed by a song that would earn Chris Young a place into the history books. “Voices” was originally the first single released from Man. It made its initial run up the chart in late 2008 but stalled just inside the Top 40. When the label made the decision to give it a second go two years later, it soared all the way to #1. “The last time (that) happened was 25 years ago with ‘On The Other Hand’ for Randy Travis,” beams Young, thrilled to have that connection with one his musical heroes.
Young’s all around accomplishments as an entertainer also earned him one the industry’s highest honors: his first ever Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for “Gettin’ You Home.”

Tickets:  $46, $37

KHAZ Country Music News: The Band Perry Reveals the Moment They Knew “Better Dig Two” Was a Big Hit

khaz band perry 20120724After The Band Perry took the music world by storm with their breakthrough hit, “If I Die Young,” the sibling trio knew they had to launch their sophomore album with a really big single.  They’re latest #1 hit “Better Dig Two” definitely fits that bill.  The Band Perry debuted the song on last November’s CMA Awards and immediately after the performance their fans started downloading the song in droves.

The group hit a few CMA after-parties following the show, and lead singer Kimberly Perry says, “We were watching the charts and you could just see ‘Better Dig Two’ climbing, climbing, climbing, and then finally hit Number One on iTunes before we went to bed.”

Kimberly’s brother and band mate Neil Perry kept track of “Better Dig Two” trending on Twitter that same night.  He says, “That was pretty cool seeing how people were taking the song instantly and really relating to it.”

Now that “Better Dig Two” has hit #1 at country radio, Kimberly, Neil and their brother Reid Perry are excited to launch the full-length sophomore album, Pioneer, on April 2.

“It was absolutely kind of a validating thing to say ‘Alright here we go, this is off and running,'” Kimberly says of their latest success, “and we can’t just wait for you guys to hear the rest of the record.”

The second single from, Pioneer, is called “DONE.,” and it hit the airwaves Monday.
