KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Honoring Bruce Springsteen at MusiCares Gala Tonight

khaz faith hill tim mcgraw 20130208Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are teaming up to help salute Bruce Springsteen as the Recording Academy’s MusiCares Person of the Year at a star-studded gala tonight in Los Angeles. The couple, who will duet on Bruce’s song “Tougher than the Rest,” has gotten to know The Boss personally in the past few years, and they still look up to him as a true music icon.

“He’s one of those guys that there’s only been a handful of throughout the history of music,” Tim tells ABC News Radio, adding, “The great thing about music and what Bruce is able to do is it describes situations and describes feelings and emotions that you didn’t realize that you had or you didn’t know how to voice those opinions or voice those emotions.”

Tim goes on to describe Bruce as a “great,” “solid” guy saying, “His image is one of those of a guy who just sort of knows how to walk the road with everybody, and he really is that kind of guy.”

In addition to Tim and Faith, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown and Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks are also paying tribute to Bruce at tonight’s event.  The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart, a huge fan of The Boss, will host the event, which takes place two days before the 55th Grammy Awards ceremony.

Proceeds from the MusiCares gala, which celebrates not only Springsteen’s artistic achievements but also his charity work, will go to help musicians and those in the music industry who need financial, medical or personal help.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw: Still Sober and Proud of It

khaz tim mcgraw 20120328Tim McGraw discussed his decision to quit drinking during an appearance Wednesday on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that also included a performance of “One of Those Nights” from his new album Two Lanes of Freedom.

Tim said this May will mark his fifth anniversary of being sober.

He told Jay he decided to quit drinking because it got to a point where he thought “it was disruptive” to his life.

Tim admitted that he still feels like he misses the drinking sometimes, but he believes he’s much better now without it.

As for how he manages to stay on the wagon, Tim told Jay, “You just have to stay focused and routines are good for me. I like routines, but I think ultimately, you have to make the decision that you want to get more out of life.”

Tim says there wasn’t one incident in particular that made him stop, “there was probably twenty-something years of incidents” and he finally got to the breaking point.

Tim told Jay he decided to learn how to text because his wife, Faith Hill, could tell when he was drinking when he called her on the phone.  Tim joked that when he “started slurring my text it was time to quit drinking.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Auctioning Off Ram Truck to Benefit Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans

khaz brantley gilbert 20130206You may never be able to chill out with Brantley Gilbert cruising down the road in his truck, but now you can at least own Brantley’s truck.  He’s been driving a 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn for the past year, and that truck is now up for bid at Ebay.com/RoadtoRamJam as part of the Road to the Ram Jam All-Star Country Music Series.

Brantley made sure to take good care of the truck, though he tells ABC News Radio, “We’ve had it in a mud hole or two, and it’s done some donuts.  But it’s still in perfect condition.”

In order to keep the truck in great shape, Brantley wouldn’t allow smoking or dogs in the vehicle.

He says, “You know, I’ve got a pitbull.  I may or may not have kept that rule, but I hope I broke it in well for ’em.”

Proceeds from the sale of Brantley’s truck will go to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, or IAVA.  That organization helps soldiers find work and education when they get out of the service, and Brantley supports military-related causes like this because of his cousin, who is currently serving as a Marine.

“I definitely, definitely support ’em,” Brantley says.  “I miss my boy too.  I’m ready for him to come home, so this is my way of kind of keeping in contact.”

Brantley is one of five country stars auctioning off their Ram trucks for a good cause.  Kellie Pickler raised more than $36,000 last week for the USO Warrior and Family Care program.  Billy Currington, Easton Corbin and Zac Brown Band are also taking part in the Road to the Ram Jam campaign.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw Looking Forward to Long Road Ahead with “Two Lanes of Freedom,” Now in Stores

khaz tim mcgraw 20130205Tim McGraw‘s new album, Two Lanes of Freedom, is now in stores, and he hasn’t been this excited about releasing new music in a very long time.  For his past few albums, Tim has had to wait up to two years from the time he recorded his new music to the time it was released due to a legal battle with his former label, Curb Records.  Tim is now signed to Big Machine Records, and knowing his music would be released just months after he recorded it gave him a very positive outlook in the studio.

“I think the thing that we felt, and I felt more than anything, was knowing what was gonna happen afterwards  — that we had a plan,” Tim tells ABC News Radio.  “We didn’t have to sit on this music and not have to sit and worry about how it was all going to work.  So, there was a sense of optimism going in.”

That sense of optimism came into focus on the title track, “Two Lanes of Freedom,” which Tim recorded very early in the record-making process.

He says, “When we recorded that song, it sort of raised its hand and said, ‘This is what the record is going to revolve around.'”  Tim adds, “Every other song sort of just fed off of that song.”

In addition to the title cut and the current hit, “One of Those Nights,” Two Lanes of Freedom also features guest appearances from Taylor Swift and Keith Urban on the track “Highway Don’t Care.”  Getting Taylor, Keith and Tim in the same room at the same time proved to be impossible due to their crazy schedules, but modern technology allowed them to contribute their parts from three different studios at three different times.

“The modern ways of recording are so much better, so it’s so much easier.  So you just shoot a track over to somebody,” Tim explains.  “So, I shot it over to Taylor, and she went in the studio when she was working and laid her vocal down, and Keith did the same.  He was working and went in and laid his guitar track down.”

Though they weren’t all in the same room for the recording session, Tim says, “It couldn’t have turned out any better.”

Tim McGraw is making multiple TV appearances this week to promote Two Lanes of Freedom including a performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday.  He stops by NBC’s Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday.

KHAZ Country Music News: Reba Plays a Version of Herself in “Malibu Country”

khaz reba mcentire 20121203Reba has been an open book with her fans for decades now, so it’s no wonder she’s comfortable playing what is pretty much a version of herself on her new show Malibu Country.  Reba stopped by Good Morning America Monday to chat about her role as single mom Reba Mackenzie saying, “What you see is what you get.  I am pretty much that character.  I try to raise my kids right.  I try to discipline ’em, just like in real life.”

Reba’s on-screen relationship with Lily Tomlin, who plays her character’s mother Lillie Mae, also mirrors Reba’s relationship with her real-life mom Jackie.

“We were buddies, best friends, and that’s the way we are on the TV show,” Reba says of that mother-daughter dynamic. As for working with Lily, Reba says, “She’s wonderful to work with.  To hang out with.  I just love it.”

Malibu Country airs Friday nights at 8:30 Eastern time on ABC.
