KHAZ Country Music News: Randy Travis Expected to Plead Guilty to Drunk Driving This Week

khaz randy travis 20120925Randy Travis is expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving charges later this week in Sherman, TX.  That’s according to Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown, who tells ABC News Radio the plea is expected to happen during Travis’s court appearance Thursday.  The charge is punishable by one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

This particular case stems from Travis’s August 7 arrest after he veered off the road in his Pontiac Grand Am and was discovered in the road naked, according to authorities. He was reportedly combative at the scene and had a blood-alcohol level of .15. The legal limit for driving is .08.

Travis’s lawyer, Larry Freeman, tells ABC News Radio that Travis will plead no contest to the charges against him. Speaking of the August incident, Freeman says, “It was an unfortunate event, but the reality is it occurred and what we’ve worked out with the DA is a way to put it behind Randy so he can put it behind him so he can go on and take advantage of the opportunities before him in 2013.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Brantley Gilbert Will Feel Like a Winner at the ACM Awards No Matter the Outcome

khaz brantley gilbert 20121203ACM New Male Vocalist nominee Brantley Gilbert really is just happy to be nominated for the fan-voted trophy. He’s up against Lee Brice and Hunter Hayes for the honor, but Brantley doesn’t need to actually win a trophy to have a great time at the ACM Awards this April.

He tells TheBoot.com, “I’m looking forward to going to the show. And having the prettiest date is never a bad thing!”  Of course, Brantley is referring to his fiancé, ACM New Female Artist nominee Jana Kramer.

While Brantley knows his fans have his back, he doesn’t think a fan-voted award gives an accurate reading of which artist has the best group of followers.

“I think all of us in this business have different kinds of fans,” Brantley explains. “Some may not have a computer or go to that many shows. Other people have folks that may be too busy to get on their computer, so we’ll see how it goes. I know I have the best fans around.”

Voting in for the New Artist categories is now open at ACMVote.com through February 4. The 48th Annual ACM Awards will be handed out Sunday, April 7 on CBS.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw Recalls a “One of Those Nights” Moment from 8th Grade

khaz tim mcgraw 20121031Tim McGraw‘s latest hit, “One of Those Nights,” is all about making the memories that last a lifetime. The funny thing is, most of the time you don’t realize you’re making those memories until a few years have passed.

Tim tells ABC News Radio, “You look back at your life and the moments that you remember are usually smaller moments. Like, moments in time that you don’t think about at all.”

While Tim remembers the details about big moments like winning Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards or scoring his first #1 hit, he still vividly recalls a small exchange with his high school basketball coach that affects him to this day.

Tim was only an 8th grader when he tried out for the varsity basketball team, which he admits was “sort of ambitious.” Before the results were posted, the team’s Coach Butler took Tim aside at recess and told him he hadn’t made the team.

Tim explains, “He said, ‘There were a couple of older kids that this was their last shot at playing.’ He said, “You would’ve made the team, and I want you to know that you’re the kind of guy that every coach would love to have on their team, but you’re gonna be on there. Don’t worry about it.'”

That vote of confidence from the coach had a big impact on Tim as he went on to play on the varsity team.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal then ’cause I didn’t halfway expect it,” Tim explains, “but he just sort of gave me a confidence in telling me that, don’t worry, I’d be on the team from here on out, and that instantly made me a better ball player.”

“One of Those Nights” is the lead single from Tim’s new album, Two Lanes of Freedom, hitting stores Tuesday, February 5. Look for Tim to kick off his media blitz in support of the album Friday live from the Super Bowl in New Orleans on ABC’s Good Morning America. He follows that up with appearances on PBS’ Austin City Limits and CBS Sunday Morning over the weekend.

Tim is also set to perform on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on February 5 with performances on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on February 6 and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! February 7. He’ll wrap up the TV appearances with a stop by Chelsea Lately on E! coming up February 11.

KHAZ Country Music News: Tim McGraw Puts His Musical Blinders on While in the Studio

khaz tim mcgraw 20120807Tim McGraw has made a career out of calling the shots on what songs he records, and it’s turned out very well for him. Tim is one of the top selling artists in any genre in the past 20 years with more than 40 million albums sold, and he continues to follow his own path on the new project Two Lanes of Freedom, due out February 5. He says the key to keeping on that course is shutting out the opinions of the people at country radio, music critics or even his fans about what kind of music he should record.

“When I go into the studio, for as much as I possibly can, it’s about putting blinders on and going in and making music that makes me feel something, and stuff that I want to do at the time,” Tim tells The Tennessean. “All that other stuff, I’m not really an artist anymore if I start taking too much of that in.”

Two Lanes of Freedom features Tim’s most recent singles “One of Those Nights” and “Truck Yeah.”

KZ Country Cheesy Joke of the Day 1/29/13

khaz cheesy joke logo 20110802Chicken Little

Mrs. Fleshman goes to the butcher shop to buy a chicken for the Sunday meal. The butcher has only one scrawny chicken left. He puts it on the scale.

      “Three pounds,” he says.

“That’s too scrawny; don’t you have something bigger?” Mrs. Fleshman asks.

He pretends to rummage around, and then puts the same chicken back on the scale, while pressing with his thumb.

“Three and a half pounds,” he says.

“That looks better,” says Mrs. Fleshman. “I’ll take them both.”

KHAZ Country Music News: Gary Allan’s “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” Inspired by His Co-Writer’s Landscaping Mishap

khaz gary allan 20130116The message of hope found in Gary Allan‘s hit “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” has brought inspiration to millions of people as it’s climbed the country charts. Though you might assume the song was inspired by a big event in one of the writers’ lives, Gary’s co-writer Matt Warren actually came up with the title after a run-in with a weed eater.

Gary tells ABC News Radio, “He was doing landscaping and he hit something with the weed eater and it banked off the wall and hit him in the face.”

The phrase “Every storm runs out of rain,” popped in Matt’s head as he was cleaning up the wound from the gardening incident. He brought it over to Gary and their co-writer Hillary Lindsey and the result is Gary’s latest hit song.

It’s the lead single from Gary’s brand-new album, Set You Free, now in stores.

KHAZ Country Music News: Blake Shelton Clarifies Statement that Offended Country Music Hall of Famer Ray Price

Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Records)Blake Shelton took to Twitter Thursday to clear the air about some a statement he made that offended Country Music Hall of Fame member Ray Price.

It all started when Ray posted a Facebook link to a story at SavingCountryMusic.com pulling quotes from Blake’s GAC Backstory special on the evolution of country music.  Blake apparently said, “Nobody wants to listen to your grandpa’s music. And I don’t care how many of these old farts around Nashville going, ‘My God, that ain’t country!’  Well that’s because you don’t buy records anymore, jackass.  The kids do, and they don’t want to buy the music you were buying.”

Ray didn’t take kindly to that statement saying, “This guy sounds like in his own mind that his head is so large no hat ever made will fit him.  Stupidity Reigns Supreme!!!!”  Ray adds that Blake should be so lucky as to enjoy a career like his that spans 63 years.

Blake responded on Twitter saying Ray Price is one of his all time favorite artists.  Blake says, “I hate that I upset him…The truth is my statement was and STILL is about how we as the new generation of country artists have to keep re-inventing country music to keep it popular.”

Blake points out that Ray Price himself pushed the boundaries of country music in the ’60s adding lush strings to his hits such as “For the Good Times.”

Blake adds, “Perfect example with the introduction of a bigger orchestrated sound in country music.  It was new and awesome!!!”

Blake admits he isn’t the most tactful guy in country music saying, “I absolutely have no doubt I could have worded it better (as always ha!) and I apologize to Mr. Price and any other heroes of mine that it may offended.”
